HDI came true on releasing it's newest firmware announced last week. With this release, the "silence" surrounding new updates has been broken and consumers can look forward to using a more stable and more advanced player. The change list is long and impressive. Major expectations of this firmware include enhancements for music, DVB-T support, likely protection against copying the firmware and one of the items I personally have been looking forward to, a DVD playback fix. This was considered as a major issue considering all players, even the new ones, suffered from this "glitch". Following is the official HDI post concerning the firmware update.
HDI Dune has released a firmware update which brings a lot of improvements and new functions to all models of Dune media players. The firmware update has version number 110127_2105_beta and beta status.
As always, this firmware update is provided for all generations of Dune media players, including both all new models and all outdated/discontinued models (14 different models based on 3 different platforms: Sigma Designs 863x, 864x, and 865x):
- Dune HD Ultra
- Dune HD Mini
- Dune BD Prime
- Dune HD Center
- Dune HD Base
- Dune HD Base 2.0
- Dune BD Prime 3.0
- Dune HD Base 3.0
- Dune HD Max
- Dune HD Smart H1
- Dune HD Smart D1
- Dune HD Smart B1
- Dune HD Duo
- Dune HD Lite 53D
The new firmware version includes ability to play background music during photo viewing, ability to launch and control music playback w/o using TV (using the front panel display), support for more formats of lossless compressed audio files (ALAC and WavPack), clock on front panel display in
standby, new autoframerate modes (24/50 and 24/60), browser of available WiFi networks, various SMB server settings (including the ability to assign custom server name and workgroup name), various conveniency and usability improvements, and many other new functions and improvements.
For Dune models based on the Sigma Designs 864x and 865x platforms, the new firmware version also includes IP Control support (enabling abilities to control the player from iPhone/iPad and other network devices), various improvements in DVB-T functionality, PPPoE support, and some other new
features.
The new firmware version still has beta status, because it includes a lot of changes and new functions. It also includes a lot of fixes for various issues reported for the previous firmware versions. According to the results of the preliminary testing, HDI Dune hopes that the new firmware version is in overall the best one ever released for Dune players. Based on this beta version and users' feedback, it is planned to fix any new issues discovered in this version (if any) and release a new stable firmware version as soon as possible.
The firmware update can be downloaded and installed via either the built-in online firmware upgrade function of Dune media players, or using the official Dune firmware web site: http://dune-hd.com/firmware

some cases with some equipment. (864x)
- Bugfix: Specific AVI files with AAC audio could not be played
correctly. (864x/865x)
* Added support to play background music during photo viewing.
- Instruction: just launch a playlist consisting of both photos and
audio files, e.g.:
- Press PLAY on a folder containing photos and audio files.
- Put .M3U playlist file with links (paths) to audio files into the
folder with photos, press PLAY on this folder.
- Press SELECT to manually mark photos / audio files (or folders with
photos / audio files), and press PLAY. (Note: marking files works
only within single parent folder.)
- The following RC buttons are available for controlling background
audio playback in photo viewer:
- MUTE, V+/V-: mute and volume control.
- PAUSE/PLAY: pause/resume audio.
- NEXT/PREV: go to next/previous audio file.
- REW/FWD: the same as NEXT/PREV.
- NOTE: To navigate and pause/resume the photo slide show itself,
LEFT/RIGHT/ENTER RC buttons can be used.
- Notes:
- Limitations: WMAPro audio file format is not supported for this
feature; all other audio file formats should work (including MP3,
FLAC, OGG, APE, WAV, WMA, etc).
- All audio files are played sequentially (in the original order) in a
loop.
- Audio files using the same or compatible audio codec are played in
gapless mode.
* Other photo viewer improvements.
- ENTER RC button in photo viewer allows to pause/resume the slide show
(and LEFT/RIGHT, as before, allow to go to next/previous photo).
- Bugfix: specific huge panorama photos were handled wrongly in photo
viewer.
- Bugfix: photo viewer could crash in specific rare cases.
* Added support to play music w/o using TV, using the front panel display.
- The name of the currently selected item of the file browser (e.g.
file/folder) is shown on the display.
- When playback of a file/audiotrack starts, its title is shown on the
display for a few seconds.
- The currently selected playlist item (when playlist browser is
activated by pressing POP UP MENU RC button during playback) is shown
on the display.
- Long names/titles are scrolled through the display.
- The new features can be disabled via settings in "Setup /
Miscellaneous / Built-in Display".
* Added support for ALAC (Apple Lossless) audio files.
* Added support for WavPack lossless audio files.
* Added support for MMS audio/video streaming protocol. (864x/865x)
- Useful for MMS-based Internet Radio and Internet Video resources.
- Both playback and recording of MMS streams is supported.
- Usage: launch playback of MMS URL ("mms://...") via .M3U playlist file
or in any other way supported by Dune.
* Added 24/50 and 24/60 autoframerate modes.
* Added "dynamic range control" support.
- Added "Setup / Audio / Dynamic Range Control" setting, with possible
values "Off", "Medium", "High", "Auto". Allows to specify the desired
DRC behavior for audio tracks supporting DRC.
* Volume control improvements.
- New graphical volume indicator during file and DVD playback, with a
special warning (red color) about possible overload (volume level more
than 0dB).
- Added a new setting "Audio / Volume control" with the following
possible values:
- "Off". Volume control is completely disabled. The volume level is
fixed at 100% (0dB) and the player does not perform any
modifications of the digital audio signal.
- "Best quality". The default setting. The user is allowed to control
the volume in the safe range till 0dB (ensuring no audio
distortions on all audio content). When needed for specific files,
it is also possible to temporarily overcome the 0dB limit by
pressing and holding "V+" RC button for several seconds (the
increase volume level takes effect only for the current playback
session and is automatically reset to 0dB when the playback session
finishes).
- "Allow overload". The setting corresponding to the behavior taking
place in previous firmware versions. The user is allowed to set the
volume to values greater than 0dB. Depending on played content,
this may lead to severe audio distortions and thus is not
recommended.
- Added a new setting "Audio / Volume indication" with the following
possible values:
- "Percents". The default setting. The volume level is shown as
[0..100%] (corresponding to [-48..0dB] range). When the volume
level is set to 100%, the player does not perform any modifications
of the digital audio signal. Overloaded volume level is shown as
(100..150%] (corresponding to (0..+24dB] range).
- "Decibels". The setting corresponding to the behavior taking place
in previous firmware versions. The volume level is shown in
decibels.
- Volume control OSD for background audio during photo viewing is
implemented in the same way as for regular file playback.
- NOTE: As in previous firmware versions, the player can apply volume
control only to PCM audio signal (i.e. when playing PCM audio tracks
or audio tracks which are decoded by the player itself); when using
"bitstream" audio output mode and playing audio tracks supporting
bitstream output, the volume control does not take any affect. When
A/V receiver is used, it is recommended to control the volume using
the A/V receiver.
* Zoom improvements.
- Added a new zoom preset for file playback: "full fill screen" --
similar to "fill screen" but with filling the entire screen both
vertically and horizontally.
- Bugfix: remembering zoom settings could work wrongly in some cases.
* Blu-ray INFO OSD improvements.
- Added showing of the total playback time in INFO OSD during Blu-ray
playback.
- Added showing the information about secondary video and secondary
audio tracks in INFO OSD during Blu-ray playback; some other related
changes/improvements.
* Other OSD improvements.
- When performing time navigation using LEFT/RIGHT/UP/DOWN/P+/P- RC
buttons (in file/DVD playback mode), the OSD does not only show the
selected playback position, but also shows the offset from the current
playback position.
- Certain notification OSD elements, such as volume control and certain
information messages can now be quickly hidden by pressing any
non-relevant RC buttons (no need to wait for autohide timeout).
* Improved handling of RC buttons during playback.
- CLEAR RC button allows to restore the default vertical position of
subtitles in subtitles setup mode.
- PLAY RC button is not used anymore for starting/stopping recordings;
only REC RC button should be used for this. (For models with the new
RC with REC button.)
* Improved handling of RC buttons in file browser.
- PREV and NEXT RC buttons are handled as P+/P- in file browser (allow
to switch to next/previous page in large directory listings) (the
feature requested by some users of universal remotes).
- Added a possibility to quickly toggle interface language: AUDIO RC
button on the main screen shows a dialog for choosing the language.
* Improved handling of front panel buttons in file browser.
- PREV and NEXT front panel buttons now allow to navigate both when icon
view is used (handled as LEFT and RIGHT, with ability to go from one
row to another) and when list view is used (handled as UP and DOWN).
* Added support for Hebrew (Right-to-Left) filenames.
* Added clock on front panel display in standby.
- Clock is shown automatically when time is synchronized (i.e. time
synchronization option is enabled and Internet connection is working,
or a time server in the local network is used); when time is not
synchronized, clock is not shown.
- NOTE: Time synchronization is automatically enabled after upgrade to
this firmware version. If not needed/desired, it can be disabled via
"Setup / Miscellaneous / Time synchronization".
- Clock is shown in "software standby" mode only.
- Clock showing can be disabled via "Setup / Miscellaneous / Built-in
Display / Show time on display".
* Added new UI customization possibilities (for "dune_folder.txt"
applications).
- Added dune_folder.txt feature: possibility to specify the default
sorting settings for the folder. Syntax:
- sort_field = name|size|atime|mtime|unsorted
- sort_dir = asc|desc
- Added dune_folder.txt feature: paths in the definition of virtual
items can be relative paths.
- Image/icon files can now have also special extensions .djpg, .dbmp,
.dpng (helpful e.g. to allow Movie Collections PC applications to
prevent indexing of the files by OS for better performance).
- Added a possibility to load icons shown in the right panel of the
"extended list view" asynchronously. When this feature is enabled,
navigation in such folders becomes much faster.
- Syntax:
- async_icon_loading = yes
- Added "icon_archive" feature, allowing to download a collection of
icons/images from an HTTP server once when entering certain folder,
and cache it in the player (in System Storage), that allows to
significantly improve the performance.
- Syntax:
- icon_archive.{n}.name = {name}
- icon_archive.{n}.url = {HTTP-URL-to-TGZ-archive}
- icon_path = icon_archive://{name}/{file-path-in-archive}
- When a new version of the icon archive is deployed on the HTTP
server, a modified URL should be used for it, then the player will
automatically reload the icon archive next time when the user opens
the folder.
* Added new possibilities for authors of FlashLite applications. (864x)
- Added ability for FlashLite application to store persistent data in
the flash memory of the player ("persistent SharedObjects").
- Added support for showing specific text message on the front panel
display (for player models having front panel display) on startup of
FlashLite application.
- More information: http://dune-hd.com/support/flash
* Added IP Control possibilities (control the player from iPhone etc).
(864x/865x)
- A simple HTTP protocol allows to control the player from network
(start/stop playback of the given media resources, control the
playback, check current player status, emulate RC button presses,
etc).
- Applications for various devices can be created based on this IP
Control procotol. Several such applications are already announced /
provided (e.g.: applications for iPhone/iPad, integration with
Control4 smart home systems).
- More information: http://dune-hd.com/support/ip_control

