View Full Version : Which features would you like to see from Kiss or a modder
Beside the bug thread I also wanted this thread.
My whishlist for now contains 2 additional features.
- Switch from autosensing to a fixed value like 100 Full / 100 Half /10 Full /10 Half for the Ethernet card
- Support the use of nfs instead of pc-link software (already coded by BIG)
cu ak.
NTSC versions for FTP and so on... :-)
There are user's out there and if it ain't a too big job...
It would be nice for them... :-)
a document profiding all the info so i can program my kiss to do what ever i want it to do:) now that would be a customizable product :):)
but seriously, if the modders gather all the info the development goes much faster. I dont know if this is happening now, and eaven if there are serious attempts to annalyse the disassembled program, but if it does i would very much like to know what the current status is :)
Hi all!
The most annoying bug for me is the aspect ratio problem. It is explained in detail in the official request list of gooddvdstuff, in few words, in both divx/xvid AND DVD playback, the image is ubnormally stretched horizontally (in PAL mode people appear fat) and vertically (in NTSC mode people appear thinner than normal). This happens in smaller degree in DVD playback. Another sideffect of this is the loss of picture in the edges (lef and right for PAL, up and down for NTSC). This is totally unexeptable. I think that having a wrong aspect ratio is something that needs to be remedied as soon as possible. I don't know if this can be done without the source with a moded firmware but it is a must. Also, a way to manually adjust the aspect ratio (in very small steps) would be usefull. Here is the original report from gooddvdstuff, I only hope it gets the attention it deserves
Correction to a pixel aspect ratio for the DivX movies
The software as it is now does not correct the divx files pixel aspect ratio for display on a *conventional tv*.
If a divx/xvid file has been authored correctly, it has been created with a square pixel aspect ratio as computer monitors have square pixels. However the TV does not have square pixels. Thats why on PAL TVs the image will look slightly fat or squashed and on NTSC TVs will look thinner or pinched.
The KiSS software could have implemented an option to acount for this. It then could either slightly squeeze (for PAL) or stretch (for NTSC) the frame width of the divx file BEFORE adding black bars and then the movie would appear in the correct ratio on a 4:3 tv.
This could then be adapted to 16:9 TVs by increasing the adjustment factor so that an anamorphic picture could be created.
An example: at the moment theres an excellent competition in another thread to design replacement background images for future fw. Now the image needs to be 720x480 (NTSC). Say you were creating an NTSC image using a program like photoshop, because you're creating on your computer (square pixels remember!) you should actually start with an image dimension of 640x480. Once you have finished your image, you would then resize the width to 704 and then increase *canvas* size to include the overscan to a width of 720. Now while this would look a little odd on your pc, it will look perfect when displayed on your tv. The maths:
4:3 PAL -- resize width by 91.67%
4:3 NTSC -- resize width by 110%
16:9 PAL -- resize width by 68.75%
16:9 NTSC -- resize width by 82.5%
Then add overscan and then top and bottom black bars where appropriate. The above of course relies on the fact that the file has been encoded correctly (ie no black bars in the actual encode). Alternatively, it could be easier to alter the frame height rather than the width.
It really is an issue as we would like, of course, to see films displayed in their proper aspect ratio. It is all the more concerning since KiSS competitor's divx/xvid players (LiteON -based on the same hardware-, Philips, H&B...) do not have this problem and display Divx/Xvid films properly. Some people have actually replaced their Kiss player for another brand because of that. As it is not the general plan for the people on this forum, we would really like to hear what you are planning to do about it.
Thank you all for trying to perfect kiss, it is really nice to be part of this community :)
QPel support
NFS support
Software updates from PC (FW, Backgrounds, programs etc.)
ASF and WMV support
VobSub support
Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec V1 and V2 support
Definitively, fix the aspect ratio BUG, *lol*. XXXXXXXXXX. Also, *.idx/*.rar would be nice.
- Fix the aspect ratio problem with pictures on a 16/9 widescreen (strangely, I've no aspect ratio problem with divx, but I must zoom, see below), especialy verticaly displayed pics that makes people very fat!
- Widescreen display of divx. I have to make my TV zooming... It would be better if the player strech the picture horizontaly so I can put my TV on widescreen mode and not loosing some lines (my TV is 50Hz, so It misses lines when in zoom mode).
- Fix the remote problem, or the strange behavior that sometimes makes my player open the CD door or print setup informations while I'm watching a movie since 30 minutes without doing anything!
- Webradio:
- bookmarks would be very very usefull
- printing of the quality in kbps in he list is cruely missing
PS: sorry for my poor english
NTSC version of Biker's and others (besides the already available weather+imdb FW) modded firmware for the DP-508 (modded from dp-500). FTP capability and weather+imdb mod also with that would be top-priorities -jonny123/jonathan
Hi_jack is trying something like that
http://www.mpcclub.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=84#328
Aspect ratio, absolutely! I am a KiSS user since 16 hours, and it was the first bug I noticed.
There are aspect ratio problems dealing with every media, not only DivX.
The reason is simple enough: we are used to encode & watch DivX/XviD media on a VGA device, i.e. with vertical dpi == horizontal dpi, i.e. square pixels.
Unfortunately neither PAL nor NTSC support that, nor do anamorphic displays of both.
It's really not a big thing to deal with, anyhow.
Ratio of input media can be:
- VGA
- PAL (i.e. 4:3 PAL)
- Anamorphic PAL (i.e. 16:9 PAL)
- NTSC (i.e. 4:3 NTSC)
- Anamorphic NTSC (i.e. 16:9 NTSC)
Ratio of output device can be 4:3 (PAL or NTSC) or 16:9 (PAL or NTSC), but this the DVD player already knows from the firmware and setup values.
I'd like to see a "source ratio menu" as an option of video and images containing all the input media choices shown above.
The output may be determined from the firmware and the setup value, so it's really a trivial work to do.
I hope they will fix it, I have received an answer that if I change the mpeg full screen to off it should be ok!!! 8O Of course the problem remains, I 'd already tried that, so I sent them another mail . Such a lame answer from kiss support, seems like they don't really bother understanding our problems or they just don't want to. There may be some hope if we all just bombard kiss support hotline@kiss-technology.com with emails regarding the aspect raio problem and mentioning the details as described in the official list: http://www.gooddvdstuff.com/kissdvd/viewtopic.php?t=651&start=151
Bombin Kiss support will not help at all...
A more structured approach would be better.
We are currently creating a list and when the next firmware comes up, we'll talk to Kiss about the bug's not fixed.
We can't expect to fix all at the same time but we expect several major fixes in the next release...
Regards.
Hi-Jack

