HI-Jack --> HDI Dune has released a new firmware update which brings a lot of improvements and new functions to all models of Dune HD media players. The most visual improvement will be a completely refreshed interface. Honestly, opinions will vary on the new interface as things have become a bit less modern (more retro) and looks and feels quite "Chinese" compared to the earlier interface, hence where the "skins" come in handy. Kudos for the animation effects though, things run a little smoother now. Things have become easier to access but HDI may have some work cut out for them to further improve... Take your vote rather you like this new interface more than the older variant. Luckily, the interface is not the only enhancement to show off...

Official HDI message:
The firmware update has version number 110511_2107_beta and beta status. As always, this firmware update is provided for all generations of Dune HD media players, including both all new models and all outdated/discontinued models (14 different models based on 3 different platforms: Sigma Designs 863x, 864x, and 865x):

- Dune HD Ultra
- Dune HD Mini
- Dune BD Prime
- Dune HD Center
- Dune HD Base
- Dune HD Base 2.0
- Dune BD Prime 3.0
- Dune HD Base 3.0
- Dune HD Max
- Dune HD Smart H1
- Dune HD Smart D1
- Dune HD Smart B1
- Dune HD Duo
- Dune HD Lite 53D

The new firmware version includes a completely new graphical interface (with more advanced graphics, animation effects, support for skins, new main menu style, weather widget, many other user interface improvements), support for CUE-sheets, support for MKV-chapters, new improved version of DVD engine, SHOUTCast and RadioTime services (thousands of free Internet radio stations), and many other new features and improvements.

For Dune HD models based on the Sigma Designs 864x and 865x platforms, the new firmware version also includes extended support for controlling the player via USB mouse and keyboard, support for Dune HD Qwerty RF remote, and some other features and improvements.

The firmware update can be downloaded and installed via either the built-in online firmware upgrade function of Dune HD media players, or using the official Dune HD firmware web site:
http://dune-hd.com/firmware

HDI Dune is also working on other new features and improvements which will be included into next firmware versions. The features which most probably will come with the nearest firmware updates include: “lite” Blu-ray playback mode for BDMV folders and BD ISO files (with full support for Blu-ray playlists, playlist choosing, audiotrack choosing, subtitles choosing, chapters navigation, bookmarks, zoom and other possibilities), FlashLite applications support and web browser also for Dune HD Lite 53D model, additional options for working with HDDs (support for 3TB+ HDDs, GPT, “advanced format”, EXT3/NTFS formatting, updated NTFS driver, etc), migration to the newest Sigma SDK, improved audio player, better integration of FlashLite applications, better integration of the web browser, extended DVB functionality (with EPG and other features), management of bookmarks and “recently played” movies, new Internet video/music services (and also an SDK for the addition of other Internet video/music services and IPTV/VOD applications).

The complete list of new functions and improvements in the new firmware version:

* Completely new graphical interface.
- New background image, new icons, more advanced graphics for all GUI
elements (glasses, dialogs, controls, OSD, etc).
- Animation effects.
- NOTE: it is recomended to use 50/60Hz video mode as the default
video mode in order to ensure smooth animation.
- NOTE: animation effects can be disabled in Setup / Appearance.
- Improved text look.
- The space between characters and the width of whitespace character
optimized.
- Ability to create and install custom GUI skins.
- More information: http://dune-hd.com/support/skins
- Ability to switch GUI skins on-the-fly.
- GUI skins can be switched via the setting "Setup / Appearance /
Skin", or via "B" RC button on the main screen (and also via "ZOOM"
RC button on any screen).
- Several GUI skins are included into the firmware.

* New tab-based main menu interface.
- All items from the main menu are now grouped into the
following top-level folders:
- "Sources": locally attached storage devices, configured network
folders, and "Network Browser" function.
- "TV": TV services (when available).
- "Favorites": shortcuts to favorite items (previously
known as "items added to main screen").
- "Applications": all other applications and services.
- "Setup": player settings.
- By default, all top-level folders are now represented as "tabs" at the
top of the screen.
- In Setup / Appearance, the user can switch between the following
styles of the main menu:
- "Tabs": the new default menu style ("tabs" at the top of the
screen).
- "Fodlers": show all top-level folders as regular folders in
the main area.
- "Plain": do not group main screen items into folders (the
same behavior as in previous firmware versions).

* Added widget for showing weather and current date/time information.
- The widget is shown at the top right corner of the screen (in the main
menu only, not during playback).
- The widget can be configured or disabled via "Setup / Applications /
Widget".
- NOTE: When no information is available (e.g. when Internet connection
is not available), the widget shows Dune HD logo.

* Various other user interface improvements.
- Added more predefined icon-based view modes for folders: 3x2, 3x3,
4x2, view modes with right panel.
- "Extended list" view mode is renamed to "List with right panel".
- Added the ability to quickly switch between view modes by pressing "A"
RC button.
- Debug dump function (which was previously available via triple
press of "A" RC button) is now available via tripple press of
"PAUSE" RC button.
- "Add to favorites" function can be quickly called by "D" RC button.
- "Copy" and "Paste" functions can be quickly called by "B" and "C" RC
buttons.
- The help line at the bottom of the screen indicates currently
available shortcut RC buttons ("A", "B", "C", "D", "POP UP") and their
functions.
- When launching the playback, "ENTER" RC button now works as "PLAY" by
default, i.e. builds a playlist consisting of all items in the current
folder and starts the playback of the currently selected item.
Usually, this improves the conveniency when the folder contains
multiple items (e.g. photos, music files, series, links to Internet
radio stations, links to TV channels, etc). The old behavior (do not
build the playlist, play just the selected item) can be restored via
settings (see "Setup / Advanced / File Browser").
- The current folder path at the top of the screen is now always shown
as just single line (with scrolling when the path is too long).
- Bugfix: "TOP MENU" RC button did not work in some Setup screens.

* Added support for CUE-sheet playlist files.
- When playing an audio file, is there is an associated CUE-sheet file
(should have the same filename as the audio file, but with ".cue"
extension), the CUE-sheet file is automatically used.
- "PREV"/"NEXT" RC buttons allow to switch between tracks.
- The OSD menu ("POP UP MENU" RC button) allows to see the list of
tracks and switch to the desired track.
- When the playlist contains multiple audio files, CUE-sheet files are
also detected and used for each audio file (the detection is performed
when an audio file starts to play for the first time). The OSD menu
groups all tracks by the corresponding files.
- Also added support for built-in CUE-sheets in FLAC, APE and WavPack
files.

* Added support for chapters in MKV files.
- "PREV"/"NEXT" RC buttons allow to switch between chapters.
- The OSD menu ("POP UP MENU" RC button) allows to see the list of
chapters and switch to the desired chapter.
- When the playlist contains multiple MKV files, chapters are also
detected and used for each MKV file (the detection is performed when a
MKV file starts to play for the first time). The OSD menu groups all
chapters by the corresponding files.

