View Full Version : Hi-Jack: How to FTP on KiSS DP-558!

Hi-Jack
29-10-04, 21:40
Please note, KiSS did not support FTP
before version 1.1.0 . This part of the TIP covers KiSS Version of FTP.
Look further down below for the old version.

KiSS presented FTP enabled firmware as of version 1.1.0 for DP-558.
To activate this option, you have to enter the network setup menu and set
the FTP active, either to READ or WRITE mode, depending on the way you
want to use FTP. In general, this will be write mode.

What you need:
- FTP program installed on your computer.
- IP Address of the KiSS player.
- DP-558 with FTP FW 1.1.0 or higher

Preparation
Upgrade your KiSS DP-558 player with the latest FW with FTP Support.
Version 1.1.1 at least which you can find in our downloads[/b

[b]Connecting:
- Make sure you set the Read/Write level in KISS Setup Menu.
- Open the FTP Program on your computer.
- Enter the IP Address of your KiSS DP-558 player.
- Select the "Anonymous" option
- Click Connect

Your FTP connection will now be made.
You will automatically be connected to the HDD folder, which is the folder
that contains your recordings and where Movies - Pictures and Audio files are stored:

HDD folder contains in most cases:
PVR: contains the recordings
Audio: Contains the music files you transfered to the KiSS
Pictures: Contains the picture files you transfered to the KiSS
Video: Contains the movie files you transfered to the KiSS

If any of the folders is not available, it means you did not yet copy any
content to the HDD of that type. Please follow these instructions to create
the folders:

Insert a DVD/CD with divx movies in the KiSS DP-558.
Select any of the movies by pressing the "MARK" button.
Press "PLAY" and the KiSS DP-558 will transfer the selected movie to
the HDD. It will now also have made, the "Video" folder.

Repeat this for pictures and audio if needed.
Questions, just post in here.

Hi,

Is it possible to connect a Kiss 558 with a Kiss 500 ? I wonder if I can record on the Kiss 558 which is located downstairs and then afterwards look to the recorded movie on a Kiss 500 that is located in the bedroom.

Any ideas?

The new 1.0.7 from MightyBob has the same problem as early 1.0.6.
I could not see/access the VOB-Files which are bigger than 2 GB. I can only see the idx-Files and small VOBs

Don't use smartFTP with DP-558.
Use FlashFXP.

Smartftp seems to have issues with KiSS or the other way around.

Hi Andy, no, this applies to DP-558 only :-)
You are in DP-558 Install Tips and tricks forum

As soon as new FW is released, we will create seperate sections for all the other models also while keeping the olde forums available as Read Only :-)

Hello there - I'm new to this, so please be kind...

I have just taken delivery of my FOURTH 558 as 3 of them were damaged in transit...good start eh??

Now I have been fairly busy reading this (and other) forums, to the point where my head is buzzing. Please can you clarify the following and I apologise if some of the Qs are a bit daft. Anyway, here goes;

1. How is the 558 connected to the PC? What connection(s) are used?

2. FTP program. Is there any particular one that is best to use? Does XP already have such a program within itself?

3. The latest firmware from Kiss (1.1.1). Does that support FTP or do I need to use a different version from here?

4. Are there other ways to transfer files? For example, could I play the 558 and take the output from the scart, via S video into my PC virtual video program that came with the NVidia AGP card? Is this too slow and long winded? Would it even work at all??

5. Why don't Kiss add a DVD burner in the machine. Yeah, I know, too easy.

Apologies once again.

Kindest regards,

Axxe

1: Ethernet Cable or WLAN Bridge
Ethernet from KISS to Router, from Router to PC
Or Cross Link Cable straight to PC

2: We advice to use FlashFXP

3: FTP is in version 1.1.1

4: You can connect to whaever source that can handle TV Signals with KiSS.
So, yes, it's possible.

5: It's a HDD recorder. :-)
You can easily (and faster) burn on PC.
Also editing is one item to thjink about.

6: Become a club member.
Oh, you did not ask that :-)

Hi Hi-Jack,

Many thanks for your tips and tricks. I have an issue which i cant find on a forum. Been to a lot. Hope you can help me. Following is my setup:
- Speedtouch home (-> tweaked to a PRO)
- Edimax switch
- XP-pc
- DP-558 (of course  )

Everything seems to be working fine. I have webradio, EPG on de dp-558 (had to set NAT rules for that). I installed PC-link and i can watch movies, etc. which are on my pc. But i can't FTP anything. I find it strange because, looking at PC-link (which works), i seem to have an interface between my pc and the dp-558. However, when i ping the dp-558 i get a time-out and when i try to establish a FTP connection it keeps saying "connection failed". I tried it with several FTP progs, incl. your suggestion of FLASHFXP. My "default" FTP prog is FILEZILLA by the way.

Hope you can help me. Thanks in advance.

Marco.

Hi-Jack
11-12-04, 09:12
Sounds like an error in NAT protocol or either some firewall blocking the connection. For streaming movies the PC sends to the KiSS but with a connectio by FTP the player should return data...

I assume that's where things go wrong...
Double check Firewall..