Hi-Jack
Lets just hope then, that aspect ratio is one of them... Still, if someone wants to report this to kiss, I wouldn't stop him ;)
Definitively, fix the aspect ratio BUG, *lol*. XXXXXXXXXX. Also, *.idx/*.rar would be nice.
Support for *.rar files???? For what use??
probably to zip pictures and still be able to see them on you kiss...
vlc support would be nice (video lan client)

UOP disabled would also be nice (DVD mode only)!
UOP (user operation prohibition) are responsible for blocking all navigation buttons (fast forward, next chapter, menu etc) at their will. UOPs are usually applied in menus, in intros, trailers, ads, copyright warnings etc making sure you can not fastforward or skip them. This is very very annoyning. :x

Already mentioned this at Gooddvdstuff, but why not post here too..
I'd like ( if it's possible ) an enqueue function when playing mp3( why not others too for that matter.. ) via Ethernet or from a cd. It'd be nice to select a few songs to play in a particular order.
Also the "Random"-function is kind of sucky. It seems that even if you have 500 files in a folder, it still plays the same ones pretty often.
1st: CSS/MV removed to play original stuff with vga
2nd: 720p/1080i working
(i know there is not a lot of people with a dlp/lcd/crt projector,
plasma/lcd screens...but I want this mod so much  )
You're not the only one! 720p/1080i is a important feature! I hope as well that a modder can realize this!
 Could it be possible to put a little browser, ir support 4 keyboard/mouse (like those in a lot of hotels) to have a internet
console? We could use the hdd to save browser and so on...
support for several subtitles files (different languages)
ogm support
easy navigation between directories and files with LCD only, for mp3 cd
I'd really like to see an option to shutdown the PC running the
PC-Link software with the Kiss player..
should be possible right?
:?
Playing burned UDF dvd's.
The mod of 2.7.4 already read UDF disc and kiss orginal fw 2.8.0 does tha same but not playing dvd's and i hate that because selecting every vob file isn't nice en besides you can't select soundtracks and subtitles.
Definitively, fix the aspect ratio BUG, *lol*. XXXXXXXXXX. Also, *.idx/*.rar would be nice.
Support for *.rar files???? For what use??
Some people have subtitles ripped from DVd in form of .idx and .sub files. These two files are packed together into rar archive. So probably somebody want support for such subtitles andd additionaly for subtitles in rar archive. :-)
That seems acceptable.
Good thinking :-)

yes thats what i meant, and the player doesn't have
a) enough memory to decompress the rar file
b) doesn't have enough memory to play the video after decompressing ;-)
and c) cpu is slow, you would wait long time to decompress ;-)

Disconnection command after set time at bootup with 2.8.0:
if you let the pc launch a connection if required by a pc on lan,
when you powercycle the player and it has to set time,
pc automatically dials up but, after set time,
it doesn't disconnect, so if you pay connection by time...
The only way is to set connection expiring after one minute
of inactivity, but when you surf the forum...that's not a good idea...
I know there is a way to send a disconnection command through
lan, but could it be added to the fw?

support 3vid codec files
Full support for VGA !!!
New firmware doesn't allow copy protected DVD in VGA. (you've got only a black screen, and when you hit STOP, you can see the picture for a short time, very frustrating !!)
With 2.6.5 it was possible so it would be so nice if someone could bring
that feature back !!
sorry but such a command doesn't exist ;-)

"rasdial [connectionname] /disconnect"
This in a Winzoz lan...
And if Win has this, than Linux surely has something better...
Two mods for me if thay are at all possible
1. I would like to see elasped timer on screen. Sometimes the timer on the front panel is to far away to view.
2. How about Divx Menus. This can be implemented through a small init file with every avi which will include the chapter and start time for the chapter. All the player will need to do is just bring up a menu when a button is pressed with the chapter list. Upon selecting a scrolled through selection the player will search to the time identified for the respective chapter.
My personal wishlist :)
- Don't know if this is already possible but it would be really nice if it's possible to turn on webradio without navigating through 10 different screens. Maybe some kind of lcd menu?
- Favorites for webradio2. It's already possible to use the TinyStocks mod's bookmarks, but the interface for that isn't really user friendly. I think this is something KiSS can fix in their webradio2 pages.
- KML2 specifications. Maybe someone from KiSS could supply us with a draft?
- A way of adding my own entries to the webradio2 startup page. Ie to make a connection to a KML2 server on my local lan.
- Retain state when the player is put on stand-by. When listening to webradio and the player is put on standby, it won't go back to webradio when it's out of standby.

for 2.8.0 in NTSC (blind-modded/converted the PAL version to NTSC)
and I don't like the NTP clock much but love everything else...
The mods I'd recommend are:
1)When NTP clock is off, it defaults to Aaronl V2 clock--12 hr w/ am/pm.
2).MOV support
3)Ability to mount the HDD in Windows2000/Windows XP
really reaching
4)MPEG4 asp and sp support...if do-able
That would be my optimal wish list... seems do-able.
I'm so impressed with you developers--Aaronl, Dracula, Doppie, ET and many others... your work is exceptional.