* New version of DVD engine.
- The new version of the DVD engine adds the support for multiangle
feature and improves the support for DVD-Video discs with advanced
DVD-menu and interactive features.
- If needed, the old version of the DVD engine may be chosen via Setup /
Miscellaneous / System / DVD engine.

* Added settings for preferred languages of disc menu, audio track,
subtitles.
- See "Setup / Playback / Language".
- Supported for BD/DVD-Video discs/images and files.
- NOTE: The default value of these language settings is "English". So,
if there are several audio or subtitles tracks and the "English" one
is not the first one, it will be automatically chosen (instead of
choosing the first track, as it took place previously).
- Also added a new setting (see "Setup / Playback / Subtitles") which
allows to enable subtitles by default not only for files, but also for
DVD-Video discs/images.

* Various playback improvements.
- General improvements for playback of HTTP audio streams (such as
Internet radio stations).
- CD audio playback improvements: faster startup and gapless playback.
- Improvement: for autoframerate function, non-standard framerates
between 23.976Hz and 24Hz are now treated as 23.976Hz (rather than
24hz).
- Bugfix: Viewing photos from a UPnP source did not work (the problem
introduced in previous firmware versions).
- Bugfix: Unsupported REW (fast rewind) command for TS files was wrongly
handled as fast forward rather than ignored.
- Bugfix: Playlist shuffle function could use an already previously used
random sequence in some cases.
- Bugfix: MP3 files with very large embedded covers could not be played.
- Bugfix: MP3 files with specific ID3 tags could not be played.
- Bugfix: ".mts" files were wrongly handled as audio files.
- Bugfix: Pausing M4A files could cause playback stop in some cases.
- Bugfix: .M3U/.PLS playlist files with "UTF8 BOM" header could not be
played.
- Bugfix: specific TS files (such as specific broadcast recordings)
could be played wrongly or with pause/seek not working.
- Bugfix: specific MKV files could not be played.
- Bugfix: BD-R/DVD-R discs could play with problems in some cases.

* Improved handling of RC buttons during playback.
- "PREV" RC button now navigates through the history of the previously
played playlist items only in the shuffle playback mode and only after
normal transitions (selecting an item in the playlist and manually
jumping to it resets the history).
- "TOP MENU" RC button now allows to go to the main screen also from
file playback mode.

* Added new audio output configuration possibilites.
- The setting "Setup / Audio / Audio decoding mode" allows to specify
the number of channels (stereo, 5.1, 7.1), which should be output to
analog audio outputs and HDMI output.

* Improved output of DTS-CD audio streams.
- Removed 14-bit to 16-bit conversion, which is undesired in some cases.
- Added the new setting "Setup / Audio / DTS CD audio conversion", which
allows to revert back the old behavior (enable 14-bit to 16-bit
conversion) when needed.

* DVB-T related improvements.
- Usability improvement: when watching DVB-T channels, "ENTER" RC button
opens the list of DVB-T channels (as "POP UP MENU" RC button).

service).

* Minor improvements for "IVI.ru" application.
- Added showing some information about listed movies in the right panel.

* A lot of new features and improvements for "Kartina.TV" application.
- Integrated the new "Videoteka" function based on the new "Dune VOD"
mechanism (planned to be used for other VOD services as well).
- Movies can be filtered by categories (including filtering by
multiple categories).
- Movies can be searched by title (with on-screen virtual keyboard).
- When browsing the list of movies, different view modes can be
switched.
- Detailed movie information can be shown.
- Movies with series are supported (including series selection before
and durign movie playback).
- "Dune TV" mechanism improvements:
- Added the possibility to switch different view modes when browsing
the list of TV channels.
- Added hints about the possibilities to use "B", "C", "D" RC buttons
to manage favorite TV channels.
- Added automatic resuming of TV playback after power-off/power-on.
- Added remembering the last played TV channel. When resuming TV
playback (automatically after power-off/power-on, or when entering
the application via "PLAY" RC button), the remembered TV channel is
restored.
- Added showing not only date, but also week day in the EPG menu.
- Increased the font size in the EPG menu; added a new setting
allowing to change the font size in the EPG menu.

- Animation:
- animation_enabled = yes|no (default is yes)
- Overall item layout:
- item_layout = center|left|right (default is center)
- Badge-based icons:
- paint_icon_badge_box = yes|no
- icon_badge_box_dx = N
- icon_badge_box_dy = N
- icon_badge_box_height = N
- icon_badge_box_width = N
- Selection frame visualization:
- icon_selection_box_dx = N
- icon_selection_box_dy = N
- icon_selection_box_height = N
- icon_selection_box_width = N
- Icon visualization:
- icon_margin_bottom = N
- icon_margin_left = N
- icon_margin_right = N
- icon_margin_top = N
- icon_sel_margin_bottom = N
- icon_sel_margin_left = N
- icon_sel_margin_right = N
- icon_sel_margin_top = N
- Caption visualization:

special handling of the HTTP URLs, which is often useful when playing
audio streams (such as Internet radio streams).
- Bugfix: relative paths did not work properly when used with virtual
items in dune_folder.txt.
- When the player communicates with an external application via
"dune_http://" protocol, the application now can determine various
information about the player (product id, firmware version, serial
number, current interface language) using "X-Dune-..." headers in HTTP
requests. Also, a specific "User-Agent" is now used in HTTP requests.

* Added new possibilities for authors of FlashLite applications.
- New operations added to Dune FlashLite API:

touchpad + remote with a RF USB dongle).
- NOTE: The support is preliminay, although most functions work, some
potential functions do not work yet.

* Improved handling of remote controls and IR signals.
- All IR codes expect codes from Dune HD remotes should be ignored now
in all cases (so, pressing any button on 3-party remote control should
not interrupt the screensaver) (except when 3-party remotes use the
same the same IR codes as Dune HD remotes).
- Added a Setup option to disable the compatibility with old kinds of
Dune HD remotes (Setup / Miscellaneous / Advanced / Old remote
support). (May be helpful if some 3-party remotes use the same IR
codes as old kinds of Dune HD remotes).
- Some other improvements in IR signal decoding and handling.

* Improved output to the front panel display.
- Improvement: when playing content having no known duration (such as
Internet radio stream), the title of the played item is shown instead
of meaningless playback counter.
- Added support for displaying characters from some european languages.

stored (without associated icons) in the internal flash memory (the
same memory as used for storing all player settings).
- NOTE: If some favorites are added when the system storage is not
attached, and after that the system storage is attached, the internal
flash memory still will be used to store the list of favorites.

