View Full Version : update your a200 to the c200 fw
if u have a200 ,but u want to use the c200 fw, PM ME.
And what are the advantages?
That sounds very interesting, yet illegal...
One would moreless have a cheap C-200 with full Blu-Ray playback, but I could be wron. Neither have I got an A-200, nor do I know howto do this.
Why is it illegal ? It is you box, do with what you want including hacking or installing any firmware you like
Domdom
If you play MKV or ripped BD it is legal ?
just because you can play movies you downloaded on the net on the popcorn, it does not make it legal.
Why not take the time to read the two sentences I wrote in my post again.
I wrote it is illegal, but I did not write that you should not do it. There is a difference!
Obviously the C-200 has a payed Blu-Ray licence and the A-200 does not.
Therefore exchanging the firmwares is not legal. I was simply stating a fact.
You can do whatever you want to do with your box, but oviously you should not try to ask for this in the official Syabas forum etc.
Changed the laws in last years? I modified a lot of firmwares for DivX players, posted to internet with my modifications and no problems in 4 years.
I thing could be a problem if Syabas will do this, or the media player producers.
In my country is some clone from another player and the people are using the firmware from another player to their clone.
Using the C200 firmware for A200 should start with packing and unpacking the firmware. I saw is possible for A110 and A100, but not for A/C200. The used program maybe must pe updated. ;)
enjoy,
Mtz
Changed the laws in last years?
Laws were not changed in the past years, they have always been there.
If people choose to ignore them, that is a different story. Just because you did not run into problems, it does not mean it is legal.
In my country we have speedlimits on motorways. Obviously many people, including myself ignore them - but sometimes I have to pay a fine because of it.
I remember there was a big discussion on this forum about exchanging firmware on Istar and other players with Popcorn firmware, because of DTS. Syabas had paid the licence and other manufacturers had not. Therefore using the firm on other players was possible - but not legal.
Now it is the same, just this time it is about another licence ( Blu-Ray).
Hopefully this longer post clarifies, what I was trying to say in my short post.
I think is not ilegal to put a Ferrary motor on my Wartburg or to put Coca Cola in some plastic bottle of Pepsi Cola. If I'm not making any money from what I do at home, nobody cares.
And I don't think exists any law about "changing firmwares" in some players as home user.
This offtopic discussion ends here for me.
If some user will try to change somewhere in firmware the "411" into "408" and try to have the C200 on his player I think is not ilegal even if it works. Ilegal could be if Syabas will say this. Even if Syabas can spread some info, this is not good for them because big money are coming from expensive players.
enjoy,
Mtz
AFAIK you'd still fail to play commercial disks when swapping both firmwares as the license on chip is missing and is not installed by firmware so what's the benefit if the baseline is already C-200 stripped from commercial playback/RF and display?
I'm interested, so send me a PM :-)
firmwares as the license on chip is missing
What gives you that idea? I thought the license can even be prolonged by new firmware. Atleast that was the info for the C-200. Otherwise all players would stop to play commercial discs after a certain time - do not remember how long this was.
Therefore a firmware update should be possible. Maybe I misunderstood.
But even should this not work, the C-200 would probably make it possible to get full menus on Blu-Ray backups with the A-200.
Anyway it would be cool if one could transform the A-200 into a cheaper C-200 alternative with all the bells and whistles.
But since none of us have an A-200 we will just have to wait for info from people who actually have the player ad tried.
As for the @Mtz_ Wartburg / Ferrari motor discussion - you can stick the motor wherever you please, what do I care :)

I'm also interested...
So send me a PM Plz.
Regards.
Heh I already sent a PM too...sounds like interest is growing...my A200 should be here by end of the week
folks,
you really think this would work til the ext update, which certainly would disable that, but you need and want it?
And imagine the trouble if you break your box.
Saved money to have a brick, since nobody wants to give warranty anymore?
Heh I already sent a PM too...sounds like interest is growing...my A200 should be here by end of the week
Still worth trying...curious to see how menus would work. I got my A200 today...John Q played with full menus while 8 Mile did not just the lite menus. Curious as to what makes the difference....
must change Product Code /PC/ on 5th line in WinHEX /I mean firmware/
in A200 FW is 411
in C200 FW is 408
so, you must download C200 FW and change PC from 408 /as in C200/ to 411 /for A200/ and save a file
Next- update A200 with that modified FW
Thats all
Bigger FW for C200 means that include java distribution /neceserry for play BD-J, Profile 2.0 content etc/
So who will try this first?
Also waiting for someone who can confirm that it works ;-)

Let's hope for you guys you can get through with it. I've ordered a C-200

I'm not risking a bricked player or no warranty support for a few BluRay menus.
All right per Hi-Jack's request I have good news. THIS DOES WORK!!!. I have sucessfully flashed my A200 with C200 firmware gaining BD-J menus and such. I have uploaded the modified flash package here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/348419511/C200onA200.rar.html
You must have a hard drive installed in order to use BD-J menus. The player acts pretty much exactly as before. I am not responsible for any bad flashes...however this did indeed work for me.

Congratulations to you, later you can update your a200 online~!
Yeah that will be another question I have next firmware...I noticed that when you go to maintenance info under settings its listing the firmware as 408. Hopefully next round I can just update straight to the next C200 firmware.

YES
now can we make for BD1 to work good?
c200 better than voir :p
edit: is c200 gigabit strong fast?
Is it possible to upload on mediafire or sendspace as on rapidshare its almost not possible to download something without an account :-(
Don't you just have to wait for so many seconds to download?