My wishlist:
1. Listen to MP3s and view JPegs at the same time
2. Have all commands display something on the TV (now there are buttons on the remote that do not "acknowledge" that they have been activated)
3. FTP support (in original FW)
4.Weather & IMDB / Tinystocks support (in original FW)
5. The green button on the remote only functions in the Webradio (go back one page); why not let it do that exact same thing in the normal menu of the player?
6. Get the damn Webradio to work...And solve all the other bugs please...
3)Ability to mount the HDD in Windows2000/Windows XP
really reaching
Try WebDrive for Win32
Great idea... looks like it makes a FTP connection a drive letter... that'll work... -jonny123/jonathan
I would like the pc-link software running on the pc host to contain a mini-webserver which serves kml pages. Which can be editied to create your own portal which touching the firmware.
This way instead of the player connecting directly to kiss webradio2 the kiss player connects to pc-link host ip e.g. http://192.168.0.10:8001/index.html
which is just a kml file in the pc-link directory.
This is turn has links for webradio etc, etc.
In addition (I am testing this tonight) if my test show that you cannot play avi's from a webserver using a KML <PLAYMEDIA> link I would like KISS to add support for this in the fileplayer.
As it is the Kiss player simply requests a list of files for the audio/video/pictures category and the pc-link software sends back and untampered file stream. So this should be possible.
- DivX audio support (priority big 1)
- extended fourcc, meaning don't stop with an unknown fourcc but let the user choose in a list of availbale decoders to try.
- switch mode to degrade audio quality when streaming rate is too high (more than 2000) in order to avoid picture freezes.
- enhanced menu modes
- real fast back/forward on screen search
- true screensaverS (with a choice menu) when playing MP3/CDDA instead of being obliged to shut down tv.

wmv suport but since vma is suported now perhaps thats not to far in the future ;)
however to give pofe of that im a real newbee i have a sully question , everyone talks about marcovision , and its remooval , i dont even know what macrovision is , can someone explain tnx :D ......
Macrovision is a protection against illegally copying dvd's.
It will discramble the signal from the dvd to the tv so any recording device between the dvd and tv can not be used to record the dvd.
When it's removed, you can copy any dvd on videtape or other recording media.
Regards.
I have crapy Apex AD700 DvD player witch enables me to see movie without seeing directly the advertisements, I jump it with "forward" button but not KISS DP-450

I would really appriciate if some modder changed the sorting order for files om HD on a DP-50(8).
I use Draculas mod (Thanks man :-) and FTP files to my HD. As it is now, the files are lister ordered by time when I transferred the file to the HD. Orderred by filename descending woúld be prefferable.
Shouldn't the regular "ls"-command without parameters be base for the listing of files? It seems odd that they are listed orderred by creation date, cause it is creationdate and not latest modification date as it is now....
I would like a mod with:
- Harddisk filelist ordering by filename
- MV removed
- Clock NTP
- FTPD ( not using DMA - see _dracula_)
- KML Tinystocks
I reckon someone is still working on the SMB mount. If someone got it workinhg without file transfer faults it would really be a hit :-)
Thnx

Hi all!
Yesterday got my DP500 and patched it region free, ET FW2.8.0, and I'm very happy :D . Brilliant piece of hardware (RevB: tested with AVI test file, very handy indeed!). BUT:
I miss:
- being able to return to the main menu from the Webradio submenu. You have to press the STOP button, which exits everything altogether.
- favourits in the Webradio menu's.
- having Webradio keep on playing when going through the TV listings or the weather manager or viewing JPEG, etc (does it have enough mem/cpu for that?)
- having the clock displayed in the LCD all the time.
- having an elapsed time/remaing time OSD option (MP3/DVD/DivX).
- haven't came by them yet, but read about them alot; fixes of the various bugs.... (that is not very fair of me now, is it?! )
I don't think KiSS will have too much trouble implementing most of them in a next firmware, agree?
Hasta la Pasta, Misha
DP-500, ET FW 2.8.0, RevB, not modded (yet).
PS: what is the "clock NTP" option? It isn't explained on the 'KiSS Mod. Firmware' page.
A NTP clock is a clock as any other clock except it needs network feeding for initialisation. It will check the time on a NTP server (Network Time Protocol) to get the initial time.

Actually, with ET's firmware you can initiallize it without an ethernet connection :)
See ET's page for details on how to do that.
Question: Does the ntp clock constantly update it's time through the ethernet connection or it uses it just for initialization?
Thanks for the answer on the NTP clock.
But the ET FW clock must also initialize itself by internet, I didn't touched it and it works like a charm..!
Greetings, Misha
My own wishes are:
- OGM support
- DVD Audio support
- More KML web sites to be design (need of KML2 specification from Kiss)
- A kind of HTML to KML translator that make possible to browse normal HTML pages on your Kiss player.
- To be able to directly mount HDD on Windows (Smb)
Thanks for the answer on the NTP clock.

Yes, of course, ET's clock is no other than the kiss clock. ET just made it possible to initialise it with or without the Ethernet connection! :)
It would be very nice to be able to mount an img on computer, for example a dvd-r and then stream it including menu and subtitles on player. Thats one of the things I'm missing most.