* Improved web browser performance.
- Increased the amount of memory available for the web browser (and
other applications as well). This leads to increased web browser
performance and ability to work with more complex web sites.

* Various other improvements.
- Bugfix: adding shortcut (favorite) did not work when the filename
contained a specific character.
- Some previously missing characters added to fonts.
- Some interface languages added/updated.
- Some other improvements/fixes.

I'm getting a read failed (1601) error when trying to update my Dune 3.0 Prime.

It just happened at 21% - has happened so far 4 times I think. (I didn't catch the other 3 percentages to know if it is happening at the same place each time)

It doesn't seem to be getting hung up, just slowly downloading, then the above "crash"

Its always good news when a new firmware emerges.

But... Its sad to see that still there is no way to select a subtitle file with a different file name "on the fly". This was the most useful subtitle feature my old Tvix 6500A offered, a feature which existed from the very first time I used it (The 6500A), almost three years ago. And my super-duper Dune hd max still lacks.

I see in the list of upcoming features a lot of wonderful functionality. I would like to request one additional feature not listed. Native video output. For those of us that use external scalers this is a key feature and something that causes a loss of video quality in the current offering.

My Dune connects to an Edge Duo which is at the heart of my A/V system. Every component goes through the Edge where the video is scaled before being passed to my Pioneer Pro-150FD. Currently there is no way that I can find to disable the scaler on the Dune itself so video is being processed twice with sometimes bad effects.

Wow! That's a nice FW. New tab look is convenient. However, it also brought several more keypresses I need perform to start watching. Is that possible to start with favorites tab (say, sort tabs to place favorites in front)? Can I disable TV tab somehow, as I do not have DVB-T dongle? TV on main screen option is disabled, but does not affect tabs.

Tried adding a Custom Skin to no avail. Using Win Zip to creat a folder titled dune_skin with a aai image in it titled Custom.
Dune unpacks it and says new skin installed but only shows the Custom 'Default' Skin
Anyone sorted this out yet. I am itching to get fiddling!

Download it from http://dune-hd.com/firmware/

Dont download it from the internet using the player live update feature where it can easily get corrupted in transit.

The best way is to download the .zip file, unpack it to a share and just browse to it and click on the file with the dune.

Just installed and played with it ...

My compliments to Dune development, this FW looks very nice! The interface is not so cluttered anymore and looks much better. I settled for the mountain skin.
I do have one little complaint; where has the default yellow folder pic gone? I use cover pics but films without a cover pic, show an empty spot (just text)

My initial impressions, overall great GUI improvement. I suspect this beta is based on the new Sigma SDK 4. Have they used it already in the previous stable version? I am not sure.

The application "radiotime" is useful, allowing me to "easily" browse and play selected internet radios. I like the way the local weather, temperature, date and time is shown on the top right of the main screen, all in one place.

I haven't had time to fully test this latest firmware but here are a few screenshots of this 110511_2107_beta GUI...

http://img560.imageshack.us/img560/7624/dunesmartd1screenshot01.jpg
Look at the bottom left of the above screenshot. You can use your remote, press the "red" button to change the view styles of the displayed items OR use the "green" button to change the skins of the GUI. All this done on the fly.

http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/7376/dunesmartd1screenshot02.jpg
Empty so at the present moment this "TV" function is pretty much useless for me as I don't have any add-in boards or USB dongle.

http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/4503/dunesmartd1screenshot03.jpg
I went to the "Radiotime" application, chosen some stations and created shortcuts. These shortcuts appear in this dedicated area.

http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/5452/dunesmartd1screenshot04.jpg
The internet radio stations listed in Radiotime and Shoutcast makes it easier find the stations. I "think" the station list is realtime that is constantly updated but it could also be "predefined templates".

Not surprised when some stations I selected returned with "server not found". What caught me by surprise when my Smart D1 spoke back to me with a male voice !!! No text error message, a human voice that says ... "This stream is not compatible with this player!" ... when I tried to play a few of the stations. I wonder whose voice is that?

http://img864.imageshack.us/img864/1243/dunesmartd1screenshot05.jpg
On the surface I don't see much "difference" here compared to the previous GUI. But there are subtle differences beneath each icon.

Let's have a look at the "Appearance" section as shown at the screenshot below...

http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/3357/dunesmartd1skin01.jpg
This is the place where you can change the GUI Themes, a new feature for this new beta firmware. There are already a few templates that you can choose such as "Green", "Mountain", and so forth. However, I noticed that there is a "Custom" template which obviously allows us (the users) to import our own personal customised templates. It is great to allow us to change the GUI background wallpaper, however, we are required to "install" this custom skin first as shown at the below screenshot...

http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/407/dunesmartd1skin02.jpg
At this present time of typing my comments here, instructions for creating the zip file for your customised skin is still not yet ready at HDI Dune site.

http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/2355/dunesmartd1dvdengine.jpg
I noticed a new "DVD Engine" choice here. Could anyone enlighten me what "Type 1" and "Type 2" means? Mmm... does it refer to my D1 remote, black or silver type ? It could not be DVD Region as there are no type 3 to 7 to select, only Type 1 and 2 choices. I couldn't find any explanation or may have missed it but I hope HDI can explain its use.

EDIT : Me bad ! Thanks to kiskis who informed me. I did not read the firmware info carefully as these are two types of decoding engine for DVD interactive features. HDI did explain in their firmware info.

http://img852.imageshack.us/img852/8088/dunesmartd1savedscreens.jpg
Whenever I use the "Eject" button on my D1 remote to capture a screenshot, it is saved to any random disk location at "screenshot" folder. Let me explain. I have a 8GB SDCARD inserted in the front port of D1, an external harddisk plugged to a USB port and another external harddisk to the eSATA port. Well... hit capture once, screenshot saved to SDCARD. Remove the sdcard, capture again is now saved to "USB" harddisk. Fine...no problem. When sdcard is reinserted, capture don't save back to this sdcard location.

I hope that there is an option to allow us to select and choose a fixed default location to save the screenshots. When that "fixed" location is no longer available, it should display an error message such as "Location Not Available, Please Reconnect The Attached Storage"

Anyway, this screenshot capture feature is not important for me. Maybe I have been nickpicking here.

All the applications available in this firmware as shown in the above screenshot. (Screenshot re-edited to show all apps).

For Widgets, this defines what is to be displayed at the top right screen. 3 available here for...
(1) Temperature
(2) City
(3) Country
I think (2) and (3) displays the weather. Display of Date & Time is not set in Widget app. Please correct me if I am wrong here.

DTS CD audio conversion can now be disabled, "passthrough" without decoding. Audio decode mode have 2 choices... (1) 5.1 and (2) 7.1

Download it from http://dune-hd.com/firmware/

Dont download it from the internet using the player live update feature where it can easily get corrupted in transit.

