Default Synology firm: No NFS before September

Synology stays behind it's decision to not provide an interface for the NFS on the Synology devices until the update for September 2008. With every notice however, a disclaimer is added that this might be changed at any time as they seem fit due to development planning.

In our latest review on the DS508 we noticed how underdeveloped the new system is against it's high price and that it falls behind compared to similar systems in price and features. Since Synology seems not to be able changing the slow pace of progress around, it will cause the brand to bnecome less recommended at MPC in the near future with ReadyNAS PRO coming up n(includes NFS, SlimServer, TwonkyVision and more stuff we miss on the Synology by default) and the new QNAP systems that catch up with Synology's performance now...

We'll see what it brings in the coming months but is likely for Synology to get thrown off from the NR1 spot now time shows they cannot keep up with the progress others are making.

I for one, am disappointed in how these matters are handled...
(Not only NFS is a remark but also several other functions being too limited...)

Enjoy
Hi-Jack

Sorry but what do you mean by "the new QNAP systems that catch up with Synology's performance now"? Are you referring to the TS409Pro or is there a newer model that you are referring to?

I read your latest review in January of the TS409Pro (Read 27MB/s, Write 18MB/S) vs the new review of the DS508 (Read 52.12MB/s, Write 35.04MB/s). There is almost a double of performance here

My main concerns are capacity (5 disk vs 4) and speed. On both counts the DS508 seem to be a better choice than the QNAP. No NFS until September? I can deal with that.....

I'm looking forward to seeing the ReadyNAS Pro too but if they plan to start at $2000 with 500GB drives (which we have to get rid of anyway since we plan to use 1TB or bigger drives), it would be even more expensive than the DS508

The DS508 is very fast but that is due to having less options partially and the options it has fall short as well. There's to me a big difference in having schedule support or having a good schedule support for instance.

The DS508 nis a new generation and costs 2X as much as the QNAP and al you get is twice the speed and less features and functions. The new models coming up next are single and dual disk models (TS-209 and 109 PRO II)

You can't compare any of these against each other.
The ReadyNAS PRO can also be purchased with 3 1TB drives...
