I have a Philips 23PFL5322, with only DVI input....
I use a DVI -> HDMI convertor with no problem...

If you set the popcorn to 720p the TV will upscale to fill the screen.. I have not been able to get 1:1 pixelmapping, since the TV only reports "mode not supported" when I choose 1366x768 on the PCH...

Playing 1080p movies is no problem, as the popcorn will downscale them to the current resolution.. It does not matter if you have 720x576, 720x480, 1280x720 or 1920x1080... everyting will be scaled to fit!

Does this mean that the device will allow 1280 x 768 over HDMI?

HDMI is a Digital TV Link and TV's only expect SD/HD TV resolutions using it. DVI is more general purpose and will support standard PC monitor resolutions. This shouldn't be a problem as DVI and HDMI both support EDID, and the HDMI equiped TV should tell the DVI equipped source what resolutions it supports. This means that HD Ready panels will have to scale 720p even if the DVI source "could" supply the panels native resolution. Only Full HD Panels with 1080 lines can display HD without scaling when the source is 1080i/p.

Probably not, probably means it allows it over VGA.

I was asking because my current media player, an old snazio 1350 supports pc resolutions over dvi. My TV a lg plasma does have to scale plain 720p or 1080i/p (via dvi to HDMI) to allow it to display, but switching to 1280x768 gets me a much sharper picture for whatever reason. Now I know that an machine like a HDMI equipped xbox 360 can also output pc resolutions, so I was hoping the popcornhour could also do this.

Update:
I Just checked hi-jacks review and lo and behold there is screenshot with pc resolutions through hdmi, including 1280x768 and 1366x768 thru the video output wizard.