Well, not sure how long is it there but I can see that there is no much progress on fixing any of those things
It's there since yesterday
Look at the post date :-)
I'd like:
- Better pre-buffering (buffer-ahead) of MP3's via LAN and CD, so you can listen multiple (live) MP3's without a few seconds of pause between them (must noticeable when streaming via LAN), like when playing Live Audio CD's.
- tracknumber indication whem playing MP3 CD's/MP3 by LAN, like when playing audio CD's. (in the 'clock' display-part)
Put simply, I would like the KISS player to recognize commands from a more common DVD remote control (e.g. Sony DVD). For legal reasons I suppose KiSS can't make this available, but certainly a mod could be made available unless there was some hardware reason with regard to the IR.
Frankly, I get tired of hunting for the "special" remote control required for the KiSS DVD player and would prefer to use a universal IR remote control (which all brands support Sony DVD) or to use an actual Sony remote control which by default is able to send DVD IR commands.
Don't misunderstand I am not promoting Sony (their DVD players cannot and never will play DivX movies), I just get tired of so many remote controls and know the Sony remote is always supported because it is so popular.
I know there are zoom features, etc that would not be available using a non-KiSS remote but to be honest I don't use these features anyway. Alternatively, some clever way to access the features via a menu might be found.
Also, the choice of remote control could be made as an option in the setup instead of a forced replacement of the KiSS remote.
Well, player,
I understand your problem, but it is fairly easy to resolve, as there are many replacement remote's, ranging from a few ? to ?1000+, with large LCD touchscreens or just plain simpel. And they can learn the codes from your KiSS remote, it is not too bad a job. I myself use my Harman Kardon system remote, which had such a learning feature, and I can do anything I could do with the KiSS system remote.
But granted, an option would be nice, of course.
Greetz, Misha
- I'm hate to press down arrow key each time to move down on a one string when it needs to select a file number 17, for example, from a list of files on HDD or a PC.
It's easy to programm detection of a pressed key with some delay in some places of menu. (like volume up and down) It would be much easier to navigate...
- It would be great to have some kind of HOT KEY COMBINATIONS in order to reach some plases of a menu.
for example, you never press a zoom key in a main menu or in stand by mode, - let it would be a first key of a HOT KEY STRING: will looks like: zoom - 4 -1 will move me to a fourth selection of a main menu and on a first selection on this page i.e. to the HDD menu and audio folder selection.
It will looks like a spead deal on some cellular phones.
You're right Saniok...
You should be able to hold down an arrow button and have the control scroll, that is keep entering the same arrow command. That is annoying when you have to scroll down 4 screens with a ton of keypresses to get to the file you want.

U dont, Press right or left and u scroll a page at a time. For example u see 10 items on ur page and u have 30, all u need to do is to press the right hand button and u will scroll by page, so the first page will show first 10, the next will start from 10 and go to 20 and so on and so forth. Then all u do is to go to the item u want when u get it to the page u want..
Thats how it works with my 500>508 when i'm browsing films of MP3's
Yes, but even 6 or 7 times press down arrow key is not good solution.
I'm lazy :P and prefer to press down key ones and to wait for a moment... like on a computer
Yes, my example with the "file number 17" is not good, but I miss this requested feature
Just like phenice said, i also would like to see a cool screensaver like a winamp/mediaplayer visualizationplugin of some sort, to use when streaming audio or listening to CDs. Is there enough power in the processor to manage that? 8)
It will not "eat" a power at all.
Just another sort of algorithm of pressed key detection.
When you changing volume on a player it doesn't hangs cause of the cpu becomes overstrained
It's would be nice for further work to have an syslogd output on /hdd/log.
Also there are many bugs in the FW:
hdparm -t gives an error.
fdisk only works with -l.
the cp command is very slow.
the ftp speed is also slow (but faster than the cp, hihihi ;-)
Hi guys,
what I'd like my DP1000 supported is this:
The capability to read new "Lyrics" tag in mp3 file and to show it during the song-play.
A sort of karaoke...
I don't think it's an impossible thing to do for modders or for Kiss staff...
Thank you very much!
Bye, Hunter!
Hi Hunter,
Thgis would need additional memory to load the file and coding to read and show the file...
Even a clock causes several files to play with hick-ups so this would probably too...
However, if anyone feels this is something he feels like doing...
It's welcome...

A question: Kiss supports ID3 tag v1 or V2?
If it supported ID3v2, the problem of the lyric could be solved by inserting lyrics inside "comment" tag (that in ID3v2 is longer than 1 line...).
Thanks for the answer!
Hi, Hunter
It was hardly a guess my reply... :-)
Also the tags would not be sufficient, i think there's a limit in lines to it and how will you set the time of text to display to reflect the song...?
i dunno, i'm not realy into tags and so on...
Lack of time to do it all...
My wishlist:
* No delay in AVI seeking/timesearch
* Special menu for KML access to PC host
* KML play url that accepts pc files. Like: "ktp://10.0.0.44:8000/myfiles/myvideo.avi". The player would request the file as if it was selected under network playlists... that way it would enable FF/RR, Timesearch, etc
* MPEG freeze/crash fix - Some of my mpg files (even mpg1) freeze the player forcing me to reboot it
* Network subtitle check (even if you play from a CD/DVD on your player it would ask the PC-Link for a subtitle)
* Multiple ISO character support (like portuguese character for once)
* Remote player administration, enabling you to change backgrounds, etc without having to 'hack' the firmware
That's all I can remember for now...
Cheers

how will you set the time of text to display to reflect the song...?
Hi, Hi-Jack!
Well... I mean, not a real karaoke with "time" and so on... I meant something more simply... just the lirycs on the screen, without any time-reference...
Ok ok... It's not wat Kiss Readers have been created to do!... :)
Thanks for the job you keep up doing!
Hunter!
support for realmedia file (rm) sounds good!
Only Korean subtile's sizes are too small.....
increase the Korean font size ........
or
add a function that change the subtitle's size....
Hi Delsa,
we will add it to the list...
This topic is now locked.
Here is a combined post of all the "new feuture request" topics :-)

Post feature requests to that post... :-)
How about a tutorial for all us newbies (and the more advanced) showing a step-by-step tutorial on how you make a complete modded firmware upgrade.
The more of us that know how to do it, the more variety and choice we will have on picking and choosing what feature we want in a particular upgrade.
For instance, we may see a later upgrade of firmware but we may want to change the backgrounds or enable or disable another feature. We may even want to make our own backgrounds for everyone to share.
Another tab to the left here marked 'DIY Development' perhaps would not go amiss !
I don't see the need for that.
Most features that have been added can be used or not.
it does not require user action to enable or disable while everything else works as in the original firmware.
Changing background tutorials are already available, as is a tool available to do it quick and easy, as is a guide to flash region free etc...
Modifying firmware requires knowledge of Linux and several tools...
a tutorial would be too much work if even basic knowledge is not available.
Srry :-)

Definitively, fix the aspect ratio BUG, *lol*. XXXXXXXXXX. Also, *.idx/*.rar would be nice.
Support for *.rar files???? For what use??
Very simple , a lot of subtitles come in archived .rar files and a lot of players and VobSub filter can read them from inside .rar , so some people burned their disk with subtitles in .rar and now want to be able to play them on KiSS - dreamers ;)
There are modded FWs out there for all players for multilanguage character sets and bold and bigger fonts but not for the DP-1000.
So please as a DP-1000 user and speaking on behalf of all others (I presume) I would like to see in my player:
- Bigger fonts
- Support for all character sets (iso8859-1 till 8)
- Fix the 1 sec early subs bug
- Macrovision free
- Region free (since the new DP-1000 players come with the hidden menu Region option disabled)
This would be a dream firmware for me, thanx to all
For the DP-1500 series.
How about the ability to use a USB2.0 PCMCIA in the PCMCIA slot to interface with an external HD.
I realize this may not be that useful but since I cannot delete my post completely I'll leave it.