The best way is to download the .zip file, unpack it to a share and just browse to it and click on the file with the dune.

Thanks.

Unfortunately I can't even download it that way right now. I got to 17% downloading it using firefox, and then pause, followed by download "crash".

I'm guessing the server just has a heavy load right now.

Style improvement yes.
The first feature I wanted corrected was the lack of rewind support for ts and m2ts files. Still doesn't work! They've removed the annoying FFWD that happens when you push rewind with these files, however the persistent absence of rewind is annoying. Other media players seem to do it.
What's wrong with dune?

My Uploaded File Estimated Removal Date : ~ 30 May 2011

I am just a Smart D1 user and don't work for HDI Dune.

As a kind gesture to fellow mediaplayer enthusiasts who are having problems with downloading from the firmware page of Dune, I have uploaded the same firmware file to Rapidshare...

https://rapidshare.com/files/3247669730/Dune_Firmware_HDSmart_D1_110511_2007_Beta.dff.zip

* Only for Dune Smart D1. Exactly the same file which I have downloaded from the site with no alterations whatsoever to the contents of the zip file. Sorry I will not be able to do the same for B1, H1, etc.

I have set to trafficshare download for free rapidshare users so no waiting time at full speed.

Note: I am using retail licensed Trend Micro Titanium Security which is up-to-date to ensure my PC is virus free. Having said that, please also recheck with your antivirus after downloading the file. I shall not be held responsible for any infection because of this. AFAIK, I have rechecked my downloaded file and confirmed no infection.

If you are having problems with rapidshare link encryption, then change the link from "https://..." to "http://..." without the "s"

I hope I am not illegally distributing here copyrighted firmware from HDI Dune so I will immediately delete it if HDI Dune or MPCclub complains. Hehe... I did not request their permission. Because of this, please don't redistribute this link to other places. I am only trying to help people here as I don't make money from rapidshare or from any methods.

Anyway, I will definitely remove it in about a few weeks once its not needed anymore.

Regards.

SORRY FOR THIS NEW OFF-TOPIC ADDITION
To Jack.Bauer... are you Kiefer Sutherland in person, the actor who played "Jack Bauer" of the US TV Series "24" ? Or alias namesake only ? Hehe.

Hi,

Looks pretty good and runs smoothly.....however I still have problems with the DVB-T functions.

- Still can't recorde from DVB-T.
- Still missing subtitles on some channels (DR HD and TV2 (Denmark))
- Channels are studdering - you can't hear it, but when e.g. a
"breaking-news"-line is running over the screen you can clearly see it.

and

- Still no subtitle support for .ts format (e.g. recordings from Dreambox).

Hope HDi will correct this soon.

[/I]

HDI allready explained about DVD engine..

And again: Where is the support to external, non-matching filename, and selectable on-the-fly subtitles? Tvix and PCH had this 3 years ago.

Im really loving the new firmware.

My only remaining complaints are i would still like to see better music interface, juke box support, i dont know if dune has taken a look at musicnizer, something like that with album art and gui would be nice.

And of course source direct output! I think everyone wants that.

Two other things.

WIth animation enabled on 1080p/24 the gui is extremely slow, i had to turn animation off and its lightening quick, this is just when im outputting 1080/24, maybe it can be fixed.

And i also would like to see ycbcr 4:2:2 output for blu ray, have not checked but im guessing its still 4:4:4.

Lucky you! None of my playback problems were solved. Still stuttering some .TS files, Rewind still not working on .TS and DVD playback. Still having artifacts and glitches on mkv files and DVD images, randomly. Sometimes, these glitches are not random at mkv files, and I know these are encoding problems at the file, but the very same files, when played at my Tvix 6500A with 1.5.19 FW, only shows the glitch at the very same problem point, but after that the Tvix keeps playing it, while my Dune HD max freezes image, or stop playing the file completely.
I hoped this new FW to fix this, but not. Why a three year old player deals better with some encoding problems than the ultimate Dune product?
Still dreaming about external non same filename selectable on-the-fly subtitles, and also still dreaming about a configuration option to set the default value of the deinterlacer.

Completely new graphical interface.
- New background image, new icons, more advanced graphics for all GUI

Are the audiosync problems with some MKV's finally solved? No fix for my audio sync problems, still have to manually add -0,22s delay for every file type other than ts. Hopefully the next update with new Sigma SDK will finally get rid of this problem.

Otherwise, I simply love the new GUI. Love it. Though had to turn off the animation and change the tab look navigation to old plain type. Nice to see that while they introduce new features, it's also possible to use the old options. The GUI seems to be also a little faster than previously, anybody else noticed this or is it only in my head?

A little suggestion: it would be nice to choose the icon/list type options in the setup menu for which the A button changes the view type. If you want to mainly switch between two view types, now you have to scroll through all the view types.

I also tried the CD player function, which is reportedly improved. And it clearly is, much faster. However the front display shows the total play time of the CD, not the play time of current track or the track number, both of which are more important information. Not that I use CDs anymore...

Two thumbs up HDI, very nicely done.

Sorry ddoming73... maybe I did not catch the full picture, but why should we ask HDI to put effort in implementing a thing that would reduce the capability of the DUNE in terms of overall compatibility ? If the DUNE does not intercept the signal in CINAVIA protection it will never block any playback of title. That's exactly what we'd love from our DUNE module. A CINAVIA suport would reduce that flexibility. Unless I did not understand well what a CNAVIA protection is.. I'd say that should that support be put in place I would jump to the previous firmware :)

Hello,

I agree with you, this is something that i don't like in my Dune Base 3.0.
It is so hard to implement this features?(NATIVE VIDEO OUTPUT)

My meaning was that it would be a BAD thing for it (Cinevia) to be included, as it would mean problems for those of us who rip their DVDs to watch them...

Nice improvements. Many thanks to the developers.

Anyhow still a few wishes:

Gapless playback of video files. Have a couple of recordings split at 2 GB boundaries and always have this 15 second black screen between the parts. Now that we have gapless playback of audio files why can't we have the same with video files?

Sending a WOL (Wake on LAN) packet when Dune tries to connect to a network share but the server is down. Ideally Dune should check availability (probably sending a ping) and if the server doesn't respond, send WOL and wait for the server to appear, then connect to the server. This would be especially useful for NFS shares. Currently the Dune freezes (needs a forced reboot), when the NFS server is down.

Adjustable buffering for live streams. I can play TV live streams from a server with DVB receivers over my LAN. It works via an m3u playlist, containing the URLs for the TV stations. With VLC on the PC it takes about 3 seconds to start the playback. On the Dune it takes about 15 seconds. I assume the Dune is playing save and buffers a lot of content before it starts the playback. This is fine for playing a video file, but it is inappropriate for zapping between live streams. I'd prefer to have an occasional dropped frame at the beginning of a live stream, if it would start playing after 3 seconds instead of 15 s.

