View Full Version : Xtreamer pro your thoughts
My first post here so be gentle
Come from the land of OZ and have gone along that yellow brick road of search, read, search, read but have a questions
Bought one of those unknown brands about a year ago what a disaster, this site has been a real help to me so I don't make the same mistake
Even though the Xtream doesn't seem to have good user support after reading some of the post here the new Xtreamer pro seems to do what I am after (has anybody got one yet)
My question is
What media player's have a good interface with my PC so that I can control the unit over the network rather than use the remote ?
Thoughts that come to mind is this old saying...
You fool me once, then shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.
You fool me once, then shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.
Decent hardware from a company that lies non stop.
Consistant lies so dont buy until you hear or see an owner state what you want, I own the Xtreamer and its a great product for the price but its not what i payed for so now they try to sell the Xtreamer Pro. Once bitten twice shy! Ill wait till reviews come out.
Thanks for the replies doesn't look good for xtreamer unless they pickup there game
What other units (not worried about price) would allow me to control the media box over the network?
Cant seem to find any but there are so many now
I heard they're planning a special edition called the Xtreamer S.C.A.M. edition LOL (NOT)
In my opinion, I wont buy the Xtreamer Pro based on my experience with Xtreamer who is unable to support HD Audio but now this feature has disappeared into the depths of the ocean.
I have preordered the Pro with old customer discount.
You may not like the firm, but their price/quality and performance is outstanding.
They have a very good forum and users developing applications along with Xtreamer.
Pro is built on the same firmware as the old Xtreamer so should work just as good.

I was going to purchase as well with the discount but not until they confirmed DTS HD Master Audio support, but they wouldnt have that and still no confirmation from Xtreamer that the Pro will get its licence, so now it has passed and i miss out. But no way i was going to believe there promise after purchasing the original with the same promise.
Well i understand your hesitation.
But i do believe that the one to blame should be realtek, why did realtek not report that the chip would not be able to do so,Xtreamer was not the only player affected by this problem.
But once burned,i understand.
At least that's what we are led to believe by Xtreamer. And coming from a company with such a great history in lying and manipulation, my first assumption is that this is NOT the whole truth. If it were Realtek's fault, then Realtek would have to pay a great amount of compensation, which would in part at least reach the pockets of the consumer. Have you heard any comments from Realtek? I haven't.
RealTek players unfit for HD Audio!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just after the whole "more affordable" RealTek segment crumbled down after a though competitor joined the lower price range, the PoPCorn Hour A-200, yet another topic sets back the RealTek players, deeper than ever before but evenso, not everything is lost. Rumors stated lately that these chips are unable to support HD Audio and we got it confirmed, it's true... Neither current RTK player based on 1073 or 1283 chipset can support HD Audio by the chip.
HD audio cannot be added on the current 1283 and 1073 chipset because the internal control register for HD-audio has a problem (single bit problem). To address this, the silicon will have to be changed so unless a revised chip is brought, none of the RTK based players will enjoy HD Audio support by hardware as this requires a change in the silicon. Even if this would be done (doubthfull), numerous consumers are left with a none HD Audio supported player unless... it's done by software... which brings another complexity to the issue, wondering if it is "as good" as the support by chip...
We have confirmed it is possible to bypass this limitation by software however don't know if it is as good as supported by the chip directly or whether all brands will be able to fix it via this workaround. As stated by several posts, DViCo with their TViX M-6600N is one of the brands looking into resolving the limitation however no details are known given the sensitivity of the subject... (or will it even be legal?)
Regardless how we look at it, the customer in need of HD Audio support is now possibly loosing any hope for their acquired player to support HD Audio, where it has been promised by some brands to be added and now deemed impossible unless via workaround / soft approach. (This will definately be an issue for those not having any development going on themselves and mainly count on RTK's default firmware...)
How important is HD Audio for you?
Would it have changed your decision on buying the RTK player you have today?

