View Full Version : Qnap TS-201 and NFS support
I have read and understood that the Qnap TS-201 which I currently use does not have NFS support. Supposedly, NFS is a rather sought after protocol to use for streaming HD video to network media players like the Dvico Tvix. This is exactly what I am after, since HTTP isn't' as powerful (?).
So, I'm wondering if anyone has gotten NFS to work on their TS-201 either by firmware updates or community hacks? I read somewhere about a difficult linux hack that could be made to get NFS and secure NFS (over SSL). I have yet to see anyone pull that feat on the TS-201, though supposedly it worked for folks with the TS-101!

I came across a thread earlier today that shows the basics of hacking into the Qnap system and add components. surely NFS component is available as well but often these are tailored to certain models (due to different processors used).
By the way, it's not HTTP, but "SMB" which is the windows version of NFS for Linux.
I also believe the Pro versions are the ones including NFS...?
Must check... but I do thing so if my brain is still working fine :-)
Right. Well I absolutely do require more bandwidth than the specified 25 mbit/s (NMT:s SMB) for hddvd and bluray rips, so I reckon i need either FTP(?) or NFS or HTTP, if the tvix/qnap works with HTTP like the popcornhour seems to!
So what are my options, seeingas I need 30 or so mbit?
What is the problem.
Is it copying fiiles to the PCH unit or playing them from network? In that case, FTP is only to copy files and not stream ... confusing
Either get a server that supports NFS (or wait until the Snap might do so).
We will discuss with Qnap about ability to ad NFS early next week.
Enjoy
hi,
not yet tried, but the feed in ipkg contains the package,
then follow the installation of ipkg and run ipkg install unfs3
(a little bit linux command line would surely be needed)
http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/Open_Turbostation
http://ipkg.nslu2-linux.org/feeds/optware/ts101/cross/unstable/
i had done some test (not enough) that clearly separate the fact of using qnap to create a package (a full compile environment) and the case of simple user that use ipkg to copy the binary provided by ipkg to /opt/local/
i have a qnap and will try also, (but not at the moment) i'm focusing my poor free time on kissdx to close the beta2
let's keep in contact....
kissdx should also run on QNAP to publish multimedia to player
as we have a package
see you

Streaming HD movies from the Qnap TS-201 to the Tvix 6500 is what I'm after. It's great to hear you'll be in contact with Qnap regarding NFS support on the 201. I recently bought it for the purpose of streaming HD content but did not know about the NFS limitations then! I haven't got a media player yet, I am waiting for the Tvix 6500. Can the Tvix 6500 carry more bandwidth through SMB than the popcorn hour perhaps? (30+ mbit/s? ) In that case, I guess NFS wouldn't be neccessary.
I'll definitely keep watch of this matter!

hi,
i saw that link this morning..... maybe you could try ?

This is very interesting! I'll try it when I get my Tvix from the pre-order. I'm confused about wether optware overwrites the original firmware though, with the bittorrent client, user interface and all? I obviously want to keep those intact! =)
Good find.

hi,
here is the result of my yesterday test of NFS on QNAP
i had follow the guide refer before but some modifications were needed to make it run with my macosx access to this nfs
- the /dev/mtdblock4 is a great solution working well: just do not forget to umount it to save the file.... (mtdblock stand for Memory Technology Device (read the ROM!) http://www.linux-mtd.infradead.org/)
- the launching command :
first i run it with debug option to see any failure from the command line and Ctrl C to stop it
/opt/sbin/unfsd -e /opt/etc/exports -d
then automaticaly from autorun.sh (i remove the limitation of tcp)
/opt/sbin/unfsd -e /opt/etc/exports
This allow a successfull connection from macosx without having to precise the TCP port...
i have followed the same rule that a browser use to access http: it's tcp 80 by default.
- user and grouid is a bit tricky to enable access in write from macosx/linux....
i mean that a new file should be created with one of the local user of QNAP
then i specify it: (the write request anonymous is translated in user 500, group 500 (the first user, pass of yor QNAP.. see cat /etc/passwd and cat /etc/group
then my exports file in /opt/etc is:
/share/Public (rw,all_squash,anonuid=500,anongid=100)
/share/Qweb/media (ro)
/nfs/MacosxTimeMachine (ro) 10.39.10.16(rw,all_squash,anonuid=500,anongid=100)
and for infor my autorun.sh
echo "Starting autorun script:"
rmdir /opt
echo "export PATH=/opt/bin:/opt/sbin:$PATH" >> /etc/profile
echo /opt/lib >> /etc/ld.so.conf
ln -sf /mnt/HDA_ROOT/opt /opt
mkdir /nfs
ln -sf /share/MD0_DATA/alias/MacosxBackup /nfs/MacosxTimeMachine
#NFS support
portmap
/opt/sbin/unfsd -e /opt/etc/exports
. /opt/etc/init.d/S83kissdx
My only problem is time machine (the backup utilities of macosx support of nfs)
hope it will help you

