Default Re: Dune Base3.0 dead

Hi Bogdan and the others,
Exactly the same happened to my DUNE BD PRIME 3.0, bought new in September 2010, as described by Bogdan.
I would like to know if you succeeded to change the capacitors and what is the result.
Thank you for sharing this.

Yep - sounds like bad caps. I don't think all of them have died - probably just one or two. I'd suggest looking at the tall green w/ gold srtipe capacitors on the left side of the board (using the picture by the earlier poster), checking to see if one or two are standing up higher than the others. That's because the inner material of the cap has burst through the bottom of its casing, pushing it up. Also look for brown residue on the casings - that would indicate a leak. I had one that stuck out and another one that had residue on the side and I replaced them both.

I would suggest replacing the strange looking caps then turning on your Dune to see if it works before replacing them all. That helps to make sure the problem is a bad cap and not your soldering technique (or both). My iron had to work to get hot enough to melt the solder on the board, so I was concerned about cold solders. Also, make sure you put the new caps in so that the polarity is the same as ones you took out.

It does get hot in the case and the Dune doesn't have a fan, so remember to replace the caps with 105 degree C ones, preferably NOT from China.

It only takes about half an hour or less. Good luck!

Many thanks for the advice. I solved the problem. Found a 1000uF/16V capacitor on the 5Vcc output line, over bumped at its bottom. Exchanged with a new one, same type, also made in China (it seams no other countries are producing consumer grade caps these days (). Tested Dune and all went okay. By precaution I changed later all electrolytic caps with new ones, same characteristics. All is going again fine.
Happy New Year 2013!

That' great! Looks like this is going to be a common problem for the Dunes as they get up in years, and if folks know that there is a cheap fix, they'll try it before spending another $400+ on a new Dune. Although there seem to be a lot of folks here who replace their Dunes whenever a newer model comes out.

I found this parts place after wasting about 2 weeks ordering caps from a store in England:

http://www.mouser.com/

They have just about everything and the prices are great.

Arrow Re: Dune Prime 3.0 dead

Yesterday my Dune BD Prime 3 died on me. The bluray drive kept clicking, the powersupply gave a high pitched sound and video was distorted.

After a look on this forum I changed the capacitors and it works again. The machine gets realy hot so I added a little fan in there. A lot of hot air comes out.. Thanks for the posting!

I will ad some text in Dutch so they can find this forum more easely.

I had my prime 3.0 do the same thing, would crash on reboot and start over. Took out power board and had one large swollen cap, replaced all four and the two medium sized one while I was at it. Powers up perfect now. I think it's better than before because it use to flash and resync several times. Doesn't do that any more video is more stable.

Yah!
