I have bought DUNE with the internal HDD installed. The HDD was given a very long and strange name containing several underscores "_" which is causing problems on yaDIS.
Question: Is there a way to change the name of the internal HDD without having to format it? It is full of movies and don't want to lose them
Thanks in adance :)

Yes, add a line to the root directory's dune_folder.txt (or create that file):
storage_name=HDD
Or whatever name you want to give it. You can also use storage_caption which is used for GUI display only.
This is documented in Dune's dune_folder.txt documentation (http://dune-hd.com/firmware/misc/dune_folder_howto.txt) (which is very outdated).
After updating this file, you may have to browse to the drive on the GUI before it picks up the new name.

While I know this has been convered a few times, it never seems to be very specific. Can someone answer some basic questions on this for me?
1. I don't see a dune_folder.txt file. I've browsed via Windows XP and FTP to the internal (and external) attached hard drives on the Dune at the root directory and don't see it. Is it correct that this file may not exist at all?
2. If this file doesn't exist, I just need to create a file, call it dune_folder.txt, and put in the correct information and load it to the root directory of every drive that I want to rename?
3. Can I rename a drive after it already has files in it without compromising those files?
4. The file I need to create should look similar to the attached one and reads something like this:
storage_name = MyUniqueStorageName
http://www.avintegrated.com/dune_folder.txt
Is that correct?
5. Since I don't want to change ANYTHING else about the Dune file system, can I just load a dune_folder.txt file which says:
storage_caption = MyUniqueDriveName
?
The Dune documentation continues to be extremely technical and doesn't help people that are less than intimate with their computers. The lack of an internal ability to just change a name is just another GUI shortcoming for this product that has a lot of plusses otherwise.
TIA to those who have done this and are more familiar than I am.
It sounds to me like your understanding is 100% accurate. Just to be clear I'll answer each of your questions.

Correct.

Yes. You can create the file in Windows Notepad or equivalent. Though you don't want to copy the exact same dune_folder.txt to multiple drives because then they would all have the same name. Each drive should have a unique dune_folder.txt file containing a unique name for that drive.
3. Can I rename a drive after it already has files in it without compromising those files?
Yes. It will not affect anything except the name of the drive as it is presented by the Dune.
4. The file I need to create should look similar to the attached one and reads something like this:
Is that correct?
Yes although you only want one line (storage_caption) and not all that other jazz.
5. Since I don't want to change ANYTHING else about the Dune file system, can I just load a dune_folder.txt file which says:
storage_caption = MyDriveName
?
[spelling of "storage" corrected above]
Yes, exactly. That will change the name of the drive as displayed on the Dune home screen.
If you also want to change the name as it appears in Windows network browser (and FTP directory name), you should use storage_name instead.

I will give it a try tonite and see how it goes. It does seem very straightforward and I will post back to see if it actually is as it seems. My goal is more for the networking name as I am going straight from my discs to the folders and have to configure Zappiti accordingly.
So it'll be:
storage_name = MyUniqueStorageName
One unique name for each drive I have hanging off the Dune.
Should it really be both if I want the local and the network name to be the same?
storage_name = MyUniqueStorageName
storage_caption = MyUniqueStorageName
storage_name = MyUniqueStorageName
storage_caption = MyUniqueStorageName
Setting storage_name will take care of everything. You only need to set both if you want a different name on the GUI vs the network.

Scott - A ton of thanks for helping to clarify some items which had been bugging me for a bit and turned out to be one of the easiest things I've done with the Dune. Obviously, this would all be easier if the Dune did automatically create a file which could be edited via Explorer and was there to begin with, or if they had a way to change the name in the menu settings, but this worked out fine.
One final note: It did NOT recognize the new names when I loaded the .txt files and browsed to the drives. I performed a HARD REBOOT of the Dune and it immediately came up with the new names.
Hopefully this will help others who have been wary about the name change and how it is performed exactly. I have updated the linked .txt file so that it reflects the exact file that needs to be loaded to the root directory and hopefully if anyone is confused at all about this they will ask follow up questions.
Thanks again!
I have one somehow related question. I have a HDD that was previous in PCH player. There is 3 partiotins on it. Is there any way to hide 2 partitions that I don't need?

Why not repartition it to one big partition if you don't need the other two anymore? (You will lose all data on the drive, though.)
Or use fdisk or the like to remove those unused partitions. But this risks data loss if you make a mistake or don't know what you're doing.
I don't think there's any other way to hide them. (I tried a storage_name beginning with a period; didn't work.)
Thanks Scott,
I know how to do it with some partition software, but I don't want risk it. The drive is full with valuable information.

Help mates,
as I access my Dune HD Base 3.0 (latest firmware) I get this ridiciously long name:
DuneHDD_d0025326_c965_41a1_b133_a9c109enumbersnumb ersblabla...
I made a txt file and tried sending it through flashfxp to the Dune root but no go (Transfer Failed!)
I then tried putting the Dune_folder.txt in the root of the "DuneHDD_d0025326_c9etc" folder, it transfers but still the silly long lettersnunderscore name...
What am I doing wrong?

You can't write into the root of the Dune share, only into subdirectories. There should be one per attached drive (excluding system storage).
You want to put the dune_folder.txt in the DuneHDD_d00* folder. You might need to reboot the Dune afterward. Also make sure the filename is all lowercase dune_folder.txt.

Thanks Scott!!!
You saved my evening, it was my big D! After I used lower casing dune_folder.txt it changed name!
Now I will try again to make absolute path and see if I will get rid of the "Error cannot connect to URL" message.
Thanks again mate!!!