scanning for the channels (speeds up the scanning process and also may
improve the results of the scanning). The location can also be
specified in Setup / Applications / DVB-T.
- Added showing of progress information during scanning and a
possibility to stop the scan process.
- Added a possibility to launch the scan also from the settings page
(Setup / Applications / DVB-T).
* Torrent client improvements.
- Maximum number of torrent client peers is set to 50 by default (to
prevent problems taking place in some cases, as reported by some
users).
- More correct reporting of errors by torrent client in some cases.
- Bugfix: torrent client did not support working with partition-less
storage devices.
- Bugfix: automatic startup of torrent client on boot could not work in
some cases.
* Network setup improvements.
- Added a new network configuration mode: "Auto (DHCP), manual DNS",
allowing to use DHCP for automatic configuration of basic network
settings, but specify DNS settings manually (as needed for some
Internet providers).
- Improved indication when the player is waiting for IP address.
* WiFi setup improvements.
- Added an ability to choose WiFi network from the list.
- Setup / Network / (WiFi) Settings -> Scan for networks...
- Added autodetection of the best possible WiFi security method when
choosing WiFi network from the list.
- WiFi password is shown as normal text to make it easier to
enter/validate it.
* Added PPPoE support (864x/865x).
- Added PPPoE network connection kind (i.e.: Dune connected via Ethernet
cable directly to an Internet provider which uses PPPoE connection,
with login/password-based authorization).
* Added SMB server settings (Setup / Applications / SMB Server).
- Server name.
- Workgroup name.
- Server description.
- Ability to disable SMB server.
* Time zone setup improvements.
- Time zone configuration (Setup / General / Time zone) is made more
convenient: for each listed time zone, the current time taking place
according to this time zone is shown.
* Setup usability improvements.
- When the user tries to exit "Video" or "Network" setup screen with
unsaved changes, a warning dialog is shown. The user is asked to
either apply the changes, discard the chances, of cancel the action.
- When selecting WiFi network connection type, the WiFI settings dialog
is shown automatically.
- When selecting PPPoE network connection type, the PPPoE settings
dialog is shown automatically.
- The setting "Analog audio output mode" is renamed to "Audio decoding
mode" (since it affects both analog audio outputs and HDMI audio
output). (Ultra/Mini/Lite 53D)
- The setting "Maximum S/PDIF sample rate" is renamed to "Maximum
digital outputs sample rate" (since it affects both S/PDIF and HDMI
audio outputs). (Lite 53D)
* Added built-in "Reset Settings" function.
- No more need to use a DSF file for this.
- Usage: "Setup / General / Reset Settings".
- Resets all player settings to default values and also clears all other
user-related data stored by the player in main flash memory (such as:
file/DVD bookmarks, configuration of network folders, etc).
- Also clears Blu-ray cache (also known as Blu-ray local storage) in
System Storage (when System Storage is attached).
- Also clears all user-related data stored by the player in System
Storage (including main screen shortcuts and cached icon archive
data). NOTE: the content of Internet Radio and IPTV folders is not
cleared automatically (since these folders may contain files important
for the user); if needed, these folders can be cleared manually.
- Also clears all data in Flash Memory Storage.
* Added built-in functions for management of System Storage.
- New Setup page "Miscellaneous / System Storage" provides the following
functions:
- "Initialize System Storage": allows to initialize the system
storage if it is not configured yet. Two possibilities are
provided: create the system storage on an empty storage device (USB
flash drive, SD card, an already existing HDD partition), or
partition an empty HDD into system storage and user data
partitions. Usage instructions:
- The system lists all found empty 1GB+ storages.
- Select the desired storage.
- If the selected storage's capacity is less than 100GB, the
entire storage is initialized as the system storage.
- Otherwise, if the selected storage is 100GB+ storage device, it
is partitioned into two partitions, the first partition is
initialized as the system storage, and the second partition is
kept unformatted (to format it, select it in the file browser
and press ENTER).
- "Deinitialize System Storage": allows to deinitialize the system
storage if it is already configured.
- "Clear System Storage": deletes all data stored on the system
storage. This, in particular, includes Blu-ray cache, main screen
shortcuts, content of Internet Radio and IPTV folders.
- "Clear Blu-ray Cache": clears Blu-ray cache (also known as "Blu-ray
local storage").
* Added support for "Flash Memory Storage" - an area of main flash
memory that can be used to store data instead of System Storage in some
cases. (864x/865x)
- Flash Memory Storage currently can be used to store the following
data:
- Data cache for dune_folder.txt applications utilizing
"icon_archive" function (graphics packages downloaded from
Internet).
- Data cache for KartinaTV application (graphics and some other
information downloaded from Internet).
- For all other kinds of data that can be stored in System Storage,
Flash Memory Storage can not be used, and System Storage is still
required. This includes, in particular: Blu-ray cache, main screen
shortcuts, content of Internet Radio and IPTV folders.
- In future, it is planned to allow to use Flash Memory Storage for more
player functions.
- The purpose of Flash Memory Storage is that it makes it easy to use
the corresponding player functions for the users not having System
Storage attached. When System Storage is available, Flash Memory
Storare is not used (System Storage is used instead).
- Flash Memory Storage availability and capacity depends on a particular
Dune model.
- Dune HD Max, Dune HD Duo: Flash Memory Storage is always available
and its capacity is ~100MB (due to total 256MB of main flash memory
in these models).
- Dune HD Base 3.0, Dune BD Prime 3.0, Dune HD Smart D1/H1/B1: Flash
Memory Storage can be enabled/disabled (disabled by default) and
its capacity is ~16MB. Enabling Flash Memory Storage is performed
automatically when it is needed for the first time, or can be
performed manually via Setup. When Flash Memory Storage is enabled,
some optional firmware components (asian fonts) are removed from
the flash memory. When firmware is reinstalled/updated, Flash
Memory Storage becomes disabled again and these optional firmware
components are restored automatically (until Flash Memory Storage
is required again by some application). If these optional firmware
components are required, Flash Memory Storage can not be used
(System Storage should be used instead).
- Dune HD Lite 53D: Flash Memory Storage is always available and its
capacity is ~16MB.
- Setup section "Miscellaneous / System Storage" allows to see the
current status of Flash Memory Storage and provides the following
functions:
- "Enable Flash Memory Storage": allows to enable Flash Memory
Storage (only for Dune models where Flash Memory Storage option,
other Dune models have Flash Memory Storage always enabled).
- "Clear Flash Memory Storage": deletes all data from Flash Memory
Storage.
* Integrated "KartinaTV" Internet TV service. (864x/865x)
- More information: http://dune-hd.com/support/kartina_tv
* Integrated "IVI.ru" Internet Video service. (864x)
- More information: http://dune-hd.com/support/ivi_ru
* Various other improvements.
- Changed indication of "AC3" and "EAC3" audio tracks to "Dolby Digital"
and "Dolby Digital Plus" (as required by Dolby).
- Bugfix: pressing POP UP MENU on main screen shortcuts pointing to a
non-accessible network resource could cause a lockup for several
minutes.
- The function of quick video mode choosing now provides feedback using
the LED on the front panel of the player:
- When the function is activated: the LED blinks once.
- When the user cancels the function: the LED blinks once.
- When a new video mode is chosen: the LED blinks 2 times.
- When the user confirms the new video mode: the LED blinks 3 times.
- The function of checking EXT2 filesystem now correctly reports an
error when the user tries to use it on an HDD with capacity exceeding
the maximum supported limit.
- Some interface languages added/updated.
- Some other improvements/fixes.
- Other minor fixes.
Is there a fix for the MKV video/audio sync issue? I don't see it listed in the bugfix..
Been waiting for this patiently, anxious to test this new version.
Hoping it's smoother and more stable than test/dev versions.
Tks for the update!
No change regarding the audio sync problem. Audio sync correction setting is still reset to 0 sec when playback is resumed after stopping. Allowing user to set a default sync correction value in the setup menu would be a fine quick fix before a complete fix is available.
I hope this long time bug is fixed sooner rather later since it's pretty much the only bug remaining in my Prime 3.0.
Oh, and I can't get the front display clock to work on my unit, not on this beta or the previous test fw. Do I need some specific settings in the Time synchronization menu? edit: nevermind, found the problem.
Gapless audio ? I want to see that !
lets give it a try, ill test the new FW when im back at home..
hmmm, I'm unable to get the tv enhancements (epg, timers, channel lists etc) to work......!!!! or will these enhancments come in the beta 120401_666_beta!
Thanks for the new IVI.ru and Kartina.TV options - really useful in the UK! - just need to learn Russian now! Any plans for an English version?
Thanks for adding the System Storage functions via the setup menu. This must have taken about 30mins to implement.
Really Dune is this the best you can come up with in 6months. Most of the changes have been available in previous test firmware since early Dec 2010. What have you been doing - designing more new players ?
Bug fixes 7/10
Enhancments 0/10
What about the loud pop through the speakers when using the Analogue outputs?
What about the loud pop through the speakers when using the Analogue outputs?
Can´t be fixed in Base 3.0 and Prime 3.0, bad hardware construction if I´m not wrong.
What about the loud pop through the speakers when using the Analogue outputs?
That is hardware-related.
OH NOOOO "IP Control possibilities (control the player from iPhone etc)" feature is not available for 2.0 Dune systems?
Why??? Why???
It is caused by a limitation of the Sigma processor??
If not, why this function is not included in the new firmware?
To induce customers to spend other money and purchase new systems?
I purchased my Dune Base 2.0 one year ago. I cannot replace my player every year!!
This feature was the unique very new upgrade for us. All other new features are almost irrelevant.
I'm very disappointed with this choice!
Dear HDI, your systems damage the Hard Disks, because they run continuously even when not needed!!! In fact, if I access via LAN to HDDs, they never switch off. The only way is to switch on and off the system by the Remote Control. In this way the LAN access to disk, in most cases, is not so usefull...
I was hoping that this could be solved by using the IP Remote Control, but for systems 2.0, this is not available (please explain why ...).
So, since the new IP control is not available for V2.0 systems, we think that HDI should introduce for us a feature that allows the hybernation (spin-stop) of the internal HDD (and e-Sata) after a programmable unusing time.
HDI, please introduce this feature!
any feedback on gapless audio?