Don't you just have to wait for so many seconds to download?
Nowadays... Rapidshare does not let you wait for few seconds as it used to be...
You just get a blunt message instead..
All our download servers are fully loaded and your download can not be initiated now..
It also asks us to become paid users to initiate download...
I have checked many different times of the day.. but with no luck.
Here is a megaupload link as well:

Rapidshare, Mediafire, and Megaupload...this should accommodate requests
OK, but if Syabas put some kind of protection against this trick into the next C-200 firmware, and you will not be able to update anymore? Can you publish another firmware which will reset the original state of the A-200?

Hello there,
I don't have received my A-200 yet, but I guess it is, for the moment, as simple as updating with the original A-200 firmware. Nobody try yet ?
:p
there is no chance to put in some kind of block firmware for c-200 because hardware of A-200 and C200 is almost the same
The only kind of identification of FW is in the 5th line of FW.. - this line you can ease change as we talking about :)
Has anyone tested a external BD - drive? Is it possible via USB?
Hollydoc
Hi,
I've just received my A-200, can someone really confirm I can downgrade easily from C-200 to A-200 firmware (as it's the same version/date, i was wondering if any upgrade is possible...)
thanks in advance! :)
i got 2 questions:
- Anyone tried to play and original dvd/bd disc inside a bd-rom plugged on the s-ata port?
- Also syabas released a new beta for the c-200 yesterday, have you tried to directly update a "hacked" a-200 with it?

OK, but if they put an identification routine into the code (for example checking the LCD panel, or the RF remote electronics)... I changed the code in a C-200 firmware, and was able to flash back the modified A-200 to a real A-200. So, I think there is not risk to test and play a while with the "small" C-200 :)
i got 2 questions...
Original protected DVD from an USB DVD-writer plays fine. The latest beta2 C-200 firmware (from friday) works well, and updates the already modified A-200 without any problem, I tried this.

great news! any chance to get this beta firmware somewhere...?
thanks
Definitely would like the beta firmware...OZ can you upload that? I want to try the fix for TrueHD from M2TS files...
Beware
After hack of C200 FW and load it to A200 - slave-USB dosn't work !
FW of the C200 must be more modified to allow full functionality of A200
It's a great news ;)
There is no useful option for the fan in the A200 menu ?
Just in case I wanna try this out do I need to to know some special trick to flash it back to the original A-200 firmware?

no tricks
just load original FW for A-200
As long as the other 2 usb ports no loss on the usb-slave port...
Are beta firmwares uploaded somewhere?!!!
There is no useful option for the fan in the A200 menu ?
Syabas is not XTreamer to make such jokes...
Original Blu-ray disk from USB Blu-ray ROM works on the C-200, but gives a "Bad region code" error on the modified A-200 :(
We knew this would happen as the license for BD is not transferred by firmware... so the only benefit you'd achieve is having BD menu's supported by doing this...
no tricks
just load original FW for A-200
I had a small scare here...
Did the firmware update... all went well.
Played with the C200 firmware. Nice... Ok...
Time to go back to original firmware... FAILED
"Customer not allowed to do cross upgrade"
Panicked a bit...
Grabbed a drink...
Got it back to original.
1. Download A200 firmware from website
2. Using Hex Editor... change the product code from 411 to 408. Basically trying to fool the hacked A-200 running C-200 firmware to accept a firmware update thinking it's for the C-200.
3. Upgrade firmware using modified A-200 firmware.
4. Get another copy of A-200 firmware (unmodified)
5. Upgrade again using unmodified firmware and you're back to original.
Here's what I noticed using the C200 firmware;
- USB ports started acting wonky. Plugging stuff in the front would sometimes say Fail but is actually mounted properly.
- Slave USB port in back doesn't work (as previously mentioned)
- BD menu is fun, but not worth it if you can't even play commercial BD even using an external USB BD-Rom drive.
Thanks for the experiment :)

good to know, thank you!
I guess i'll wait for the beta fw to test this (I hope we'll see the beta around...)
In case the usb continously fails, then there's no way to change the firmware since upgrade is done through usb?
I have a question...
After the crossgrade and eventual return to original firmware I am not sure but it looks like I can still play BD menus.
I don't have any BD rips here so can someone please confirm if indeed the Java menus still work after returning back to original..
Thanks.
Movies with basic blu ray menus will load fine on the A200...however those with advanced BD-J menus will not such as Zombieland.
New C-200 beta firmware has been released this week.
...where can we get the new beta??? nothing on the official forums so far... link would be greatly appreciated...
you cant - beta firmwares are not public firmwares
new firmware is out for the C200
anyone tried the new 16MARCH C-200 f/w in their A-200 yet (02-02-100214-19-POP-408-000)?
I currently i have the last release of the C-200 f/w (02-02-100128-19-POP-411-000)) on my A-200 and so far things look good (full blu ray menu). So i just wanted to know if it was really worth "updating" it to the newer C-200 firmware?
thanks!

