I know this is a basic and "stupid" question, but I just replaced my Toshiba drive with an Asus E616A....
For the moment, I use official Kiss firmware 1.1.3...
I'm interested in Stage2 (B) firmware, but I read that I couldn't install it with another DVD player than Kiss official ones... Is it still true? Does anybody tried with an Asus drive? Doesn't it work?

Thanks a lot in advance

one person (forgot his name) told me he could not use his DVD for a firmware_bootdisk (so its not stage2, its any bootdisk, also original kiss)
Other people told me there was no problem at all

So my advise is to give it a try
if it fail to boot then there is no harm done. It will not break anything so worst case is that it will not boot (but that mean that original kiss 1.1.4 will also not boot)

if it will not boot then you can simply eject the disc and original firmware will still be in place

I replaced Toshiba drive by an Asus E616A too and I'm running Stage2 FW without any troubles. Even switched few times back to FW 1.1.4 and reinstalled stage2 again without any troubles.
So using stage2 FW no problem at all with Asus E616A

As it's my first post, first Hello everybody and many thanks to MartinB and the MPC community. And don't care to much about my english (i'm french).

I bought a second-hand DP 558 (300€) one month ago. Perfect aspect but, first bad surprise : impossible to read any commercial DVD. Despite still one year garanty, and after reading all details on changing DVD reader on MPC, i bought an ASUS 616A (25 €). Very easy to replace it.

I made 5 FTP transfert without problem until last monday (except a very low speed of 700 b/s). I first thought that was due to new connexion : i change direct connexion PC-Kiss for a switch as i plug a Freebox in the network. FTP speed was suddenly better (1,5 M/s) but after 10 to 15 minutes, communication was no more possible between Kiss and PC (i'm using Filezilla). Even EPG refuse to work. I retry a direct link Kiss-PC : no change. The only way to resolve it was to reboot Kiss player. And then, still the same problem with FTP.
So i decided to install Stage 2 and... 20 minutes after... new test ... and everythings works well (1,4 Mb/s). Thanks MartinB !

So, one reflexion :
- is it possible that FTP problems are related to where the files are located on the HDD ?
- and why FTP speed suddenly change from 0.7 to 1.5 ?

Kiss DP 558
Window XP sp2
Martinb Stage 2
Freebox and ADSL TV on PC

- 1 no, its related to the linux kernel (stage2 use the "old" kernel of the 1.1.3 firmware
- 2 because your kissplayer was not in "standby/off" while you where transferring ?.
If you go into the menu of the kiss and then do a transfer you will see your speed drop to 0,7. If you "turn-off" the kiss your speed will be 1.5
