View Full Version : Hi-Jack's Review TViX M-5000A (Second Edition)
Hi all,
Since we had some time spare, we started over reviewing the TViX M-5000A
since it has had sever updates since our first review in March 2006. The
result is a review more easy to read and in our new style :-)

Hi-Jack
Few questions about DivX subtitles:
1. Which national characters (codepages) are supported in DivX subtitles?
2. Which subtitle formats are supported?
3. What is configurable? (size, place on screen - higher or lower, color)
We haven't tested codepages, but if intersted to know about the support,
send us a test file and we'll check it, making some screenshots and send it
to you.
As far as shifting goes, it was nice to have on previous players but since the
subs now are bottom centered, the feature is not that important anymore,
nather are the colors with outlined fonts or background shading.
The options for colors are usually in the Setup menu so the descriptions
from the review should explain that part. I actually haven't tried placing the
subtitles elsewhere cause i had no need for it :-)
Enjoy

re 1. - CP 1250 Eastern Euroope is finally supported
- just some trick wityh changing factory setting (factory code 0609 ENGLISH CP1250PAL) to be done once, as its not visible in standard menu. I followed up guide from their forum (http://www.tvix.co.kr/ENG/FAQ/FAQM5000U.aspx?act=RD&id=124&pg=0&CATID=3&SCATID=2)
re2. - After my request (sic!) they implemented support for .txt subtitles in microDVD and TMPlayer format (MicroDVD must have fps header to be played correctly)
re3. - I agree with Jack - there is no need to place the subs elswhere as .sub format subtitles are displayed under the movie (re .3). In case of problems with subtitles I just convert them to MicroDVD .sub format using Subtitle Workshop and it plays flawlessly.
BTW I had Kiss DP-508 and still have DP-1500 for streaming avi files from PC, by TviX is far more better for this purpose. I use TvixNetShare soft from DiVCO website whicH is similiar to FreeKiss and avioids any need network security concern when using guest account as described in Hi-Jack Review.
Cheers
Kris
Hmmm....is it me or are the component connectors a bit cheap? Just connect my component plugs then removed them and the outside connector plates came completely off...hopefully I can get them back on or else return the machine.

Never had any troubles with that on my Freecom player.....grrrr....guess will be buying a DVI to HDMI cable then, bah!
No problem here with the connectors...
They are of the same quality "as the usual" players...

Monster cable have deliberate tight fitting to ensure best contact area, use the standard adaptor leads if your going to to be plugging regulary, or use the adaptor lead.
Whens the recording input adaptor lead going to be availiable?
You mean the Tuner Add on. We don't know.
The review says about limited zoom feature. :?: :?: :?:
No! It is not right :!:
I think it's perfect for movies and photos as well - I can zoom up/down (by pressing "zoom" button and after using arrow buttons) with 1% zooming steps. There is no one other player can do it. Even more - I can move picture (movie) up/down & left/right with the same tiny steps. And we do have transition effects!!!
Other... Network security - They are used now client-based software Netshare (ftp://ftp.dvico.com/Manual/TViX/TViX%20NetShare_eng.pdf) to share folders in PC (NFS mode - like other players). Forget about Guest account and slow SAMBA protocol!
I have 6 HDD in my computers + 4 External USB HDD - all of them I can SECURE use through mounted folder/subfolders (used Windows XP mount folder/disk feature).
More - about USB usage. I connected external USB DVD-drive to my player and now can easy play my DVDs (copies of original ones - means with removed protection - who cares - it's my copies on the best TAIYO YUDEN media). Also I can play DivX etc, photos and music.
Another cons in the review - display usage of file names.
What I can see it's pros. Long file names ARE SCROLLING from right to left when selected - COOL! - forget about display limitations!
More - Now in 1.9.5 firmware you HAVE:
Support browsing by icon mode
Make a empty file named as "icon.tvix" on the folder that you want to browse by icon.
The file name for the file used for the icon files is case sensitive, it must be the exact same name as the media file except that the extension must be jpg or png(if you want to use transparency, set the transparency color as 0xC8C8C8.)
To show the folder as icon, please put "folder.jpg" or "folder.png" on the folder.
The maximum icon size is 720 * 480, and the best size is 100 * 136
Hi-Jack, please, correct this issues. And what about score of this player now - 9.9
TViXfan, the review is correct. 1% increase in zoom alwyas zooms to the
center picture and you can't shift the picture so that another part of the
picture can zoomed at. (Notice the review might also be based on an older
FW.
Despite the display use of long titles, it's still not that great to be used for
offline playback (without TV) and such. Yes it's a great great player, the
best at the moment but it doesn't mean it disserves 9.9 / 10. There's more
to it then a bunch of features to reach that score whihc is based on Price /
feature comparison and in general some options could have been easier.
SMB can be done by default, it should not have to be setup by the user for
instance. It would use a scanner that lists SMB shares on your network and
offer selection of which one to use at the time you want to play anything
from on of those shares... etc...
TViX is not the only player offering these special functions (Zensonic, Ziova)
and also not the only one with the zoom stuff or transition effects. To reach
9.9 it would need H.264, WLAN integrated, be a little cheaper, have slightly
improved interface looks and design and should have automated SMB
scanning among several other improvements...
It has received the right score and at the time of review, we did make
correct comments. After that, updates are discussed in the forums...
Hello, Hi-Jack!
Thank you for your great site and your big job on it.
I was your fan since KiSS-500 was my favorite and my nickname was KiSSfan. I've got a lot useful info about KiSS products and also about other brands.
9.9 rating is my personal impression - not a real argument :D
Zoom feature works with zooming and shifting - I use it very often usually with divx and xvid non-standart rips. So I can do with picture everything + I can change contrast/brightness etc as well.
Offline playback (you meant for music) - I don't use it - I like to watch on a big screen 8O what I'll be listening while choosing
Why SMB. NFS with Netshare is faster. Anyway why I need list of shares if I can do it through Windows XP by mounting subfolders in main sharing folder:
My network system:
2 desktops (1st - 2 HDDs, 2nd - 4 HDDs)
1 laptop
4 external HDD
1 external DVD-drive
I have folder "TViX share" on disc C: in the 1st desktop which connected to the player.
Subfolders of the folder mounted as :
"DVD-drive on PC" - DVD-drive on the 1st desktop
"Downloads" - 2nd disk on the 1st desktop
"ve Watched" - 3d disk on the 1st desktop
"unwatched" - 4th disk on the 1st desktop
"foreign movies" - 1st disk on the 2nd desktop
"ours movies" - 2nd disk on the 2nd desktop
"mix" - laptop drive
"USB 1","USB 2","USB 3","USB 4" - 1st, 2nd, 3d, 4th - USB drivers
"photos" - My Photos folder on 1st desktop
"music" - iTunes folder on 1st desktop
All this folder tree I can see in my TViX and when I select some folder I right away go to one of network disks and rich all folders/subfolders there.
It's more flexible and secure.
H.264 - I agree with you - but I think it depends on sigma-chipset
WLAN - for high quality video is not fast yet (especially for HD content)
Little cheaper  - everyone wants it
Design - I realy like - anyway it's very personal
P.S. One more time Thank you for your well done work!

The purpose of valuating SMB is using it "without PC".
Don't mix purposes and reasons :-)
Wlan is usefull for a player elsewhere then your livingroom, like bedroom. I
use wlan on mine to watch series, no need for TS and HD. We approach
players towards what they could be. Same thing we look at HDMI and DVI
players that still have SCART, it reaches bigger public. It's offering options
to cover different people's needs, not just yours or mine...
TViX is the best, still an become better... That's why it doesn't have 9.9 from me :-)