Hmmm, can anyone tell me, how to change the order of network share icons in the sources list? They always appear in the order they were created.

Beside new graphical interface, I like new function in HDI Firmware Update (110511_2007_beta):
1. Add widget with weather, temperature, date, time
2. Add to favorites" function can be quickly called by "D" on remote
3. When playing an pack audio file, is there is an associated CUE-sheet file, the CUE-sheet file is automatically used.

If this firmware has the join picture function for 3D film (SBS or under/over 3D film) as Popcorn C200, I think it's the best HD player.

I also have a Dune HD Center and only have the default skin, too. Doesn't make sense in my opinion unless the other skins came with massive animation effects that the old CPU couldn't handle, but I don't think that's the case.
I like the skin, though, since I compare it against the old graphics. Would love to try a few other skins, but I guess I'll have to wait.
Other than that, I only noticed that the action associated with ENTER changed to "create playlist" while I had it set to "play file" only before.
Need to do some testing whether Bluray playback improved and try out whether it can cope with multi-angle DVDs now (which is used on a Top Gear DVD I recently purchased, in case you're wondering :).

Very nice firmware and interface! Sadly it won't fix my handshake issue's with mine Rotel RSX 1550 receiver. When i start an blu-ray the screen goes most of the time to black. I need to switch sources or turn on OSD to get the video back! This is also the only reason i'm thinking to sell my Dune. Rotel says it's an Dune problem, Dune says it is an Rotel problem. The problem is I like both!

It is an fact that the Rotel is very picky with HDMI sources. The problem is when you start an blu-ray the player switch for an short time the HDMI interface off and on. By that way the Rotel lost it's sync.

My Sony blu-ray player does not have this issue.

Yes there is.

First annoying thing i've found.

Who in their right mind came up with the idea of making the Enter button act the same as the play button ?

Is there no way now to play a single file in a directory ?
I always used the enter for this, but so far i haven't found a way to do so with the new FW.

did you try with the PLAY button ? On my BASE3 is working.

Are you talking about full blown commercial Blu-ray players (major brands) or "media players" that have Blu-ray ROMs built-in? I have yet to see a single media player that has this feature.

Maybe there is a limitation in the chipset that does not allow this on "media players" but allows it on Blu-ray players with no file playback capabilities.

Hello,
I was talking about full blu-ray players, and i firmly believe it is possible also in premium media players like Dune.
As i understand Realtek chips don't have this problems, and i think and many believes is an inferior chip compared with Sigma Design.

I tried a bluray yesterday even with DTS MA i had the amp way above average just to hear the dialogue and sound FX.

in regards to audio delay guys try the following setting and see if it helps.

1080p60 with 24/50/60 (switching on) this has helped my delay issue.

Same here with DTS MA audio volume - very much quieter than it was. Other than that, it's a nice firmware upgrade.

One little trick I learned for native blu ray output anyway.

Set the player to 1080i, then enable auto framerate 1080p/24/50/60.

This will send native blu rays that are 1080i (some are) it will output 1080i for them, and 1080/24 for the rest of blu ray movies.

Since I dont watch dvd i guess that is all i needed for source direct. Now 1080i blu rays can be passed on to my scaler for deinterlacing.

They still really need to correct the ycbcr 4:4:4 output though, it really bothers me its outputting the incorrect color space, ycbcr 4:2:2 is proper. This is embarrassing it has not been fixed, makes me wonder how much they know about blu ray output.

Just got home from a long weekend and booted up the dune.

Saw a FW update, heck let's install.

I'm flabbergasted here, but finally after more than a year of complaining we have gapless CD playback.

Finally, may 14th, the day that the Dune players became REAL multimedia players.

Haven't done a lot of testing so far, but gapless cd playback was a real showstopper for me.

At the moment i'm not able to test it myself but gapless CD playback is great. How about gapless playback for MP3/FLAC files? Is it also fixed?

Hi,

first - i like the new style. Its a step in the right direction. Some people will say, i want morge technical stuff but for me - i am a "eye human" - i think a good gui belongs to a good mediaplayer.

Sometimes i wish, HDI would make it easier to share the knowledge of making own backgrounds or own icons and all that stuff so good skinners (they are not always technicfreaks) can make good skins for the dune.

On some mediaplayers you only have to throw a jpg of a cover to an folder and it will be shown. No need to edit a folder.txt oder just adding an URL for an radio station.... thats much easier than to edit .txt. files ;)

But anyway - i am looking forward to the design an skin page. Maybe there will be all informations and some other new skins will follow.

Have a nice day
Andreas

It's impossible (by the specs of mp3) to get mp3 playback really gapless.

Listen very carefully and you'll hear that it's not gapless...
For real gapless playback switch to par example flac, ogg-vorbis.

+1 on having default skin only on the HD center. Other than that this firmware seems to be working OK for me so far.

I'm quite impressed that Dune produce a firmware package to update all their players, Recent firmware updates have given a new lease of life to my HD Center. This continued after sales support means that Dune will be at the top of my list for the next media player I buy (probably to replace my TViX 6500).

Summary of NATIVE VIDEO OUTPUT votes:

I see in the list of upcoming features a lot of wonderful functionality. I would like to request one additional feature not listed. Native video output. For those of us that use external scalers this is a key feature and something that causes a loss of video quality in the current offering.

My Dune connects to an Edge Duo which is at the heart of my A/V system. Every component goes through the Edge where the video is scaled before being passed to my Pioneer Pro-150FD. Currently there is no way that I can find to disable the scaler on the Dune itself so video is being processed twice with sometimes bad effects.

+1 - I have a DVDO DUO ;)

Hello,

I agree with you, this is something that i don't like in my Dune Base 3.0.
It is so hard to implement this features?(NATIVE VIDEO OUTPUT)

Thanks

YES YES YES !!!!
This would be a fantastic option :eek::eek:

+1 mine goes through my Lumagen and i think this is what caused the audio display at 24hz 1080p setting.

with this option i can use reprocessing feature on the Luimagen which is the same as pref on the DVDO products.

anyone else noticed an audio/volume decrease in movies?

After using the new firmware some more, I haven't found any serious issues, but one thing annoys me.
When the player (HD Center) has freshly started (power on/off via the button on the front), then it is possible to create favorites, but once it was in standby, it no longer works and it doesn't even show the ones I had created before.
Full reboot and they show up again and I can create additional ones.
System storage is connected, albeit through a powered USB hub.

I guess that's the new behaviour of the enter button, which now acts like the play button and creates a playlist of the folder instead of opening/playing just the selected item. However you can restore the old behaviour in the setup menu. That's described in the release notes.