Thanks for the quick reply.

I have set extra NAT entries in my router. The following:
10.0.0.151:21 TCP
10.0.0.151:21 UDP
This didn't help. I have given the dp-558 a fixed ip-adress of 10.0.0.151. Hope thats not the problem.

I have tried it without my firewall running (Kerio Personal Firewall by the way). Still didn't work.

Further i think, that the communication between my pc en the dp-558 is established only throught the switch. The tweaked router is just for a link with the internet. Or am i wrong here?

So i will go on searching the net and cross my fingers that you may have a solution........or anyone else for that matter!!!!

I'd like to see some more IP-configuration of your PC and KiSS.
Is the PC running DHCP or does it also have a static IP address?

I'd like to know the following of both PC and DP-558.

hi winge and hi-jack,

Hope i didn't kept you both to busy. I just have kicked myself in the head

:st:

The ip-adres in the KISS was set 10.0.0.51 instead of 10.0.0.151 which thought i had given it. And i thought i already double checked everything. Hope you won't take it against me. Many, many regrets............forgive me!!!

I established connection with Filezilla. And i see two folders......lost&found and pvr.

By the way many thanks on your quick reactions. All your info, on this forum and tweakers made me choose for KISS DP-558.

Hi guys,

I found something that seems to be a bug in the 1.1.1 firmware.

If you change the TCP/IP settings (disable or enable DHCP) or you switch the unit off and then back on, FTP access will be DISABLED, no matter what you previously set in the configuration! So, go to the setup and enable FTP again.

I was quite amazed to see FTP not work at all when I could ping the unit from a PC... Then I found out what the problem was. If others can confirm this problem, it might be a good idea to add to the mini-FAQ at the top of this thread. Thanks,

Joe

P.S.: I also have to say that pretty much only this forum keeps my faith that I chose wisely when I bought KiSS products!

Hi Hi-Jack,

I've already reported this problem in the bug tracking system... ;)

On the other hand, if I'm not mistaken, seeing information in the bug tracking system requires you to register, while reading information on the forums is possible without registering. In that case, it helps people to see (potential) problems, along with the solution, on the forum already, without having to search for it in the bug tracking system.

Hi All,

When I try to send pictures or video to the appropriate maps on the DP558 with WS-Ftp then files put there are empty (0 bytes) When I make submaps first and put the files in those submaps everything works fine.
Is this normal or is there something wrong with the configuration of my DP-558?

Hi-Jack
21-01-05, 06:40
You made the folders manually most likely...
You have to adjust the access rights in that case...

chmod 777 /hdd/video and so on...
(or from the directory hdd chmod 777 video)

Try it...

hans2488
21-01-05, 23:03
I can't remember doing that, but it is possible.
The atributes of the maps are all -rwxr-xr-x
Also the atributes of the submaps I have made are -rwxr-xr-x
So looking with WS_FTP the atributes of all the maps and submaps are the same, But I can only put files in the submaps.
If it is a case of ownership it is more likely that I did't make those maps manualy. Because if I had, I would also have the right to write in those maps.

Hi
After tearing my hair out for 48 hours and reading every post on your forum I finally got my 558 up and running - and I'm actually quite pleased with it.
I'm connected via "Network with a PC using internet connection sharing" and using FlashFXP for file transfers.
In the 24 hours that I've had it running the FTP address in the Ethernet properties tab in the player has changed several times. I only notice this when I go to do a transfer and FlashFXP doesn't work. When i check the address in the player I find that it has changed and I need to alter the FlashFXP settings to mirror the new address.
Do you know of any way to stop this happening ?

Thanks
Gulch

Small question...

When i logged in at the FTP and i see my contents...
can i then adjust the filenames to what i want ?

ex:
composite video - 12.10.2005 - ....vob (to)
Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom.vob

?

Hi-Jack
10-05-05, 21:03
Yes, changing files names should not cause any problems except maybe with VOB files.
These com with IDX files that should be renamed as well in that case...

Best option is to try and if it fails, rename it again :-)

I am curious why nobody has mentioned using WinXP's built in FTP, instead of 3rd party software. The same technique can be used on a modded XBOX:

1) Double-Click "My Network Places"
2) Select "Add a network place"
3) On the wizard click "Next"
4) Click "Next" again
5) Enter ftp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (put your Kiss IP address here) then "Next"
6) Tick the "Log on anonymously" box, then "Next"
7) Enter a name, eg "Kiss Player", "Next"
8) Tick "Open This network place..." "Finish"

You now have a permanent link in "My Network Places" whick works the same as any Windows Explorer window to show/rename/add/delete files.

Question;

For example: 10/100Mbit connection. They are correct, there is a 10/100Mbit connection, but the player can only send at 1.6MB/sec. So they didn't lie to us. Still, if I knew every wordtwist, I would have NEVER bought this player!

I have sucessfully earlier made a video folder by copying some video files using the MARK and PLAY button. But I have a problem to do the same things with an audio cd. I insert the an original audio cd and from and from the play menu I cannot mark any files. If I select the cd icon from the setup menu and select explore audio files, no files are available..
Am I at the wrong place here..? I just want to make the audio folder so I can copy MP3 files to the Kiss player...