Since it seems like this one won't find its way in the bug-list, I would like to see someone fix the shuffle-function. The current shuffle just isn't working the way it's supposed to work ( plays the same song over and over again ).
Also, I would like to have a "cross-folder"-mode in file playback. At the moment, I've had to divide my mp3-files into two folders to be able to see them all on my dp-500. Can't really play both folder at the same time.
I'd like to be able to play DVD's from networked images or from other drives than the KISS-player.
This would allow me to choose from images, or even to do a continuous view of all of the "lord of the rings" dvd's, zipping and zapping forward.
Now I can play VOB's, but choosing audio or subtitles is not supported.
All features are available from the physical DVD so it shouldn't be too much hassle.

A lot of subtitles come packed in .rar and VobSub can "get" them from there , so many people have it this way burned.
CIFS so I can mount the drive on my XP machine.
And a Nullsoft NSV client. So we can view each others content on the I-net. :D
you can mount your drive with Paragon Mount Everything!

A feature, which is not already mentioned:
-> Support for a second audio stream in the SVCD format
My first post is a request, I am ashamed
But it's kinda easy to realise... I'd like to have the find - command enabled in the busybox for the 508 player. When I've copied my music on the disc I forgot to remvoe all the cover-pics before I have done it. Now I'm not willing to delete them all by hand...
Any other solution to search the disk for spezial files and delete them automatically is welcome too
Use FTP.
That should be ok to remove the files by hand.
(by looking at the extensions)
8)
FTP won't work. I have tried several clients, even with the ability to search for files recursively through directories (which never worked...)
I'll concrete my problem: The files are spread over more than 1400 directories.
I am close to remove the hdd from my player and reorganise everything at the PC :D

It should be possible right now. There is an option in menu to search network for PC-Link server. You should get a list of such servers and you can use any of them.

i know its already possible to seach for pclink but should not be needed to search everytime i want to switch to other computers... now i have to change pclink whole time...you should be able to choose which pclink you want to use and then go there without searching... And if you have a list with pclinks you can add other peoples pclink too without need to change back to your own again...

I'd like to be able to have more files in a single folder and still be able to see them all on my kiss player as i would like to use it to play my MP3 collection which is 4000+ songs. also an A - Z link bar at the top to jump to the area of the list i want, and maybe also the ability to create playlists or use playlists already created by winamp etc. :)
The possibility to play webtv from shoutcast or other providers. I'm not sure what format shoutcast use for their webtv broadcasts, but if it's supported by the player it shouldn't be a major problem?

EzLink have a "trik" , you can "tell" it to report that size of the file is 2GB so this way you can use time shifting. However I do not remember the registry field you have to change to enable it - ask FCLage.
wma support in divx films
I bought the DP 500 , before 2 Month.
Honestly I feel sorrow about that, i have to should wait one Year or longer.
Since I am using the Kiss 508 Mod mostly as my Jukebox, a few things which are already mentioned in the case are really annoying me.
Most annoying thing:
That you can't Forward and Backward MP3 Files, I have some Essential Mixes which are up to 172 MB :(, and sometimes some parts are not so well, but you cant play forward.
Also for ogg Vobis and so on..
Second annoying thing:
List Files from a Directory in alphabetic Order :(
--
If these things are fixed, im mean it comes to the Final Version,
but for now, it is just Beta stuff.
I also Watched some DVD and notice no errors
*.m2v support, and kiss (or modder) fixing the damn random function, witch does not work at alle now.
Note: *.m2v files can be played if renamed to *.mpeg so it shouldent be hard for kiss to implement.
Quoting Fclange (a big thank you btw) "A hidden feature of ezlink (yes... the current available version has it) is that if you have a file (mpg/mpeg) that is being written (ex: from a TV capture card/etc) and file name has "[ezlink-streamfile]" in it (ex: "tv_capture_video_[ezlink-streamfile].mpg"), then ezlink will report it to have 2GBytes automatically. You should access the file via live folders..."
It seems to work if you use "[ezlink-streamfile]" as the name for the folder as well

Maybe even one that's working as it should ( doesn't play the same file twice until all the files have been played once ).
Wishes from a newbie:
- Support for OGM
- Support for lossless compressed audio
- Software reset. All these hangs and there is no power button on my 1500... How about a watchdog instead, restarting the player when a given remote key combination is received.
Thanks!

support for cue files for mp3 would be nice for 1 track mixes and like that..
Disable HDD Info menu ( clean harddrive ) or add a text link to quit this feature (option?).
because only option is clean harddrive !
to quit we do press menu but how my "stupid ;-)" girlfriends know that ?

I just wan´t my DP-1000 to work, playing MP3, divx, audio-cd, mpeg-files as it supposed to do. As it is now, can play but not change song or file :( Waiting...

