View Full Version : SVCD / VCD problem playing from DVD or HD
I'm looking for people with the same problem to get this issue on the high priority list!
Its only me who wants to watch SVCD's or VCD from DVD or Harddisk? I found many reportings about DiVX related enhancements but very few with mpeg related bugs. So that are my experiences and maybe someone can help me solve this problem or we all have the same problem and Kiss should solve them
SVCD's and VCD's on a DVD (3-5 Movies) are not playing. Just a short black Screen comes up. Sometimes one movie on a DVD is working, but just one and sometimes only the half of the movie. Also the same behavior with most mpeg files on the Harddisk, also with the Kiss PC-Link software. I tried to patch the headers of some none working SVCD's (on DVD) with the declaration of a working SVCD (DVD-Patcher 1.06) with no success. I burned a DVD with all folder information of an SVCD, no success to get it work.
So, the funny part is, that every movie is playing perfectly if I burn it simply to a CD-Rom!
I don't just want to watch DiVX movies from DVD or HD, I also want to watch my mpeg files from DVD and HD!! Since most 50 Euro players do play SVCD's perfectly form a DVD.
Cheers and thanks,
TondeR
It sounds like you are burning dvd media in svcd mode. It really doesnt surprise me this doesnt work! I have no idea of the internals of a kiss firmware but it's probably detecting the dvd media and then expecting the data to be in dvd format and not in svcd format (with video_ts folder, vob and ifo files)
If you want to put several svcd's on a dvd media, I suggest you extract them to mpg files on your pc with VCDGear and then burn them on a DVD in data mode.

I want my SVCD with menu's to be played. The SVCD format is maybe not so popular anymore but anyone who has a bunch of these discs laying around just want them to play on this machine without first having to convert them to DivX/DVD format. As any cheap <?50 dvd player nowadays has support for the SVCD format I feel it's a shame the DP-558 has not.

Hi Zorglub
I used to burn it in data mode! Have you tried to do that?
The only thing that other players used to do is that they check the apect ratio of the first movie and you will have the same aspect in the following movies on that dvd. Thats the case why you should check the files with DVD-Patcher and burn just this movies with the same credentials on that DVD for example only PAL movies with 16:9 and not mix 16:9 with 4:3 and PAL with NTSC and so on...

Hey Niels
My last player had no support for DiVX and I used to convert this files into SVCD format. Burning this movies on a DVD is really space saving, since I need 6 CD's instead of 1 DVD if I have to burn it on CD and DVD's are also cheap now.

Are you sure FF and RW works from the remote?
On my VCD / SVCD's , burned as VCD/SVCD on Nero, FF and RW only works from the player. If i take a mpeg2 file, and burn it on a datacd, I can FF and RW from the remote, but not from the player...
VCD and SVCD's are own formats, like CDDA and DataCD
I have not tried to use a DVD for this, only CDrom
:D
And hello nielsvo !!
I am also sitting with VCD and SVCD's, only looking at the menupage... Try the Previous button...
Hi Christian
Sorry, the FF/RW button on remote also don't work with my player. Sorry for giving you some hope :? :) but it is working all the time with the buttons on the player :P (is it not nice to stand up every time? )
Cheers

Your original posts does not say anything about burning dvds in data mode since you talk about using DVD patcher - why would you use this tool on a data dvd !?!?!? It sounds to me like you were trying to burn on a dvd the svcd folder structure (ext, mpeg2, etc) and that will definetly not work. As I said, extract and burn as regular mpg files on a data dvd.
We verified all the issues with VCD/SVCD and will discuss these with KiSS.I totally agree playing this format should not be a problem and FF/RW should work from the remote as well :-)
Will be continued...
(We will only test with correctly made VCD/SVCD)