HDI couldn't care less about this annoying issue
Instead of introducing new functions they should focus on fixing laggard issues :!:
Why Mr HDI_fw_dev has never deigned to answer us about this ? :|
I think this issue will never be fixed. I'm quite sure they know it's a chip defect but business counts more than anything else :x
Quoting myself from the "Audio out of sync" thread (http://www.mpcclub.com/forum/showthread.php?p=183132#post183132):
No this bug is not fixed in the last non-public beta firmwares. This issue is surely a bug from Sigma Design (chip or SDK).
PCH have exactly the same issue. Syabas released a quick hack which improve the lipsync for MKV playback (an audio delay is introduce in MKV playback) but it's only a hack.
We have been waiting for a fix more than a year !

I own a Base 3.0 player but wouldn't know how to solve that problem you described (I am having the very same issue with my player, HDD never enters hibernation mode) using this new IP control feature. Any hint on where to start ?
Anyway, I fully second your opinion, an option to set a spin-down time for the internal/external HDD is certainly required.

Look on the HDI Dune website and it's explained there.
Ontopic:
Looking forward to the comming apps which can now be designed with the implementation of Flash Lite.
Gapless audio :D finally

IP Remote not allows directly the HDD Hybernation. But can replace the phisical RC command "Switch ON -> Switch OFF", avoiding to stand up, to come in the Dune player room, to execute RC command and to go back in my PC room...
However, we think that a timed hybernation feature would be usefull in any case!
Is by long time that we ask this feature...
Can´t be fixed in Base 3.0 and Prime 3.0, bad hardware construction if I´m not wrong.
Meaning it doesn't have some sort of delay relay to block out this initial surge(=bad engineering)?

Spin down option is great for our hears (and energy consumption) but is NOT some magic life prolonging option.
In fact some hard disk do not easily sustain spin up/down and it is often advisable to let the HD ON rather than shut it down.

Just read the announcement in the first post of this thread thoroughly, there's a link to the IP control documentation from HDI. I could post it again here - but I like educating so much
Anyone know how to use IP control yet?
It seems that those people do!!!: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dune-remote/id408868276?mt=8 ;)
Does this firmware have the bug where stopping an MKV (ISO's are fine) with PGS subtitles causes the player to error out and restart? Basically, rip any Blu-ray title to MKV with a subtitle. Start playback and turn on the subtitle. Hit stop, the player will report ERROR-ERROR and then RESTART.
This bug was introduced with the 101029_2349 IP Control firmware.
Does this firmware fix the bug that prevents the last 10 seconds of a DVD from being played (or last 4-5 seconds of a Blu-ray)? Rip any DVD to movie-only (no menus) ISO or folder structure. On a PC, make note of the correct run time. Play on the Dune. With about 10 seconds left before the end, the Dune will just suddenly start playback at the beginning. This means playback will loop forever and never return to the main menu like it would with a MKV or other file. Also, on titles (mainly TV shows) that have a little bonus scene after the credits, this scene can get cut-off early.
This bug has been around since at least 100706_1032.
I guess I need to update to try them, I just hate to install and then revert back on firmware. I figure one day it will have a problem and hose my player.

