USB expansion on 209/209pro

Can anyone with a 209 let me know how the USB connections work?

Is it just for copying stuff from the USB device to the internal disks or can you leave a usb disk connected on usb and access it via network?
If so, does it mount in the existing tree or is it a new share point?