Just open a ftp session with windows XP (just type ftp://kissIP in a windows filemanager or explorer). Then right mouseclick and 'new->foder'. Name it video/audio/pictures. Any decent ftp program allows you to create these folders as well. (I stil don't understand why kiss forgot to create these).

Hi, I just bought a 558 (FW1.1.4-Stage2-B & rpc1 all-regions hack). Strangly enough the download speed (i.e. from KiSS to my Linux box) is 1.6MB/s (still no speed-king, but ok). The upload speed however, as you stated, is really pityful, with a sustained speed of between 50 and 60kB/s, (30 times slower).

This doesn't just affect the FTP speed however, it also affects the speed with which the PC-Link can pull a DivX file from the Open-DP500 server. This speed also gets stuck at 50-60kB/s, which is way too low, and thus I can't play movies from a remote location :( .

Well, apart from these nags, and the occasional hang-up I'm reasonable happy with the box. I hope kiss-technology keeps bringing out new and improved firmwares, not just for newer models but also for established products.

Hello Guys & Gals (hopefully),

I just bought DP-558 with 200GB disk. One of the reasons was to a) nice features for a home LAN & movie hobbyist like me b) active user group.

Installing player was very easy, despite poor instructions.

I've found only two issues with the system - one relating to FTP performance and second on general networking stability (using DHCP).

Questions;
1) regarding FTP - why is it only FlashFXP that works decently? FTP is a standard protocol - so what is different in FlashFXP basic settings compared to SmartFTP for example? Is it something with PASSive/ACTive mode or something else? Since SmartFTP seems to lose connection every now and then.

Also, why does the FTP transfer speed pump up and down? I get up to 5,7Mb in pulses (generally much lower), but generally the transfer speed follows continuous bell curve (up and down) - average transfer speed round 400 kb/s.

2) Kiss loses it's IP-address and subnet masks (basically all net configurations) every now and then. By disabling and enabling DHCP server Kiss renews the configuration and gets connection again. Is there anything that can be done to improve the stability of networking in this sense?

I'm trying to understand the internals of KiSS better..

Cheers,
Juha

Thanks, did that and haven't lost the connection now at all..

It is not a big deal that DHCP cannot be used, since the it happens very seldomly that the system is taken out and connected into new network and if that happens, manual config is easy too. However, there obviously is a small bug there.

I have 2 DP558 at my disposal.
With the 80Gb, FTP works fine at 1,6Mb/s
The 200Gb on the other hand loses
connection all the time, the lights (green, yellow) at the back goes approx every 5 sec out for about half a second.
Is this problem related to the

Hello,

I installed yesterday the 1.1.4 stage2 firmware. This improved the stability of the FTP greatly. However I still get only 600 KB per sec (please see below). It is the same speed both ways.

How to reach higher speeds that some people are talking about (1.2-1.5 GB/s)?

I'm connected through w-lan to fixed network, where DP-558 (200 GB) is connected. The wlan is only using 50% of the networking capacity of the PCs integrated wlan-card. And I do use FlashFXP.

Any ideas how to reach double the FTP speed I see today?

Can't help on this one..

However, I just noticed that I do get 1,5 MB/s when plugging the computer to the wall with a cable. The 600 KB/s limit was obvioulsly limit of my wireless (11Mbit integrated card on laptop, wireless router is faster but it does not help). Funny, it just was able to use 50% of the wlan card's capacity. That must be a feature of windows operating system ;-)

Just wanted to share this in case someone else is as stupid as I am not to understand the limits that wlan may set.

I read in the forums that SmartFTP isn't that good with the DP-558. I'm using that at the moment and I've never downloaded the files from my player faster then with that program. In 10 mins I managed to download 300MB which is a lot more then I did with FlashFTP.

Hm, I never had any serious FTP problems with my official v1.1.4. FW - until now.
Previously, I have been happily transferring files to and from my (portable) PC with Windows 2000 and FileZilla, and I have also transferred a few files from another PC, with Windows XP on it (also with FileZilla). The DP-558 is set to fixed IP address and I have a D-Link DI-604 to connect all machines (and the Internet). And the only real problem I had noticed was that the speed from DP-558 to PC was a little lower than in the other direction.

However, I now tried transferring files to the XP machine - and it just wouldn't work. (The FTP server of the KiSS basically seemed to crash after a little while.)
So, curious as to whether it was a hardware or OS problem with my other PC, I decided to fire up my first PC with XP this time, just as an experiment. (I have both XP and 2000 installed on it - professional versions of both - though I very rarely run XP.) And, sure enough, when this computer was running XP, FTP from the KiSS didn't work here either.

So I guess I've got my prejudices against Windows XP confirmed. 8) (I have never liked it.) Still, of course, KiSS should make their FTP server good enough to work even with Windows XP. But in the meantime, for those of you who haven't yet switched to MartinB's Stage2 FW, it might be worth trying some other (and better) OS on your PC.

To set the record straight, XP has nothing to do with it.