Seems, after some testing it has something to do with the list place of a movie in the folder. If it's after another file, dune tries to play the first file available, even if it can't play it 'ex.*.aai') Thus Dune says it can't play any file and the playlist is empty. The only way around this is to press play so it generates a playlist and choose SKIP File from the menu!

Is there a way so the Dune starts with the movie right away?

Make your picture on good format (1920 x 1080) with good name (bg.jpg)
Copy this file / Open the original zip of Koti and paste the picture in the good folder

Had the same problem.
If you extract the folder you get a folder for example dune_skin_darthvader
After replacing the bg.jpg and repacking it with winrar (zip mode) the zip was unusable to my dune hd center.
If i double click on the zip file in windows you see the dune_skin_darthvader folder.
With the original zip file of koti you see the folders within the dune_skin_darthvader folder.

So how to solve this....
Replace the bg.jpg in an unpacked dune_skin_darthvader folder
Open the dune_skin_darthvader folder (for example) in winrar.
select all the folders in that folder and zip it
(I used --> zip -->save only no compression in winrar).

Worked 4 me.

Integrated Media Library Management (Movie/CD/TV Serie) into the system so we can just add file(s) to attached HDD and ask Dune to get cover & synopsis from web and update our library. Hence, eliminate the need to complete these tasks on PC/Mac(USB/eSATA attached HDD)before HDD is usable on Dune (since not everyone has network attached-HDD)

If someone successfully succeeded to update the DUNE_FOLDER.TXT file to the new interface of the Dune, please be kind and upload it.

Thank you,

Flavius

Its always good news when a new firmware emerges.

But... Its sad to see that still there is no way to select a subtitle file with a different file name "on the fly". This was the most useful subtitle feature my old Tvix 6500A offered, a feature which existed from the very first time I used it (The 6500A), almost three years ago. And my super-duper Dune hd max still lacks.

It seems that the external subtitle can be achieved only with bluray "lite". The bad news is bluray lite has no fancy menu for bluray, like it was for 6500.

It was same for me but i found how to do ; it's only one idea but it works for me
Make your picture on good format (1920 x 1080) with good name (bg.jpg)
Copy this file / Open the original zip of Koti and paste the picture in the good folder

I don't understand why it don't works when i create a new zip file but it's ok if i modify the original zip so, it's good

If someone has a better idea, thanks to give here

And really thanks to Koti for custom skin, more fast than HDI :-)

Yes the same thing for me, I modify the original zip with Winrar and it work !

Koti thanks for the skins! :)

Can you make one with tansparent icons?

It would be great if we could have one place to upload our custom themes, backgrounds, icons etc. for everyone to see and download if they wish (in HDI Artwork maybe?)!

Am I doing something wrong or there's no more original icon labels when creating shortcut (eg. Zappiti)?
As I can see shortcuts are now in favorites tab and the only option is "Add to favorites".

Still no audio if connected the HD DUO / previously Prime 1.0 using component for video and HDMI for audio...for other format other than iso files i.e. mkv, avi, mpg etc

using either bitstrem or decode by the Dune....audio from bd.iso plays fine

what could be the problem...also, it cannot play my Avatar.iso (HK version) which is playble using my Prime BD 1.0....

I've got playback issues with WVC1 files on this new firmware.

Mediainfo for the file's give's me an overall bitrate of 6mb for these files.
But when playing back on the Dune with the latest FW the bitrate goes through the roof.
Around 24mbps with spike's of over 40mbps.

This results in stutter for me during playback.
The first sturrer is noticable about 6 minutes into the file.
And after playing 10 minutes it's just to horrible to watch.
Stopping the player and restarting the file fixes the problem for a few minutes but then it starts again.

Playback of these WMV files goes flawless on other devices, and it goes flawless on the previous FW's as well.

Playing back the same file's with x264 encoding works flawless.
Anybody else having issues with WVC1 (WMV-HD) files ?

hi,

any chance you can upload the file or even a long enough sample and i can test it for you on mine to see if the results are the same or different.

I have tested high bitrate files which work fine 40+ Mbit/s.

Anybody else having issues playing BD/J folders?
I tried another test with Platoon 25th Anniversary, does not work neither...
this is really annoying since the dune base 3.0 HD media player cannot play BR structure folders!

Mmmhhh. I tried to play the Sorcerer BR (26GB) and it worked perfectly with my Base 3.0
Are you sure that all the protections have been properly removed while creating you rip ?

Ok, I have done some further testing.

I copied both BR structure folders (Green day and Platoon) from the HFS external hard drive to an NTFS external hard drive, and they both started to play fine...

Why do the files play with a windows HDD and not on a mac os x HDD?
Is it because the Dune cannot write on the HFS drives?

Interesting isnt it :-)

Koti Skins are great, the only thing im not crazy about is the advertising of the site at the bottom of the backgrounds, the backgrounds are really nice, but it looks tacky with the advertising of a website on the bottom.

just remove it, I did - crop the image removing the advertising and then resize the image back to 1920x1080 - job done.

I changed the transformer background for a better/darker one so i can read the menu's clearly.

The only thing i noticed was i lost the weather widget on mine after applying the theme.

Hi hidalgo,
is anywhere mentioned that the Dune reads HFS? Even NTFS (at least writing) is quite new for the Dune. You could attache the HFS hdd to your MAC and then use SAMBA or NFS.

i put my HFS+ formatted HDDs directly over a Quickport Adapter to the Dune.

Well, the Dune works pretty well with the HFS drives, I can play Mkv, Dvd, M2ts files with no problem. Using Dunex application for the movies wall selection works pretty well too.
I could play also some BR folders files but not the ones that are BD/J. So it could be the problem is due to the Dune not writing on HFS systems?

A few Q's:

1. is it possible to have the weather in Fahrenheit?
2. is it possible to have the clock in 12hr?
3. is it possible to make the icons smaller?
4. is it possible to remove the optical drive icon?

Otherwise, such an enormous leap!

Thanks Dune!

The beta firmware seems to have caused some sort of corruption on the book marking. I’ve set mine to resume video playback and on some it jumps and stutters around and when playback does start it’s usually failing to start where I left of last. Has anyone else noticed this? Where does it store the bookmarks as clearing both the flash and USB memory makes no difference?

Hi!

How is you drive formatted? You just say HFS, but maybe you mean HFS+?
Journaled or not?

My Smart D1 is completely incapable of reading any HFS+ formatting, every reading or copy will inevitably fail. I can see the contents of the drive and list files, but that's all. At some point, early, generally, it will fail.

Thanks for your tips!

