View Full Version : Movie storage!!!
What would you guys do in my case?
I own a PC (good for me), a dvd writer, a dp-450 (so no ethernet) and about 250 differnt movies.
The thing is, I've got these movies for a long time yet and I would like to rewrite them so I can enhance them in the same time.
Should I all write them on DVD's or buy myself a BIG harddisk to store them on and work with a few DVD+RW to watch the movie on my player?
What would you do?
Maybe you could compare the price / mb for different sorts of media...
MtPOI
A big disk would cause about 200 Euro.
External even more.
DvD Media is available about 1.50 Euro.
Each DvD can hold 6 single cd movies.
For the 200 euro you'd spend on the disk you would be able to burn:
133 DvD's for a total of 798 movies.
Whenever you want to watch a movie, you just need to pick the DvD
and put it in the player where otherwise you will have to burn all the time.
I would suggest, storing them on DvD is the best choice in combination with DP-450.
Same for DP-500 or other networked players, so you can watch a movie
while the pc dos not to keep running and does not have to be shutdown after playing the movie.

BIG harddisk
What would you do?
What about a tera disk http://www.lacie.com/fr/products/product.htm?id=10118
If one never moves it, that would be ok.
I think it's a little to expensice though...
Inside it's "seperate" disks combined in a Raid0 (Stripe) on a IDE Raid Controller. Just like the one of 500 MB contains 2 disks.
Bad thing about this if one disk fails, all data is gone and for 1 Terrabyte, that can be a disaster.
It's also the weight (5 Kilo)
:_0
But nice to have...
This can be done in a pc for about 600 Euro while this box costs 1250 Euro. Ok, it's a huge size but the box and firewire and usb, just not worth the difference of 650 Euro.
Only an option if you rally work with movies, not just download and watch :-)

But is the quality of th e DVD media good enough for storage during several years? Because that is a big reason why I rewrite the cd's to DVD's, because I read once that many cd's lose there data after several time.
Hi Spoed...
The better brands will not loose their data within the next 20 years or so...
These brands are more expensive but ok...
Same risk as having your hdd failed, surely with a big disk...
A failing dvd will loose 4 gb, a failing disk hundreds of them...
It's making a choice one way or the other.
DvD (Pay a little more for infiniti dvd-R or +R and you'll be fine)
It's one of the best brands to use. They cost about 2 to 2.5 Euro a piece.

Realy only depends on what angle you look at it.