Hi-Jack
Well this is not from realtek, but it is good enough for me.
Among others Ac-ryan and Mede8tor has the same problem. They too had written it would come in a future firmware.Granted Xtreamer had it in their specs from day one and this is where i see the problem.
But hey i have losts of electronics saying in very small letters "specifikations to change without prior notice" or something like that.
Xtreamer is doing a great job. IMO it's the best device I use it for all my Video. But just because of the HD audio passtrough they are getting a negative status... Come on guys give them a break they will get it right in the new 2010 products !
For now I'm planning to stop supporting Sigma because Realtek is the game for me.
ps. for all the people that are waiting until HD MA audio works 100% there will be a new special action so take a deep breath and relax.

Xtreamer can be controlled from your pc.Do not use it myself so do not know how good it is and how many functions it can:confused:.But look at xtreamer.net if you want better info on that.
And yes the first people has just recieved the Xtreamer Pro.If curios look xtreamer.net forum topic i believe "first Xtreamer pro in the wild".
Mine has just shipped 12th of may.so looking forward to my new toy in a couple of days.CANT WAIT!!!!!.
But good luck with whichever player you decide to get.Just remember there are no perfect players, you will always end up missing something:cry:

That's true. But in my case I ended up missing my files - Xtreamer has corrupted my movies. Looking in the forum I'm not the only one with this issue. There are bugs and BUGS. And this one is a show stopper for me.
I would personally divide the Xtreamer users into three categories:
1 - HD Audio complainers
2 - Ugly bugs complainers
3 - Happy users
It seems to me that these categories have equal number of members :-(

Mmmmm Iv'e got an xtreamer and ive just noticed this bug, when i play a movie .mkv it just goes off on one and plays something completely different than what i selected (weird) fw 2.3.1 patched btw.

Hi PavelS.
Sorry to hear about your problem.Yes i have tried that too,not all my files but suddenly a video i had seen, could no longer be played.I had to run a scandisk on my computer to correct the errors.Would really be nice to have a tool in the player to check/scan and correcting diskerrors, before they destroy something.
But now the fun part. Before xtreamer i had/still have(collects dust)egreat m34a.I had an usbdisk on it and i had the same problems.Filesize was suddenly wrong, and it would not play those files, and they had indeed play before.
When i got the Xtreamer i used the same usbdisk, and to my surprise they played fine and filesize was correct.Connected it again to egreat, maybe i remembered wrong and it was some other files, but no, same error and no play.
Scanned the disk on my computer and it found many errors and corrected them.formated it and used it only on my Xtreamer. But until now only one file was corrupted on my extreamer, and i do not know why.?
Bugs and bugs. There will always be bugs in a firmware, this is not special for Xtreamer. At least they are constanly trying to correct and improve the firmware.I myself had problems with hdmi and my Sony-lcdtv.Within a couple of weeks a new firmware that corrected the problem was released.
your three categories, yes it seems to be so.but the same amount no way!
Edit "hope i havent misunderstood you in this.I am danish so the finer nuances in english may be beyond my understanding."
If you have something to complain about then you write a post to let them know.
If you are happy with it you tell your friends about it,very few writes a post saying that you are soo happy with it.
If only 1 out of three did like the product,Xtreamer would be a dead firm long agoo.Instead they are having trouble producing units enough to satisfy the demands.
Even on this Xtreamer hostile:) forum many likes the product but it is the firm and their politics they dont like and that i do understand.
New edit: I just saw your post in another thread,i think that is what happened to me too,i do remember copying via lan,and watching movies at the same time.
When i have the time i will test it again and see if this was why i got the file corrupted.
Never thought of it until i read your post.
Mmmmm Iv'e got an xtreamer and ive just noticed this bug, when i play a movie .mkv it just goes off on one and plays something completely different than what i selected (weird) fw 2.3.1 patched btw.
Hi i do not understand,do you mean you select a mkv-file,and it plays one of the other files in that directory. Is it the next movie or?
I had some movies with weird codecs/settings it couldnt handle(had to recode them),if i selected that movie,it went along down the directorylisting until one could be played correctly.
This i something i do not like,Xtreamer plays a movie ,it ends, and it does not stop but continues with the next movie.
They are aware of this and will make it so that play and select(enter) on a movie behaves different.
If you turn preview on and are on the mkv does it show the video?
The error i had in previous post did that if i selected or previewed that file it showed only a minute of video, but video from another file?.

eg: selected daybreakers 1080p mkv , and instead of playing that it decided to play an episode of the the vampire diaries instead no video just audio, and i also noticed that the filesize of daybreakers had changed, noticed this twice now!!!

