View Full Version : Official KiSS Improvement Thread!
Hi all,
Mpeg-Playcenter and KiSS is very interested in your experience with KiSS.
We'd like to hear your personal comment on how KiSS can improve your experience.
A few rules apply though.
- Be constructive (no flaming)
- Explain the pro's and contra's you experience and not only the bad
- Make real suggestions that are possible to work on
(so nothing like, My experience will be better if you can see Qpel on DP-450)
Thanks in advance.
now let's make it all better together. 8)
Cheers
Hi-Jack
Hi
first my "specification"
Model: KiSS DP-500
Firmware: 2.7.4 ET (tested also 2.8.0, but there were problems with DivX playback (pixel "deformations"), CD audio playback buggy (noise during skip to next, previous song etc., so back to 2.7.4).
Positive:
- perfect picture & sound quality, network access, high number of playable video, audio & subtitles files, webradio, ...
Negative:
- high price of DivX player, not all functions are working as should be, ...
Suggestions:
- too small subtitles (it should be able to encrease them; one dealer company in my country has firmware with increased size of subtitles!!!)
- fixing at least "main bugs" in firmware 2.8.x (DivX playback, noise clips by moving between tracks on audio CD)
- supports of charsets in subtitles and better handling with them (in original firmware)
- option to move forward/backward in mp3 files (like audio CDs)
Ok, thats all, what I could remember at the moment :P
Bye,
Ranma12
I think the KiSS player overall is allright, BUT there is of cause something I would like to be fixed. It would be very nice to see the lenght of a movie (DVD) and the remaining playing time. Maybe a reset function... When i play mp3's / divx over the ethernet connection - the player often stops, and I have turn it off/on.
Regards
kiss.elge.dk
Thanks for the comments you guys made already.
please continue doing so.
In the end we will make a full report and sent it to KiSS.
Also comments on communication and so on is appreciated.
I for instance would vouch to stop sending the on-liners at Mail Support and replace them with Mail Templates. It would leave a much better impression to the customer asking for support.
That will be my addition on suggesting which improvements KiSS can make to have a higher customer satisfaction rate along with the fixes
we need for the players.
All round, i can say communication with KiSS has greatly improved so we are getting somewhere with all this.
Thx.
I'm pretty pleased with my (modded) 508. A few things for improvement:
- FF/REW in MP3 files
- using the players display for album/song info (so I do not have to switch on my TV)
- More stable FTP connection (I have to reconnect after uploading 2 movies)
- Audio DVD support
- RAW MP3 audio output
That's it for now. Once all this is done I will probably find something else to wish for.
Kind regards,
Dagobert
Hi all...
Just as a reminder, this post is not only for feature requests but also comments on KiSS.
Your KiSS satisfaction level all round and where KiSS needs to improve...
(Info, contacts, support, guidelines etc...)
Just spill your guts :-)