Do you get any of the USB issues speak about?
i can connect USB drives to my A-200 without any problem and stream from them.
Have not tried connecting my A-200 to my PC on the "slave USB" connection as i dont really have the need to...
i may try this later to see if it works, but again it wont bother me if it doesnt work as i dont need that functionality.
so no one has tried the latest C200 firmware yet:
16MARCH C-200 f/w in their A-200 yet (02-02-100214-19-POP-408-000)
Yes it still works. Follow the same procedure on the latest C200 and the same process to flash it back to A-200.
I really don't wanna cheat Syabas but it's the only way to get HD Audio to bitstream on the A-200 using BDMV folder structures or BD ISO. If I used the stock A-200 firmware, only Core Audio is bitstreamed to AV Receivers.
I think it's worth losing USB Slave port for now.
thanks, much appreciated. My only reason to do the firmware switch is also for HD AUDIO
I dont feel guilty in the slightest. I paid good money for a device which turns out is making false claims. If i have to use alternate firmware to get my product to do what it is advertised to, then so be it...
Can someone please post the modified version of the latest firmware?
Post deleted, wrong topic!
Can someone please post the modified version of the latest firmware?
Hi,
did you already cross flash to the C-200 firmware? Yesterday i actually managed to update my C-200 firmware (running on my A-200) to the newest version by using the online update tool :p
If you do not have the C-200 f/w already on your A-200 then it really is easy to modify the firmware for the C-200 to get it to work on the A-200.
See an earlier post for directions then just download a free HexEditor to make the change to the BIN file.
I just bought a TViX 6600N which is a lot more expensive than this unit, and now you guys have full BD menu support AND bitstreamed HD audio?
Since USB slave isn't working, can I ask what speeds you get through SMB/NFS transfers to the internal drive? How about fan noise? I can still cancel my TViX, wondering if it would be a good idea...
I wouldn't base my purchase decision on a unsupported feature.
Yes it works, but who knows for how long. As it is even the C-200 firmware still isn't finished.
If you want supported features.. get the C200. You'll sleep easier.
Is seems you don't need a harddisk installed in the A-200 for the BD-J menus to work. The USB thumb-drive / memory-stick trick for the C-200 also seems to work for the modified A-200:
1.) Format an USB Stick with 2GB or more to fat32 or ext3
2.) create directories "bdj/ada/" and "bdj/buda" (case sensitive) on the Stick
3.) plug in the USB devices and will be automatically mounted as PERSISTFS
4.) Now you can playback BD's with BD-J and BD Live
I can now play BD-J disks but BD-Live doesn't work (also doesn't work with a harddisk installed for me).
Does BD-Live work for anyone else?
Is there any way to force the 'simple' Blu-ray playback functionality of the A-200 if the full menu's do not load for some reason or another?
Could be that BD Live is disabled on the rip?
Could be that BD Live is disabled on the rip?
Could be. I'll do some more tests tonight and rip some of my own original disks as well.
Edit: so you where right. I ripped my original version of Watchmen using the last version of Anydvd HD and the BD Live functionality seems to work with that rip.

Amazing, thanks, I was going to buy a SATA HDD just for the BD menus, but now I dont need to!
Works great with USB stick. I can't believe such a powerful little machine this A200.
Anyone try DTS-HD and True HD audio, doesn't seem to work on many Blurays that play on the C-200

Got dts-HD and TrueHD working on all the titles i have played on my A-200 running C-200 f/ware. This is over 25 BluRay rips in ISO format....
Anyone try DTS-HD and True HD audio, doesn't seem to work on many Blurays that play on the C-200
In the Setup menu, go to DVD/Audio and set PIP to OFF.
This is a known issue wherein content with PIP would only send multiple PCM streams to the receiver for PIP to work.
so this means that the A200 can now decode TrueHD Audio to LPCM and not just pass through? I need it to decode it ..,
Well, with optical output you get the "normal" cores of the DTS HD and Dolby True HD, so, yes it does decode trough optical output (but you don't get de full real HD audio thing). It's the same like a standalone blu-ray player with it's optical output.

Could you give a short explanation how to change in the product code using Winhex? I have used Winhex to open the C-200 firmware (bin file) and got a long table full of figures. Cannot find where to chage the prodcut code.
I also succesfully put C-200 FW on A-200.
Loaded the modified one from RS-link here in this thread and updated via USB.
Then was able to update for the newest C-200 online. :-)
Great and many thanks.
So my Mede8er and LG-370 have to go...
Why does the LG-370 have to go?
Can anybody try what is shown with the key sequence (Slow,2,8,2,8) on a200 updated with c200 FW? What does the a200 with a200 FW show on this key sequence?
Mede8er is not able to show BR-menus, so the LG 370 was there to allow me that.
As A-200 now shows all BR-menus there is no need anymore for the LG and the option to play physical discs, they all are ripped to HDD anyway.
Besides, when dealing with the problem Mede8er (latest Realteks in general) playing 23,976 with 24 instead of 23,976, what gives a freeze of 1 frame every 41 seconds I recognized yesterday the LG-370 has the same problem. (Yes, wasn`t used too much at all) so it would have been sent away anyway. I am quite sure LG won`t fix this...

At this time I only have one untouched BR on my HDD - V like Vendetta - , and one shrinked by BD-Rebuilder, however complete BD-structure.
All others were remuxed to a single .m2ts.
As my BR are ripped with AnyDVd to HHD BD-live most probably is disabled?
Never used BD-Live as I am not really interested in.
Looking at the covers of my BRs there is only one where I can read BD-Live, it`s Gladiator.
To test it will take some time.
BD-J-menus: How do I know whether it is a BD-J-menu? - The Jar-folder in the BDMV?
Both V like Vendetta and King Kong have a Jar folder and both show the full menu properly.
BD keys: Error
DRM keys: Found
What does this tell us ??
It tells us what was confirmed early in this thread (if you backread);
The ability to play retail BD is not just firmware. This mod to the A-200 doesn't make it a C-200 ;)

Rrright. Alternatively you may want to try just to put the BD into a PC-drive which you then can have shared in the network. At least this works with my TViX 6500a without any problems. Did not try it with the HDI or HDX units though.

Will try this tomorrow....
To test BD-Live you must initialize the internal SATA HD as System Storage incl. formatting. This could be done with the menu point which installs the NMT-Apps to the drive. With this 4 partitions are created:
1. ~1GB Linux ext3
2. ~0,5GB Linux Swap
3. ~2GB Linux ext3
4. Rest of disk Linux ext3
The 4. partition might be repartioned/reformatted to Ntfs afterwards if you want.
BD-J is contained e.g. in King Kong, Gladiator, New Moon.
To access a BD drive on PC you must mount it into a folder on a mapped partition to get the menu working. If you share the BD-Drive directly the menu will not work.