That usually happens when the Xtreamer corrupts the HDD just load it on the computer and run scandisk and it should fix it.

Edit "hope i havent misunderstood you in this.I am danish so the finer nuances in english may be beyond my understanding."
You understood right, scrub. (Btw, I'm not native English speaker either. I'm from Czech Republic)
Well, I bought Xtreamer because of this features, which are crucial for me:
- playing movies
- support of internal HDD
- WiFi
- Samba
- FTP
- price
After few days of using Samba I found my files corrupted. Hm. I said OK, I'm gonna use FTP.
Wow. It took several tries to connect and even then the copying of 700MB movie was so incredibly slow that I had to stop it. The other day I found another file corrupted.
At this moment I went really upset. I had to plug my USB flash disk to PC, copy the movie there, walk to Xtreamer, plug it there, copy to Xtreamer.
To sum it up, Xtreamer has Samba and FTP features which were crucial for me but which are pretty unusable.
Now, tell me. Is it a bug or a lie?
For somebody who doesn't use that features, it's a bug.
For somebody who made a buy decision on that features, it's lie.
What did I wrong?
Did I forget to read some small letters on their web page, which states: "Samba and FTP don't work correctly and will probably make you angry"?
Or did I misunderstand their meaning of SMB and FTP?
Or am I such a stupid idiot that I believe every line of their promises and rely on it?
Yep. Maybe I am an idiot but actually I've learnt a lesson.
I will never buy a proprietary movie player again, because when something doesn't work I can't do anything about it just to wait for next fw.
I don't want to play the never ending "Wait for the next fw" game again.
Now there's only one possibility for me: HTPC
When something doesn't work there, I can fix it in several ways.
Also, now the price is no longer crucial for me.
I will spent more money to have a system I can rely on.
Mind you. I'm talking about Xtreamer because that's the unit I bought, but it doesn't matter. If it was let's say WD TV Live and it betrayed me in the same way like Xtreamer did, I would be angry too.
Pavel
Yes is does sound like it could be a good idea to run scandisk. If filesize has changed something must be wrong.
Hope it solves your problem
regards.

