Default How Do You Compress 1080p to 720p?

I was reading here that the 8gb 720p files look just about the same as the 1080p files in an .mkv container. I did a google search but couldn't find anything on compression. I currently am ripping my blu ray discs to 1080p in an .m2ts container. How do I get them to 720p in an .mkv container? Thanks for any info.

Hold on you horses.

Dropping from 1920*1080 to 1280*720 is a quality loss, sure it still looks probably quite fine. But if you have 1920*1080 (1080p) capabale display, i am quite sure you'll see the difference. Off course the source quality is also important.

You might want to consider to keep the full 1080p resolution., simply lower the bitrate.

There aren't many guides yet to achieve a blu-ray/hd-dvd to mkv convertion but i found one here.

where are these 720p 8GB mkv files coming from, what is the source people are creating them from? are they originally 1080p, or is there 720p version of the movie on hddvd/bluray discs?

The sources are blu-ray, hddvd, and HDTV captures. 720p versions are transcoded with a lower bitrates from the original 1080p sources. When the source is from HDTV, the source is 1080i most of the time.

All the .mkv 720p content I have seen so far has come from 1080p HD-DVD and Blu-ray rip and re-encodes. Interestingly one part of the HD-DVD spec which isn;t in the Blu-ray spec is 720p H264 content stored on standard Red laser DVD media. Its still UDF 2.5 with the HD-DVD structure but pushed down to a DVD size. I guess it would be trivial to stream rip this and repack it to MKV but I haven;t yet seen any of these types of disks (although others have created them on DVD-R's). Its not however standard to have a 720p encode on the disk as well as 1080p... Not much point when the players can just scale to 720p as standard.

On a side note... I guess its technically possible to convert any video content to use MKV as its just a container (Which can store all sorts of codecs).