I understand mount drive into a folder, but what do you mean with "mapped partition"?
Kink Kong showed full menu - so BD-J seems to work.
A-200 did all the preparation of the HD incl. apps, so there
should not be to do anything else?
Will rip Gladiator to HD tomorrow to see whether BD-Live does.
I understand mount drive into a folder, but what do you mean with "mapped partition"?
"Mapped partition" means the hard drive or partition form the PC which can be accessed by the Popcorn. It is the partition which is shared where you have mounted your BD drive into a folder. OK, you do not really need to mount or map it on C-200. You can just browse it.
e.g. You share the D: drive and have mounted your BD-Rom into d:\bd-rom. The D: drive is a partition of a harddisk in your PC.
A-200 did all the preparation of the HD incl. apps, so there should not be to do anything else?
No.
So, gave it a try.
I simply shared my BR-drive from the computer and additionally I mounted it into a shared folder.
I could access both sources from A-200, but could only browse through the folders, so you have to choose the appropiate .m2ts manually. (AnyDVD HD was running)
This done movie plays, selecting audio-tracks worked as well.
The BD-live-thing.
I ripped Gladiator as BDMV to HDD keeping BD-Live.
I could then choose BD-live from the movie-menu.
An info came up that there is an update, then a screen with several movie-trailers.
Choosing one of them led to jump out of movie back to folder structure.
Every thing I choosed on that screen gave the same result.
Besides - I did not see anything that belonged to Gladiator - so what is this BD-Live good for then?
However, put the disc into my LG-370 to see what I see there.
I first got the info BD-Live material would be in english, pressing OK gave "Coming soon"
Really don`t know what this wants to tell me.
I don`t have another BR with BD-Live.
However there maybe was some useful info though?
Can someone explain how to user HexEditor to change the prodcut code from 411 to 408. I used HexEditor to open the bin file but can not find "411" on the fifth line.
@mysticc:
How did you do the mount of the BD-Rom into a folder on PC? It shall be done at the place where you could change or add the drive letters (Windows PC).
e.g.
1. Create the folder d:\BD-Rom
2. Add the folder d:\BD-Rom in the control panel where you could change or add drive letters to your BD-Rom device
3. Share the D-drive
Now you could access your shared D-drive from A-200. When you push OK on BD-Rom folder the movie should be started.
Is it working this way for you?
What I did:
1:
Computer - Manage - Disk-Management
Choose BD-Drive - Change Driveletter or path - Add - choose a empty folder on an NTFS-partition
This then shows content of BR-drive in this folder.
2:
Simply share the BR-drive.
Both Shares show up in A-200, however "OK" on BDMV only jumps into the folder. ("Play" as well)
Nr. 1 is working with my C-200. But you must share the parent folder or drive instead of the folder where you have mounted the BD-Rom! Otherwise it would be the same as the shared drive (Nr. 2). The Popcorn must see the complete BD content in a folder beyond the share. If it is directly within the share it can not be played. Only folders can be played.
Okay, will correct Nr. 1 and try again.
So, correcting Nr. 1 is working - mounted BR-drive on PC behaves like a full BR-Player on A-200, except BD-Live.
There I get the same as when trying on the PC with Power DVD 9.0, "..need Profile 2.0 bla..."
Thanks shv

No need. Just download the already modified firmware in this post:
http://www.mpcclub.com/forum/showpost.php?p=178500&postcount=22
Install, then do an update and it will update to the latest C200 firmware. I did this and it works perfectly, BD discs with java menus work flawlessly.

Can someone explain how to user HexEditor to change the prodcut code from 411 to 408. I used HexEditor to open the bin file but can not find "411" on the fifth line.
Here it is:
http://www.abload.de/thumb/unbenannt41qe.jpg (http://www.abload.de/image.php?img=unbenannt41qe.jpg)
Just for the point you want to modify the next FWs by yourself! ;)
So just set the cusor in front of the zero and change it to one and do the same with the eight because to use the FW it must be 411 and NOT 408.
Can someone post the modified A-200 firmware that would restore A-200 to the original condition i.e. running with A-200 firmware. I have read all the posts but am not relly comfortable with the Hexeditor.
I have a question about a A-200 with C-200 firmware. Can anybody tell me, what happend, if the A-200 with C-200 FW plug into the power socket. Is the A-200 starting automatically as a A-200 with the original firmware or is the A-200 off?
A-200 with C-200 FW starts when getting power - hell of a crap.
At German popcorn-hour-Forum Werner wrote this is because of the external powersupply - what I think is nonsense.
Other devices I own with external power-supply don`t switch on when plugging in.
The C-200 contains an ATX power supply as known from PC. The A-200 has an external permanent power supply. So it belongs to the HW how the devices are switched on when they get 220V power.
C-200: Powers just the standby circuit until it is completely powered on with the power switch in front of the device or by the remote control. Power latch is part of the ATX power supply.
A-200: It seams that it does not split the external power supply into standby circuit and the rest of the device. Maybe a power latch was not implemented on the main board. Therefor it starts up completely if external power supply gets powered.

How much saving in production might this missing part be? - 20 cent, 30 cent?
Complete failure in design - developers should be locked away with bread and water for at least a month.

