And yet another beta release. Will there ever be a new stable release or does Dune keeps on experimenting with unfinished releases?

What is wrong with their heads?

Firmware is filling up with CRAP like accuweather, twitter, facebook, etc., while bugs still exist.
And what's worse - this new CRAP cannot be removed or hidden!
I don't know anyone who actually uses this junk on their Dune. They just seem to think that every media player HAS to have these functions. No common sense.

And support is useless. Not ONE ticket in the last year has even been answered.
Dune players: great
Dune support: sucks.

Some usable FlashLite commands, some colors to skin with, some new parameters in dune_folder.txt extensions...(Since XBMC goes HD Audio with the new nightly build Audio Engine, Mediaplayer Manufactors will lose ground.) Sorry Dune, you dont hear the words of your customers. Cant be that hard to build a cool Audio Player, or let the community make one if you are to weak.
just my 2 cents

Gennoise
04-06-12, 06:37
I think it's not such a bad idea to rely on the community for building a good jukebox interface.

In recent firmware versions they laid the foundations for the developer community so that we can write our own software that integrates with the player navigator.
Agreed, we don't get a solid jukebox experience out of the box, but we're not forced to use the crappy standards either.

A good example would be the Dune Flash Interface which you can find somewhere on this forum. But I think that the PHP plugin API, which integrates with the main menu, is also maturing with several improvements being made with every new firmware version. The new facebook/twitter/accuweather/... applications prove that there is potential for something big.

Guys don't you get the point? These new apps are just little gimmicks to make people notice what the plugin system can do. They are there to show off what the player is capable of doing.

If I ever get around to mastering PHP, I'll make you a decent jukebox interface. ;)

I wonder, if there will be ever released a new stable Firmware version for my D1. The last stable one is now 1 year ago. Many improvements have been made, but a new stable version has never been released since version 110606_1315.

Gennoise
04-06-12, 11:23
^ Taken from the firmware changelog page for version 120329_2012:

NOTE: This is a minor update to 120202_1544_beta. This firmware version has
"stable-candidate" status: although this firmware is currently available as
"beta" version, it will be updated to "stable" status soon.

I think that means unless a critical bug appears over the next few weeks, this will be labeled as stable without further changes.

Looking at the changelog it seems to be a transitory firmware to a bigger one. Just the fact that you can now add web links into a dune_folder could open a lot of doors or an automated jukebox I guess...

Gennoise

You put the media url in a dune_folder.txt file or any supported playlist file.

People who can't upgrade using the automatic upgrade: try downloading the firmware file from the website, then installing it from a USB stick (or internal storage if your device has that). If anything, it will atleast save you tons of bandwidth on failed attempts.

I would suggest doing a hard reset before upgrading (forgot the instructions but they should be easy to find).

If that doesn't work, the emergency firmware recovery should do the trick. To do that, rename the firmware file to "dune_firmware.dff" and put it in the root directory of a USB pendrive, plug it in and do a cold boot. This will start the firmware recovery procedure, which is basically a fail-safe firmware flash.

I really want to know about wy my horoscope for this week!!!!!
A lot of crap in a language that i can only understand with Google translate.

It is a MEDIA player and not a game or weather or browser player.
I do not use twitter or facebook but ok some people will use it.
Youtube is nice because you can bring a lot of new media to your media player.
Now we need a nice music jukebox for the music on my server. I think we are waiting for this for several years.
Awsome would be application for spotify. Again you bring a lot of new media to your media player.

post from Graham Meyers on AVF (he's UK Dune reseeler) :

This is still beta. The guys in Moscow released this unilaterally. I've been having a chat today with the Sales Director and he's read them the riot act (again). There is a fuller, much richer firmware due out, with lots more features and the awaited bug fixes. We are supposed to be coordinating the main release so we know the features etc before/as its released so we can better help with any questions. There is an actual release date in mind for this new firmware and the distributors will get it about 2 weeks before that date so we know what to expect. I've been striving for this and Dune have agreed. What Moscow keep doing is making things look disjointed and they have agreed that releasing things in this manner isnt the correct way to do things.

