MPC announces DS-106 review from Synology!

We understand better as anyone out there, not everyone is able to afford a
full nas System like the reviewed Synology CS-406, released today. There
are smaller and even more affordable solutions available from the same
range, and that's what MPC will look at next, the Synology DS-106.

Offering the same options, features and using the same software as the
Synology CS-406, this device runs on a single Hard Drive instead of 4,
limiting the cost for the goodies to less then 50% of the previously
mentioned system.

Review expected by the end of October!

If you have time. You could test a Mailserver program on theese box'es.
I have installed phpMyAdmin and PHlyMail on my DS-101J. I don't have my own domain yet, therefore I'm only testing it on my POP3 account. The speed is not that good but that is probably caused by the limited RAM and processor of the DS-101J

Which model did you receive ? I have seen that there is an DS-106X with extra RAM for streaming purpose but only for the Switzerland.

We have received the DS-106e (with eSATA support).

There are a lot of possibilities considering it supports PHP and MySQL for
any kind or services to be developed onto this unit. For instance, I have a
full "dev" copy of this site running on it (CS-406).

If the Synology DS-106e (or DS-106j which is the same but works on IDE
hard drives instead of SATA) is picked up by the community, I can imagine
some very nice applications to be made for working with players, pictures
and all kinds of files...

The price against features is more then correct. I wish slight enhancements
in the software as mentioned in our review of the Cube Station which probably
are valid as well for the DS series as it is using the same software.

Anyway, great devices...
Look forward to some activity from the scene in the coming weeks...

Tested OsCommerce, phpbb2, phpMyAdmin and WordPress 2.0 now and all runs fine. This is an amazing device really but i remain feleling, just like the CS-406 that the software can be anhanced.

Hardware wise, excellent and absolutely recommended.
It's exactly the sme as the CS-406 (4 disk Raid based) unit, identical, except it
works with 1 drive...

Great product, ok price...
It made the review easy too as a lot of content written for the CS-406 could be
moved, altered images and made changes where needed so we have a
seperate review for this device available during next week...

I can recommend it. (more for Sybas based player owners then KISS right now)
KiSS has no abilities to talk to this unit while most others can.

Is there an installer package? (powerpc)
(DP500Serv works so kissdx should work as well)

there is no package available in ipkg update concerning dp500serv and / or kissdx.
Anyone has the file for powerpc?