Nice talk , Domdom .
Hello
I'm new here. I just received my A-200. I've downloaded the latest C-200 firmware: 02-02-100428-19-POP-408-000.bin
I used neo hex editor to automatically search and replace any "408" string with "411" string. The editor has found and replaced 2 entries. Is it now safe to update the A-200 with this modded firmware? According to this tread, there is only one 408 entry to be changed. how come the hexeditor found 2?
Anyone tried this with the May 7 c200 release?
I really don't want to brick my unused a-200.
Please help.
Thanks!
Best just to change one "408" since it is proven and dont know replacing both "408" can revert to original A-200 firmware or not.
Check out earlier postings by another user in this thread regarding how he reverted his A-200 back to the original state.
Hi,
i´m getting a A-200 this week and i´m interested in Full BD Navigation, so i decided to give the cross flash a shot.
One question:
I read about the A-200 starting as soon as the power source is connected if the C-200 firmware is flashed. This does not bother me that much, but i´m wondering if the deep standby does work as before? Same low power consumption with C-200 firmware as before?
I tested a friends A-200 with stock firmware which only consumes 0,4 watt in deep standby. Is the power consumption still as low with the C-200 firmware?
Thank you :)
In my opinion, it should be the same power consumption as it is dependent on the power adaptor in used.
Thank you very much. I will test it this weekend and post the results. :)
Just tested:
Same power consumption with c200 firmware. Deep standby seems to work exactly the same.
Does anyone use the latest c200 beta 02-03-100807-21-POP-408-RC2?
If not, which c200 version do you use?
I use the latest firmware from here:
http://www.popcornhour.com/download/C200/firmware-C200.html
(7 May 2010)
When i install the beta firmware 02-03-100807-21-POP-408-RC2, my internal harddisk does not get detected. :-(

Sure, it would be more convenient if it did not turn on immediately when receiving power. That being said, it will only cost you another 10 EURO to buy an extension socket with its own power switch - presto, there is your power on/off.

Are you able to revert back to the current firmware (7 May 2010)?
Yes, but before that i reverted back to the pretty old c200 "recovery firmware"
(which is just a normal firmware i think, just a very old version)

Thanks and I will wait for the new firmware first. So you changed just one location for the 408 or two locations?
I did not change anything. I used the rapidshare download firmware from this thread. After this you can flash c200 firmwares without any modifications.
But yes, i do think only the first occurrence has to be changed if you need to do it on your own.
I will try RC3 today - but according to the changelog nothing sata harddisk related has changed, so i guess we´re stuck with the c200 final from 7th May for now (if we want to use a sata harddisk on your a200). Don´t know why...
A friend tested the cross flash on his A200 and he has the same problem - sata hardisks get detected with 7th may c200 final, but not with rc2 beta.
I registered just to give this a shot since so many of my videos are straight blu ray iso's from my collection. Worked like a charm after the initial updating. Thanks so much!
I hope the hard disk issue on the beta can be worked out relatively soon though.
I don´t know if the harddisk issue will be fixed for us - the issue does not exist on "true" c200. :-(
Very strange since the c200 final works very good on the a200 with the sata disk.
Well if people around here can figure out how to cross flash these, Im sure someone can (hopefully) find the bug. I have faith :)

My A-200 is having the latest version (14 May) and I can't flash the C-200 firmware (change the 408 on one location) as it prompted saying the unit is already on the latest version.
So I am waiting for the latest public release, hopefully this week, to flash it.
I had no problems flashing from A200 FW to C200 Beta (self modified).
I did this in the beginning while diagnosing the harddisk issue.
But as i said, the easiest (and probably safest) way is to flash the already modified c200 firmware from this thread and after that you can flash any unmodified c200 firmware.
Why don´t you try this?
Don´t think the final will be out this week, there is a nasty subtitle bug which just has been reported. Also most likely the harddisk issue (only present on a200, not on real c200) won´t be fixed. Maybe they fix it later when the final is out and they start to port the final to the a200.
Actually having the chance to sit down and play with things last night, Im not sure how happy I am. My A200 was practically flawless. Since the flash and upgrades, sometimes iso's wont play (blank screen), when I press stop it wont go back to my menu/yamj, and even had a few random locks while watching a movie. These are with full BD isos
Everything is on a wired whs. No wonder C200 owners arent happy. Anyone else having issues?
Well I tried to edit my last post but couldnt. Anyway, I turned off bd menu "full navigation" in the settings, and everything works fine again. Did I miss something in the setup?
Just tested some full BD menu BD to test my cooling mod - had no problems.
But i would suggest using folders for compatibility reasons.
Did you flash the unmodified 7th May Final and reset all setings after that?
I did flash the unmodified May 7th firmware, but didnt reset. I was curious if I might have a bad flash or something saved. I'll report back soon. Thanks!
I'm trying to go back to A-200 firmware and it says cross-customer update is not allowed. :( Anything special I need to do to get it back to an A-200?
Stay calm :)
Afaik: If you want to go back to A200 fw you have to change the first (and only the first!) occurrence of 411 to 408. (Hex Editor, hope you read carefully through this thread?)
Then you´re able to flash back to the A200 firmware.
I did that, but was hoping I could get it all stock. For some reason I'm not able to get DTS-HD while playing a folder structure when I could before when it was 100% stock.
What i did (and would suggest)
- Reset Settings
- Flash C200 back to A200 (changing 411 to 408) using old A-200-Recovery-Firmware
http://files.syabas.com/popcornhour/download/A200_recovery_091114.zip
(You did that i think? Did you use the recovery-firmware-file?)
- Reset Settings
- Flash to latest A-200 final via USB (unmodified firmware file)
- Reset Settings
- Reformat your HDD/USB Stick using the "fresh setup" option
(- Reset Settings)
I doubt that after that anything is left over from the cross-flash. After all these steps the problem must be caused by something else.
Thanks for the double flash tip.