I also need a 4:2:2 option on the dune. I wonder how best to get their attention on this all important issue? I have an Isf calibrated Pioneer Kuro KRP-500A and this runs best when offered a 4:2:2 signal. 4:4:4 mode loses picture punch or depth, even from my oppo bdp-83. I have an oppo bdp-93 still in its box waiting for me to finish a looming work deadline :)

I also have ac3 audio sync issues. A Bluray that has bad sync issues is "Bullet". I am using a Denon AV amp wired via HDMI. This bluray has no lossless audio, that's why.

If these two issues are solved I will be a happy bunny.

Hello,

I hope that people from Dune understand the importance of such feature,
SOURCE DIRECT or 4:2:2 COLORSPACE option.
Like i said before is the most important feature in a media player device. There is anybody out there to tell us if it is possible?(from DUNE)
I saw that many from us want this feature badly.

Thanks

Thanks for confirming as it puts my mind at rest that it's a firmware rather than hardware issue.

I looked in the old firmware release notes and to clear stored bookmarks you need to reset under settings>general. It is a bit of a pain as it wipes all other user settings (IP settings, Audio & Visual settings, Network folder settings etc.).

However, it was OK for a while after a full reset but the problem has now started again so I've turned off resume for the video for now (under playback settings).

I just bought the Smart D1 a few days ago, I'm coming from WD TV Live (which is very nice as well). The better picture quality of the Smart D1 was the reason to change, and I can say the picture is definitely sharper.

However, when I bought it I updated directly to the latest stable version, and used this 2 days, before I updated to the new beta firmware.

I have only DVD-Iso-files on 4TB HDs, connected with USB, and for both firmware versions everything works fine, but of course the new beta firmware looks much more nice.

I have only one Iso-file that cannot be played (WD TV played it). The file seems to be ok, but the Smart D1 shows an error message: "Wiedergabeliste ist leer" (what means playlist is empty)
Also in the listview it does not show a disk (like all other files) but a sheet of paper.
When I check the file with the Smart D1 (readtest) it is ok, no error message.

Further there are error messages for starting some radio stations etc. (mentioned in this forum berore); problems to access the XX server (internet connection is fine).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have all my movies (over 600) sorted in directories (like a, b, c, d, etc...), and It would be great to implement other options of "finding the movie", like in the WD TV.

- It should be possible to show me all movies at once (without the directories).

- In WD TV I can change the overview about my movies from "latest/recent" (last films I watched), to date (shows me folders with date; which movie I added at what date).

Especially the option to sort by date I'm missing. this was a very nice feature from WD TV. So it was possible to check my movies regarding to date it was added to my harddrives (like last friday I added these 3 movies, 3 days before these 2 movies etc.). Maybe it;s possible to add a feature like this in the future.

Maybe it's possible to have this option when installing external software like Zappiti or Yadis? I never tried this (I just own the Smart Di for several days).
Which of these external software is the best...?

Thanks
Markus (from Germany, so sorry about my english...)

Downloaded the 2007 upgrade a few days ago, and it worked fine. But noticed that large mp4 files started stuttering, so tried to revert to 1222 previous FW. Got halfway through the 'upgrade' and it hung. Had to shut down. Result: now the Dune HD Max won't start at all. Gets halfway through the initialising and then aborts. The buggy network browser isn't a new "feature". In some cases it shows the shared folders always, in some systems almost always and in some networks never. Networks work in mysterious ways...

So you are telling me there are "gremlins" in my network and it is as it is? Surely there must be a reason for it? Havent been able of accessing the network since the update. It worked for maybe two days and then gone after that.

Anyone got any tip on what i can try?

Hi,
I wouldn´t blame HDI for the network problem. I would blame MS. Windows as a part from a network is sick IMHO. Even with only windows PC in the network it can take ages before they know each other. It got worse with W7 because MS introduced something new there. I think it is called become part of a home network. I think they try to build something easy similar to the Apple but up to now they failed.

Perhaps you try this. Start your Dune, search the net 1 or 2 times, wait half an hour and search again. As I already said the master browser of a windows network takes ages before he knows the network even if there are only 2 or 3 PCs in the net.

I would blame HDI for not introducing a NFS network browser.

It is true. I have 3 computers, 2 running Vista and 1 running W7. All 3 can see / access Dune and Dune can see / access all 3 computers / shared folders. This is the maximum I can do. I am not able to make the 3 computers to access each other. Only the Public Folder on each computer can be accessed from the other 2 computers. Other shared folders you can see but you can not access/enter. Microsoft is the master of confusion!

Regarding network problems with Vista/Win 7 and XP I found certain firewalls worked OK with 1 pc or combination of pc but didnt work with others even if you manually added ip addresses and configured permissions if you completely disable the firewall ypu may have access across the network. I had problems with Outpost and Zone alarm but found the PC tools firewall works on my XP and Win 7 PCs dont have vista any more hope that helps.

I'm confused about the weather widget as well. I have entered the name of my city - but every other day another location within a radius of approx. 100km from here is displayed.

Yes, all computers are member of the same Homegroup. I also tryied the following: renamed all computers to have the same name and put the same password to all 3. Then disabled the passwords. Everything it was useless. I do not want to continue here, as this is a thread of something else.

So far everything works fine, and I really like the Dune Smart D1 with the new firmware.

I just tried out my first Blu-ray iso files, and I found some small issues (I never tried BD-iso files with the former firmware).

1. When playing a BD, the menue does not look (that nice) like when playing a DVD, it looks different (older style...).

2. The zoom does not work when playing a BD, but according to the manual it should (this is a VERY important feature for me, because I like to zoom a little bit; like with DVD to 1,05x what's appr. in the middle between original and full zoom). I can zoom via my Onkyo AVR, but only full zoom, and this is too much (to much of the right and left side of the movie is missing).

===>>> PLEASE integrate the possibility to zoom the BD like a DVD. <<<===

3. When playing a BD, it's not possible to jump with a "number" (like 5 for exsample) to chapter 5. Not an important thing, but I just want to mention it does not work.

4. When restarting a DVD, the Smart D1 does not start from the beginning, but from the last point I watched.

This is nice, but it would even better if I would be asked if I want to start from the beginning or from last point.

When starting a BD, it always start from the beginning, what is not that nice.

These are just a few small issues that I discovered, maybe that can be fixed at following update(s). :D

Update...:

Screen saver does not work during watching a BD , it does with DVD

Loudness control does not work at all, it's shown on the TV screen but loudness is always the same (at least with my configuration via HDMI).

You can set your play preferences in the setup options.

There are seperate options for Dvd, Blu-Ray & Music. You can either choose resume from last point or play from the start for each individually.

Hope that helps.

what menu do you mean? The menu of the BD or DVD are on the disc and the player only has to show it. So if you have an ugly BD menu you have an ugly BD:-)

...in this case I don't mean the menu itsself, but the parts of the menu which appear when I press "info" for exsample, or fast forward.