I think most modern hard drives support this function, but just place this Feature as programmable option and and everyone would be happy...(also who cannot switch off its Dune via IP Remote Control...)
There are mentions of PGS subtitle improvements in the change list. I would recommend those who have issues to test the firmware (you can always go back) and report if it solved or not (opposed to asking we would have much more results in smaller time frame to start hassle HDI about further improvements) :-)
Because of the new firmware I started testing all the different formats on my player and I noticed that iso-files do not play. When I press enter or play on an iso-file I get "playlist is empty". Anyone else have this issue?
I am not sure this is because of this firmware. I only have a few iso-files and I haven't play any for quite some time, so it might be a setting issue. I went through my settings, but didn't find anything that might help.
Update: I just noticed the 5 dvd iso-files do not play, but the one Blu-ray iso I have works just fine.
Update 2: tried it with the previous beta and I have the same problem. So it is something in my settings, not in the new firmware.
Update 3: Apparently it is something with the iso files. Though I remember they used to work, extracting and recreating them with ImgBurn seem to fix the problem.

Iso files playing perfect here on the new beta firmware!!
one quick remark when "testing" and finding and reporting "bugs":
Make always sure that You can repeat the problem/bug.
For example - whenever some kind of files do not play. Turn off your Dune. Then back on - and try again.
If the problem remains(is repeatable) only then we can determine that there is a problem/bug.
(sry if mistaken, but I got the feeling to say all above when reading this topic)
Thank you for the new firmware!
@dune_fw_developers
What about forced subtitles? Since the release of the Dune Prime 3 I'm hoping for a small firmware update introducing the possibility to show subtitles in mkv files with the tag "forced" as default as well as showing the track name (e.g. normal subtitle, forced subtitle, subtitle for hearing impaired).
Just upgraded my BD Prime 3.0.
The audio dropout between chapters has been resolved! :D
(was basically the only real issue I was facing)
I'm a happy Dune user again, thanks HDI!
If you have an andriod phone you should look for an application called dunecontrol.

No gapless audio here.
Tried mp3, FLAC, Apple lossless, all playing from local drive. Still 2 second gap in between songs... bummer !
Dune prime 3.
Can someone with a Max HD confirm if there is gapless audio or not?
I'm holding my purchase in order to buy one. If they implemented gapless audio I'm buying one.

No, Prime 3.0
Smart D1 here, although the gaps are shorter when compared to former FW, but still there grrrrr
With this new release, using a Prime 3.0 connected to an Edge processor, I get very short video sync losses, maybe every 20 minutes.
Going back to the previous release solved the problem.
Edit: my bad, this might be a loose cable problem.

I have cleared bluray cache local storage and even system storage cache, and still no luck :-(
i got no problem playing BD/HDMV structure folders, but all BD-J tested ones are failing
(I, Robot and 4 Discs from The Pacific series)
This problem is not linked to the firmware, it didnt work already with the September beta. But I thought this new firmware would solve the problem.
[* Includes also all changes from 101201_1626.
Bugfix: some user actions during playback of certain Blu-ray BD-J
discs/images could cause green screen (the problem introduced in
firmware version 100916_2027_beta, because of a new Sigma SDK).]
I am using a USB key as system storage unit, it's a 500 MB one, since i dont use BD-live or other apps, it should be enough? Should I replace it with a bigger key? Does a BD-J need more than 500MB system storage to run?
The M2TS file was taken directly from the "I, Robot" structure BDMV folder, i didnt touch it at all, it was the main M2TS (29GB size)
Thanks again for your answers :-)
With Firmware Update (110127_2105_beta) Dune Prime 3.0 still has the problem with DVD multi-angle... Is this something that has to solve HDI or Sigma?
I had hopes of find it solve in this FW but I supose I have to wait another 4 months (for a new FW that will not solve it, again).
still no browsing through the directory when playing music files:-(
Hi hidalgo,
my Prime was delivered with 2GB as system memory. I am not sure if it helps because my system storage is only filled with around 200MB. But why not try? Everybody should have a small 2GB stick lying around:-)

C'mon, is it really that difficult to implement mkv chapters (which just about every player now supports). Also would like to see support for forced subtitles in mkvs (PCH and Boxee Box are the only two players off the top of my head that supports). Also, add an option to allow a user to boot up the Dune directly into their view/jukebox of choice.

same happens on all 5 BD-J discs I have.

Maybe is because of my English... I know that the issue is old, but what I mean is that we have to wait (4 months or more) for the next Firmware to see if the have fixed (or not, which is what has happend every FW release).

The biggest issue I have with my Dune Base 3.0 is that it scales the output and changes the colorspace. Is it even possible to fix this through firmware? For instance, I want 4:2:2 colorspace from the Dune and then let my DVDO scaler change that to 4:4:4. This is the way my Oppo Bluray player works and there is a difference. I guess we are talking about a "source direct" mode. I have not updated to the new firmware yet but I don't expect it will address this issue since it wasn't listed in the update notes.

Still a BETA. Hey guys! Did we buy a beta-player??? -_-'
Is posible change audio track in tdt (dune stick) in this version? When I select the audio button and check alternative audio the image freeze until I return original track.
what I asked and they have written today; as one of us wrote at previous pages.this playback issue has been continueing since bdp3 manufactured both with the optical drive that had HJBQ, HJ95 and the newest D1N7..
it is obvious that either the optical drives but mostly the sigma chip doesnot allow to play commercial-original dvd or blueray with copy protect. the region code is not a problem. copy protection is a big problem I think..
Hi,
as you can remember, I have uploaded "terminator salvation" to your ftp server. (bobus2k)
Maybe it was 2 months ago.
You have relesed new firmware. I have installed it but unfortunately
I have seen that dune bdp3 still haven't played the film.
dune can play copied films but has alot of difficulty on playing commercial-original dvds..
any dvd player(philips, sony, lg etc) can play that film but dune not. it is disappointing.. is it that much difficult to solve?
we have written at forums, so I am not able to recommend dune with an optical driver..

And what is this technical paper from 1998 supposed to tell us about why the Dune does an unnecessary colorspace conversion?
dropzone7, if you're referring to the 1921x1081 scaling issue, that was fixed in the previous beta.
HDI posted about multi-angle in a russian forum yesterday.

I hope they can also solve the problem about DVD9 recorded discs not playing at all on Dune.
Among the other features needed/missing, would be also good to have an option, like in any other DVD player, to select the DVD/Blu-Ray and if possible Mkv Language (menu+audio), setting it up directly into Dune Setup page.
i.e. for the mkv files, the player plays the 1st audio track even if the default/forced track is another.

Did any changes sins 1998 in handling MPEG-2 and colorspace?

Did any changes sins 1998 in handling MPEG-2 and colorspace?
That paper explains what 4:2:2 is. So what? The issue is that the Dune is outputting 4:4:4 instead of the expected 4:2:2. Is that really necessary? Why does it do that? Does this paper explain why? If it does, please point out where.

I don't know if any of the current consumer hardware players can play these files 4:2:2
Has anybody tried to run a photoslideshow in combination with playing music (which should be possible now)?
I only managed to do this when photos and music are in the same folder.
Unfortunately my photos and mp3's are stored in different folders on a NAS.
Are there any suggestions how to do this?

This is something I have been asking for since I got the base 3.0. Source direct mode would take this player to another level. You can see the deleterious effects of the conversions in a chroma burst pattern or a chroma 1:1 test pattern. The DUNE loses details in the conversions taking place inside the player. This is also how they wind up with wrong color space errors on source material... unnecessary conversions...
If you compare the image from an Oppo BDP to the DUNE the Oppo is superior with real world video.

The problem of not being able to choose the default language for menus, subtitles and audio from DVD and BLU-RAY persists and it seems that they are unable to solve.
Any player has this option cheaper.
Hopefully, the Russians included in any future firmware..
Disappointed with HDI Dune.
Hi,
1)
I am still missing a homogeneous user interface in the Dune.
The dialog is still different bewteen playing DVD and playing Blu-ray. (Fx Search, Info, subtitles shift....)
This is in daily operations confusing. User interface must be aligned so it is undependent of movie sources.
2)
No bookmark on blu-ray, but s working on DVD. I know HDI has announced difficulties in implementing this feature.., but other products do support this feature.
3) .AVI videos generated by Nikon cameras are not supported.