Hi there. Question to this problem (sata harddisks): did the nmt detect the usb-device (with nmt-apps on it)? so it is at least possible to use upcoming firmware with usb-device? thx

I'd rather have the sata over the single file HD audio playback.. Have you tried flashing/reverting back using the may firmware just to check if the sata drive will work again?
With my A200 @ C200 I play everything trough network and I don't have any HDD inside my A200.
In this case is it safe to flash to this new firmware? (I mean I don't care about HDD/SATA issues)
Updated my A-200 with newest C-200 FW - worked. Internal HD without function.
I'd rather have the sata over the single file HD audio playback.. Have you tried flashing/reverting back using the may firmware just to check if the sata drive will work again?
That doesn't work either. Successfully reverted back to the May firmware but internal SATA still not recognized. This is NOT good, I have a LOT of stuff on there I can't access now!
EDIT: Went back to original A200 firmware using the method posted here:
http://www.mpcclub.com/forum/showpost.php?p=179170&postcount=51
Then tried the update back to the C200 firmware posted towards the beginning of the thread. Once it got through I got a fail error and had to do a firmware recovery. It wouldn't accept the A200 recovery but successfully recovered with the C200 recovery image (where is that original theme?? I want it!!!). The unit finally was able to recognize my internal drive again, but that firmware didn't seem to bitstream HD audio from the ISOs I have on the internal, so I did a straight update to the May C200 firmware and I'm back in business right where I was just before I updated to the latest C200 firmware that killed the communication with the internal drive.
Guess I'll stay away from this new firmware unless someone finds a way to get it installed without it killing off the internal SATA.
can i connect a ntfs formatted sata drive to the a200 or do i have the nmt to format the drive first?
I presume you are making general question, which has nothing to do with cross flashing. In any case, you can use NFS formmated HDD with A-200. You will need to install NMT only when you want to use the NMT app.
@ K@pI thx i now sorted the things out
@ NoahFecks had same problem- after flashing August c200 fw on a200 no more SATA HDD functionality.
-Flashed to Feb 10 C200 FW, no SATA.
-Flashed back to Jan 10 clean A200 fw, still no SATA.
-Tried firmware recovery to A200 with jumper in the middle. The unit wont let me, although i reverted back to clean A200. It accepted C200 firmware recovery file, but had still no SATA
-modified Product ID from 411 to 408 in the A200 firmware Recovery Image, the unit accepted the Firmware. SATA WORKS
-updated to May A200 FW, SATA still works
bye
PPl asked me, so heres how:
To change product ID find this line and change either to 408 (C200s ID) or 411 (A200s ID).
http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/1144/changeproductid.jpg (http://img842.imageshack.us/i/changeproductid.jpg/)
After I have updated the latest FW, my Popcorn A200 is not able to see the internal harddisk. Could anyone tell me how to downgrade back to FW A200? Please tell me the way to solve the problem step-by-step.
Thanks,
CSJACK

Ok, new A200 firmware is out. Who can figure out the differences and get the internal hard drive working again on new firmware?
Easy way to recover your HD after A200 update with C200 firmware (26 Aug 2010).
For all steps put the downloaded firmware to a usb key :!:.
1) Use this file (http://www.2shared.com/file/zCgWhq8b/Back_to_A-200_02-02-100208-19-.html) to revert your A200 to original (no HD).
2) Than use this file (http://www.2shared.com/file/7MvX5NC-/A200_recovery_091114.html) to recover your HD.
You can update now your PCH with latest A200 firmware ;-).
Someone got the nerves to test the new C-200 firmware (08-10-2010) and see if the harddisk will work on the A-200?
haha.. i am just downloading it now but am too chicken to try it first!
I still have the 16March firmware (02-02-100214-19-POP-408-000) which in all honesty seems to work fine. Only small issue i had was with Avatar (Red_BIRD) BluRay menu popping up all the time during the film.
With regards to the latest C-200 firmware rendering the internal HDD inaccessible, i dont store any movies on the internal drive as i stream from my unraid server. Therefore can i still watch BluRay ISO's even though no drive is recognised on the machine? I read in the release notes that a USB thumb drive can be used instead of an actual HDD to allow full bluray support (BD-J and BD Live)

I think a USB thumb drive will do the Blu Ray trick. But I guess you'll have to try and find out.
I hope you'll have the nerve to try first,.I’m not going to, I AM a chicken (cluck, cluck, cluck!).
Someone needs to get some guts to try the new firmware.
BTW I have no guts

No HD in my A-200
I will update tomorrow......... brave one ;-)
Did update my A-200 with latest C-200 FW via Internet - all smooth so far. Settings remained and BR-ISO with menu working.
Thanks mysticc. So, how about someone with an internal HDD try updating now :)

Well I decided to be brave and give it a chance. Flashing the orignal Feb firmware, then did the upgrade. Lost the internal HD again, but usb works. I havent tried all usb ports, but I know theyre at least giving power.
More to come as I actually begin to play movies and streaming.
Edit: Streamed a couple of sd shows just fine. Both the front and back usb ports worked as well.
I'm not going to change. Need the harddisk!
Same here. The firmware I'm using now is just fine, don't have any issues with it so I'll just stay put.
I'm posting it again (can't seem to edit my post??)

Thank you lemkeant.

Thanks for testing it out. I won't update neither..
I was wondering if it would be possible to modify the C200 firmware to make it work with the HDD in a A-200. Maybe knowing the language this firmware is made... I really don't know, but it could be a solution...like a custom firmware =)
Does anyone know?

Im wondering the exact same thing. Maybe like Sybas caught on and changed a simple flag? Problem is, I havent tried to look through the firmware yet at "sata" entries or something simple so an idiot like me could figure it out.

Hello guys, I'm new in the forum. I have the A-200 and updated it to the latest firmware. I also noticed before updating the firmware that my A-200 is using C-200 beta firmware (02-03-100731-21-POP-408-000) prior update. All movies are ok using the 02-03-100731 firmware.
After flashing to the latest A-200 firmware, a lot of my BD Rip movies cannot be played. It can be played using the February release firmware.
My question would be, if I crossflash it using the latest C-200, would it be back to normal?
Where can I download 02-03-100731-21-POP-408-000?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi mysticc, thanks but cannot find it on the link.
When you update your A-200 using the latest C-200 firmware, do you encounter problems playing BD Rip or ISO?
Thanks.
No, no problems with BR-Rips.
BR-Iso - I only have one - I don`t use ISOs - but this one works.
I see you are asking for BETA-FW - Betas are not public - therefore you cannot find it on their page.
Use the latest C-200-FW.

