I received an M-5000 yesterday which I purchased from Pixmania.com but am having a problem and hoping someone may be able to help me!

The M-5000 is not recognising the hard drive which is a 160GB drive already installed in the unit.

On the screen that allows you to choose between hard drive/network/usb1/usb2 for files to play the hard drive icon (picture of the M-5000) is not available to select.

I understand that the drive probably needs formatting but when i connect the device to my computer via USB, the M-5000 shows 'USB ON' on the display but no new disk drive appears in 'My Computer' on the PC, so I am unable to format.

I have tried changing jumper settings on the drive in the unit. The jumper setting was originally set to 'cable select'. I have changed this to Device 0 Master. There are two alternative jumper settings for master - one for '15 heads' and the other for '16 heads'. I've tried both settings but neither make any difference. I am still unable to see the drive on my PC.

The disk appears to be operating as I can hear it spinning up when I switch the unit on.

Anyone have any suggestions as to why when I connect via USB I cannot see the drive on my computer???

I can connect an external USB drive to the M-5000 and play files without any issues.

The manual supplied in the package I received is unfortunately in French language only - I am in the UK and do not speak any French. I have downloaded the English version from the tvix website and followed all instructions but am unable to resolve the issue.

There was an addendum to the manual in the form of a single piece of paper, again written in French, which does have some instructions about formatting the drive but I am unable to read these. I have included the instructions below for reference....

thanks

French is not my native language. I got some highschool french. But nowadays you can use sites like babelfish to translate. Not a very good one, but maybe this helps.

What brand is the harddisk? Hitachi? Maxtor? Samsung? I had a problem with a refurbished Maxtor in an external usb2.0 housing. Wasn't recognised. My Hitachi was recognised without any problems.
Try putting the harddisk in your PC and format the drive there. Hope your PC will recognise it.

No new disk will appear in "My Computer" if you use windows XP.
What you need to do is:
Connect the Tvix with the drive in it so that USB on appears.
Jumper settings has to be correct of course bu I kno nothing about that.

Then on windows XP you open Control Panel.
Open Administrative Tools
Open Computer handling (This I'm unsure of because I use swedish Windows....)
In that new window you will find Disk handling under the menu/subtree Storage.
NOW You will find you USB drive in the lower right part of the window if you scroll down to it.
Now you need to initialize and create partion/s and finally format the drive.
The format part takes VERY LOOOOOONG time.

Good luck

thanks jofa/igadgetman for your helpful replies :-) and for the french translation!

I also posted this problem on the manufacturers support board and they responded within a few minutes! I've never had that experience from a manufacturer before - top marks DVICO!!

Their response was just as you said jofa - use 'Computer Manager' (handling) to first initialize, partition and format - then I should see it in "My Computer" and explorer windows.

So i've learnt something new about XP that I didn't previously know.

I will try this out when I get home tonight - thanks again for taking the time to repsond

Yeah, I had totally forgot about this sort of thing myself. Normally drives either work out of the box or you have to format them. Been a few years since I had to initialise one. Because of this I tried both my Tvixs on at least 5 different PCs (I'm a programmer; PC's seem to multiply in our homes) with no luck before Babelfishing the french manual. "Virgin disk" clicked straight away. Annoying. Also annoying habit of IT people/ blokes in general basically never reading the manual first (or at least the translated english manual on the main site).

Cheers
