View Full Version : DVD with black bars around
Hello,
didn't find anything in the forum so I open a new thread. I got my Prime back from divxplayer.nl with a swapped loader. It now seems to play all stuff I insert. It is a little bit less noisy but...ok...no more comments on that.
I have now the following problem. Everytime I insert a DVD I have black bars around the movie (not only on the bottom and on the top). I have to press the zoom button to see the movie on the whole screen. I hope that this is only a matter of options I choosed wrong...I do not know. My video settings are:
Video Mode: 1080p/23.976 (tried it also with 1080i)
Aspect ration: Auto
Auto framerate: 24/50/60 Hz
Any ideas?
Regards,
Andreas
Hi,
did you try aspect ratio 16:9? There is one possibility left where every player has wrong image format. This possibility is when the content is not anamorphic encoded but has 16:9 contents.
Ralf
Hi Ralf,
tried it also with 16:9 but same result.

I'm experiencing the same problem.
But it's not with all DVD's.
NTSC or PAL doesn't matter.
But the strange thing is that some DVD's are scaled to full screen and others are displayed in their original format on a 1080p output. That results in the need to zoom.
Haven't found out exactly where the problem lies.
This problem occurs both with fysical discs and ISO's and folder playback.
I've got this sometimes with downloaded dvd's. Is it downloaded?
If so, the dvd could be wrong (4:3) compiled. Try another.
Not one downloaded DVD. There are all original.

Quince
i noticed it also with some dvd`s.. with the prime.
But that was not my biggest concern.. i ordered one with internal hd..i get one withput internal hd..so i can send it back again
Hi,
look at the back side of the cover which format the DVD has. Especially in the USA wide screen is not on all DVD. If the format is 4:3 but the film has 16:9 you have a problem with black bars around the film.
Ralf
For example one film was 16:9. But with "Auto" and with "16:9" it has these black bars.

I have the same issue with some iso DVD and the only workaround is to use custom zoom. :(
I added the ticker for this issue in Bugs and Wishes on Dune BD Prime 3.0 in past:
- B-MOVV-010 - DVD playback has black bars around the movie (not only on the bottom and on the top). Only with zoom button to see the movie on the whole screen.
Maybe help, when you generate a debug dump file (press 3 times A button in any writable folder) after playback and publish it here.

Thanks...for adding to bug list.
Press 3 times the A button during or after playing the movie?
... no after playback of DVD with this issue, go to main menu of GUI, attach USB key, go to into USB key ress 3 times A button in any writable folder, and you will ask for store debug file dump...
Here are the detailed instructions for generating and sending debug dump files:

Hi,
For example one film was 16:9. But with "Auto" and with "16:9" it has these black bars.
And it was not an import DVD? I ask because in the USA you must look for the little words "widescreen version" to get an anamorphic DVD. I donīt know why but they sell still a lot letter box DVDs.
Perhaps itīs to complicated for them to switch their players to letter box:-)
Ralf
p.s. If here are some american readers. Sorry for this little joke but I am still a bit angry because I got a letter box version.
Today i noticed this problem myself when I wanted to play a DVD in its native resolution (so the dune won't scale it. but instead my JVC RS10 would).
However, when I selected the 576p resolution and forced at 50Hz. I noticed I got the black bars as well. I had to forcefully set my projector in zoom mode to fix this.
I fiddled around a bit and noticed that everything is OK when I put the dune into a 16:9 resolution (ie 1080p). So i set the resolution to 1080p at 50Hz and started the movie again.
Now I don't have black bar's and I am not required to use the zoom feature on the projector.
This might be a work-around for the people who have this problem untill a new firmware is released.

I made the debug dump file but I don't have the right to add attachments. :(
I actually wonder if this is a Dune issue now. I noticed this today for the first time watching analog TV. I had experienced it with the Dune before. Seems my TV set itself in Cinema1 mode. I get tiny small black bars.
Setup option to automatically adjust video output framerate 1035 - (2%)
Setup option to control aspect ratio (e.g. PAL 16:9) [new] 1003 - (2%)
