View Full Version : My marvellous TviX HD M-5000U
After my disaster with the KiSS DP-558, I decided to use the KiSS as PVR only and give the TViX HD M-5000U a try. After reading so much positive comments about it.
The first impressions are awesome, it starts with little details like:
* 2 power cords (one for the place in the TV cabinet and one for the road)
* Duracell batteries for the remote control, can't remember that that ever happend before.
After installing the HDD and filling it with some content this delighting experience continues.
Ready Set Go: Wow, it does what it's supposed to do!
Streaming over the Netgear power plugs, that didn't work with the KiSS, works flawless with the TViX. So they must have been right, the network is faulty.
(Btw. I think there are two possibilities whats wrong with my DP-558, the NIC has a glitch or it has something to do with the weak power supply)
Divx or Xvid files the old player refused to process, are displayed without any issues. USB sticks are recognised and mounted with the same easiness as everything else.
I am so exalted that finally I have a player that's worth it's price.
If you don't need an optical drive, it's a definitive "Buy that thing".
If a HB-100 DVB-T version will become available, I sell the KiSS or rip it apart. It depends on the money I can recover from selling that junk.
Glad you like it.
There's more good news as Dvico will show a TV Tuner, DVB-T Tuner and
wireless options at IFA for expansion on the TViX M-5000U :-)
Well,
I just have to agree with rage.
The Tvix 5000 totally ROCKS when compared to a KiSS.
I bought a DP-600 first. Returned it and bought a Tvix.
Less bells and whistles but it works, and does it good!
Now if I only could get it to connect with NFS to my Maxtor Shared Storage.
(Which is possible according to other persons so its probably just my stupid mistakes  )
BUY THIS so that Dvico gets more money and develops more firmware releases. FTP access, and Shoutcast support has been "promised".
Auto switch 50/60 Hz output depending on video content is already available in beta fw
(Makes stuttering disappear for especially for HD videos)