Has anybody tried to run a photoslideshow in combination with playing music (which should be possible now)?
I only managed to do this when photos and music are in the same folder.
Unfortunately my photos and mp3's are stored in different folders on a NAS.
Are there any suggestions how to do this?
Yes, the box can play music during photoslide. But music must also in my setup be placed in the same folder as the photos.

this is not necessary. If you read the post with firmware well it says that you must have the playlist (i.c. a .m3u or .pls file) in the same directory as the photos. I did this and it works well !!!!

What about annoying "your blu-ray player requires an update in order to play this disc"? Today I have tried to play Marmaduke (2010) image and mine Dune HD Base 3.0 (with very latest 110127_2105_beta) shown it!
Now I need to play it as single file without being able to see menu, supplements, nothing!
Do we need newer SDK from Sigma being implemented into HDI products?

Ok, but probably I'm doing something wrong.
When I put a playlist in the photo directory, the system tries to find the path in that same photo folder and responds with "path/file could not be found".
Can you show us an example of a playlist that points to another folder (btw. my folders are located on a NAS and I'm using NFS to connect).
Is there a fix for the MKV video/audio sync issue? I don't see it listed in the bugfix..
I didn't have this problem with my Dunes 1.0.
I have this problem with almost all my mkv's (mainly itune tv episodes remuxed to mkv) on my 3 Dunes 3.0. They are connected to my receivers. I set a -22ms delay on the Dunes.
The only itune mkv's which do work without the -22ms, are the first three seasons of Two and a Half Men.
Some .ts caps do also have problems, but those I can't even sync. When I try that, it only gets worse. So I play those with my htpc.
I play mainly bd's remuxed to .mts instead of full bdmv folders or .iso's. They always play in sync for me. The complete bd's in bdmv folders or .iso format on my hdd's (not many) I have, also didn't have sync problems so far.
I tried a lot with the delay options in my receivers without any luck.
I tested all three Dunes 3.0 on my flatscreens without the receivers and then I don't have sync problems with everything I throw at them.
I think that this problem is some how hardware related, because I used my Dunes 1.0 in the same setups without any problems. I don't have any high hopes that HDI can solve this.
Pity, because I'm very happy sofar with them.
You can have a playlist on a different folder! :)
I've tried now foobar2000 to save to a different folder my mp3 archive (.m3u)
This is something I have been asking for since I got the base 3.0. Source direct mode would take this player to another level. You can see the deleterious effects of the conversions in a chroma burst pattern or a chroma 1:1 test pattern. The DUNE loses details in the conversions taking place inside the player. This is also how they wind up with wrong color space errors on source material... unnecessary conversions...
If you compare the image from an Oppo BDP to the DUNE the Oppo is superior with real world video.

Craig,
Thanks for commenting. You probably understand the difference better than anyone. I will admit that I don't have a firm grasp of the details but my eyes can see the difference and that's enough for me. About a year and half ago Ken Whitcomb came out to calibrate my projector and we toyed around with the Oppo for a long time. Sending 4:2:2 from the Oppo to my VP50pro and letting the scaler do the conversion is the best possible situation for my particular setup. I have tried those burst patterns you are referring to and it clearly shows the error when played through the Dune. I'm enjoying the convenience of a "movie wall" and full BD rips from my server to the Dune but when I really want to see a film in it's glory I have to crank up the Oppo and play the actual disc. I also scraped an Emotiva pre/pro (UMC-1) that I loved because it was doing the same needless conversions.
Damn, thought this firmware would fix it but i guess not.
Stil not able to play .mov files generated from my panasonic camera !!!!!!! Horrible! Even mede8er is able to play the files, but the dune base 3.0 not!

Skank. Just curiuos as I'm thinking of getting one of those cameras. Is it possible to convert the .mov files to some other format which the Dune can play?

Well, i think its possible to convert yes.. but i dont want to do that manually with my existing (+-100) movies :( too much work
the dune should just work, my mediaplayer i had before (mede8er) played it just fine, so why not the dune then?
Just updated to this latest beta on my Dune HD Max & thought I'd check out the new music playback features as I'm happy with the movie playback.
Gapless music playback still has a problem. The delay isn't as long as before but it seems the delay is the time it takes the Dune to access the file. So a small delay when using attached storage but a longer delay when accessing over a network. Either way better but still not gapless so spoils playback of mixed or continuous albums. Maybe the access time could be speeded up to proper gapless by buffering the next track in the playlist in the flash memory or similar?
Playing a slideshow while listening to music does work now but is limited as you can only playback in the same folder. I'm like many who probably has their photos filed in separate folders from their music. What we need is to be able to say start playing a music playlist then be able to navigate to a different folder containing our chosen slideshow.
The front panel display is now vastly more useful. You can see the track titles or folder names & they scroll across so you are able to switch the tv off if you want while playing music & be able so change tracks or albums easily albeit a bit slower as display is only single line.
There's several more options in setup now which is also great as you can never have too many personally customisable options to adjust.
Lots more new things for me to try yet but just a quick post of my findings so far which I hope helps.
Overall I'm really pleased with my HD Max & these updates do improve things to make it a great media player imho, just a few of them need minor tweaks for the stable release I think.
Cheers Dune ;)
Skank. Just curiuos as I'm thinking of getting one of those cameras. Is it possible to convert the .mov files to some other format which the Dune can play?
I've just read this:
The .MOV extension is just a container, Panasonic (like a lot of other manufacturers) encode there videos using the motion JPEG format, unfortunately this isn't and has never been supported by HDI
There are no such plans in the future either..
I guess its a known problem which they dont want to/can fix.
So re-encoding is the only way :(
Still same problem as with previous firmwares:
The beginning (less than a second) of a music is skipped when Dune is connected in hdmi...

Can also confirm that gapless playback of audio is a nono on a Smart D1...
Do they even test their firmware at HDI???

Exactly the same situation here. Fortunately, I don't have that many of them.
I'm seriously considering buying Mede8or as a second media player as it's much cheaper and can play .mov files (I tested it).
My parents will take Mede8or for the very same reason as they don't want to do any conversions (neither do I).
I tested it with WDTV Live and it also plays .mov files.
As there are so many Panasonic cameras out there, I think they are potentially losing quite a bit of market by not supporting it.

Not arguing about HDI qualities, but if your camera really does motion jpegs you'd better recode them to h.264. You will save a lot of space and, provided that you are using -crf=20 or lower, lose no video quality. Motion jpeg is really outdated and way inefficient codec.

Its not only Panasonic on market Sony,Samsung, Nikon, Canon and more-and all have different format-this why its impassible support all of them-guys its not computer and never will be capable like computer.
OK, the MKV lipsync issue is really starting to annoy me. I've put up with this for a long time, and tonight I decided to try hooking up the Dune differently and only managed to discover more issues (ie. outputting 5.1 as 7.1).
Are there any other players on the market with the Dune's file format support, that don't have this issue?

It happens with all players with Sigma Designs SMP864X:
- HDI Dune Base 3.0, Prime 3.0, MAX, Duo....
- PCH-C200, PCH-A210...
The lipsync issue is noticeable in these conditions:
- the player is connected to an A/V amplifier
- the audio is configured in bitstream mode
- the played file is a mkv with AC3 audio track (dolby or dolby truehd)
- the played audio track is the original soundtrack (VO)
- [EDIT] disabling all TV & AMP post-processing (motionflow, sharpness, noise reduction filters...)
Why are we sure the issue is due to the player ?
We have done tests with other players: HDI Dune 1.0, 2.0, med8er, Laptop PC with exact same configuration (bitstream, mkv with AC3 audio track in VO).
=> The lipsync issue is always about -0,22s
=> Syabas admitted that there is a defect and tried to fix it with a hack.
=> HDI has never clearly admitted this issue. On year ago they said us they are working on it. No news since this date.
=> HDI send us beta test firmwares on a private "HD Land" forum via Christophe Cherel (French Reseller) to help them to correct this issue but we never had any change log and the issue has never been fixed. Have they tried ? I don't think so.