Hi again PavelS
These damm forums you sit type an answer, thinking, correcting, and checking your spelling then at last "submit" and you are logged out.Maybe i am just to slow.:)
Did it only happen to you using 2.31 firmware?
I have had mine for more than six months and i only saw it once.
But you are right one wonders when it will happen again.Think i will run scandisk on it once a week, just to make sure.
But many different things can make bugs, almost all of us have different hard-ware,router/switch-computer,settings,like jumbo-frames sometimes can cause strange issues. This can make problems for some, and others do not understand not having these problems. And we all say its the mediaplayer(and maybe it is).
Now off-course you are not stupid, never said so,and the part about "xtreamer hostile" there is a smile.
I am just trying to help, learn and understand.
I will try ,when i have the time, to see if watching a movie and copying at the same time is the reason for my problem, maybe it is just to much for the Xtreamer, having limited cpu-power.
To Lamb
If you still havent found out which one to buy, or have questions about the pro i hope to have mine sometime next week.
I will be glad to help if i anyway can.
Ps. Sorry for all of this, it is your thread and many things have become off-topic.On other forum ( do not know which one) :) this would have been split up or worse.Seems they are way more relaxed here.
Did it only happen to you using 2.31 firmware?
Hi scrub,
yes, I'm using fw 2.3.1
You are very kind trying to help me and others as well.
Hopefully you are not offended by aggressive tone of my posts. I should cool out little bit :-)
Well, yeah, I'm still using Xtreamer because currently I have no substitute for it but I have already mentally spurned it. What I'm definitely going to do is to take the internal HDD out of it because the data are not safe there.
I will put the HDD into Synology DS110j which I'm going to buy in few days. Then I will buy or make HTPC and from that day the Xtreamer will be only a history for me.
Sorry to say that.
If you are happy with your Xtreamer then it's fine.
I'm not happy with it and for me it's time to try something else.
Best regards,
Pavel
No Pavels im not offended and i do not find you aggressive!
Problem may be we both arent speaking english so maybe we do not always read/write what we did intend to?
By the way please wait just a little while, just been on Xtreamer forum and GREAT news.
New firmware in a couple of days, should correct some issues? and hd-audio passthrough for the PRO.And the the long awaited jukebox too.I know they promised before but i do believe it is really going to happen very soon.
Before you spend a lot of money, maybe just try this new firmware out?
Hope the best and fear the worst.
But i like your attitude, trying something else.
Some seems to think im not happy with it so no one else should be happy.
But sure you cant really beat a HTpc,wish i had the money.
To the persons who read this thread,i am truly sorry.
You wanted to know about the Xtreamer Pro,but we keep talking about the "old Xtreamer".
I havenīt got mine yet but it has been shipped and is on its way to Denmark right now.So i really canīt tell much about it,since i havent played with it yet.
But look at Xtreamer.net community forum and read the thread "first xtreamer pro in the wild".you do not have to be a member to read.
There are some videos and testing, and more to come since they only had them for a couple of days.
A new firmware should be on its way,do not know when, but they say a few days.:!:Hd-audio for the pro should be included,as should the long awaited movie-jukebox.But see for yourself if you are interrested
About moviejukebox maybe only a patch to help the community to create it.Admins post say few days for jukebox other place it is called a jukebox-patch.
In the thread "movie jukebox soon" some says another 2-3 weeks other places maybe 1-2 months.
But i guess we will see soon when firmware 2.4 will be released?
Hope the best,fear the worst
Can you extend further on this?
The Xtreamer pro got a licence for HD audio passtrough, but the software isn't capable to do this ATM.
They made a special offer, for people that owns the Xtreamer a 50 euro discount that expired on 30 April. A lot of people didn't ordered it because they didn't trust Xtreamer to make HD audio work in the upcoming firmware. Therefor, they told me they will make a new special offer when HD audio is working 100%.
Grtz,
Roelio
@ Roelio .... thanks for the info and will wait for the new offer.

You gave the answer I was looking for and after some more reading it appears that the pro will do exactly what I want it to (control over the network) some screen shots would be nice, from what I have read it will work on existing Firmware so anybody tried it?
Quite a few of the posts got off topic and degraded into lets stick the knife in a bit unfortunate but I can see Xtreamers attitude does not help it appears that the developers are trying to market their own product and get a little carried away am sure if they had good management and marketing people they would say don't announce new features until they are working .(just leak them out )
It is a real shame as I think this is a great product with real potential the movie jukebox looks incredible hope it does work
Lets Hear some GOOD points
BTW have ordered one
Hi Lambs.
I just got my Pro today:D
But have not the time at the moment to test it out,got to go to work, rather busy at the moment, have a lot to do.:-(
I joined Mpcclub for the very reason you write about.
I am not saying Xtreamer is the best,or errorfree or anything.
And i do understand why some people, having had the troubles i read they have are angry at Xtreamer.I myself would be to,if i had been treated the way they did.
But i feelt sorry that nobody really answered your questions.
And if you look at my post i just pointed you to the place where you could find some information,to help you decide for yourself.
Well, hope you will be happy with the pro.
By the way do not expect to get your pro right away.It does seem, like they have sold more than they ever expected.
If you have more questions i will try to answer as soon as i can.