All it does is annoy people because the betas dont contain the bug fixes everybody is waiting for and just hints at the features that due in the next release.

as for jukebox features. I know they want to add it, but I'm not sure if its in this release. But I stress I am only aware of some of the headline features/apps that are coming; not everything.

So definitively this is just a background firmware and everybody should wait for the final one...

To be fair to Graham he hasn't actually promised anything. All he has done is pass on the information that Dune have told him. It is then Dune that have broken the promises by failing to release firmware to their own schedule, or simply not adding promised bug fixes or features.
Graham is a Dune reseller and not part of the company. Therefore all he can (and does) do is pass on what he is told.

I know a lot of what he does already know he can't say as he is restricted by an NDA. But I'm sure he will be one of the first to pass on anything once Dune give him the ok to do so - he is a member on here and posts under the username my-HTPC.

I've a dune duo for a copple of weeks now.
Before I had a Ryan Play-on; you wouldn't believe what kind of betareleases they are capable of. Even the official releases were full of old and new bugs.
As far as I can say, the dune releases are with less bugs and it's easyer to turn back to an older one.

- Added EPG showing.
- Added support for DVB-T channels icons.
- DVB-T buffering and channel switching improvements.

What are these doing on a movie player box?

Music Player? Get a Sonos or a Squeezebox

Why no movie wall service? That would make perfect sense for a movie player box.

I do not think there are so many users of DVB-T. I use sometimes when the cable transmission is not working. This is happening once a year or so.
I think the real deal would be DVB-C (for Cable), and to have the possibility to record cable programs. CAM module would be also intereresting.

I have my Zappiti/yaDIS/MyMovies indexes stored on my WHS. With the newest firmware navigating these indexes is absurdly slow - maybe 40X slower. I reverted back to the prior firmware and all is well again.

Pretty strange - I use MyMovies, and with that beta the D1 is significantly faster, as it is as well when I am just purely browsing the directories on the server.

Why no movie wall service? That would make perfect sense for a movie player box.

Just my 10 cents

Probably because there would be a hord of people who whine and moan about how it looks or operates or the way it works.

As it is there are plenty to choose from and you can just install the one you like the best.

Few month ago I was in contact with Dune Support regarding a media library in the Firmware.

They answered that they are working on that but it's on early development stages at the moment...

I also asked for support for seamless branching / ordered chapters in mkv files.
It would be a great benefit. So you can have two editions of a movie lets
say the directors cut and theatrical cut in one mkv file. This would
also save some disc space because you don't need two mkv files anymore
for the two different versions of the movie.

Further information could be found here:

http://mod16.org/hurfdurf/?p=8
http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=66444

It would be nice if this feature of the matroska specification could be
integrated into a future firmware of the player.

Answer here was : Thank you for the suggestions.

Why should i get a Sonos or a Squeezebox?
I already paid for a Dune "MEDIA" palyer (and not just a movie player box) !!

Because a Dune is not a music player. You cannot search album, artist, track..
And besides hard to find a reason to have a 50" flatscreen running just to hear music.

Dune is a very good movie box. But for music, it is in my opinion a no-go. It is simply spoken not up to even decent requirements for a music player (gapless playback, support for cover art, lyrics, just to mention a few).

I was on the edge of trying this new firmware, but I think I will wait for "the proper one".
I don't need Shitbook support or weather app - I demand proper support for ASS subtitles (positioning and multiple subs on same timecode). Dune should focus on customer needs (forum) and not on fancy stuff marketing believes everyone needs!

Couldn't have said it better myself. Funny how they casually removed the 'feature request' page from their website, then put in tons of stuff that nobody even asked for.

nevermind the junks added on... somehow my prime3 now sounded better(especially when decoding multi-ch.) and pic. quality also a bit better too.. (definitely not in my imagination...ha ha) ... anyone experienced similar changes?

Hi,
Funny how they casually removed the 'feature requets' page from their website, then put in tons of stuff that nobody even asked for.
Funny that you can be so sure. Are you sure that there was no big russian distributor who asked for these features?

