Btw, topic moved away from realtek forums

Absolutely! Boy, if they can make fly what they're touting, we may finally have a true successor to the 6500!

Some info from distributor but not finalise:
1. USB3.0 host
2. HDMI V1.4, support 3D movie
3. Support wireless keyboard for surfnet
Target Nov. sample out first and Dec mass production and most probably distribute early next year.

To all of the items - bullshit.
Guys, please tell me where you get this delirium information? Why you have merged this here? What for?
The Sigma 8656 will support 3D graphics but NOT 3D movies! Do not hang the noodles on the ears!

At this point, it's all rumor, and if you re-read carefully, even SiaoNiu pointed out "not finalise". Let's wait and see what DViCo actually brings to the table before we bow down at their alter or cast stones.

Think you wanna check your facts Neverhood :-P stops you looking like a dumbass, Sigma 8656 supports 3D graphics AND generic side-by-side and top-bottom output, RealD (side-by-side output), Sensio (side-by-side output) 3D video formats..... but it doesnt support HDMI 1.4, its integrated with 1.3a.

I can tell you this is true because I already knew about this from DViCO.

1. They will be going back to Sigma for their future model.

2. They will be developing TViX with Googles Android OS which as we know is open source and apps and features can be community developed. This in theory should allow for faster maturity of the product as anyone can contribute to the development, not just DViCO.

Is it just me, or does calling it the first "Over the Top (OTT)" media player make this release seem like a joke? Hehe... Any thoughts on what the intended meaning of such a term is?

Just a little search on Google gives a lot of hits, but in summary it stands for:

Over-the-top (OTT) refers to the delivery of Internet-based multimedia content to the TV over a broadband connection. Content producers, service providers, device manufacturers, alike, are all seeking to create a new OTT video distribution channel for on-demand, Internet-based digital entertainment.

Hmmm, what an odd choice of terminology then :) Seems like something along the lines of On-Demand-Distribution (ODD) would be much more suited to the task... To me, Over-the-Top does not connote anything remotely along those lines. :|

3dbd will not be available. Notice that the os will likely be locked and only an API will be available for developers so we may still not be able improve on the way the player works and only have access to extra applications developed. It sure is interesting but hen again, Android running on sigma platform which is not as mature as they say, may have it's issues in speed and performance just like the regular players that will be based on the sigma new line chipsets.

We get more application and games loaded onto the players but do we get better media abilities beyond video which will remain the main reason we buy these players? If for the love of apps and android, there are other products and cheaper ones to acquire... We have been talking to several brands on android and media players and generally the trend will go to portable units with android or android being loaded on the side just like the HDX Bone does (DviCo is not first to include Android but may be the first making Android the major OS on their system).

I am pretty sure it comes with it's own set of challenges and I do not immediately see the major benefit of it against regular media players but I let myself be surprised about what Dvico can do with it...

Neverhood
19-10-10, 11:07
Yeah, i also in a course of that that the Dvico is in a go back to Sigma.

chilidog_uk
You think i`m dumbass looking? Seems to me no , adding such kind of foolish information - this is the real dumbass. What i really meant is HDMI 1.4 and USB 3.0.

Regarding this itching 3D: the phrase was "HDMI V1.4, support 3D movie" have a look, in one line. This is the the main thing which makes me smile. Why create such a gossip? Yes it (8656) will support the generic 3D video but no real 3D video (BD 3D i mean). Thats why i was so rude.

Neverhood.

Does tvix working on android based sigma chipset player mean that there will be no further development of their existing realtek based players?

Of course not. They are still developing existing models.

I should replace my 6500 at the same time too. According to the sigma design component datasheet, the ethernet interface should be gigabit. So it should be much faster than the 6500 which is megabit (and a slow one BTW)

If it does not support 3D movies (HDMI High Speed, also known as 1.4) or 'out of the box' DTS/Dolby HD (lossless and the like) audio and also gigabit ethernet port then why even bother releasing this ?

If they want to get back into the market in a big way then offer what people want (okay the 3D to me is a 'wank' feature)

I'm happy with my 6600 (except for only 4 network shares and the tvixie artwork has to be in 'movie' or 'video' folders)

I can also live without the internet on my media player (others can't) and apps ? really ?

Well I'll wait till the next company offers a device with high speed HDMI and all the lossless audio in one :D

What do you think you're gaining with HDMI High Speed if you don't care about 3D? I don't think it will take much to get to 3D movies, but the other feature of HDMI 1.4, the network connection is never going to be available...not that it adds anything.

Edit: Ooop, I guess 3D movies are already in the specs.

Well. I was quite happy with my original 6500 and now with the 6600 and the N1 in the bedroom. Since I do like Android operating systems, it will be an interesting combo to have it incorporated in to a media player.

I don't think anybody is waiting for the full Android experience from this unit, since that is not the intention. There is always room for improvement on the firmware side of these players. Unfortunately that seems to be the nature of the business.

I am willing to give it a try.

I have one and I'm not sure what you are talking about with the cover art, works fine for me. As for the "still no new firmware" comment, I'm not sure what you mean, but the firmware has been coming steady since the samples were sent out. There has not been any new firmware in the last few weeks, but I suspect they are polishing it up in time for the next production release.

But I do agree, if you want it to perform as the current TViX unit, you should wait until the firmware is more developed.
