View Full Version : Dune region free Patch (081226_1216)

Hi-Jack
31-12-08, 06:09
In the spirit of honesty where we believe as long as we can purchase foreign
DVD's and Blu-ray and import these, we should be allowed to play them on our
players as well and not be locked by decision of other companies who decided
to region lock your devices...

In such spirit, we release publicly a pacth that will allow your player to become
DVD Region Free and on top offers a region selection fro Blu-Ray... Here's
what you do with this patch (easy):

- This patch is only for firmware version "081226_1216". (current version)
- Copy the file to USB stick or external HDD.
- Connect your USB or HDD to the player
- Select the file from the browser and press "Enter" button.
- Eventually, "Success" should be shown on the screen.
- After that, it becomes possible to switch regions: on
the main screen: press "Mute" button 4 times and then
1 or 2 or 3 for Blu-ray region selection.
-You can use the current patch to select DVD region as well... Press mute 3X and enter the 01 / 02 / 03 etc... depending on the region you want. Initially this patch does not change region for DVD, only offers selection of it...

As always, use at your own risk.

We will issue updates whenever updates apply to new firmware versions
undoing this patch however know this is not a standard service and should
be considered as extra option from the community.

Thanks Hi-Jack

Nice to get this sorted before my player even arrives.

Does this also take care of the bd-rom drive ?

Hi-Jack
31-12-08, 06:41
Read the message again... :-)
DVD is region free auto and BD Region can be selected by pressing 4 X MUTE
and selecting 1 - 2 - 3 (for A B C Blu-ray region). Downside is, this will not be a
permanent fix as every update will undo this considering it is a path on top of
the FW... but we will provide such patch again every time it is necessary...

Like i said: in the spirit of honesty...

:-)

Does the region change on BD "stick" ? In other words, if i set it to region A and switch off the player, am I still in region A when turning it back on or back to the player's default region ?

Hi-Jack
31-12-08, 08:01
yes, the region set is sqved on reboot. Wouldnt be much of a patch without :-)

Where can you see if the DVD / BDMV is what region?

Hi-Jack
31-12-08, 10:20
You can't see it anywhere... You can change it by pressing MUTE 4 X followed by 1 - 2 - 3 (A - B - C)

Maradona10
31-12-08, 10:27
So for DVD and BD backups you have to guess which region they are?

Hi-Jack
31-12-08, 10:30
What are you talking about?
DVD is standard region free after using this patch so there is no region set.
For Blu-ray you set the player to whatever region you need at the time of playing the disk (A - B or C). Default, your region is whatever applies to your country...

Not a lot of guessing to there...

With most downloaded rips the region code is removed.
For the rest put it on A. If it doesn't play put it on B etc...
And remember it the next time you want to play the file

Well after updating to the RIGHT 12/26/08 firmware for this release [and I got the Web Browser icon as well!] I applied this patch...

Still cannot play Region 1 DVD's in NTSC mode over svideo/composite (red/white audio)--tried setting to Region 1 [mute 4x, then Mode A come sup and I choose ok] but still cannot play Region 1 DVD's in USA...

So I'm now officially out of options for Region 1 DVD NTSC play options..

ideas? -jonny123

!!! Happy New Year !!!

@jonny123 did you have any luck playing original other region disks?

Hi-Jack
01-01-09, 09:48
Jonny, some disks require a region to be set and will not work on region "0". Notice that the setting A-B-C is only for Blu-ray and not for DVD... We will
check if we can have some sort of selection or release a seperate region code
patch somehow...

Dev E Loper (anonymous name) is already working on it... We expect this to be finished before the end of Jan...

01-01-09, 10:04
Hi-Jack That's what I thought... There are a LOT of discs doing this region check... so I hope they fix this soon...

Hi-Jack
01-01-09, 10:23
The community will provide as usual... Just needs work to analyze this code and see how it can be patched without breaking things... Just a matter of time... With these holidays and all we expect a reasonable time is mid January for enabling this selection.