This is NOT a perfect world. The lipsync issue is really annoying. If it can't be solved in the core system of DUNE at least everybody would really appreciate the implementation of a workaround: let the dunefolder.txt file support one more tag: audio_delay (or something similar) so that we can configure the affected movies with the delay once forever. HDI added a lot of 'strange' stuff to the dunefolder but they did NOt add this simple but effective item. I do not understand.. it should not be that difficult. One item... before playing the movie you read it.. and you set the delay with taht value (instead of having the upset user do it manually everytime the play starts via RC).

That's what we asked to HDI: a hack which lets us to define a constant delay for chosen files.
But as I said before... It doesn't seem that HDI care about this issue :?

So looked at the thread and I have to say I am not convinced anyone has defined the problem - the set up you have described above is my configuration and I have NEVER had a lipsync problem - and most of my 200 video's are MKV.
I am not denying the problem exists - too many people have it, but not sure people have really tied down the issue. There is more than one variable here, software, mkv, amp, Dune - until this weeks firmware update I was no fan of the Dune, but it has now resolved many of my issues, except MKV chapters.
The fact that the MKV runs on a PC is no test, many people rip to iso using a very well known piece of software that always (in my experience) runs on the PC, but often will not run on other setups, and there have been similar situations with MKV.
My first question would be how are people creating the MKV, because there is some real **** software out there including some packages that many people use that apparently do not truly follow the rules for mkv creation.
Not trying to be argumentative, but what doesn't work for you, does work in my environment.

@twol: more than correct.
the variables are really many and.. yes it could be the couple DUNE/AMP, could be the way the MKV was encoded, could be the multiplex between audio and video, could be many feactor, you are right.
This said: instead of adding a lot of strange things to this dune_folder... why not adding this extremely useful audio_delay option ?
See from this viewpoint: if someone experiences the issue, he could not care about the root cause, could simply go to the dune_folder of that movie, set the dealy and .. that's it.
Maybe one day or another you will also meet a MKV that pops up with a lipsync on your system and, maybe, that day you are not going to 'waste' time to reencode it adjusting the delay for your system (ONLY). (if you want to have the
issue permanently solved).
I have with this firmware that a lot of my itunes mkv's with AAC2.0 in them do not work on my Yamaha RX-V765. I didn't change any settings in the Dune and Yamaha.
I use bitstreaming and I tried to let the Dune decode. All I get is PCM displayed in my Yamaha but no sound.
Anyone maybe does have some suggestions for me?

Hi,
Again........Recordings does not work!! This has not been working through some FW-releases now (press play to start and stop recording of tv-programs).....or am I doing it wrong?
I have only testet with one DVB-T (I dont have two :-)).
If i downgrade the FW to an earlier version there is no problems.

Hi twol,

The problem is with AC3 tracks and listening through an A/V receiver.

I should point out that as regards the lipsync issue, 95% of my files have DTS 1.5mbit sound and they all have the -0.22 second lipsync bug. So it's really not just limited to Dolby Digital. I know I've heard that before, but my experience shows no difference between Dolby Digital/DTS - it's almost more related to file complexity/size (ie. big 1080p files).
I saw it for nearly a year on Optical Bitstream, and now I'm seeing it on HDMI bitstream. I would like to use HDMI decode, except for a different Dune bug.
It's not the file per sae, because there are no lipsync issues when the file is played back on a wide variety of systems.
It's also not the system, because the Dune is the only HDMI device I've ever used to have this issue (I have 4 other HDMI devices connected to this particular system, and about 4 others on other systems also without issue).
Is it a compatibility issue with certain MKV files? Maybe. However they should still figure it out since these are not rare isolated issues. Even if said fix is simply figuring out what combination of issues triggers the bug, and having the device automatically apply that -0.22 second delay.
Maybe my understanding of gapless audio playback is different from yours, but in the last beta I had the problem that, when the player switched to the next chapter in a dvd-ISO playback, tha audio would drop (for half a second or so)
In the current beta firmware this issue is resolved (at least on my Prime 3.0)
This was about the only issue I had, everything I start at my Dune plays without a problem from my NAS.
So here's a happy user!!
Assuming the format is supported you can use Handbrake or Ripbot264 to encode to an h264 mkv/mp4
thx! will try
Craig,
Thanks for commenting. I also scraped an Emotiva pre/pro (UMC-1) that I loved because it was doing the same needless conversions.
Yup, I always fall back on the BDP-93 if I actually want to see the BD in its best quality. The DUNE looks ok, but not as good as a solid BD player.
Short story is...
If you take a BD file it is in YCbCr 4:2:0 from the disc. Converting from 4:2:0 to 4:2:2 is lossless, so if your player can pass this through you will get all the original data from the original file. What the dune is clearly doing is converting to RGB inside the unit and then converting back to YCbCr 4:4:4. The conversion to RGB has losses and the conversion back to YCbCr 4:4:4 also has more loss. After that your VP50 has to convert back to YCbCr 4:2:2 and then again to RGB for processing. And then other conversions may or may not take place depending on your signal chain.
This is also where the color space error comes into play that DUNE has been dealing with. When you convert HD YCbCr 4:2:0 to RGB you have to use the Rec709 color decoder matrix. DUNE does not always use the correct matrix and certain files that are not flagged a certain way will be put through the SD Rec601 matrix. This results in incorrect colors on screen and loss of even more data. Furthermore, when you convert RGB back to the YCbCr 4:4:4 that the DUNE supports they need to use the correct color encoder matrix. This seems to be fixed now, but it was a problem in the past. If DUNE could pass YCbCr 4:2:2 they would never have the color encoder/decoder issue at all for HDMI users.
All the extra conversions inside the DUNE reduce the original data in the file. This is especially annoying when you have a video processor down stream because the VP can benefit from as much of the original data as you can give it for its own processing (this is true for a TV too because a TV has a built in VP). This is why the Oppo looks better... because it sends ALL of the original source data from the files on the BD.
Regards,
craigr
..and I've just replaced my Oppo BDP-83 with a Prime 3.0
I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but trading in a reference quality BD player for a media player is never going to be a good idea if video quality is your ultimate goal. Media players are not catering to the high end market or video quality. They are basically consumer grade junk and the manufacturers care much more about getting products out fast and frequently than they do about fine details in video quality.
Oppo is the polar opposite to DUNE. Oppo cares about the over all quality of the player and especially video and audio quality. Oppo cares very much about customer feedback and making sure they build the best quality unit they can. DUNE cares about supporting 50 million different file formats, web browsers, internet radio, other ****, and being everything for everyone. Oppo has one primary goal and DUNE has who knows how many goals.

Hi,
The problem is with AC3 tracks and listening through an A/V receiver.
And the problem isn´t there when you connect directly to a TV capable of decoding AC3? If the delay is not there then it is not a problem of HDI it is a problem of your setup.
Have you tried to disable all "picture improvements" like 100Hz and all filters in your TV?
Ralf

Ralf, whatever the reason how long does it take to add the extraitem to the dunefolder configuration file and let the DUNE read the audiodelay from there ?
The Hi-pIx, 100Hz, Full motion filters and so on of course apply delays as well but they also improve the video quality.
On the other hand my Harman Kardon can manage the audiodelay on the AMP itself. Dune can manage the delay via RC (so the solution for lipsync is there on DUNE, nobody says the opposite). The only fact is that evrytime you have to set it manually on DUNE or on the AMP.
As the DUNE is still in beta firmware.. I think it is more than reasonable to ask for this enahncement. if it won't be there at the end.. we'll go on working as today !!:grin:

Craig, awesome explanation and I'm going to borrow this if you don't mind.;) I have been discussing this issue over on AVS in the various media player forums and I feel like I'm in a foreign country trying to order food.
Hi,
Again........Recordings does not work!! This has not been working through some FW-releases now (press play to start and stop recording of tv-programs).....or am I doing it wrong?
I have only testet with one DVB-T (I dont have two :-)).
If i downgrade the FW to an earlier version there is no problems.

Does your Dune remote have a Record button?
I saw something in the firmware changelog about the Play button no longer being used to record; only the Record button will now record.

110127_2105 beta runs on my max ok. Didn't find any problems vith video files or bd images, but some .flac files make no sound, while dune indicates them as recognised and plays them. What problem with it?
for instance this file

btw, the same was with previous beta..
What a luck that the human eye converts images without any glitches and everyone see's the same, perfect.

