Default Transcode hardware choice

Well I wrote this about three times not but I end up waffling so here is the cut down version:
I have quite a few VOB / ISO images which I would like to convert to XviD or h.264 or something. The PC I have at the moment is not going to be up to the task as it will take me from now to the crack of doom to get my back log done. So, I think I need to upgrade my computer and wanted to know whether anyone knew of any sites which gave comparisons of various components that have a video encoding benchmark. I know I can get comparisons for Folding@Home or business orientated benchmarks but I'm just looking for "We put twenty systems up against 6 different video files and these are the results"
Can anyone give me a link or something with more weight than "You need the latest Intel" or "AMD all the way!"

(You would be appalled at how large the pre-cut down version was. 8O )

I recommend a Core i7 920 rig. If you can wait a few weeks the new Intel 1156 platform will offer similar performance at a more affordable price.
If your on a tight budget the AMD PhenomII CPU's are excellent alternatives.
