Review: Linksys NAS 200 released! (Updated)
Prices just keep going down and nowadays there is a NAS that fits just about any purpose you might think off. With the Linksys NAS200 it becomes even more affordable than ever before. The installation is a breeze, the options are well alligned to the "entry level" needs of consumers and yet, we came up with small emarks that would have a huge effect on the success of the linksys NAS200. In the end, this is a device to watch, especially as a gift it is affordable and functional for the end of year or anyone on a tight budget hungry for a NAS solution. Catch up with our review on the Linksys NAS below!
Quote from Hi-Jack' conclusion:
We often get “cheap” devices mainly imported from the Asian market and very often the word “cheap” was exactly the right thing to call the products. In the case of Linksys NAS200 I don’t feel the word “cheap” is the right one. Actually in this case, the “entry level” comes to justice.
Review: Linksys NAS 200
Enjoy
Hi-Jack

Bad bad Jack... just discovered some notes (the cat walked away with it,
realy true, he loves papers ) which caused 2 important items to not be in
this RC1 release...
01 - Boot time is about 1.5 minutes
02 - It's not fanless and that is totally audible (no settings to slow down).
Actually very nice idea... to blame it on the cat
Enjoy
Hi-Jack

Thanks for the review, sounds quite interesting. I missed one thing in the review which I think is important for a device running 24/7, the powerconsumption in idle and active mode. Are you able to measure that?

It's about 21 watts... (2 hard drives inside) in operational mode.

Is the 4.5 read rate the actual rate at which media files can be streamed? 4.5 MPS may be OK for DVB-T recordings but even an SD DVD ISO can go up to around 10. Perhaps we shouldn't jump to the conclusion that every NAS can stream digital video? Also if it can only manage 4.5 mps why should lack of gigabit lan be an issue?

Hello,
i testet thise product last night.
Pro:
-Easy installation
-Easy setup
Con:
-Very slow
-Noise like a hoovercraft, is louder as a PC
Linksys have very good products, but the nas200 is not glory for the company.
Regards,
FwvG

I'm not talking about streaming there but copying files.
With GBIT lan the copy speeds will be much higher...
(In case of talking about media players, the difference between 10/100
and gbit is not important. In case of a NAS server, it is...
Noise levels are indeed a concern...
It's not a silent device...

Here's another review with pretty much the same conclusion
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/30127/75/
it has some nice graphs comparing it to other populair nas boxes.
It doesn't mention the noise but it states that it's perfromance is lower than NSLU2, which is a bit suprising since the nslu2 box is over 3 years old.

4.5 MBps = 4.5 x 8 = 36 Mbps. In theory at least.

So your mediastreaming concerns are based purely on lack of NFS rather than actual measurement?
