Hello,

I have a 5V 25mm Sunon fan that i plan to install in the EHP 606. Is there any 5V power source on the circuit board to run the fan ?

Just found out that the red power supply wire for the HDD is showing 5.13V in my multimeter.... Now the new question is ...can we tap power from it ? I wonder if my Seagate HDD would be starved for current

No, I wouldn't do that. The board can be damaged. It would be more practical and safer to have external power. If you plan to place the fan inside the unit the external wire can easily pass through the side vents.

Also, it would be safer to use laptop 2.5" HDD inside the Elektron (like me) as it does NOT get hot, and at the same time leaves sufficient space for air circulation as opposed to 3.5" desktop HDD.

I have placed Magic Notebook Idea Cooling fan on top on the 2.5" HDD inside the unit, facing the right side vents. It is designed to blow out the hot air, so it works quote efficiently.

thanks reju...but the idea of buying a replacement 2.5 HDD is not an option at the moment. I already have two sunon fans with me and I plan to fire them up with some sort of power from within the box.

The options:
1. Tapping power from under the USB ports ? Do you think it would help ?
2. Tapping 12V from power supply port and then connecting the fans in series
3. Connecting a Y cable to the HDD power cable and connecting the 5V to fans

Which of the options is safest?

How are you going to place the fan? It should be able to blow air out directly through the vents. Hope there is enough space to place the fan over the circuit board?

I personally feel the Elektron board is very delicate. Boards of 2 units had gone bad within 2-3 months of purchase. Had them repaired under warranty. Though heating may have been the primary cause. Had 3.5" HDDs then, and no extra cooling.

The safest method is to take power from USB port (but then you will have one less USB port). But not from the tapping the board. And one fan should suffice.

I bought 25mm fans and they quite fit well in the space between the HDD and right plate. I ordered two fans cos one would be too less.... I will post the pics after installing it.
