can i use any aai file as background or does it need to be png?jpg?

what background do you mean? yaDIS background? Fanart of a movie?

Salut,

as .AAI is a Dune specific file-format, I do not think there is a limitation from the Dune (optimized to reduce loading time).
I do not know for yaDIS, but just give it a try (you have to change the XML of the template), or you will have to wait until somebody has tested it or Fred-L will confirm.

If it is not working there is a toolkit which includes a small application to convert AAI to JPG and JPG/PNG to AAI (Sticky on HDI Artwork thread).