Hello,
I'm also hesitating about getting the Xtreamer Pro. I'm looking for a 2HDD enclosure to access data over the network basically NAS function. Since this one offers this + additional features i could prefer it over a Synology 209 or a Qnap 2HDD enclosure NAS. I'm not looking at the fastest device but value streaming HD material over the network.
Is the Xtreamer Pro Gigabit ?
Has the ventillator been improved over the first generation which was claimed as being noisy.
Can you do RAID 1 ?
Thanks in advance for your review
hi Fishbone
Xtreamer Pro is not a NAS,it is a mediaplayer.
The NAS function is the same as in old Xtreamer.
The disks have as far as i know absolutely no raid-function.
I have just put 2 harddisk in mine and Xtreamer PRO sees them as two separate disks.
And a third ?.do not know what this is,just found out i used a harddisk from my old NMT
seems to be divided in two.I can an see a syb8634 directory and it is EXT3.well that explained it.
It has not gigabit lan.
I know many places it was written that it would be combined Xtreamer+Etrayz. That is wrong.
Xtreamer pro is basicly old Xtreamer with added memory,2diskbay,esata,and some other improvements.
Almost forgot:the ventilator is way better and way more silent than i my old Xtreamer.
It doesnt bother me at all,no vacuum-cleaner there.
But then again,noise-tolerance/level is very different for us all.
And ive only had in turned on for a couple of hours, what is interresting is if it will remain this way.My old Xtreamers ventilator began suddenly to make more and more noise for each week.I bought the sidewinder cooler and fitted it to get it silent.
I use my Xtreamer as a mediaplayer,so i do not know much about what and how good the NAS-capabilty of Xtreamer is.
So please look at xtreamer.net there they have the specs.I know others have asked these question on their forum,so i suggest you look little around there.
And please if someone knows more or has more knowledge of this ,then correct me.As i said 99% of my use is watching videos, and fotos.
And i would really, really hate giving you the wrong info.
I can only tell you what little i may know,i am not a hard-core user or anything like that.
A review would be way out of my league, sorry.
edit: By the way i do think i saw in a post somewhere that hi-jack maybe would do a little review of his own.As he stated before it is the firm and their politics he has problems with, not their products as such.Anyway since more and more will be getting the PRO i expect more and more reviews will turn up.
scrubs
Thanks a lot scrubs for the feedback.
I have contacted the xtreamer company 3days ago now and no single feedback. That's just not acceptable at all. I understand they are based in Germany. That's not what i would expect from a German Company... No info on availability of the product.
Did not see any detailled review on Xtreamer Pro yet. Quite a pity. I'm specially interessted in the NAS capacity of the device as i already have a HTPC in the living which i use for media files.
Cheers!

Try to look at the community forum xtreamer.net,i believe others have asked about how soon they could deliver.Xtreamer is not a german but korean company,to the best of my knowledge. They have a depot in germany from where they ship to the whole of EU.
There are a usermanual for the pro you can download it here.
http://gator884.hostgator.com/~xtreamer/Xtreamer_Pro_UserManual_English.pdf
Maybe that will help you?
As i wrote before it is a very basic nas-function it has,the same as the old Xtreamer.
And bear in mind it does not have a gigabit lan.
Try to read a little around, maybe you are looking for a REAL NAS.
Would be a shame if you bought the wrong device. You could eventually join as member at xtreamer.net,there should be people who knows the limitations of the NAS in Xtreamer,or maybe tell you if it can do everything that you want it to.

I've just got the Xtreamer Pro last weekend (I owned two Tvix 6500).
I have also a Qnap 809 pro loaded with BD rips, BD ISO and many 1080p mkv.
I have to admit that my jaws dropped down when I connected it t network. It automatically found all shared folders, I didn't type even a single letter. The most important thing is that the unit played ALL the above material Flawlessly through .nfs . In fact, I have implemented UNFS protocol at Qnap.
Not even a small drop out or freeze. I selected many times fast fwd 8X and 16X during BD rip playback and when I selected again Play , it comes to normal playback INSTANTLY.
Needless to say what happened to 6500 especially with BD rips through network.....just unable to watch.
Regarding HD audio, I can confirm that the passthrough (which refers many times on box, manual, quick start guide) it doesn't work. It downmix everything to DTS.
By the way, the unit came with 2.3.4 firmware.
A asked the company about HD audio issue and they replied me that will be ready with the next firmware.
Personally, I can live without passthrough, let's admit it, you can expect everything with 174 euro....
I can't believe that I paid 450 euro two years ago for Tvix 6500 which is still with many bugs!
HI tasos.
I gave you thanks, not because you are happy with the pro,but because you bothered to post, many only post if they are having some sort of a problem.
By the way the firmwares for the pro do have bugs,as i am sure you will find out for yourself, but they are working hard on solving those issues.
They are waiting for the moviejukebox to be finished, before they release the next firmware, which should also have hd-audio? They are busy testing and debugging moviejukebox at the moment.
Hope you will be real happy with your pro.
greetings scrubs
Thanks scrubs, to be honest I didn't notice any bug (yet).
Anyhow, I have accepted the fact that there is no NMT player with no bugs. Period.
Whenever we accept that fact, then we 'will be happy
"Anyhow, I have accepted the fact that there is no NMT player with no bugs. Period.