A fine player that plays almost everything with a lot fw updates so its very up to date.
-
Tray makes loud sound with dvd10 (dual side single layer) dvd's and with the current fw i can't play dvdmovies burned as udf in nero(i get a index list). No fw/rw support on mp3.
Hi-Jack,
I think its best for you to give a template of how to put comments so that it can be structured, Like:
Model Number of Unit:
Specification of Unit - Such as Rev:
Firmware Used:
Any Modifications Implemented:
Date of Purchase:
Location of Purchase - If relevant to Comments:
Positive Comments on Experience:
Negative Comments on Experience:
Future Suggestions:
Kiss Customer Support Experience- If Any:
Misc Comments:
At least this way the info is always there and One post will finalise the entire story rather then fragmented posts that need to be traced through.
Just a suggestion, hope it is useful, and if u want to remove if after implementing it, thats cool..
I'll be the first to use my own suggestions...
Model Number of Unit:
DP-500
Specification of Unit - Such as Rev:
Version 2 Rev B Sigma Chip
Firmware Used:
Base Firmware supplied 2.7.4, Upgraded to Original 2.8.0 and then Dracula Mod 2.8.3 with error 15 crc fix
Any Modifications Implemented:
Added a Maxtor 5400rpm 40GB Hard Disk
Date of Purchase:
Jan 2004
Location of Purchase - If relevant to Comments:
Scan.co.uk / England
Positive Comments on Experience:
The unit had a few kinks at first but once installed stable firmware, switched from using Kiss Pc-Link to Ez-Link the machine is now stable and does not cause problems. The DVD playback is good, sound output via Raw SPDIF is fine, with a few kinks at 2.7.4 but resoved with 2.8.0 afterwards.
Negative Comments on Experience:
Although based on problem due to previous firmware, the speed of file transfer is still a little too slow, in that it peaks at around 1.5MB when in fact there is a 100Mbit NIC on the unit, and I would like to use the whole Bandwidth. Would also suggest Control of and display of Music so that TV Display is not a must. Which would also include resolving Music playback features. MPEG playback sometime causes long delay or freeze on FF/REW but can understand technical demands on a relatively slow CPU.
Future Suggestions:
A program to inform and release firmware and products with minum delay and regularity. Even if firmware releases are not major releases, regualr releases would restore confidence in customer in that Kiss would look to be always bussy with improvements, no matter how minor. However, caution to the wind, I dont ask a firmware release for spelling mistakes on the menu!!! To also implement, if possible, a Remember feature that would remember were the last movie was stopped so that if the stop button in pressed accidently, the MPEG movie can be resumed without the needs for lengthy 48X FF from file start.
Kiss Customer Support Experience- If Any:
No direct contact as yet, however have not been impressed with third party feedback relating to their service, and basically dread the day that i need to contact them, and until then would always refer to sites such as this (Excellent Job Guys).
Misc Comments:
Although first/second generation units from Kiss, i can appreciate their efforts thus far and hope they can now concentrate on customer support to rectify impressions of them so far, and make their customers happy that they purchased Kiss. Although saying is alot easier than doing, so good luck.
Nice one Ferhada... :-)
This could be used as a template of what we need to gather other people's thought.
Great!
Nice one Ferhada... :-)
Great!
Hi-Jack I'll do what u did to someone else...lol..

:sor: So sorry :-)
How is my php page going?
Did you receive it?
Sorry been at uni most of the time and have not had time to finish it, perhaps if you could bare with me until Friday. I should have it done for ya by then..
Cool...
I'm a patient guy :-)
FF/FR for mp3;
Support for ".mov" and ".mp4" files;
Official support for 3ivx codec;
A nicer screen saver;
General speed improvements;
Inclusion of a stand alone viewer like mplayer (not vlc);
Support for audio aac multichannel.
I'm sorry for being brief, but I don't write English very well
Many thanks to KiSS and to people at Hi-Jack's Mpeg-Playcenter
Thanks maguz...
We do have a separate feature request list here though:

This thread is more for things like on which things KiSS can improve customer satisfaction, feautures included, but also on image, support, contact, site improvements and so on...
Just everything, the whole deal...

