View Full Version : ATT: DP-600 DVD Playback Problems

Hi-Jack
31-03-06, 21:08
We have seen several reports now about KiSS DP-600 not playing Commercial DVD.
We have tried multiple ourselves on 4 units and can not come up with
issues so we assume some units have again the "famous Toshiba DVD
Drive" trouble in combination with KiSS.

If you experience problems with playing DVD, please file RMA immediately
and get your unit replaced or send it back to the store if you are within the
first 7/14 days of purchase for replacement.

You can report your issues concerning DVD Playback in this thread!

Regards
Hi-Jack

Thanks Hi-Jack for this Information!

I will receive my KISS next week and hopefully won't have any problems with the drive. But it's really great what you are doing for all the people out there to help them solve the problems!

I Just tried two original DVD, it shows me only first frame of DVD where are written copyright and freeze. But stop and return button on remote control are working
No problems with these DVD on other players
DVD is produced by http://www.acmefilm.com/ in Lithuania
Region 2 & 5
Type DVD-5 or DVD-9

I also tried to make DVD backup with DVD Decryptor, result the same

When i playing Divx or xvid or other stuff written to DVD is no any problem

Maybe there are some problems with regions or KISS not supporting all protection modes

I don't know how to tell to repeat this problem in worst case i can give DVD backup ISO image, but it is 4.5GB

I dont know if this is relevent - but:

My unit worked fine until I tried to play R2 Madagascar
I inserted the disc and as the drawer shut - the Front Panel LCD lit every cell and it has stayed that way since......

Perhaps it thought something on the disc was firmware????

It now plays Madagascar, but the LCD is still bust!

got a problem with hdmi i think..

I tried playing 3 commercial dvd's. Metallica - Some Kind Of Monster (r2) , independence day (r1) and finding nemo (r2). When i hit play button the tv doesn't find my hdmi signal. Just the sound is working. The tv says: Searching for signal.. If i eject the dvd, the signal is detected and no problem at all. I am using a hdmi--> dvi cable.

Then I tried with a burned one, and there were no problems at all. Movie starts up just as it was before with my Pioneer DV-454.

Is this the "known" hdmi issue or perhaps soemthing else ?

I know my player, witch i bought in sweden is region 2 protected. But that shouldn't stop to play r2 movies i bought here in .se

Any one got clues ?

Is the DP600 directly connected to your TV or via a switch (Receiver, switch, ...)?

I have the same problem when the DP600 is connected via my Pioneer Receiver. Directly connected to my TV everyting works fine.

I had a similar problem.
I tried to play a DVD which I made a month ago (this DVD is ok with my pioneer DCS 525 and with samsung HD-950).
Well I put my DVD inside and after 2 minutes the display went off
What? The display went off!! I had to restart the player and then take my DVD out...
Before that, the playback of divx and xvid was ok.
My player is connected to my LCD Loewe Xelos A 32 via HDMI.
I don't know if it's the problem described by Hi-Jack.
What's the file RMA?

Seems like your TV does not have HDCP!!
Nothing wrong with the signal in your case.
Your TV must have HDCP to play commercial DVD over HDMI or it will not
show anything on display (it's copy protection like Macrovision or CSS). test
by making a backup of the DVD and play that one... you'll see it will work.

Hi Hi-Jack,
maybe this is the right thread.
Yesterday i reported a problem with kiss dp-600: I tried to play the DVD of my wedding but nothing.
So this morning I tried to play an original DVD (not one but one of the most amazing DVD: the lord of the rings - the return of the king estended edition) and the kiss dp-600 was not able to play it.
So to confirm it I RECORDED ALL WITH MY CAMERA SONY.
I trasformed the video (3 minutes) from DV format to mpeg 1 and it's size is 40MB.
SO HI-JACK TELL ME WHERE I CAN PUT THIS VIDEO SO YOU CAN TELL US SOMETHING.
I paid 350 euro for the kiss and I want it can play DVD!!! :x
This my test:

kiss dp-600
LCD Loewe Xelos A32
Connection HDMI
DVD: Lord of the rings - the return of the king (extended edition)

What does it mean "famous Toshiba DVD Drive"?
How can I know if my kiss dp-600 has this Toshiba DVD Drive? :?:

The problem is no Toshiba driver. I use AUS drive and they dont play Original DVD. The problem is different.

The problem is no Toshiba driver. I use AUS drive and they dont play Original DVD. The problem is different.

