Announced by KiSS, the Dp-450 is already "End Of Life".
This means sales are no longer possible for this player.
Since the DP-1000 is available (DP-450 in small formwat) this can be considered as a normal move.
Why the DP-500 End Of Life?
Probably because the DP-1500 series is about to be released.
One batch to go and DP-500 will be end of life leaving too.
Again, this means development of the players will stop and not the support!!
What does it mean for future Firmware updates??

It should not change too much for future updates.
Support will be continued but we like KiSS to confirm that once again just to be on the safe side with our statements.
From my point of view, the development will go on (firmware updates, so software development), support will go on, but the production of the devices will stop.
I hope support will go on, otherwise I'll follow any class action against this damn K-I-S-S ! How is it possible ? I paied a lot of money for a player (original 508) with a lot of bugs and they put it out of production (I think they'll do it soon) before releasing a decent firmware !?!? :twisted: :evil: :twisted: :evil: I'm really disappointed with K-I-S-S and I'm discouraging everyone from buying their damn players until they releases a decent firmware !!!
There is a slight difference between out of production and out of support! As far as everybody told there will be new firmwares even after EOL. +

at least linksys doesn't seem to be much better. When asking them about technical details about there DVD player like supported server os, they tell you watch the website!

PS: not the way making new customers, at least not when you are asking for an official statement for mpegplayer!
I can understand many DP-508 customers are dissapointed today.
The new firmware release should be available before next week wednesday as promised by KiSS (14 day MAX they said last week).
The DP-508 is not being discontinued this year.
At the end of the year, when the 600 models start coming up, they will probably discontinue DP-508.
This however does not mean that the support will stop.
We all await the new dp-508 release...
Let's see if it get's here on time... :roll:

I got one and like it very mutch. Only the download speed to hp seems bad.
Try original DvD's...
Try copying a movie with PC-Link...
Try SVCD's
Try streaming music (mp3)
Many things are worse then previous release...

With the DP-450 and DP-500 EOL'ed, are we any closer to getting better access to the source code?
I fear not, as the DP-100x and DP-55x (not DP-500) still use the same Sigma chip as the DP-450 and DP-500?

Well we will get new firmwares from time to time , but not because KiSS is such a good company that cares about it's customers ;) but because it looks like the KiSS code is what I can call "modular" in the sence that when they change something for one player and it's not player speciffic they put this change into all players based on the same chipset.
So as long as KiSS going on with EM85x0 players we should get firmware updates once a while just because its "free" for KiSS.

In my point point of view the problem is: if now that 508 player is on the market, we are unable to use it without problems because KISS is not able to release a good firmware, do anyone think that after it'll be out of production KISS will care about making a good firmware ? I hope so, but what I saw so far is that this company started a good business but it's not able to make things work .....

The development for the DP-450/500/508 wont stop because they are EOL, as the DP-1000/1500/1508 are using the same code the just have a diffrent DVD drive.
As you already know the old model also use diffrent DVD drive (1612/1712/1802).
But of cause it is the beginning of the end, we have to at some point stop the development, but that is not until we EOL all product that is using the same code base (Sigma 8500/8550)
Will Kiss offer an upgrade path i.e. Can I trade in my DP-500 for a fully supported 1500

Don't think thats an option anyone can deliver.
You can sell your player on eBay or something (at MpegPlayer in the near future :-) ) and then buy a new one...

It's not because a product is EOL that you cant use it anymore. I use my DP-500 every night and I'll probably continue to do so wether it's still sold by KiSS or not.
Of course being a techy I always want the latest :-)
I go through this with my Palm devices and mobile phones every 6 months. Buy new ones, sell the old ones on a forum somewhere.
Will KiSS release the firmware source on the end ? so people can play with it and maybe improve the latest things ?

Hey that's a lot more optimistic than I was hoping for... It would be nice if Kiss could end this GPL code debacle and give our modders something more to play with :)

And most important, the community will not stop supporting them either...

That pissed me off, I've only just bought a DP500
Flanster, End of Life means will stop being sold...
Not stop being suported...
Exisitng customers will be supported in the future, firmware will still be released for these models and repair also in case of malfunction...
