Default No HBMI surround audio via TV to sound system

I have my Dune HD Base 3.0 media player (firmware 110606_1315) connected to my TV (LG 50PG79ED) via HDMI. Sound is routed from the TV to my SC-PT460 Panasonic home theatre sound system via optical cable. The speakers in the TV are normally switched off.

My problem is that I am unable to get any sound from the Dune into my sound system with this setup.

If I replace the Dune with my video camera, which records in AC3 5.1 sound, I am able to get surround sound, so it is possible to route sound from "HDMI in" of my TV to my sound system.

If I turn the speakers on in my TV, then I get sound from my TV via the Dune HDMI connection.

If I connect the optical cable directly from Dune to my sound system it works, but then I would have to use the poor quality speakers in the TV, because it is impracticable to replug the optical cable all the time.

In the Dune setup I have "Digital audio output mode" set to "Original (bitstream)" and of course "HDMI audio" is enabled.

Has anybody been able to transfer AC3 5.1 sound from a Dune HD to a sound system via the HDMI connection to the TV?

Hi,
I would check the manual of your TV. >90% of TVs are only able to route stereo from HDMI in to HDMI/optical out. Most of them are only able to send surround sound to an AVR if it comes from their internal tuner.

No. As I explained, using HDMI input to the TV, my video camera is able to pass full surround sound through the TV to the sound system.

However, using the same HDMI input, I am unable to pass any sound, stereo or surround, from my Dune to the sound system, although I can pass sound to the TV itself.

I said surround sound, but it is really a red herring because I can't get any sound transferred from the Dune to the sound system via HDMI. The reason why I mentioned it is because I can get stereo sound to my sound system by direct analog stereo cable from the Dune, but I wanted a way to get surround sound.

Are you able to pass any sound from your Dune through your TV to another device?

Hi,
are you sure that your video camera produces DD5.1 and not only DD2.0?

My system is different. Everything is connected to the AVR and the TV gets its image from the AVR.

Yes I am sure. I edited a video clip so that the front speaker pair, the centre and the rear pair were active at different times and copied it back to my camera, so that I could verify that the speakers were responding to different channels.

Thanks for trying to help.

I am 99% sure that LG outputs only DD to its optical out. Maybe you are trying to play files with DTS sound and thats why there is no sound.
I hope that you have set your Dune to output Digital audio.

Well I am able to get audio, including Dolby 5.1, from both my video camera and Blu-ray recorder/player via HDMI input to the the TV and then via optical link to my sound system. (The TV does not have any HDMI out and so no sound out via it.)

My gripe is that if these two devices do what I want, why can't the Dune?

Yes, I have the Dune set to digital audio. I have tried all manner of settings, but nothing works. And yes it is definitely Dolby AC3, not DTS.

Actually, I can get audio to play in my TV if its speakers are turned on, but that is of course not surround sound. It looks like some sort of incompatibility.

I contacted Dune directly but after going around in circles a few times they more or less said "stiff luck". What they actually said was, "Unfortunately, we can not offer you other options to connect. " No offer to treat it as a bug to fix or as a new feature.