Just a matter of time... (days / weeks, not months)

And I suggest that HDI add this to normal firmware not as patch, otherwise they might have problems with their licence - "leaked" codes is one thing but company released "patch" and speciffic for firmware version is another - they walking very fine line here ...

undoing this patch however know this is not a standard service and should

it's really amazing how fast the hackers are! we released this mechanism of service updates (.dsf files) only a few weeks ago and now somebody already used it to provide this crack the regional coding in this form! I really wander where it's coming from... I always had impression that Sigma Designs doesn't control distributing their SDK that well as they always declared. It seems it's already available to hackers for quite some time...

From our (HDI) side I really must warn everybody: we can't control what kind of stuff you install into the players you bought. This is your property and you can do with it whatever you want. But of course, for any such hacking it's your own responsibility and risk, and of course, we will never support any such kind of "external work" done by hackers...
It's also up to our distributors to decide what to do if on any of the warranty devices they find such kind of "patches"...

Well this region free patch coming from a 3rd party might boost sales for HDI.

I assume that offcially you only sell region locked devices you cannot be blaimed for anything in the rights department.

jonny123

Now this is odd....

I loaded the new FW and then the patch, and still I could not play my region 1 DVD's. Same deal after forcing to region 1. Now here's the wierd part...

I reloaded the patch a second time--now I can play all but one DVD I have, and that's one of my daughter's movies "Blonde Ambition" with Jessica Simpson so no big loss there...

So now all's working well for me on svideo and NTSC and with BOTH the Thecus N4100+ (SMB) and the readynas NV+ (using NFS)

GREAT DEVICE! just a little too LAGGY to start playback (SMB and NFS both) with ISO files and the initial load time for files, but otherwise, GREAT!

The patch and firmware update are great...Nice Google browser via the "search button" after choosing "Web Browser"--and my USB keyboard+mouse combo work great, too, for the browser!

Trying USB disks next... one 256mb memory key did not register, incidentally.

-jonny123

Hi-Jack
02-01-09, 13:57
Jonnny, you cannot set the player to Region 1 on this patch. The "a" you set is only for Blu-ray. We will issue an update sooner or later that allows selecting DVD Region manually.

Likely your DVD title is protected to ONLY play on region 1 so also region free does not work for some titles... Matter of time before we can release such updated patch on which you can test...

Since BD regions are A,B,C,D it would be nice to use this (colored) buttons to select BD region and use numbers (1,2,3,4,5,0) for DVD region.

it seems that loading of this code breaks the upgrade procedure...

I had it after the serial fix from demo issue.

I had the stop firmware upgrade/downgrade issue before loading this patch.
I had it after the serial fix from demo issue.

I must be more clear:
my BD Prime was shipped to me with the 081218 firmware on-board.
I tested it and it worked fine (no demo logo).
Then I upgraded the firmware to the 081226 and testing it I noted demo-logo issue with informations showing demo license.
I then try to downgrade the firmware to the previous 081218 but I was not able to load anymore firmware.
I tried to load the patch and I was able to do it.
Then DKV send me the license patch and the demo logo disappeared but I still cannot perform any upgrade/downgrade.

Be careful. The release is intended only to work with fw 081226. But because it is just a patch (changing some bits and bytes) it might work with the beta. But in my opinion it's way too risky to try it (until confirmed by the creators)...

Hmm..this does not really work for me...

pressing mute 3 times and 01 02 03 doesnīt do anything for me (latest non beta firmware...)

instead pressing 3 times mute and then 1 2 or 3 sometimes changes the region code for the BLURAY from A to B.

What am I missing?

From memory you only enter 1, 2, 3 with no zeros.

You may find it only works sometimes due to the timing of the keys being pressed.

And even when I am trying to play that DVD my BD Prime break down. Just writing "play" and my TV screen is black. And then I should shut down the player with button on it

Yes.

1) according to HiJack: DVD is region free auto and BD Region can be selected by pressing 4 X MUTE and selecting 1 - 2 - 3 (for A B C Blu-ray region).

2) it works like this on my player

marked bold by me. And thats btw the way it works. If I not mistaken initial Hi-Jack's post was reffering for demo unit he had with BD drive other than Sony.

Nitey

Maybe there's some confusion, or we're talking about different things. The patch does indeed not, as stated in your quote, make the player change the/its region according to the region of the dvd played. The player is 'tricked' into believing the dvd is region free (like Anydvd does). However, you can choose to set the region of the player by using the mute sequence, although that shouldn't be necessary for dvd playback.