If you press "info" during watching a DVD / BD the infobox looks different (in BD not that nice like in DVD modus).

...no (or at least I could not find it.).

I found these option at setup/.../Bookmarks, but there I have this option to choose only for

- video
- audio
- dvd

But unfortunately no Blu-ray

I have them all on "yes", but Blu-ray still starts from the beginning every time (no big thing, but it should be possible to choose as well).

It looks like the whole Blu-ray thing is not (yet) really integrated in the new (beta) firmware, since the "menu" looks diffenrent, and the option to resume is missing as well.

Maybe in the next regular update (no beta) everything will be fixed.

And the resume from last point settings should have 3 options, Yes, No, or "Prompt User", as do most media players. If I play a DVD or BD which I had previously partially played, I would prefer to be prompted as to whether to resume it or play from beginning. Blueskies...

Here it is still not working! I still have no gapless audio playback.
I'm I missing something here? Musicfiles are on my NAS, used CDex for conversion to MP3.

Fredd_1001
07-06-11, 23:12
It's impossible (by the specs of mp3) to get mp3 playback really gapless.
And don't say that winamp does it...
Listen very carefully and you'll hear that it's not gapless...
For real gapless playback switch to par example flac, ogg-vorbis.

Tried FLAC, allso no gapless playback!
WTF how difficult can this be?!

mikjoel

Create one big flac file and use it with cue sheet then you can switch between the different songs and you have gapless playback. - This works well wit the latest beta firmware.

Hi everyone,

I do like the new interface overall, and mkv chapters was a sorely missed feature, but I have one big issue: I don't mind the fact that shortcuts are not in the same screen as the available shares, but I would like the option to start on the shortcuts screen instead of the shares menu. This would allow a direct access to the MyMovies indexes and would improve WAF a lot... I had the Mymovies shortcut on the main screen before, so it was easy to find, but now you have to go to a different screen. Not good.

Otherwise, ABSOLUTE TOP PRIORITY is source direct YCbCr 4-2-2 output. Totally agree this is the biggest flaw in the player when used in a home cinema, especially for users with a scaler.

Finally, one vote for WOL, which would allow us to leave less frequently used servers off all the time. At the moment, I schedule my Qnap boxes to wake up at 7pm and shudown at 1am, but I coud easily leave one or two permanently off as I rarely need them.

I'm glad there are a few of us that recognize the importance of source direct and 4:2:2 colorspace. It's the only thing keeping me from labeling the Dune as near perfect.

Today, I decided to tune in a favorite Internet Radio station on my Dune

found that Radiotime and SHOUTcast applications are empty. What gives?

Will the Internet radio station applications be replaced with the next stable firmware verion of (110511_2007_beta)? This is very disappointing.

Is this really going to be included for the Dune?

JonL

Maybe, just maybe, this is something that the Sigma is NOT capable of doing. Are there any other Sigma based players that already has this capability?

The SageTV HD300 does it. It's got the Sigma chip, hasn't it?

At least, DVD is 4:2:0 and a 4:2:2 output introduces fewer colorspace conversions than 4:4:4.

Love the new GUI.

I am experiencing a few small problems however:

There is no audio on .MOV files (recorded via Sony video camera). Audio works when files are played by other devices.
When set to (Auto) the default location for the weather widget shows a different state in my country. I know I can set this manually, however it seems that the local radio stations within the RadioTime application are bound to the automatic location. Hence my local radio stations are interstate radio stations.

I am hoping that these issues may by easy to resolve. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I dont think so...... it be only a very very tiny number of people with 'scalers'. I think the output looks fantastic as it is and looks identical to my Oppo 83 on my HD projector. I would rather they concentrate on issues that effect the operation of the unit for the vast majority of users first.

Bluray is 4:2:0 but conversion to 4:2:2 is lossless. Conversion to 4:4:4 isn't, and possibly means a needless roundtrip to RGB.

It's the one feature that blocks many buyers from getting this player for a home cinema. Many people aren't even considering media players for this reason, and stick to good conventional players. The Dune checks all the boxes, except that one.

I really hope they do something about it, it would really set it apart from the rest.

Even SD material like 576i/480i looks like the Oppo 83? Well, the Oppo 83 has very good scaling chips inside. I'm sure it wins hands down in that department.

EDIT: Also, it's not just for people with scalers. A/V receivers, HD projectors and LCD/plasma displays are getting good scaling and deinterlacing chips inside, so a large number of customers would benefit from this.

Myself, I'm using an HD300 because of that feature only. If Dune gets this implemented, I'll turn to my Smart D1 instead.

Ah, ok, now i get it.
So it is loosless.
Is the Sigma Chip in the Dune a good idea to do this?
Does it need much calculation power to convert?

Hi Admin,

I had DUNE HD BASE 3.0. I just flashed to the lastest firmware, 110511_2007_beta. But I detected the bug from the stable firmware, 110225_1222, was still occured when I'm watching DVD (which stocked on an external disk): the picture and sound were freezing about 10 secondes, and the movie started. It's very annoying. I hope this bug will be fixed by the next firmware released.

You need windows 7 for the latest version of mymovies (recommended with the dune) but older version 3.x works with vista.

Mymovies and the dune is a great combination, especially if you use the ipad as a remote/interface.

In my Dune max broken... can I install again a firmware?

Thanks for your help

Firmware recovery procedure:
- Copy a firmware DFF file into "dune_firmware.dff" file at the top
level of a USB flash drive (preferably use exactly the same
firmware version as was attempted to install during the failed
upgrade).
- Switch the player off (using the power button on the player).
- Attach the USB flash drive with "dune_firmware.dff" file to the
player.
- Switch the player on.
- The player should detect the the USB flash drive and automatically
start firmware recovery procedure. You should see "RECOVER", "CHK
0", "CHK 1",..., "CHK 99", "REC 0", "REC 1", ..., "REC 99", "OK",
"EJECT STORAGE AND REBOOT" messages on the front panel of the
player.
- On an error, a message "ERR ..." is displayed on the front penal
of the player. "..." is the error code. Possible error codes:
- "ERR Ann", "ERR Bnn", "ERR Cnn": A problem with
the "dune_firmware.dff" file: the file is invalid/broken, the
file corresponds to a wrong player model, the file can not be
read from the USB drive, etc.
- "ERR Dnn", "ERR Enn": A problem during data copying (e.g. the
USB drive disconnected during data copying).
- Detach the USB flash drive from the player, and delete the
"dune_firmware.dff" file from it (do not attach the USB flash drive
with this file to the player when you switch the player on,
otherwise, the player will attempt to recover the firmware again).
- Switch the player off (using the power button on the player).
- Switch the player on.
- The recovered firmware should load in the usual way.