The SMB performance on the TViX is much higher than on previous players so
even for HD movies it seems to go well most of the time... It all needs to be
"mass tested" in several environments...
So, what bitrate movies have you found SMB works for? I have, for example, Transformers @ 23.4 mbit (HD-DVD source) and Casino Royale @ 31.8 mbit (Blu-ray source), in TS H264. Do you reckon they would work over SMB, with The TS-201 and the Tvix 6500?
/Johan
You know I can't answer that as a lot will depend on your local network. By the
way, I further tested the TViX M-6500a mainly using the Infrant which was fine
with Transformers (I have it too)... over SMB and NFS...
Results vary based on other hardware you might use... You only know after
you tried. I also am using the TS-409 which is not n accurate reference for the
TS-201... so... can't answer that question for you...
I see. Well, using my wired 100mbit LAN, I can read or write with the TS-201 from my windows computer at about 80 mbit/s.
That's far higher than the media players can perform so theoretically it should
be sufficient if it would depend on your PC, but it's not. The SMB client on media
players is different...
Get one already :-)
We'll make it work one way or the other if not by default.
I see. Well, using my wired 100mbit LAN, I can read or write with the TS-201 from my windows computer at about 80 mbit/s.
If the traffic is one way on SMB you should be getting higher. That is around 4.8Gb/min. I sustain 4.4Gb/min, with large files, on a TS209-PC-TS201 copy via Windows Explorer with PC NIC utilisation of around 80% on a 100mbit/s network. The restriction at that write rate for my tests (44hours to copy 700Gb as I rebuilt one machine gave a consistent 4.375Gb/min) is either the Network or your PC processing. In loop read write I was not able to get my PC to operate above 80% network utilisation and the read write rate dropped with any other load on the PC.
Check SmallNetBuilder for performance charts. They do not have the TS-201 but check the TS-209. My experience is that the TS-201 is about 5-15% slower than the TS-209 (which is about the same as my Thecus 5200Pro) in write performance depending on the file size.
I've just completed the "install UNFSD on your TS201" guide and I experience that the performance of the NFS is much worse then the SMB on my Tvix 5100 to my TS201 when watching movies over the same wired LAN connection..
isn't the NFS supposed to be faster? Anybody else experience the same?
I have my TS201 sharing the same folder via builtin SMB and addon NFS, I configure my Tvix 5100 with 2 shares, one slow(SMB) to the SMB share and one fast(NFS) to the NFS export directory and when I watch the same x264 HD clip I experience much more stutter, block noise and so on on the NFS side.. really strange since I was hoping to gain performance in adding nfs on the TS201.
I am using tvix 4100 and qnap 209 pro. Also I have router DIR-655 from dlink.
If I connected qnap --> tvix via nfs, all is work if no dir655 router via that devices. Dir655 looks like not pass nfs normally, I already posted about it at dlink beta forums - but for 2 monthes still no responces from dev. team.
but if connect qnap --> tvix directly or via other router (like belkin n1) - nfs is work fine.
bummer, I have a TS-201 and a Dlink DIR-655 router =/...
BTW. From my PC i measured 45 mbit with iperf to the Tvix 6500 over SMB. Not quite enough for full quality HD!