OK , I have DP-500 Rev B , US version running PAL 2.8.0 firmware.
I can devide my comments into two levels 1 - Things I wish , 2 - Things I wish in current player accepting it's hardware limitations.
(I will order them by importence to me)
I wish (generaly) :
1. OGM format support.
2. QPel support.
3. DivX Audio support.
4. WMV /ASF support (including streaming from internet and WebTV).
5. MOV support
6. RealMedia video format support (including streaming from internet).
7. HighMat or other menu building format support.
8. Support for subtitles in RAR.
9. More robbust IR remote codes to prevent "acidental" activations.
10. MP3 and othe sound media operations without TV, probably also nmeed LCD with higher resolution.
11. MTK format support.
12. SCART bypass connector.
13. Remember position in movie on last DVDs, SVCDs, VCDs and AVIs/MPEGs.
14. DVD Audio and SACD.
15. Bootloader in ROM (non-erasable) that if player activated and user holds some speciffic button loads firmware from CD , this will work as fix in case wrong firmware flushed to restore the player and also will allow to test mods without flashing the player.
16. NTP and power independent clock.
17. "display" or "info" button that shows file name , lenghs, subtitle/audio language and current time position on screen DURING playback until pressed again (more or less like setup, setup is also needed but it's too technical).
18. MS MPEG v1 and v2 Codecs.
I think KiSS should add (in current player):
1. FF/Rew on MP3 OGG
2. Support for multiply lang, preferable allow to change in run time(from menu) both for the subtitles and file names.
3. Support for more then one subtitle file , KiSS defines lang. selection rules.
4. Transcoding application (to be able to stream QPel ,OGM , WMV and such to player in MPEG4 ISO format it can play).
5. Show timer position in time search dialog on screen , the LCD counter is too smal for bigger distances.
6. MP3 Tags v2 support (including embeded JPEG images).
7. Bigger subtite fonts (preferable selectable 2-3 sizes).
8. Support for font modifiers in subtitles (like {i} for [i]italic[/b] and {b} for bold in .SRT format.
9. Variable zoom sizes including <100% sizes (or better screen "moving"/"sizing" mode that let you select borders).
10. Not so ugly file selection frame :)
11. Support for subtitle streams INSIDE AVI files (You can create them with VirtualDubMod v1.5+) and more then one of them.
12. More information (same as in AVI) on MPEG videos like length and so.
13. Time counter in every file format (like .AC3 files , SVCD and so on).
14. Player should react to commands right away even from screen saver.
15. Configurable FreeDB access timeout (I get FreeDB information on same CD on 1 insertion out of 3).
16. Configurable "webradio" links (actually it's higher priority but I heard it's in development already).
17. On-screen time position display when user press PAUSE and may be filename display too.
18. Remember movie position on last DVD disks (same as 13 in prev. but only for DVDs) at least for last 3.
19. Ability to set daylight saving switching dates (in some countriesd it's not consistent with "general" timezone).
20. Now when we have a clock it would be nice to have calendar in menu too :)
21. Bigger (full LCD size) clock .
22. Single "file" browser that show all supported audio, video, and picture files unless "filtered" by user (different filters can be assigned to different number keys , like 0 - all , 1 - video only , 2 - audio only and such).
23. Sorting of the file names, the method should be selectable in settings menu but can be changed (not sticky) in run time for example by pressing "angle" on the remote (should cycle - original, file name , file type (see prev request) , file size , file name reverse , file type reverse and file size reverse).
24. Move the IP /DHCP settings from Main menu to setup menu - they do not belong there !
25. Add the time zone settongs to the quick setup.
26. Given amount of reencoding KiSS player require sometime I thik KiSS should boundle their players with something like DrDivX.
27. Warning if user about to flush firmware made for one player to another model , or PAL firmware on NTSC (and backwards) , just warning , no need to prevent it , but simple "Are you sure you wanf to flush DP-xxx firmware on your DP-yyy player?" would be sufficent.
Thing I consider bugs (that I think should be fixed asap):
1. VBR sound problems (sound out of sync).
2. JPEG wrong scaling ratio.
3. non mod8 encoded bad video (introduced in 2.8.0 ).
4. wrong aspect ratios when playing VOB files (not DVDs , just VOB).
5. UDF file structure should be read before ISO to fix the "problems" with DirectCD , InCD and such.
6. UDF only DVDs should be treated as DVD , not as a disk with VOBs.
Now in general:
- The player have good analogue hardware , the output quality of both video and audio is quet good.
- Despite my constant "crying" about the problems in general as programmer :) I am pretty impress with player ability to play most of the files , whe I bought the player I expected less, but this does not mean that player ready for mainstream not techy user.
- One disapointment I had is that when I first read about this player I expected as I sayd before even more problems but I did expected them to be resolved in time, I did not expected hardware limitations (If I knew Sigma specs at that point I probably would but I didn't) I did expected to have most of the "I wish" part but in time.
- Also I did not expected that KiSS will be that slow and heavy on UI and user interructions changes (again the luck of FF in MP3 is a joke and the selection frame is a bad joke :) - almost became KiSS trademark :) ).
- KiSS "relations" with their customers are also very strange , the "hit and run" forum policy does not add to the expirience. And luck of the multilanguge support is a biggest KiSS $%$ up , this IS THE most demended feature, and ET already shown that it doible and easily but KiSS still can't add it to off firmware ! The only thing that "saves" KiSS is the existance of ET firmwares, otherwise I believe KiSS sales would be much lower and returns much higher.
Btw: I think it could be good idea if KiSS had an internationally shiping Web store for their products, even with high prices and costly DHL or Fedex shipping it could "open" the KiSS for many users that having problems ordering/locating KiSS products in their countries .
Or may be Hi-Jack will open one ;) ?
Well again the biggest problems for me is hardware limitations but as you can see in my "lists" KiSS have a lot of room for improovment too, I will hate to see in my new DP-600 ;) same luck of FF in MP3s for example :)
Another thing - player look , Have to say that when first I got the player I was fasinated with it's black box :) style look , but with time I came to realize that it's what it is - just black box 8O :)
Really the grey "hitech" style boxes look better to me , especially it's true with DP-1000 , which has "wrong proportions" to be "black box" :) Of cause it's my personal opinion of cause.
OK , I have DP-500 Rev B , US version running PAL 2.8.0 firmware.
6. UDF only DVDs should be treated as DVD , not as a disk with VOBs.
I had the same thing here.
I report this bug to kiss and they forward it to firmware department.
k...
We still need some additional comments before finalising our all round report to KiSS and discuss it with some people over there...
You have another few days to make a little report for us.