I mean none of these features were on that page up until the day it was removed.

http://web.archive.org/web/20101121204425/http://dune-hd.com/features

This archived page dates back to november 2010, you can see there are still tons of features in the voting results that are not in this firmware release.

We promise to take into account the result of this voting in our work on the new firmware releases.
The top priority features according to this voting will have the biggest priority in our work too.

Meh.

But the Dune is marketted as a MEDIA player, not a MOVIE player. So people who buy it, expect it to be good for movies, music, photos etc.

Also, the Dune as a stand alone unit, is not "a very good movie box" as you state. Just as it lacks support for cover art, indexing, etc with music, it also lacks the same things for movies. It has no native support for indexing and scraping, and it is only because of third party applications such as Yadis, Zapitti, DFI etc that it becomes useful.

You can also not search on year, director, titel, etc. within movies. So what's your point??

I am happy with this new release; RTSP support, yeayh!

For those of us using tvheadend, this is a giant step in the right direction! :)

Actually, I am quite happy with my dune player, and sure - I will never use the new apps on my dune for sure, but I don't care that they are there, maybe that will sell a few more dunes to someone who thinks this is something good.

I do not think there are so many users of DVB-T. I use sometimes when the cable transmission is not working. This is happening once a year or so.
I think the real deal would be DVB-C (for Cable), and to have the possibility to record cable programs. CAM module would be also intereresting.

When DVB-C support comes out, i'm buying it right away, this is for me the last step to a perfect player, Maybe its possible to hotwire the dvb-T stich to DVB-C ;)

Try this:
After installing the firmware, in weather widget, select the country in which you reside, for example: Italy or France ....

As mark has said earlier, I'm just a reseller :) I try to pass on as much info I can to keep people in the loop. Sometimes Dune get it wrong and back track, and I get shot as the messenger :(

Dune aren't just in the retail media streamer market. They are also a main player (pardon the pun) in the STB market and are bringing a lot of features that the STB market need/want into the retail products as they have a similar development cycle.

Set top boxes have to compete with Smart TVs, so apps are big at the moment hence why they are appearing in the Dune retail products. they've just announced the new TV201/401 which may not be retail version but STB only versions - I'm waiting for clarification for that. You'll notice there are more and more features that now in the dune_folder.txt facility that hint at more control from STBs etc.

- and then you can see how the weather is locally.
Another strategy: Look out of your window and check it by yourself.

To be hornest: Waste of good developers time to develop these kind of services.
I would instead expect the same persons to work on fulfillment of announced features of the product instead of adding useless features.

Good point. VERY good point!
I am so incredibly fed up with all those "cool" apps, be it for smartphones or whatever device. A whole bunch of crap, IMO.

I can imagine they'll add automatic facebook updates next, a new facebook status for everytime you watch a movie.

But let's not give them ideas. (wouldn't that be awesome markething though?)

I am not a big fan of Youtube, actually I am not a youtoube fan at all, but my son is. I tried to show to my son the new Youtube in the new firmware and he discovered that it is not possible to use the Dune HD Qwerty (this is the wireless remote control) in the Youtube search. You have to type using the stock remote control :-(. It looks that Dune HD Qwerty is a useless product

Youtube was already anvailible as standalone plugin build in flash, So i looks like Dune HD never invented that part of the new firmware.

Hi everyone, my Dune Smart D1 was upgraded with 120530 FW and now my blu-ray concerts freezes at BD menus (BD folders, not ISOs), and when I stoped the BD the display appears STOP, ERROR and RESTART, and than restarts the DUNE. I tryed to roll back the last FW i was using but the problem still continues.

I did a RESET and nothing happens, still with the problem!!!

Someone can help in this case, PLEASE. I am desperated!!!

I often use DVB-T, but after firmware update it's doesn't work. If I try to watch a channel is shown this message "Error: no reception". I try to re-do the channel search but it didn't found anything!! I downgrade to the previous FW: 150 channels are found and all works.
I hope that this bug will fix in "Stable" version...