Same wish here too. I have done some analysis - thanks to freekiss 0.2 - . I am not sure it should be a firmware fix or an pc-link/free kiss fix.
Here is the output generated by freekiss-link v0.2 software:
20:14:57: >> ACTION 1 |vtgcacntc1tc| H:\tv\laatste8uurjournaal.MPG|
20:14:57: >> SIZE H:\tv\laatste8uurjournaal.MPG|
20:14:57: >> GET H:\tv\laatste8uurjournaal.MPG| 0 64 |vtgcacntc1tc|
20:14:57: >> GET H:\tv\laatste8uurjournaal.MPG| 0 131072 |vtgcacntc1tc|
20:14:57: >> GET H:\tv\laatste8uurjournaal.MPG| 366352384 131072 |vtgcacntc1tc|
20:14:57: >> GET H:\tv\laatste8uurjournaal.MPG| 0 131072 |vtgcacntc1tc|
20:14:57: >> GET H:\tv\laatste8uurjournaal.MPG| 131072 131072 |vtgcacntc1tc|
20:14:58: >> GET H:\tv\laatste8uurjournaal.MPG| 262144 131072 |vtgcacntc1tc|
... until ..
20:15:43: >> GET H:\tv\laatste8uurjournaal.MPG| 366330840 131072 |vtgcacntc1tc|
20:15:43: >> GET H:\tv\laatste8uurjournaal.MPG| 366461912 131072 |vtgcacntc1tc|[/size]
After this last GET command, it automatically stops, and continues with next recorded file on my harddisk. However, the recording of the TV-programme continues, and the actual size is "a few minutes" longer...
So, if the firmware would ask again after the original end ...:
SIZE H:\tv\laatste8uurjournaal.MPG|
and if the new size is bigger than before, continue with ...
GET H:\tv\laatste8uurjournaal.MPG| 366352384 131072 |vtgcacntc1tc|
etc.
Then - apart from a small hickup perhaps - the show would go on..
Another solution might be that pclink/freekiss could give back a filesize larger than the actual size. Maybe that is easier to make/implement.
Who'd need a 558 with this working!
Couple of things I'd really like to see on my dp-1500...
Ability to swap between progressive & interlace output via a button on the remote control - the pain of leaving it on the wrong setting when I've finished with the projector (progressive) and want to watch DVD's on the TV (interlace) is too much. I can't use progressive output as the family would get too confused! :D
Simultaneous S/PDIF output and analogue stereo output (I thought all DD chipsets produced a down-mixed analogue 2 channel output from a 5.1 source?)
Being able to hold down the FWD button on an mpg file instead of having to stab it over and over again to jump through a movie (non-VCD/SVCD, just playing an MPG burnt on a DVD-R).
I'm sure there's more.....

Subtitles of cause, I am not "into" subtitles myself but many software players and VobSub can play subtitles from within the RAR archive , so many people keept them this way and now want them to play on KiSS too.

A full power down feature on the hdd on DP-558.
A power down , when the maschine is on stand by.
So the hdd doesnt spinn , when not in use.

I would like a fw with a robust "state machine" for handling the remote control. If you wait a long while every time you press any button on the remote and press the remote button firmly every time the player doesn't hang. In my oppinion that shouldn't be a big issue to fix, but I guess it depends on the fw structure ...
Hi there!
It would be great if a search function was included when trying to find songs (mp3's). I have approx 17000 songs on my harddrive which were made available to listen on my KISS 1500s. However it is a nightmare trying to play a specific one as it takes ages to get to the correct folder. A search utility which contains the following keys: folder, file or folder & file would be a great improvement.

Hi all,
* Clearer display indicating if dp-588 has scheduled recording, is in
standby, is on, is recording, ....
* Multifunctional: recording has to start when using dp-558 to watch dvd,
watch television through dp-558
That you can't play content from HDD when recording, that I understand but that you can't use your player when recording, that I don't understand.

I would like to have a possibility to turn on/off Anti-Aliasing on Subtitle font (i know thats impossible but Subject is " Which features would you like to see from Kiss or a modder" :D )
Support pcmcia card version II - aka Cardbus cards. The kernel is without
cardsbus support (thats why some d-link wifi netcards does'nt work). But the
label on the back of the 15xx says :
PCMCIA SLOT TYPE I/II.
I guess that was a little :P from Kiss.
I would like to see a firmware that would work 110%. No bugs, no excuses...
Than i would like it to cover all Divx, Xvid, etc...ALL codecs. Like the latest yamada.
I want to start a poll about the grey-background behind the subtitles.
I think this is a option everybody like, remove the grey-background!
There are more changes that people like to see but, this is 1 that could be changed/fixed for all K|i|S|S players!
So I hope the ADMIN / MOD guy's will start one.

- ISO mounting support - so you can mount the .iso files over the network maybe
- internet browser, to fully support browsing only features
- scheduled recordings, so you can repeat the recording program say every week

KML command PLAYMEDIA should also support movies so I can "dress up" the user interface myself with KMA, ie using thumbnails to select movies from my network drive.
I would be more than satisfied if my player actually worked without any trouble and played it's movies like it's supposed to. Until then I'm not in for extra features. Get it running first, than think of extra features.
On second thought, yes, an option to switch those blue lights on my dp1000 off would be nice. It can be done. The patched firmware from BIG does that.
The ability to use two- language channels would be a great start.
Some TV stations are broadcasting in two-channel sound. The first channel is normally reserved for the dubbed language e.g. in a film, whereas the second broadcast in the original soundtrack. It shouldn't be that difficult to implement this as most TV adapters are born with this ability. I would really like if I could record films from the German, French or Italian TV channels and keep the original sound, instead of getting the dubbed version. (This of course is valid in particularly for Switzerland)
I've asked KiSS for this feature, but I was told that, that it might would appear in a future fw. Well let's see :?