Hello mysticc, thanks for the feedback.
I hope no problem when I use the C-200 firmware because when I bought the A-200 almost 2 months ago I did not realized that the firmware installed is for C-200.
One last thing, I read in the NMT forum that in some cases there are error after installing C-200. Do I need to worry about this?
Thanks again.
So far not for me - did several updates via Internet.
In case update goes wrong try it from USB.
Just take care you have a working FW at hand on USB.

One last question, how did you update via internet? You need to change the 408 to 411 manually using the Hex Editor, right?
The 1st time has to be done via USB to get C-200 FW on A-200 - use FW offerd in this threat or edit FW on your own as described - then you can update via Internet as you get C-200 FWs offered.

You can change the region code in the C200. Might be what you need to do. If you cross flash though, expect your internal hard drive to stop working.
Thanks to all the people who tried the latest fw update and confirmed that the HD doesn't work. Can I just confirm that if I upgrade and lose my internal drive, I can just plug in an external USB pendrive or USB hdd to replace the "lost" internal drive. So really what I could do is remove my internal Sata drive and put it in an external USB caddy, connect it via the USB port and then upgrade to the lastest c-200 firmware?
I need to make sure I can still view all my bluray iso backups (with full menu support)
alternatively, has anyone analysed the newer c200 firmware to see why the hdd doesn't work? We must have some programming guru's out there who can find out the problem? (let's face it if they can hack the iPhone 4 in a few weeks, then I'm sure this shouldn't be a challenge!)
thanks

For BR-Java menu support a USB-stick is fine - doing the same here - no HD anymore.
great! can you (or someone else) confirm that my sata drive in a USB caddy, connected via the USB port would also work?)
Just being ultra cautious :p
cheers
After I've build my A200 into a moovika fanless case, I thought it was time to flash my A200 to a C200.
Did the flash this weekend. No internal HDD support, but I stream everything from my Synology NAS. Works perfectly. Watched the A-Team from a bluray iso(with full menu support, and DTS-HD). Played fine over LAN. I use a simple 2GB Flashdrive for the Bluray data

Just download the version that's listed in this thread, install, then either use a usb to update or do the internet option straight from the NMT. I just use the internet personally.
Installed the new firmware, and I am now reflashing to a200. My Bluray iso's didn't load as fast as with the previous releases.
And to be honest, I never use the bluray menu's anyway...just wanted to see how it looked like :)
Didn't even try the NMJ, because I first have to rename most of my mediafiles....will do that next week, and hopefully by then, the official a200 firmware with NMJ is out..
Ok, updated mine, didnt really see much in the line of changes. Still no internal HD. NMJ seems great though. Just stupid that it wants to add my movie jpeg files to the movie wall and the video wall. My WHS houses everything for me, and so the files are stored there. If they give an option to move files to a usb or internal HD, that'd be worth downflashing back to A200.
Wish tv support was way better too. IMDB + TV sucks
More sources will likely be added over time for TV-Series. This is an early start of NMJ... Once the whole structure is further developed, more sources will be available... (Tools are in progress of development that use more sources)
What are the odds that this will brick your A200?
And is it possible to flash back to the A200 firmware?

Got my A-200 on Friday and tried this last night - worked great. Just downloaded the latest C-200 fw, hex-edited the model number as mentioned earlier in the thread and installed via USB - works a charm, thanks all.

Anyone updated to the new Dec 8th release? All OK?
Anyone updated to the new Dec 8th release? All OK?
Yeah, I did. Honestly, nothings changed at all that I can tell. I saw the release notes, but seems like a minor firmware change

Thanks for confirming. Yes, mostly a bugfix release (and mostly relating to the lame donkey that is NMJ) by the look of it although this one looks useful to me:
Fixed BDJ sometimes cannot start playback
as I'm extending my collection as far as BDMV structures go.
Still no solution to the loss of the internal HDD with these new updates? I have a 2TB internal that I'm not willing to lose in order to update to newer firmware.

Right now there isnt. I just run a 2.5" hd in mine, but Ive ordered a tiny external usb case. Im going to mount the hd in that case, put it in the A200, and plug it into one of the usb ports by fishing the cord out the case.
Has anyone flashed their A210 with C200 FW?
Has anyone flashed their A210 with C200 FW?
A210 = A200 hardware, so it shouldn't be a problem.
Guys, I have been down the route of this firmware cross flash and it does work except for recent C200 FW updates create this loss of HDD problem. I can't imagine manufacturer wanting to modify FW to allow this as they want you to buy a C200. Forget them all and buy a HDI Dune Base 3. This unit does everything flawlessly - all video codecs, even decodes HD Audio into 7.1 analogue RCA plugs at back as well as raw stream. They have the decency to refer to the Gigabit Ethernet as "experimental", as we all know it is a limitation of the Sigma 8642 chipset, but it doesn't work too badly at all - whereas the A200 at Gigabit just locks up. And guess what - its cheaper than an A200, looks great etc..... I have relegated my A200 to the back room.... don't mind a bit of early adopter fiddling but eventually I realised I just want to watch HD movies over the network.
@ grantg
can't agree more. Had A200 first, later bought a Dune SMART H1.
Where the A200 fails, the Dune succeeds.
Some examples:
¤ Downmix of HD Audio to Stereo (A200 cant do- license problem)
¤ Autoframerate on stand alone .VOB file (A200 fails)
¤ Correct Autoframerate on 29,97 fps material (A200 fails- outputs @ 60.000 Hz instead 59.94 Hz)
¤ Dune supports all sort of HD audio streams (A200 fails on some)
¤ Dune has deinterlacing setting you can choose from 3 deinterlacing options (A200 has none)
¤ Dune supports BD menus (A200 cant do- license problem)
¤ etc.
¤ etc.

