Hi All,

Ok i have just released PPSGen V1.0

The application was designed for use with TVIX6500 (as that is what i have!).

PPSGen creates a folder structure to simulate the requirements of entering a PIN to take you to a folder with 'hidden' content. Of course the content is not hidden, merely obscured down multiple paths of folders. On the likes of the TVIX as you have to navigate to content, it acts just like having to entering a PIN.

I created this as want to keep my content on a Read Only share on my NAS, accessible by both my TVIX units. It supports custom themes and multiple options, as well as folder depths (PIN lengths of 3 to 10 digits).

It is available from my website http://www.dave-auld.net/
If you find any bugs, have feature requests or just want to discuss, there is also a dedicated forum on my site for the application.

Enjoy,
Dave

Very clever :)

But why not using the TViX Manager tool to create a password file to the folder?

Simply,

1) Want to keep the Share read only at the tvix end
2) TVIX password is 4 digits
3) Can be used by any media browser.

Cheers,
dave

I see ...

(1) But why do you need "write" access to be able to use TVix password?
I can imagine that you can set the password ONCE and then set the folder to read-only. TVix will still be able to read the password.

(2) 4 digits is hard enough to guess the password :) And I am sure the TVix is not in public access where a lot of users try to break it.

(3) This is good reason, but does other media browser also has somekind of password protected folder feature?

1) correct, but i currently have 2 tvix, and looking for another 2 media streamers for my house, but no guarantee i will buy tvix next, waiting to see what the new gen are like. Also If you protect a folder using 1 tvix, does the hash algorithm used to generate the password file on the disk common and still work with a different tvix? don't know, never tried it.

2) yep, but hey its not unusual for pins to be longer now adays. 5or6 in length, people tend to re-use pins (although not good practice).

3) probably, but then you would be mixing up alsorts of file on the media.

Anyways, i saw a need for my use, made the app and sharing to the community! thats what it is all about.....

cheers,
dave

(1) TVix manager is a Windows application which has nothing to do with TVix device when it is in operation. So, I believe it does not use any hash value or anything from the TVix hardware. Thus, when you put a password file in a folder, any TVix will read it in the same manner.

(2) You will use the same pins for all credit cards, bankings, or even TVix? :) I see your points and I do the same as well ... lol.

(3) Don't get me wrong, I am not saying your application is useless. It is a great app, clever idea, and certainly fit your needs. I only point out that TVix Manager is also able to protect a folder which works for "multiple" connected devices.

The only problem I can see is if I would like to update the folder (adding/deleting more contents), I have to deal with multiple folders path in Windows Explorer :) ...