Possibility to read vob files larger than 2GB
Possibility to play webradio broadcasted in ogg vorbis or wma
A patch for linux does exist to make it possible for the OS to handle files over 2GB so.....maybe it is possible to patch kiss fw as well ?
I would like for example in 290-291 hibrid DP450-DP1000 PAL firmware improved loading of subtitles like in ET 2.8.3 for KiSS 450 (subtitle file didn't have to have the same name like movie file)
link here:

thanx!
This would be cool... a Player with an USB port that could support USB hard drives or CD/DVD... and of course USB FLASH MEMORY
For me, the most annoying think in my DP508 is the fast fw fast rw that does not work in real time.
Other very cheaper players can do this, why could kiss players not?
Another thing:
reorganize the root menu : I would expect to have a DVD menu to access the files on the DVD-rom. We are able to choose between hd, network, but no possibility to surf thru the DVD's files directory. To perform that, I must shutdown the Kiss, and power it back. Loss of time and energy.
I would like to see webradio recording
My wishlist for the Fixed and final firmware for DP-450.
i might add that points 6 and 7 might not be firmware related.
Points 1 to 5 just need to be fixed as i've seen some of them working
in previous versions. and i don't feel like flashing my player for every
different movie to play correct.
1: Play XVID without FourCC error
(have several discs and they all played excellent before)
2: When playing DVD containing videoclips random lockups occur.
(always did, always at another point. power off is only workaround
and i think the files are ok because i've played them all.)
3: Some DVD's don't play past the copyright message.
(They should play fine as they are originals)
4: Drive being able to read Both DVD +R and -R and DL
5: Would be great to control the DP-450 basic functions without
remote control. Try playing a few discs containing avi/mpeg files
when you misplaced your remote. your stereo/video/cd-player all
support it.
------ not very important or no FW issue -------
6: I experienced stuttering in several DIVX movies.
(always when disc 2 is inserted, disc 1 is fine. firmware or bad split?)
7: Some DIVX movies are not in sync with subtitles.
(not sure this is firmware related)
8: Slightly larger subtitles would be appreciated.
9: DivX 6 support?
i might add that i'm a bit disappointed to read the next firmware will be
the final as i haven't seen a 100% working firmware for my machine yet
and somehow i'm not completely convinced about the next version.
i wonder why
I own a DP508 player.
I would love that it were included support for the following formats (both from the internal HDD when applicable, and from PC Link connectivity):
- M4A audio format
- MP4 audio format
- WAV (not supported from PC Link from NSLU2)
Thanks
my wishlist :
1) correct wifi bugs. When link is down (because of other Kiss bugs), you need to unplug/replug the device. it should remount the network device, and keep on playing the movie.
2) DIVX: much better fast forward. By now it is unusable.
3) DIVX: the ability to sync subtitle with video. most of the time subtile is not synchronized, so it is unusable.
4) DIVX: anamorphic PAL for 16:9 screens. For DVD it is ok, not for DIVX ... this is really a shame.
5) play Matroska MKV format
6) more radios available, bookmarks for them, add custom radio (in realaudio or other formats)
7) save the elapsed time when playing divx and dvd before swithing of, so that when you switch on the device, you can keep on playing the right movie at the right time. This functionality exists in many DVD players.

It would be freaking awesome to be able to see more than 1000 songs / items on a playlist.
( Just realized I'm 'new on mpc', even though I registered back in '03 :) )
A fw that can read DVD-DLs. The drive (1712?) already reads it (connected to a pc).
Ability to play Internet TV in formats like RealPlayer and Windows Media
to echo what others have said, I'd love to see anamorphic display for DivX/Xvid files. I've gone from a cheap £30 divx player which player everything perfectly, to the KiSS DP-1504 which sort of plays stuff some of the time :D
Thank god for the ethernet port, its saving grace!

Hi,
I really need to be able to stream DVD's from my network onto the kiss player. This is impossible now because you cannot select the audio or subtitle stream.
The player can do this when i first burn all the files onto a DVD, so why not when streamed from PC-Link? The IFO file is there as well. This way to me it is not a network DVD player what is why i bought it.
I really hope they can make this work soon, even if a small workaround would be needed but i am not going to convert all my network DVD's to DIVx with subtitles because that takes forever.
Please fix this kiss!
It will never become possible on KISS players.
The only players that can handle raw DVD/ISO are types like TivX and iZak.
(not over the network, no one can handle that)
Couldt it be possible with this format ???
http://www.ratdvd.dk
Its a rather interesting project as far as i have understood, but i have no knowlege if there is any way to support it on the kiss player.

This would even be better then Nero MPEG4 support. Is KISS going to support this?
I'd really like to be able to play while recording.
I can't understand why this isn't available (at least in my DP-558). The hardware supports it, because it does timeshifting. But if I come home during a scheduled recording, I can't start watching it from the beginning while it finishes recording. And I can't play back one file whilst recording another.
Since timeshifting works just fine, this must surely just be a fw limitation? Anyone want to take up the challenge?
JAH
I'd love a "Reset-Button-in-a-Box", since my fucked up DP-558 freezes often (especially if you accidently gives it too many commands at once to handle). It's hella annoying to have to get up from your chair or whatever, to reach the power button on the machine.
Besides.. I've given up on getting KiSS to ever replace/repair anything.. it takes more of my time than it is really worth. Buying another brand will eventually come my way, then living without the connection to my computer will be alright, as long as I GET A DVD-HD RECORDER THAT ACTUALLY WORKS! Ahh.. there, in your fat faces. I am ashamed myself being an engineer from Denmark, that other companies can release such a pile of junk at the price of +4000 kr. or more. I should call them more often to tell them how much they really SUCK. FU KiSS Company, if one of you ever read this, I hope you sincerely feel my anger.
Over and out..
Just wrote my own thread before i noticed this topic:
http://www.mpcclub.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=5381
"I was wondering if it would be possible for KiSS to include a PAL60 selection in the menu?
I had this selection on my old Nintaus DVD-N9901 and that made me able to watch NTSC movies with no small "jumps" in the picture every few seconds when the camera is panning and no corruption in the subtitles on NTSC titles. This is the only gripe i have about the DP-1000 that there is corruption in the subtitles on NTSC titles and the small "jumps" in the picture..
Basicly PAL60 combines the PAL picture line count with the NTSC 60Hz picture output. I always had the Nintaus running PAL60 because that way i could watch PAL and NTSC movies without me knowing the difference. As it is now with only the possibility to choose PAL or NTSC (which my TV doesn't support) and i can tell the NTSC titles from the PAL clearly, especially because of the subtitles.
I've actually noticed it's the same with NTSC DivX movies and the subtitles.
I just thought i'd suggest it inhere as you Hi-Jack seems to have pretty good contacts to KiSS."
Oh yeah I've found another issue that is bothering me about the KiSS DP-1000. There is no way to show via the OSD (OnScreen Display) how long the movie has played, how much time is left of the playing movie and that stuff. I had that feature on the Nintaus DVD-9901N also.
Would that be possible to implement in a FW update?
The minimum we should see on the firmware is an option to sort files on the HD !!!