Yep, my old BLT is looking a bit rubbish now. Especially for NTSC stuff. TViX totally beats it for playback. Just get a wireless link or USB key transfer to HD onto it (both being developed apparently) and thats good for me for transferring files without mucking about with cables. :D Get that thumbnails for videos working (which they are looking at) and pretty much is sown up IMHO.
Might just wait for the 5101 to come out before putting my BLT out to pasture and getting a 3rd TViX. :) And one day I will get off my arse to plug in the DVI into my projector to check out hi-def
Cheers
Just downloaded FW 1.8.3, beta firmware which includes FTP uploads plus some more! This machine rocks, I'm telling you!
I thought this did have an optical drive? :?:
You can use an external USB DVD drive.
You can not read commercial DVDs with it though...
/J
No, it's fine without DVD player - I have an Oppo :) In fact I am looking for one without a DVD player.
I find it almost a shame such a good device get's so small attention.
Everyone should have at least 1 :-)
I never stopped using it since the first day it arrived and i don't remember
it let me down even once! With the new FW 1.8.3, the fact I need to
disconnect it to refill is over as well. Only thing we need further is Shoutcast
and then it'll be the perfect little player for my private use...
Enjoy
Hi-jack
I've been thinking more and more about buying this player.
There are some things that I'm not sure about.
I've got 4 HDD's with 3 or 4 partitions each.
Can anyone tell me if all these partitons will be visible
under NFS. I'm not that of a network sharing wiz..
I have a Kiss DP-500 and using EzLinkNG.
I like EZ a lot and wonder if NFS is as versatile as EZ ?
Hi-Jack's review of Tvix 5000u said that networking was a
big security issue. Is it still ?
Thanks
Tage
No it is no longer an issue...
Several updates have fixed alll the issues and comments made.
The disk to be inserted in the TViX is internal, so best is adding a
300/40GB drive in 1 partition. You can connect external USB drives as well
over USB 2.
EzLinkNG is a Database driven streaming software :-)
Can't be compared to the TViX M5000U.
I'm going to buy a Tvix without a internal HDD first.
So number of partitons/shares I mentioned before is not a issue anymore.
I'm using 10 shares/folders in EZ. That's ok in Tvix also?
Btw i'm using 1 internal HDD and 3 USB2 ekternal HDD's in EZ.
2 external usb2 HDD's will be connected to Tvix's usb ports.
Thanks for speedy reply.
Quote Hi-Jack's : Several updates have fixed alll the issues and comments made.
I'll assume number of folder/shares
is possible as I asked about earlier.
You can have 4 different network shares on the Tvix.
That is 4 different IP addresses.
The path to each share is ALWAYS /tvixhd1
(Until they fix it as they implied they eventually would)
So if you use 1 PC you'll have to create shortcuts or orginize folders somehow so that they all are accessible from the /tvixhd1 share.
To get better performance you should use NFS as network sharing protocol.
Tvix deliveres a small application that does all the above for you and exports it using NFS.
/J
I'm planning on using NFS.
As long as I can use shortcuts for each folder I have
movies in; I'm good.
I'm only using 1 PC.
Btw; no problem using 2 Tvix in different rooms
streaming HD material at the same time?
I guess it's a speed or a router issue?
USB sticks working ok for copy now.
Might use a internal HDD later.
Waiting for a review of the PVR module...
Thanks for reply; off to order my Tvix NOW!
Using different open sessions with TViX depends on the source, not on the
TViX as these units operate independantly (using SMB you should be able
to stream to 4 units at the same time as long as your network and storage
device can handle that)
Enjoy
Hi-Jack
Did anyone reviewed both of them and compared them to each other? Why should i buy TViX 5000 over Rapsody N-35? :)
Because TViX is simply cooler and better in my opinion.
The company is much more responsive with updates and user updates and
most of all, they work with MPC while Rapsody does not, meaning they
could not care less...
TViX is the best available player in portable range, period! :-)
Every player can be better then they are, but it's the max.
Just got my TVIX 5000u today without HDD.
Must I have an HDD to be able to upgrade the firmware?
Got an usb 2.0 pen, but might not be usable to upgrade with this or?
Tage
This Player sound great!
I have two questions:
Are there any restrictions on how big the internal HDD or the one attached to the USB can be? Or can I just use any?
How does it compare to the Mediaman HVX-3500? The mediaman is cheaper and has a radio module so the player can send its audio signals via radio to a stereo...

Yes, as you would need to put the FW update on the hard drive and then
select it from the menu when connected to TV.

The TViX is much more advanced then the MediaMan.
TViX has network , SMB and FTP support which make it already stronger in many departments. MMan is also based on a much older chip then TViX
which does not support WMV9, Transport Streams and latest codecs (chip is
not strong enough).
Probably the reason why it is cheaper...
Falls in the same range as TViX Mini, TViX 3000 and MViX MV-4000U and
MV-5000U, which the last is practically the same as this one. Korean OEM.
It's no competition against the power of TViX.
Hard Drives, up to 500GB should not be an issue.
great, thanks for the info.
did you visit dvico at the IFA? how was berlin?
Just about got this baby setup and working how I want it now .. it's connect via NFS to my Linux box using the wireless bridge built into my Squeezebox with an internal 250Gb HDD.
Things I've found:
SMB for streaming media wirelessly is no good .. encoded files play 'ok' but DVD ISOs and IFOs stutter badly. NFS works great over wireless, but takes a little more setting up .. in Linux anyways.
HD files over wireless are no good (even using NFS).. not enough bandwidth, no biggie though as I can FTP them to the internal HDD where they play flawlessly.
..overally it's a great machine and MILES ahead of the Kiss DP600 I had briefly, I will def be buying the 264 compatible machine when it's out and the 5000 can retire to the bedroom :)

Can I use my USB2 external hard disk on the Tvix 5000 instead of installing a hard disk inside it?

No HD is needed.
I also have a tvix without a HD.
I did the upgrade over the network (cable) without any problem.

Yes :)

Any chance the Tvix 5000 will be able to play the x264 format?
No, the chip does not support it.
The new model, TViX M5101 will, but will be based on EM8522 chip
considered too light, to keep up with progress. General advice for H.264 is
to wait on the EM8634 chip based players.
Enjoy

Thnx for that reply Hi-Jack
