I was wondering if any of you had any experience with the N35 and all kinds of speaker systems (surround, stereo...etc) that you would like to share.

I'm currently considering a few alternatives, but thought I'd like your opinion before buying. I've set aside $200-250 for this.

I assume you are targetting a Speaker / Surround system including an
amplifier? In the higher class you find Marantz but in the affordable range I
would look towards Pioneer sets or Yamaha...

It's quit tight budget to get a complete system though.

If you only look for speakers, I like JBL in general for their price - Quality.

Won't really help you with 200 bucks to spend...
Good systems cost more.

Just head to an audio store and listen to some models.
It would maybe help to post "what alternatives" you are considering...

Just want to comment a little about what I intend to use the N35 for. I haven't bought one yet, but I will be getting it soon for my new house.

At the moment, in my current place, I have a 42" plasma for TV and DVD's, with 2 DVD players connected via a Marantz surround receiver. The Marantz also decodes one of my players, but the other player (a 5-disk Panasonic multiplayer) also does 24/96 and plays DVD-Audio, so it's connected via unbalanced analog (RCA).

The speakers are Yamaha powered monitors, which can be tailored for home use via lots of rear knobs, so highs, mids and lows (with a very critical one that allows for low-pass to minimize room bloat). They sound VERY accurate, and I love them. I might get another pair (smaller ones) for the study.

I am also thinking of the Slim Devices Transporter or Squeezebox but those cost quite a bit more, and the emphasis is on audio, not video.

if you are for audio, go with the squeezebox from slimdevices. I own one and would never give it away for anything. The N35 is good for video, I cannot imagine tp power up my plasma each time I just want to hear some music. only downside of the squeezebox is, that you have to setup some server software and that you need a server or nas running to stream music from.

2 cents 0r pennies worth,
Asda Uk (Walmart) sell a Durabrand home cinama sytem - model Ht-391.
This does a good job de-coding prologic from stereo(only) inputs to 5.1 speakers. I use it for DVB-T sources (in the UK this is the only audio source on terrestial broadcast) The UK cost is around £35.

For actual HiDef HiFi it mainly depends on the inputs to your AV reciever - have a look at this

This reciever allows 2 optical and 2 coax inputs and also has a single 5.1 analogue input(as well as multiple stereo inputs). You do need to add the price of speakers to this reciever.
Drawbacks - it has no digital out (not a prob for me) and unless you already have compatible speakers the price will double (or more)
There is no HDMI interface.