Is this also how you see it?

I can't seem to get the region fix to work. I installed it, pressed 4 times on mute and then 1,2 or 3, but no effect. The br title still reports incorrect region. Am I supposed to get a visual confirmation the region has changed ?

I'm using the latest beta fw.

mmmm
The HDI players come region free from factory for DVD as far as know (unless changed) but can be set to a specific region since some DVD's are protected to only play if the region is correct (new screwup system from the movie industry).

You are both correct you can set Region DVD and Blu-Ray seperately with this patch... however DVD is default region free. At least has been on all unit's i've seen...

I noted this region free patch seems to work also, mostly--not for all DVD's, but mostly, in the newest release FW 090626_1828, but not the beta of
090731_1629_beta. The newer FW releases for the HDI BD Prime are, on the whole, much better---but you MUST get a 256MB or larger flash disk to upgrade it seems... see:

http://dune-hd.com/firmware/bdprime/

and

http://dune-hd.com/firmware/usb_flash_drive/

for details...

Even though the Base 3.0 does not have a bd-loader, will the region-free patch work on it?

The reason I ask is that I have 1:1 bd-rips on my hdd's where I left the region protection on them (A). They could only play after I installed this patch on my Dune Primes.

This would save me time ripping them again.

Is there any Dune BD Prime 3.0 (firmware: 091229_1411_beta) user who tested "region_free" patch ?

I bought my Dune BD 3.0 yesterday and it seems - have problem with playing some DVD ISO images - for all ISO DVD menu displays OK, but after starting the movie - the screen blacks and player returns to the list of files.

Do you think - such behaviour could be caused by DVD region mismatch ?

If yes - should I try to apply the patch ?

@DevilCry,
the mode button must be pressed quite fast but not to fast. Have you tried different speeds?

after a firmware upgrade you have to re-apply the patch, and reboot the Dune (power off preferably).

Works like a charm for me with the latest beta firmware

I am sorry, but I wonder if I am missing something. The patch is not working for me.

I am using firmware version 100307_2100_beta on a Dune BD Pirme 3.0. I patched the unit without any problem and with a "sucess" final dialog box.

I reset my player and when I press mute 4 times at the main menu (different keystoke speeds tested) nothing happens. No pop-up window to make any choice, nothing at all.

When I try to play my American DVE Video Essentials, a message keeps informing me that I in a wrong region.

Does anybody know why? Any success with this patch and the 100307_2100_beta firmware on a Prime 3.0?

Thanks in advance gentlemen

It works for any Prime and Base firmware

At the main menu press MUTE 4 times (no menu pop up !) press 1 for region A, 2 for region B then the menu will pop up says the patch is applied OK!

-MUTE MUTE MUTE MUTE 1 (for region A)
-MUTE MUTE MUTE MUTE 2 (for region B) ...

Hi,

yesterday I tested the region patch again (with Dume BD Prime 3.0), after installing a firmware update.
So I get the following result:

- the region patch still working after a firmware update, no reinstall nessessary!

To use it for Bluray:

-MUTE MUTE MUTE MUTE 1 (for region A)
-MUTE MUTE MUTE MUTE 2 (for region B) ...

is correct, BUT:

to use the region patch for DVD, I figured following (MUTE 4 times, not 3 times!):

-MUTE MUTE MUTE MUTE 01 (for region 1)
-MUTE MUTE MUTE MUTE 02 (for region 2) ...

AND
-MUTE MUTE MUTE MUTE 00 (to switch between region free and to accept the last region setting again, so if you have a RCE disk, use this)

So there is no need to uninstall this patch.

I just ordered my Dune Prime 3.0 and I see there are differing comments in this thread regarding the DVD region. This patch makes the player region free for DVD by default? And you don't need to adjust the region each time, like you have to for Blu-ray? I know you have to hit a sequence on the remote each time for Blu-ray, but for the DVD, you don't?

Thanks a lot, I look forward to setting up my Dune.

Hi,
have you read the first post?

-You can use the current patch to select DVD region as well... Press mute 3X and enter the 01 / 02 / 03 etc... depending on the region you want. Initially this patch does not change region for DVD, only offers selection of it...

Hi,
have you read the first post?

