Hi all. I really know jack about this sort of thing and am trying to learn. Previously, I used my PS3 connected to my PC via Network, but have had lots of trouble. Mostly no audio issues or inability to play subtitles. Many times the video cannot be decoded. This is with videos provided by my wife's family in Vietnam (Korean dramas not available here, etc).

Anyway, not long ago I saw someone with a egreat R200 playing anything he threw at it and was surprised. Wow. Cool. Only problem is, buying it in the U.S. from a reputable source. That's a big one.

I've looked at numerous alternatives, but need guidance. What I want is this...

Ability to place a hard drive internally and link up externally.

HDMI output with DD5.1 support (not just simple stereo). Component output would be nice, nut is not a must.

Can play any MKV or MP4 or AVI, etc.

Subtitle support.

What's not important are Netflix, Amazon, YouTube, etc. I couldn't care less about that. I have a PS3 if I want to connect to Netflix.

IMHO, this can meet your requirements as it can accommodate a 2.5"" internal hdd as well as connection external usb hdd.
