Hi guys, I really need your help here. I have been looking for a new NAS server to replace my old ReadyNAS NV+, witch is running out of space. right now i got 4x0,75TB installed and ofc i can upgrate it but i like the new features some of the new NAS have, such as beening able to use diffence sizes of drives, and upgrating them 1 by 1 insted of needing to upgrate all 4(or more) every time i run out of space.
I have been looking around and and right now i am stuck between the 6 bay ReadyNAS Ultra Series and at the DS1511+ from Synology.
I am thinking of starting with 3x2Tb drives, for the new NAS, or replacing all 4 drives with 2TB in the old NAS witch is running X-raid.
So here is my questions:
1. is it worth upgrating my old ReadyNAS NV+, or is it worth buying a new model?
2. if it is worth upgrating my old NAS can there go any thing worng while replacing drives? (I have no way of taking backup of all the data on it, and i can't risk losing it.)
3. is there another NAS out there? that is better then the 2 i have given?
4. if the ReadyNAS Ultra Series is the best, is it worth going ReadyNAS Ultra plus?

I posted same question (number 4) myself, but never got any answer. Anyway after reading more about the products I just placed an order for the Ultra 6. (non plus version) as I think the processing capacity is enough for my needs at least the coming 5 years.
Be aware though, when it comes to the ability to use diffence sizes of drives.
This was something that I initially was looking into myself and liked a lot as I have plenty of different sized drives at the moment. BUT.... there is a MAJOR drawback. When running in raid, it bases the sizes of the HDD on the smallest one in the system. So if you for ex put 3x2TB and 1x1TB, you will not get 7TB, you will get 4TB. (As the 2TB will be sized like the smallest one which is 1TB)
Info from Readynas homepage Support FAQ.
What is the volume capacity when installing disks of different sizes?
Volume capacity will be limited by the smallest disk. For example, if you are installing one 250GB drive and three 750GB drives, your data volume capacity will be limited to 250GB on each of the four disks. In Flex-RAID mode, you can utilize the leftover space on the 3 750GB disks by creating another data volume (3 x 500GB). With X-RAID, if you replace the single 250GB disk with a 750GB disk, your capacity will automatically expand, utilizing all 750 GB from each of the 4 disks.

.... not as great then :/ i do not sound like it is worth the upgate then,(after all 99,9% of the time i only use it as storage space for my streamplayers/TV recorders. After all the fetures on the nv+ vs the untra is almost the same if you don't look at the xraid 2. I think I will just buy 4x2T copy all the data i got on my nas on to 1 of them, put the 3 others in the nas and copy the date on to the nas from the 4th, and then put that one on the nas. That way i get around 6 TB of space(4TB free), and i got the old 4x750 GB as a backup in case something happens with the new drives aleast that way i will only lose the new data i collect.
btw thank you for your reply