So looked at the thread and I have to say I am not convinced anyone has defined the problem - the set up you have described above is my configuration and I have NEVER had a lipsync problem - and most of my 200 video's are MKV.
I forget one important point. Our tests have been done with all post-processing filters/effects disabled. These video processing delayed the video display and can partially cancel the lipsync problem. Some TV don't let the user to disable all these post-processing effets.
There is another point. We are speaking about a delay which is 1/5s.
Everyone don't have the same sensitivity and perceive differently this delay. Many testers didn't notice this sync issue until we help them to perceive this delay. Once they were able to perceive this delay, they described it as very annoying.
This delay is so short that when you see a mkv with translated soundtrack, it's very difficult to notice it.
Finally, HDTV is often already affected by a short A/V delay. When you play one of these records (muxed in a mkv file) with the DUNE player (in conditions described before) the lipsync issue is far more noticeable.
We proceed to these tests with a strict protocol in order to eliminate the potential sources of this issue. Personnaly I have done these tests with a laptop PC (bitstream AV over hdmi) and a xtreamer.
I've about 4 TB of mkv HD movies/series. And I'have tested about 40 mkv with differents characteristics. MediaInfo was a precious tool in order to do excel table for comparison tests.
The facts are:
- I have absolutely no lipsync issue with the xtreamer and the PC when they bistream A/V to the A/V Amplifier
- Many other tester have the same results when they replace the DUNE 3.0 with an old DUNE (1.0 or 2.0) or another player.
- When the Dune audo settings is set to PCM over HDMI, there is no audio out of sync !!!
- When these video are converted to M2TS for example, there is no more lipsync problem.
- The same issue has been noticed on the Syabas players
- Too many people noticed this problem
You speak about a feeling. We speak about tests results.
It's not cause you're not affected by this issue with your Dune 3.0 that this issue is not coming from the Dune 3.0.
Hi garmill,
than you complain was formulated in a wrong manor. I read it this way that the dune produces a delay between audio and video.
What you want is that the delay is stored and present when you switch it on again. Two totally different things.

I think he's asking for one or the other. The Dune has a sync problem and it should be fixed. But if they can't fix it, then at least give us a workaround that will stick.
Yes they are two totally different things, either one of which will be acceptable.

Maybe my understanding of gapless audio playback is different from yours, but in the last beta I had the problem that, when the player switched to the next chapter in a dvd-ISO playback, tha audio would drop (for half a second or so)
In the current beta firmware this issue is resolved (at least on my Prime 3.0)
This was about the only issue I had, everything I start at my Dune plays without a problem from my NAS.
So here's a happy user!!
Gapless audio is when playing back music that is a mixed or continuous album.
This could be for example a 20 track album that has no gaps between each track so the music flows sounding like a single track but you can easily skip to a particular track if you want to.
At the moment the Dune inserts a small gap while it accesses the next track so there is a pause rather than continuous music. If the same album is played on an iPod or in Winamp on a pc using the same playlist .m3u no gaps in the music are heard.
On the last firmware the gap or pause was longer than it is now but either way it's still not gapless & spoils playback of these albums which I have quite a lot of.
I hope they can fix it for the stable release.
Movie playback is still great imho though!
;)
I can now confirm (at least based on 20 minutes experimentation) that the lipsync problem definitely disappears when HDMI - Decode is used. Now if only the file player output 5.1 correctly...
how can i recode them to h.264?
Handbrake is really easy to use and multiplatform. Ffmpeg is he most advanced tool, but not that easy to use as handbrake.

TVIX6500 (2008 player) has these functions.
Really?!?! Every player has at least 2 or 3 features on their firmware that do not work while they work on another player. The TVIX6500 has several features that the Dunes already have and have offered since version 1.0/2.0. So no need to compare one player with another cause it could be an endless tit for tat.
Firmwares are like chicken soup. Even though they are all made with the same ingredients, they all taste a little different.
My appologies!
You are right.
It was not my intention to start any comparison.
Better to say "3 year old players" have these basic features.
Since the last 2 betas when I start to play a BluRay rip (*.ts, *.m2ts) that has one single HD Audio track like TrueHD or DTS HDMA, no sound comes out. My AV AMP report No Input.
I have to press "popup menu" and "pick the film" from the popup menu. This then restarts the film and the audio is present. It means that if you resume, you have to restart to get audio.
Pressing Audio and picking the HD Audio track does not make the sound appear.
If there are 2 audio tracks you can press audio and switch between tracks to make the audio start.
It would be nice to get this fixed before it becomes stable.

Lip sync problem with mkv playback seems to be solved.
Played BD disc that are 2+ hours long, Experienced lost of signal -screen go black (with HDMI signal lost indicated on PJ) for few seconds (I think when disc layer changed). Same disc played without a hitch with older firmware. Has anyone ran into similar issue?
For me this new firmware almost perfect.
Only one missing function is the mkv chapter capable...
Please dear HDI team, make this function working!

Please dear HDI team, make IP remote features available also in 2.0 systems!
Does your Dune remote have a Record button?
I saw something in the firmware changelog about the Play button no longer being used to record; only the Record button will now record.
I have tried every singel button on the remote. I know the "repeat"-button should be a new "Record"-button, but this is not working either.

Here's a short list what i have discovered with the new update:
When pressed "forward" during playback to seach in time of a song sometimes it skippes 1 or more tracks,
When pressed "next" during playback of a HDCD is seams that the optical SPDIF output switch on and off which cause a re-detect of my receiver for the right signal,
Some DVD menus won't work, example "Pink Floyd - Pulse" it seams that the direction buttons won't work but when i play the same dvd with my XBMC it works flawless.
My 2 cents
Hi,
menu problem is an old bug. Press 1, 2, 3 and so on to select the menu option. It worked for me on former firmware versions.
Ralf
I still have issues with HDMI Audio [Enable/Disable] option set to [Disabled].
In some situations the audio output to HDMI will cause my TV to output something that looks like White Noise, or normal audio is available on HDMI Output when it shouldn't.
This only applies to playback of movies containing Multi Channel Audio.
Playback of movie files containing 2-Channel audio is allways correcly muted, even if playback of multi channel gives noise on HDMI Output.
Sometimes it just works, othertimes it doesn't, there is nothing constant about it.
It sometimes helps to restart Dune, but not always. Nothing constant here either. I found a workaround that works for me 100% if the time.
Sometimes the sound on HDMI Output is correctly muted. But after playing a few movies files (DVD-ISO / MKV) containing Multi Channel Audio, it eventually goes wrong and White Noise appears on HDMI Output.
After playing a few files with Multi Channel Audio, it always breaks for all DVD-ISO's and MKV files I play, it will not return to normal on its own.
It only happens when the audio to HDMI output [Original (Bitstream)/PCM (Decode)] is set to [Original (Bitstream)] and the played file contains Multi Channel Audio. With Audio Mode set to PCM (Decode) it allways works, but I want Multi Channel Audio on my DTS Receiver.
When it happens (during playback of Multi Channel Audio), setting Audio Output Mode to PCM (Decode) fixes the issue, but I lose Multi Channel Audio. Not an option or workaround. Reverting to Original (Bitstream) brings back the problem, allways.
I sure hope this can be fixed.
Workaround when Audio Muting on HDMI Output breaks
Note: Do not restarted the Dune before performing these steps
- Set HDMI Audio [Enable/Disable] to Enabled
Play a movie file with 2-Channel Audio. Notice there is audio available on HDMI Output without White Noise.
- Set HDMI Audio [Enable/Disable] to Disabled
Play a movie file with 2-Channel Audio. Notice that audio is correctly muted on HDMI Output
Play a movie file with Multi Channel Audio.
- Problem should be gone. If you still have White Noise or other audio on HDMI Output, then repeat the complete workaround.
It seams the problem allways disappears after repeating the workaround,
unless you have played more than one file with Multi Channel Audio before repeating this workaround.

