I going to buy a Synology CS407e and i'm looking for a guide to set it up with my m6400a.

I'm going to install 4 hdd in the server.
1TB for Full HD movies
500GB for DVD
320GB for series and a
320GB for misc

What i want to learn it to, if possible, to have the tvix use the first three drives seperatly.
Right now i have all my movies located on pc and use NetShare and the tvix therefore only has one network drive where i have all the folders.

How do i setup all the server options in the tvix to registrate all the different drives.

Thanks.

What I understand you want to install your drives in basic mode (not raid).
In this mode it will be 4 seperate drives, on which you can place maps.
This map you give it a name, set up your NFS (because this is working much better then smb) in your cs407e and the only thing now to do is go to setup m6500, networksetting and put down the ip-adres of your cs407e and exactly the mapname. Do this for each map seperately (only 4 positions), done. My advise, directly go for 4x1TB.
You can always first set up 1 drive with 4 map names and when its full, plug in a second drive and replace maps. You will see, when you start with hd-movies (and yeas you will), your drives will be full in no time.

thanks, sounds like something i can manage ;)
Network and setting are not my strong side.

Would love to have 4x1TB but already have the hdd in my pc to install ;)

Why not running these drives in RAID5? Granted, you have less space and you sacrifice some performance but at least you won't lose data when a drive crashes. You can still seperate your data by keeping them in folders. You can setup NFS to these folder (you can have 3 or 4 of them)

Imagine losing 1TB of data! 8O

According to Synology FAQ the CS407e now supports 2TB Western Digital WD20EADS HDD's.

I would also recommend using Raid 5, and not making 4 separate volumes. The tvix CAN switch between different NFS volumes, but it takes much longer than switching between 4 subdirectories on the same volume. I would put everything in the video-directory (so that you can use the "video"button on your Tvix as well), with 4 different subdirectories: one for HD, one for dvd, one for series and one for misc.
Switches a lot faster and with Raid is much more secure!

To run a RAID5 it's best to have equal sized disks. Say, 3x 1TB. That would mean you have to buy 2 1TB extra disks (preferably of the same brand) With your current HDs it's not wise to run RAID5.
So you could run them as seperate HDs but if one of the disks crashes, you lose everything on that disk. You could make backups of course ...

So you have 2 scenarios.

No RAID = higher risk or you make regular backups
With Raid = lower risk but have to buy 2 extra 1TB or 500GB disks

RAID or not, always backup your most important data.

Choose your poison :D
