Default iStar wont pass DTS audio through HDMI but my Popcorn will..

Hello there,

I own both an iStar Mini and a Popcorn Hour, but am having an extremely annoying problem.

When I am watching x264 encoded with DTS audio, this bloody iStar is just totally silent and outputs NO AUDIO at all, even though the exact same files are working just fine on the Popcorn hour.

The video is fine on the iStar, but its totally muted. What the hell gives?

How do I fix this? If I go into Audio/Video settings, and go to the DTS option, its only allowing me to pick RAW and not PCM like the AC3 options, so what the hell am I supposed to do?

I'm gonna be issuing a chargeback on my credit card if I can't get this to work and send this piece of junk back, because its pissing me off big time.

I am using the HDMI output on the unit, same as the Popcorn.

Any help would be greatly appreciated because I'm rapidly losing patience.

Thanks in advance!

I take it that you do have a TV or Amp that will decode DTS then. If you dont have a TV or AMP that can decode the DTS sound track then you will not hear any sound when playing a DTS film. The unit does not have a licence to Decode DTS, but to be honest I though that this was the same for the Popcorn Hour. You are only able to output the RAW sound data and then have you TV or AMP decode and then play the sound. The units are not able to convert the DTS sound track to a PCM 2 channel format, I am not 100% sure if this is just a licencing issue or a Hardware limitation.

Did you select RAW in the DTS section? If not, you should, then you will hear sound from your DTS amp.

Do people not research stuff before buying things anymore.

The popcorn hour must be connected up differently than your istar, both units treat DTS exactly the same. So its your setup thats a pile of junk.

Dear me, Im going to issue a charge back indeed, good luck with that.

Hi,

We are sorry to hear the problem. The latest firmware080327 will be issued tomorrow. Kindly find it from http://istarhd.com/downloads.html by then, to see if the new firmware would solve the HDMI problem.

Thank you.

Hi guys - know the DTS question has been answered numerous times, but with regards to set up to AMP is it a case of connecting tv to hdmi disabling audio from hdmi and connecting phono's from istar to amp capable of playing DTS.

Have done this and from a non dts file it plays sound through amp, but have tried 2 mkv files with DTS and get nothing both are L4.1 and play's through PC fine. But when try through IStar and amp no sound is heard.

Cheers for any assistance guys... if this is considered hijacking someone elses querstion then I will create a new topic for this Q.
Thanks gary

Can you do some release notes for the firmware updates please. lymzy said last itme he would do some but they never materialised. Without them we dont know what its supposed to fix or not.

Ive got to say you are falling behind the popcorn hour support people when it comes to this.

I mean how can you post "to see if it solves your problem" surely you know if it will fix it or not, his problem is very specific, so why are you being so vague?

Just got my version 1.3 in the mail today and it has this exact same problem. Tried playing an MKV of Bourne Identity with dts audio and it did not work. I have it hooked up via HDMI and do NOT have a DTS receiver, just my HDTV. Since the new firmware has only come out for the 1.1 models, I guess I'll have to wait for a new 1.3 firmware to come out before this problem is fixed?

The Popcorn also only plays DTS Raw - it does not decode. If you do not have a DTS Amplifier, you will need to convert the Audio.

Writing that the popcorn does this is simply not true, have a look in the Popcorn forum, people are haing the same problem and asking about a DTS board to be built into the device.

The person starting this thread seems to be slightly confused, maybe he mixed up the files or something.