Some DVD menus won't work, example "Pink Floyd - Pulse" it seams that the direction buttons won't work but when i play the same dvd with my XBMC it works flawless.
Try to press "SELECT" button to switch between "menu mode" (like a normal DVD player) and "seek mode" (to seek using cursor buttons). It worked for me.
Does anybody have the problem that the auto aspect ratio doesn't function correctly...
On some DVD's I have the movie does scale correctly but the subtitles and/or menus don't...
That's on a Smart D1 on component out... but I guess this will be also the case on HDMI out...

today I have bught a br disc film..my dune bpd3 plays it perfectly..
before that I have tried two dvd films but it has got problems and still continueing but I got surprised when it plays the br film.
I tired it because some of my firends at forum also tries and bdp3 plays theirs too.
Do we critisize bdp3 severely or are we right?
The biggest issue I have with my Dune Base 3.0 is that it scales the output and changes the colorspace. Is it even possible to fix this through firmware? For instance, I want 4:2:2 colorspace from the Dune and then let my DVDO scaler change that to 4:4:4. This is the way my Oppo Bluray player works and there is a difference. I guess we are talking about a "source direct" mode. I have not updated to the new firmware yet but I don't expect it will address this issue since it wasn't listed in the update notes.
Hello to everybody
It is solved the old problem with colorspace on the new firmware?

Hello...
Do you think we have any chance to see this issue of colorspace solved?
Thanks
Has anyone had problems scaling 720p material (could be at 25/30/60fps) x264 in a MKV to 1080p auto or fixed refresh rate out? I believe it is limited to this firmware release but I could be wrong.
More info on the problem here. (http://www.mpcclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26382)
I really hope to have auto output resolution soon. Also, 4:2:2 color space would be really nice too. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
I have a problem with HD-Audio. When the first audio track in a TS or M2TS rip is HD it does not play back when you start the film. You have to bring up the audio menu and switch audio tracks back and forth. If you only have 1 audio track you must press pop-up and restart the film to get any audio.
I also have a problem with many of my Ghibli DVD ISO rips (PAL R2, but R2 removed with AnyDVD). They stutter like crazy. They play fine on my Xtreamer. I have tracked this down to the "alternate angle" storyboards that are embedded in the video. If I re-encode with Nero and remove alternate angles it plays fine. Dune can't handle alternate angles.
But I can say that this 3-year-old player (TiVX6500) does not play MKV+FLAC (5.1/7.1) which the Dunes can do with no issues. So basic features are not so basic if its something that you want to use but others don't.
I am very happy that you got your MKV+FLAC (5.1/7.1) feature.
Great to see gapless audio playback for flac media files has appeared - but only for audio played in the background to a photo or slideshow.
But at least we now know it's possible on the Dune!
Any idea when gapless audio playback will make it in to full functionality - ie when the media files are played, not just in a slide-show?
Thanks
Really?
The DUNE makes Gapless during a slideshow?
He needs a playlist for this feature.
When you create a playlist and start it without any slideshow, only music, can the DUNE play gapless?
I don't use playlists, but this could be an argument...

My feeling too... Seems odd that HDI implemented gapless audio playback when looking at a photo, but not gapless audio playback when just playing back the audio media files!
Hopefully it's on their list to implement fully in the final firmware release.
Until then I'll be looking a lot of album art I guess! :)

You're not quit right. If you are in a folder and press OK it plays the whole folder also (but not gapless)
In my folders i dont see the names of the individual files because i chose to put a picture of the back cover instead (made with dune explorer), so u used to press OK, untill now that was...

Keep in mind that releasing a new firmware -- even beta -- requires a lot of testing. They need to make sure, at a minimum, that they don't brick anyone's Dune. And with all the models they've got out there, that's a lot of testing.
So if they release more frequently, it means they're spending relatively more effort on testing, and relatively less effort on developing new, useful features and bug fixes.
Sylvester_Lauritsen
21-02-11, 07:58
Yeah it requires alot of testing. But maybe Dune shuldnt be focused on releasing hundreds of different media players
well i just want the feature that was in the dune base firmware - region free which was promised to me prior to purchasing - you say there is a lot of beta testing , my question is why would you take region free out of the firmware prior to new models coming out ?
and to be honest this is something that can be done quite easily by dune - otherwise how can they sell these units worldwide? how ?
if i live in america i would want a region A player right - how is this done ?
Hi,
I've installed this Beta Release and have a Seagate eSATA 1Tb drive connected to my BD Prime. The issue is the unit hangs on power-up as the disk drive starts to spin up and then suddenly stops leaving the Dune hung in the 'Loading' state on the font panel. I have seen this before on the prevous Beta version. The only solution is to power the unit completely off and try again which usually works. Is this a bug which is going to be fixed via a further firmware update?

Hi,
I've installed this Beta Release and have a Seagate eSATA 1Tb drive connected to my BD Prime.
Thanks.
Is your drive is externally powered? Sounds as power issue, not firmware.
Yes it has an external supply. I guess I could try plugging into a different source. I also thought I saw something on the forum about timing errors on the Dune's bus causng issues with external devices but I may be wrong.
Hi spawn213,
have you tested the region free patch. On my Prime 3 it worked for the last firmware but I am not sure if it works with the latest beta.

I like this firmware overall and the clokc in suspend is very nice--but I have two HD Center v2's and they will not seemingly work with the new SMB server feature. Shouldnt I be able to see the installed HDD (WD20EADS and WD20EARS, working fine otherwise) in a Windows browser under "DUNE" by default?
The update says you they upgraded/changed "various SMB server settings (including the ability to assign custom server name and workgroup name)" BUT does anyone have this working? Anyone customise these fields ad get it to work--or even get it to work on defaults so you can access the HDD from a windows computer in Windows Explorer?
How do you get your HD Center internal formatted HDD to be accessible directly via a windows system to upload/download/modify files on the disk? If anyone has this working please post here or PM me. Its nice to be able to copy by the Dune copy/paste info menus, but I figured with SMB server capability this should work also through windows, like the players HDD is accessible like a SMB NAS if the player is on (or dare I ask, in suspend mode?) Does the SMB server work in suspend mode? Thanks!
Lastly it sure would be nice to get IP control commands on these HD Center 2.0's with native gigabit... they sure were expensive...
I was a bit hasty--got it working a little bit, it took awhile for the names/HDD's to populate in windows, but there are restrictions on the fields, it looks like using spaces is out and the fields cant be very long...

Looks like you've already got it working, but for the record: it does work like you want it to, and it works even when the Dune is in suspend.

Yes! so true... you are correct sir. I verified that after much testing. If you use the Dune copy/paste feature then it is typically faster (like 8Mbps), but you cannot shutdown--but if you suspend the player and get that nice new clock in the display, you can get 4 to 6Mbps transfer speed. This is great, all I need to do is custom-name my HDD (like this page notes : http://www.mpcclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26017 and the HDD will be doing just what I want with SMB) and make sure for both my green drives that the wdidle3 and wdtler are set to /S0 and ON, respectively, if the setting is allowed, so my drives dont LCC kill themsleves to death. Lerrned that lesson from a now RMA'ed Netgear Readynas Pro.
Actually, Anyone know if the HDD in the hd center v2 suspends if not used with newest beta fw?
Need to look next for a "fan on/off" FW switch I just read about....and modify my fans to be bigger and quieter and have more ventilation+cooling (maybe 2 low power fans)
Can check does the region free patch works with dune latest firmware dune_firmware_hdmax_110127_2105_beta.dff?*
Wasnt there an option earlier to dim the display? Can we get this option? and some more spare parts like prime v1 and HD center v2 power supplies while we have Dune's ear...
Back to the point, didnt this Fw or a previous one have an option to dim the display on a HD center v2? Id really appreciate that feature, as the display is very bright at night when the room is dark except for the center v2 in suspend (set it up to take regular pushes of new content to the WD green HDD). I'm having trouble with the 'gigabit HDi original' kit in this, replaced it with one of my kits to see if mine's better... we shall see...
my prime is still showing a significant audio desynchronization at 23.976Hz.
also, I've noticed the prime will create macroblocks occassionally. I've only noticed this on file playback (although I haven't tried a bluray for a while). But when it happens audio/video will desynchronise by about a second, and if you go back 10/20 seconds and play the same section again it works perfectly.

FYI:
I had the opportunity to upgrade on-line but that failed (open failed 1502). I had to use a freshly formatted FAT32 USB stick.
Upgrade was painless. No problems so far:D
