Dvico have announced the 5101 which should come out before the end of the year. They have confirmed it will support H.264/AVC in hardware. Sounds cool.

Anyone heard anymore about it?

Cheers

I have not heard of it, but I'll take one please :) Right now I use the Tvix in the livingroom and a modified xbox in my bedroom. The day a new model arrives I'll give my Xbox to my kid and get the latest gadget :) )

Sent an email for confirmation about the 5101 release date, amongst other things.

I sent the following:-
Just an idea, but do you plan on using a thumbnail view for videos?

Perhaps, if it is too slow, then could you use a similar idea to the tvix.jpg file to produce wallpapers. For example, if every video file had a jpg file with the same name (say fixed at 50x50 pixels, so is fast to load), then could show this image as it's thumbnail. If no image then just show a standard video picture.

Already I think the M5000U is the best player around, but with a video thumbnail feature it would be a "killer" feature, if you know what I mean. Would be great, and be a similar look a HD-PC.

Also I am looking forward to the 5101. Do you have a release date for the UK?

And they replied with:-
Actually, we are talking internally similar idea. However, I can not tell you we will implement or not. I am not the one who make a decision. ;-)

About 5101,
We do not have a schedule currently. We hope we can release end of thrid quarter or fourth quarter at least. This is becase of chip vender schedule.

Hmmm, hopefully the chip vender won't let them down. But if they are only blaming the vender then they must be pretty much finished on the product itself. Tops :)

Good stuff though about the thumbnails. Hopefully they will do it would definitely improve the GUI no end over just about every other HD player out there (non-HDPC).

Hmmm. Just noticed that the answer included a winky smiley after the saying he wasn't the one who made the decisions. I would normally translate that to mean that maybe he is and just isn't allowed to admit it, or he has some pull. C'mon matey say it's a "do or die" mod. :) Not quite, but the Tvix's already nice interface would be definitely at the top of the bundle with this.

Cheers

We'll be visiting them at IFA :-)
Most likely, soon after availability a unit is shipped towards MPC for
detailed review... Always fun for us to play with the TViX toys...

Enjoy

How long did it take the 5000 to come out from when it was announced? Just to get a hint about how long we should have to wait for the 5101

We expect the 5101 for release end of the year, early next year.
We'll need to talk with Dvico before making an assessment and the level of
consumer readyness, we'll have to see it at IFA first :-)

Might become released a little earlier though...

Anyone know if the hdd interface will be SATA in this model? IDE drives are getting more sparse for every day...

Another thing, what drives would you guys recommend I know from building a silent regular PC that the western digital WD5000KS is supposed to be the most silent drive on the market (silentpcreview.com) but what about reliability? Any recomendations?

I'm about to buy one of these but I'm considering waiting until the 5101 is out...

I think they will still be IDE as it is based on the M5000U model. We'll know
for sure after IFA in 14 days. Best drives are the high capacity hard drives
NL35 series from Seagate... They are made for endurance andp performance
but come only in SATA models so if SATA supported, those are
the drives I would recommend.

Thanks, I'll wait and see what IFA reveals before buying anything then!
Shouldn't it be a simple thing to change IDE->Sata and make the connectors more robust. I can live with a IDE interface but I would really of course prefer a SATA interface.