Ralf

Hi Kat, yes I did read that post, but I also read his follow up post.

So I wasn't sure which way it was. Sorry, I did read follow up posts and saw this

DVD is standard region free after using this patch so there is no region set.
For Blu-ray you set the player to whatever region you need at the time of playing the disk (A - B or C). Default, your region is whatever applies to your country...

I got a little confused with the differing comments, but I know now that it doesn't require you to keep pushing the button on the remote. Thanks :)

Has anyone tried adding the patch with the newest stable firmware, I have seen several people in here gaining success with 100307_2100, but how about 100413_1555?

Mine is tested on BD-Prime 3.0, The Max uses the same chipset and sdk, there is a good chance it will work, you might want to ask Christophe Cherel of HDland, their site advertises the max as region free. He is a member here and one of the authors of Zappiti.

Push at the remote control "mute" "mute" "mute" "mute" (four times) and then "1" for Zone A or "2" for Zone B.

I have a Dune HD Max which is having issues playing back USA (Region 1) DVDs. I'm guessing the disc is doing a region check of the player.

Can someone confirm that I just need to set this player for strictly region 1? The use of it is in a commercial envionrment where the media will either be store bought DVDs, or self authored HD media, so none of the more typical 'import' concerns which others (myself included) may have.

I'm guessing I can just install the patch and press 'Mute Mute Mute' & '01' and it'll work. Though, an above post indicates I may have to press Mute 4 times.

Just wanted to check to make sure this sounds correct to others.

tomlemon

For dvd's, it is still 3 x 'mute' and then 'number of region'!

That's fine, figured better safe than sorry since I've not run this patch before and haven't had need on my home setup. But, I'm really concerned about this other location since the one DVD I tried is region 1 and did not play. I will try the patch, see what happens.

I have a HD Smart H1 with the latest BETA firmware (the 2007 with the new GUI), but I can't get this to work at all.

I put it on a USB drive, insert it into the Dune, navigate to the file, hit Enter...and nothing happens. Literally nothing. It doesn't even appear to load the file. Nothing pops up at all.

I used the same USB drive and port to install the Zappiti GUI skin, which is also a ZIP file, and that worked with no problems.

If it installed and didn't work, that would be one thing, but this doesn't even seem to install, no matter how many times I click on the file.

****EDITED TO ADD***

Okay, don't laugh, but I didn't realize you needed to unzip the file and execute the file that was within it.

I assumed because the GUI skin I applied earlier launched from a ZIP file, that this would too.

So, if any 'special' people find this post; unzip the file first!

Works great! (Dune Base 3.0)
Thanks

The patch can not be wipped. Once installed it stays there forever, or, until the person who created the patch will give us a uninstall tool.

Hi everyone

first of all I have to say it's great seeing such a patch, thanks to the creator(s).

Is it possible the patch kills the drive (firmware) after a poweroff? (Smart B1)
(it's not responding at all .. no disk inside - it's like if it's powerless but it has power connected)

Thanks

EDIT: it's hardware rev. 219

EDIT 2: After I replaced the broken one I tried the patch again and this time it didn't break .. looks like it was just a faulty device after all. (now I'm running 120608 beta)

My Dune HD Smart D1 shipped with firmware version 110606_1315_update1. I purchased the Dune from the U.S. for use in the U.S. I don't use any Blu-Ray or DVDs made for outside the North American region. Unfortunately, during the initial setup, the European region was inadvertently selected when my intention was to setup with the North American region. I had reset my Dune, but unfortunately, the setup did not prompt me again for my region.

So now, I can't play VIDEO_TS media. The patch discussed in this thread is interesting, although my worry is that it may not be compatible when future firmwares are released. I don't really need the ability to play other regions other than the U.S./North American region. Is there anyway to officially fix this without having to use this patch?

Although the description of this region free patch says that it is for a specific version of the firmware, it sounds like other folks have been able to use this patch for other versions of the firmware.

Also, Dune came out with a new non-beta firmware last week, which I updated to (version 120815_2150). Has it been verified that this version of the firmware works with the region free patch (I have the D1)?

Thanks.

no reason why it shouldn't work. Just download the zip to a USb drive, plug it in the Max; select it and press OK to apply.
