View Full Version : How to make dp-558 region free?
Hi,
Can any one tell me how to make the DP558 region free?
Is there a way to remove macrovision yet?
Bosse
We have not yet removed Macrovision but it is possible by adapting the KHWL.O file in the firmware. For the region free, look in the KiSS DP-558 Install Tips and tricks forum on MPC :-)

Hi-Jack
I have read yesterday that ... without macrovision, the Kiss would be able to output 720p signal.... is it true ? is it available with any DVD movie ?
That's the first time I hear something about it... so I am a bit surprises
Yes, you can go up to 720p, above that Macrovision kicks in.
I have never tested or verified this but i have not heard it's not possible either :-)
Thanx for the guide Hi-Jack :)

If the source (i.e. the original movie) is shot on film (that is 24 full frames per second), the interlacing found in TV systems does not introduce any other image distortion other than that every other line of the full frame is shown each 50th second (if we're talking PAL and SECAM) instead of the whole frame being shown each 25th second. The result is that a film shown on TV flickers just like everything else shown on TV. This is why TV sets with "100 Hz" screens don't flicker as much (they don't turn off every other line evry 50th of a second, instead showing the last line).
The difference between the 24 frames per second on the original and the 25 frames per second in PAL and SECAM is compensated by running the film faster, making films shot for cinemas about 4% shorter when shown on TV!
Showing a 720p (progressive = not interlaced = every frame is captured as a whole image) on a TV set doesn't produce any better picture or less flicker. Instead a 100 Hz TV will reduce the flickering, regardless of if the source is progressive or interlaced. For progressive input to be of any difference you need to view it on a screen that is build for progressive formats, such as a plasma, DLP, computer screen or a projector.

I watch on my Infocus SP4805 that is 720p compatible.... Now, I am watching movies in 576p (from my kiss dp-558) that is wonderfull...
So, any other ways to improve a bit more picture quality (is possible) is welcome :D
So, you confirm I will see a difference ?

I'm not too familiar with how the specifications for projectors are given, but the resolution of PAL and SECAM is 720 pixels horisontally by 576 pixels vertically. Sometimes the video resolution is specified by just quoting the vertical resolution ("1080", for example, for one flavor of HD that is 1920 by 1080 if I remember correctly), so if that is the case with your projector, it can show higher resolution video than standard definition ("SD") video.
However, all DVD discs today are for SD, but your projector can handle even higher resolutions when they are made available.
The european standard for HD hasn't been agreed upon, but I've heard that one possible standard may be 1080 by 720 progressive, 50 frames per second. It seems you've got a projector that can handle this today.
Of course the projector resolution can be used today already if you connect a computer and use it as a display.
Hello
Is there any guide for adapting the KHWL.O file into the 558 to remove macrovision?