I support the Play While Recording suggestion.
Hi!
I would love it, if I could get a function that enables both digital and analog sound, sp I don't have to switch between them when I watch dvd or a recording.
I support the Play While Recording suggestion.
It's indeed a pain in the ass that its not possible!
Also I support the power button on the remote option :P
Like 85 % of the population i'm also a lazy git ... and getting up to reach it @ the player kinda blows :P
I would like my DP500 to be abble to read the new CD or DVD with copy protection like a basic 30? machine.
I'd like to see at least once a year a firmware without bug. Thanks to kiss to hire programmers.
I support the Play While Recording suggestion.
Me too
Whoa! This thread slowly went gigantic!
I didn't read it all, I must admit. Nevertheless I have another request.
Since I own an old retroprojection maxi-screen, which has a lot of overscan of its own, I'd love, beside an "input pixel aspect ratio" drop-down list, a percent overscan value. This would be another trivial task for any programmer, but definitely a kick-ass feature for those (many) who still can't afford (or don't want to buy) a digital device, i.e. plasma/LCD.
Newbies translation: the overscan is a behavior of all analog video devices, which usually project a slightly larger image than the screen they're projecting on, causing a portion of it to fall outside the screen. The resulting effect is the feeling of an undesired extra-zoom. This is not a KiSS defect, but a tipical approach of the analog world. If my player could add and extra black frame to the source, slightly squeezing it towards the center, I'd enjoy my movies much more, since I could see the whole stage, not a cropped part of it.

Well, what I can't understend is why people keep adding to this thread while KiSS continues (for 5 years already) to ignore this requests ...
Personally I strongly doubt too that our requests will be even read by those at KiSS.
I guess everybody is just dreaming of Cisco releasing the source code and some modder doing the trick.
When will be russian Secam in dp-558?
And i need it too!!!
(Russian SECAM)
I would a to see a listing of all wishes in the opening-post
(instead of going through 12 pages to see if I got something new)

Like anyone reads this thread ...
well the perfect system for me would:
allow playback / showing while recording, or recording two at a time (ie two tuners)
audio delay setting
audio level per channel
dvb-t support in the tuners
dab support
no macrovision crap (ie: ability to do 720p 1080 etc)
searching for channels on webradio
web videostreaming (ex. shoutcast)
wma support
ability to set number of channels viewed in the online epg (ie: instead of just 7, let me have 30, and then just scroll)
Wishlist for DP-1504/8:
- NFS
- streamripper support at the internet radio GUI
(not shure, if this is already done)
jukebox system for playing audio, ideally with cover etc.

And attached cofee maker :)
hmmm I got one of those
http://www.miele.de/mdb/image/13280.jpg
but it sure would be neat if I could controll it through the epg :D
guess my only really wish would be better codec support :D
got a lot of ogm's and recent avi's which are offcourse not working
don't want to convert all of them since that would take a lifetime
Sqweekie
some one wanted ntsc playback, in the new firmware:
Pressing EJECT - BACK - 4 - 5 - 6 on the remote resets the Output to NTSC
Pressing EJECT - BACK - 1 - 2 - 3 on the remote resets the Output to PAL
this is from http://www.kiss-technology.com/?p=changelogdp558&v=users
:D

Matroska is dying.
Yep , but haven't died yet and having to reencode all old movies is rather anoying , don'tt you think ?

Not really. I'm under no illusion that the KiSS players will ever play EVERY codec.
One small simple thing...
Get get support in kml to control the pc-link player. Or... get PLAYMEDIA to support plain mpeg files.
Everything needed for it is already in there!..
For playing a file from a share.
/fileplayer.bin PC2 <full path and filename> <ip>
For playing a file from a web-server.
/fileplayer.bin AVW <path on webserver+filename> <ip>
Simple enough,
If href prefix is file: read from local fs
If href prefix is http: read from the network (only AVW?)
If href prefix is pclink: execute the fileplayer with the PC2 option.
With these options it would be so damn easy to create a nice kml media-server frontend for this box and stream live-tv or whatever from whatever box you want since you could then have a number of pclink-servers to fetch material from and one single server in the middle that keeps track of everything....
The main problem i have with the lack of mpeg support in http streams (or if the new option would be added) is that i cannot stream any live tv or recorded shows from my MythTV box with a PVR150 card (hw mpeg2 encoder) without having to reencode the stream before sending... and that's just not fun on my VIA Epia 800Mhz board :P
And a second request that would be nice if the first one is added.. option to get the kiss to load the default kml page on boot... =)

Yes want this, or under a button on the remote
I'd like to see playback of uncompressed, streaming audio.
for the wishlist....
- a compilation of all wishes in the openingpost, so you can see if your wish has been wished.
- why is there no slo-mo on a KiSS?
2 wishes from me too:
1: possibility to show the remaining time of a track when playing DVDs
2: beep when hitting a button on the remote control
to 1: When playing files from the harddisk you can press Menu to see a progress bar and the complete playtime of a movie. When playing DVDs this is not possible. I´d like to see how much longer a movie is. It would suffice to see this on the LCD display (as every other DVD player does).
to 2: Not very important, but I´d like to have a beep sound whenever I activate a function on the DP-558. The sound should be made by the recorder, not the remote control of course. ;)

for me it would be great to have an videotext feature for my kiss.
i do not have videotext in my tv so if it could be in my kiss, this would be wonderful.