Kiss Customer Support Experience- If Any:
Misc Comments:
I have a DP1000 running on Fw 2.88, I have never had something to do with costumer support yet, so I cannot judge that aspect...
Overal experience:
++
-A good, not to expencive divx player.
-Good picture (but then again on tv everything looks better as on pc because of lower resolution :P )
-Good sound output
-Lot of FW upgrades
__
-FW releases are often unstable, better announce it later, do a bit more testing and release later.
-NO reset button
-NO Qpel
image/pr wise:
They better wait a little longer to say new FW or new model is coming (2.88 and dp558) if they are not sure how lang its gonna take them. I see really negative comments on all the sites about kiss still not having released it and kiss stalling time etcetera etcetera... They should have waited longer to annouce these things to be released.
Hardware wise:
-A reset button. The player hangs sometimes, this negative experience is really made worse because you have to unplug the player every time it does....
-Chipset that plays Qpel AND subtitles (I hear this is already gonna be used in kiss 600 series, but then again as said as before, kiss announces a lot, but take ages to really do what they say!)
FW wise:
ability to move subtitles up and down
Subtitles:
1. Ability to move them up and down
2. Ability to choose font and its size
3. Ability to configure (the best would be during playback) subtitle delay and subtitle showing time (fixed time, smart engine calculating time based on subtitle length with presets like "Slow reading", "Medium reading" and "Fast reading")
4. White subtitles with black border instead of semi-transparent background
Other features:
1. Support for reading CD-Text from Audio-CD (additionally to CDDB)
2. Support for different audio codecs like APE, MPC, SHN and others (I mean audio files not audio tracks in AVI files)
And all raported bugs fixed!!!!!

I'm new and I haven't tested extensively the machine (dp-1000) which I only received yesterday, so I can't say anything particularly good or bad.
Besides, I'm already having a little problem (misplaced tray door) which I'm trying to sort out on my own (hate replacing/sending back stuff...)
But I can tell you one thing. The reason for which I bought KiSS instead of other similar - or better - performing machines is because I found this Forum/Website, read it, explored it and understood that I could have counted on an invaluable source of support/information for it.
That's the way it goes, for me...
4. wrong aspect ratios when playing VOB files (not DVDs , just VOB).
The info for the aspect in .vob's in normally located in the .ifo file .. so a whole new dvd special network logic needs tobe added. It whould be nice, but I'll be happy when KiSS:
- added support for mpeg2 file large as 2Gb.

Look, Well well....
Kiss should donate to this site/forum as a it supports there PR inderectly :P
Just would like to tell them to have a look on the buglist (before improving) .
I think there is enough work to do....not concerning new features...but old bugs. I think there is a nice and complete list in this forum.