Thats true indeed.
By the way, the unit came with 2.3.4 firmware.
mine too, it came with 2.3.4....
I couldn't find any significant bugs (well, pressing "Next Title" while playing a .mkv - there is no such a thing - goes into lala land).
Indeed, it found more shares than i could care for :) - that's a reminder to check my Buffalo NAS security - and, so far, played everything PERFECTLY!
As a 'NAS' seems to work just fine - the CPU goes up to ~15% if 2 movies are played simultaneously and i didn't see any hick-ups. Transfer rate is a bit on the slow side - ~3mb/s on a 1Gb network, same as FTP. I did not try the HTTP transfer though. I've installed 2 WD20EARS, those drive are not speed demons either..
What can i say, i'm more than happy with it, i can live w/o HD audio and movie jukebox perfectly well... now i feel sorry i've bought a WD TV live plus just a bit over month ago, i should've bought another Xtreamer Pro...
I'm buying an Xtreamer Pro now! The new realtek chips are hot and my old sigma Dvico 5100 will retire now! Hopefully DTS-HD and TrueHD works and also Bluray isos! Hopefully :)
DTS-HD & TruHD pass thru works. However there are plenty of users having HDMI 1080P connection users - including me.
Tomorrow I'll get my Xtreamer Pro and the first thing I will do is test 20gb MKVs and a Bluray 45gb image :) Also with HD sound!
Well now after some testing the Xtreamer Pro is definitely a great machine! But it doesn't recognize 23,976FPS properly, at least not yet :( That means when you watch 23,976FPS HD movies you'll notice something like a freeze every 30-60 seconds, but not for long of course. It's like a small drop-down. It's not very problematic but I still think this Xtreamer has a lot more potential and once they've fixed this problem, it's a nearly perfect player :)
HD sound works fine and also 45gb Blurays work like a charm :) They said in the next firmware 3.0 with the new SDK many things will be fixed, for example the 23,976FPS bug. But when will they release that firmware? No one knows, that's the problem :(
Holy shit I hope they'll fix it and then everything is fine!
I would say that a media player that can't even play the number 1 most used framerate format correctly is a big no-no. You'd think this was something that was high on their priority list? I read the original Xtreamer has the same issue, thus, they've had this issue sine day one and done nothing about it.
Of course, some people may not mind stuttering, but I know personally that I would find it absolutely unacceptable. 24p isn't exactly fluid to begin with without this making it even worse!
Damn it what should I do then? Sell it again? The Dvico 5100 has the same problem and it will never be fixed on this 5100 I'm certain of it :(
So what about this 3.0 firmware, do you think it takes some time before it will be released? Will it be this year? Damn it, why not support this 23,976FPS shit :(
Does the Dvico N1 support it now? The 2.0.5 firmware says so but I don't believe them!

Well, you said you weren't too bothered by it in your first post, so don't let me convince you otherwise. Different people are bothered by different things. For me personally, stuttering does my head in! That's the reason I changed from using a computer to play my media on my TV to a Popcorn Hour C200 which has perfect auto-switching and plays everything completely fluently (including 23,976, 24, 25, 29,97 and 30 FPS) something I couldn't get working on my computer.
Anyway, like you say, this is probably a Realtek issue rather than a Xtreamer issue per se, but I have read that Divco has had working auto-switching for a while now. Maybe worth looking into if you're determined to get something Realtek based over Sigma? It's a shame they haven't been able to fix this though, because it's the one thing what's stopping me from getting a cheap secondary player for my bedroom or whatever.
It still puzzles me that this huge bug gets so little attention though :???:
Well I just tested a friends Dvico N1 with the new firmware and the issue has been fixed there! Can't find any stuttering anymore and it recognizes the 23,976FPS just fine!
And the Dvico N1 (also the 6600) has a REALTEK CHIP!!! So come on, it has to be fixed with that Xtreamer! Damn it...
They simply don't care any more for past models....
they have new models now to promote.......