Ive been thinking about it, and I think I have to disagree. I have 0 issues with my A200, except I want full BD menus. All HD audio streams work, the downmix of Dolby HD is the only issue right now (DTSHD downmix is fine), and although the autoframerate may be wrong, I had no idea until I read this. Until either one has a source direct output, I dont care.
The problem with some Dunes, is they arent worth 2x-3x the price of the A200/A210 right now. I know the new SMART series might change that, but no need for me to spend over $250 to make a lateral move. Maybe when a new, more powerful chipset comes out, but I still think A200 is bang for the buck #1

I totally agree with you, +1! It is the bang for the buck player in the market now. :)
Hi, i have a problem that is born after i have change the firmware (c200 firmware) in my A200.
The my A200 dont see more the twonky media server inside my Wetern digital Share space NAS.
In real the a200 see the twonky media server, see the file inside but dont read it and make an error message: and all this after i put in the a200 the c200 firmware......
Its very strange.
I use the Twonky media server because is the only way to use an iphone to control the 200 nothing to power-one a TV....
Is possible to resolve this problem?
no one is able to help me???
no one is able to help me???
It makes no sense why it sees an A200 and not the C200. They are EXACTLY the same. Did you reset all settings on the A200?
Yes, i have reset all the setting!! but dont operates more the Twonky media server.
I dont know what i do: there is a special configuration in the characteristic setting of the internal Twonky server inside my WD Sharespace NAS?

Im not fimiliar with Twonky at all. Is it easy to uninstall it, reboot, and reinstall it? Maybe its a setting inside of Twonky?
If I flash my A210 with C200 FW (after edit), later on I can update directly with C200 FW, or I have to edit the FW every time.
BTW, I do not use internal HD, I understand this is the only problem found so far?
future updates will be without edit. just update from menu
Thanks!
Is there a link for the C-200 Dec 8 modified FW ...?
I will give it a try since I do not use internal hard drive
Can someone post the FW required to get back to original A200 firmware, i cant use the slave anymore.
Tried hex edit and didnt figure it out.
I made an archive for people who want to switch back to A200 firmware (may firmware)

Modedit : Archive verified
Just flashed the Mar 11 C-200 firmware to my A-200 and all seems to be working fine. I don't use an internal HD so can't confirm whether or not it's recognised.
My main reason for cross-flashing was the vastly improved subtitle support in the new C-200 firmware for HD MKVs. One of the family has hearing issues and relies on the subtitles.
When the A-200 firmware catches up, I plan to flash back.
A210 = A200 hardware, so it shouldn't be a problem.
but it seems that nobody has done yet ...

I cross flashed a friends A-210 at the weekend and confirm it works just fine.
It is always a matter of personal preference. bang for buck is important. I paid about $250 for the A200 then another 50 Euro for a decent quite fanless box for it. I bought the Dune Base 3 for $350. My A200, even with C200 firmware will not read an ISO file over the network (only from the local HDD which of course it can't see on an A200 with C200 firmware), and manyof my movies I keep in ISO format to retain BD menus. The Dune does everything you could think of absolutely flawlessly and I have never had to tinker with anything. On a like for like basis the extra $50-$100 is the best bang for buck I have ever spent to get HD movies streamed flawlessly over my network.

Huh? Who are you talking to?
bang for buck is important. I paid ....blah blah blah...flawlessly over my network.
You seem to have posted in the wrong thread, nobody here is interested in you droning on about how amazing your Dune is, this thread is dedicated to discussion on the process of cross flashing A-200s with C-200 firmware. Your "contribution" is completely irrelevant.

Your A/C200 doesnt read iso's over the network? Actually, it does. You just need to use either SMB of NFS sharing. If you try using Windows sharing, then yes, Windows sharing wont support iso's.
Glad youre happy with your Dune, but an A200 from Amazon is easily the best bang for the buck. Less than $150 shipped in the US

anyone tried crossflashing the 9th may c200 update yet
Is it required for the USB stick to be formatted to ext3, or, FAT32 format would work just as fine to make BD-J work?
I don't mind losing SATA internal HDD.
Thanks!
Hi,
Any news on using the the C-200 9th of May update for the A-200? Does TrueHD AC3 core extraction work? Still no internal HDD?

I edit the C-200 9 may firmware and flash mi A-210, and work all, full BD menus, and later install a internal disk sata and work OK!
Sorry for my bad English.
Thanks to the this forum, for the tweak for my A-210.
Interesting news maglione66.
So either the internal hdd problem is fixed in the 9th of may update or a workaround is to install an "empty" hdd after flashing with c200 firmware.

Yes, Yes, I install the hard disk, empty and NTFS formated after, flashing the A-210.
I don't have too much full blu (with java) images, but, King Kong work Ok, Despicable me Ok, Meet the Parents OK, The Incredibles Ok, Bon Jovi Live In madison Square garden freeze on exit, U2 360 don't work.
No need to crossflash now, the latest A200/210 firmware offers full BluRay menus. The new firmware also offers Auto YCbCr colorspace and AC3 core extraction from BDMV/BD ISO and M2TS files.

Yes, its True. Work OK, full BD/java menus with A-210 new firm.
Can I update my already mod A200@C200 with the 3 June 2011 online only C-200 firmware?
Thanks in advance for your answer.
I was wondering the same thing. I can tell you that I get an error when I try.
I have tried an HDD (ntfs) with movies. my A200 (with c200 fw) won't read it :(.
I will try to change to a200 firmware so I can try again.
I will post my conclusions.
I have changed my PCH-200 FW back to its original. Now It's a PCH200 with PCH200 FW.
HDD works perfect. Loads faster than a USB HDD. No need to reformat. Just plug-&-enjoy
I can still play FullBD Navigation.
Enjoy :)