Most probably a powersupply problem, I also had problems with my dp-500.
I replaced the drive and after several weeks the new drive started to have read problems again.
It turned out that the voltage to the drive was out of limits 12V -> 13,6V
According to the manufactorer of the powersupply (Achmea) it has a tolerance in output voltage of -/+ 5% (so it must be between 11,4V and 12,6 Volt)
I did reported this to Kiss (28feb2006) and they are still working on it!

It seems that many has this playback problem. I tried to mail RMA but it takes 2 days for them to answer every time. I'm afraid that if I send my player back to the place where I bought it, I will get another player with the same problem because they are from the same delivery.

Defective DVD drive here aswell. When I insert DVD, Play and Resume Play options appear, but nothing happens when I press them. Tried with HDMI (plugged to Panasonic PT-AE700) and SVIDEO, but in vein. Bought my device today, gonna replace it tomorrow. Store has only one unit (the one in display) left, gotta settle with that one.

It's the second time for me!!
Well the conclusion is this: after I tried a dp-600 and after I had this problem, I send it back. After a day they send me the second dp-600 and yesterday I tried it. Well I updated the fw and then.... nothing. It can't read any DVD!!
Stop: I can't spend a lot of my time to try something which has this big bug!! So today I'll send it back but this time I choose another product.

I have the same problem and going to send my player back. I almost asume that i'm going to get one with the same error. My hope is not high.

I also have difficult to understand why the Toshiba-driver should be the problem. I cant imagine that toshiba produce so many drives with faults.

For me it sounds more like a "communication" problem between the DP-600 system and the toshiba driver. In my world it should be possible to update the software.

To followup, I returned the device to store today and they replaced it. With one put to display couple of days ago. I knew it had working DVD so I accepted it. Just updated the firmware and DVD playback is fine. Not that much noise in the drive either.

Question really is, if this problem is something that could develop over time, because replacing device after, say, 6 months won't be as easy. I really feel for those who had to resort to net store to buy device and need to go through all the hassle.

Someone release info how to replace drive with LG or some other reliable and silent drive, please!

Lord_Kiron
07-04-06, 14:08
Can't be 100% sure but based on DP-558 expirience it does develops over time.
My DP-558 was readng OK first then after several months stoped reading most of the disks (not suddenly, just slowly "readabnility" reduced over time ) then I RMAed , DVD was replaced then couple of month and ... same thing , then I put Asus drive myself, then another couple of months and ... same thing started tohappen to Asus, can't be 100% because then DP-558 died completely and I junked it.

I have a problem playing back some DVDs. It took me a while to notice, never saw the behaviour before the firmware upgrade, but that might be a coincidence.

They play fine for say 15 minutes, and then stutter and stop completely. They can be restarted, skip to a bit later in the movie, and will then stutter and freeze again. The same DVDs work fine on my other player.

Does this sound like the same hardware issue, so I should RMA the player?
Thinking of waiting until after next firmware upgrade, just in case...

Second Exchange DP-600 works fine on the network but I can't play any comercial DVD (but self-burned DVDs containing divx movies (even double layer!) played finde. Now I ordered the third exchange model. If that has still problems, sorry kiss, money back.

Hi all,

I received my DP-600 last week, got home and connected it.
All went well until the part when I wanted to play a DVD, the player showed me the beautiful Kiss logo and nothing more...
I tried all kinds of disks, commercial and recorded the same thing happened.
I took apart the player and connected the drive to my PC and discovered that the didn't had a region setting...
I selected region 2 and installed the drive back in the player and everything worked fine :D
So, if you are not afraid of using a screwdriver and have problems with DVD playback you can try this "fix"...

But from what I read in this thread many people used the warranty two or three times until they got lucky and some guy at Kiss shipped them a unit that happens to have the correct region setting...
Then again, that's good Quality Control from Kiss... :D

Hi,
You just have to remove the drive from the player, use an IDE cable to connect it to a PC. In Windows after the drive is detected by the OS open the properties window of the drive, select the region tab and then u just have to select region 2...
Click ok, shutdown the computer remove the drive, connect it to the player and everything should work.

I do not know is this issue new to 3.0.34?

I have my player set to RPC1 region free and Region 1 and 2 are playing as long as they are not Double side discs (you know the ones Widescreen one side, Full Screen the other)
Any of these discs whether region 1 or 2 will not play, just hangs forever until a black screen like as if it is trying to play and only then after waiting 5 mins can you eject the disc.

Anybody seen this issue before?

I just posted this on another thread put I think this was the better place for it!
