Default Kiss 558 TV tuner without definition

Hi,

After a long wait yesterday I've got my 558 here in Spain. Well, after a initial test I've found only an important problem that I don't now if it is only a problem of my set or a general problem. I explain it. Live signal from the Kiss Tv tuner looks like as luminance saturated. This is not very notiable with films but when there are studio live programs, white zones of image are without any definition, only as a very brigth zone!. It also happen on zones of the skin of people in the studio that reflect more light from the studio's lights.. it loss all its definition! . I've testing if this fault is also on recorded material, and I found that is only on the Tv tuner signal. As I have not way to compare with another people about the quality of the live tv image from the Kiss tuner.. Could be anyone be so kind giving me an idea about the diference of quality between live Tv watched directily on the TV set from its tuner and from the Kiss tv tuner?. Thanks in advance and sorry for my terrible english.

It seems to be a common problem. More postings from me and other people (unfortunately sometimes in Dutch) on this you will find here:
http://gathering.tweakers.net/forum/...essages/962041

I have informed divxplayer.nl already. They will contact Kiss for a solution.

Default 558 Tv Luma problem

Thanks for your quick reply. Let me ask you more about it, because I don't understand duch, and I'm not able to read every message on that forum.... Is this a 558 design problem that everybody have or only some 558 sets presents that sintoms?. Really the quality of 558 TV recording sometime is so bad, due to this malfuntion, that leave 588 far away of any aceptable standard. Thanks!

By the way.. Could be a good idea, in order to evaluate if this is a common problem or a design problem, that everybody owner of a 558 reading this topic will write here if he has or not that malfuntion. Thanks

Hi there, I'm the originator of the thread on that Dutch site. Since i got my hands on one of the first models i decided to write a review on the forum of a site i read a lot. I'm sorry that half of it is in Dutch but that is its common language and i had no idea so many international people would read it. However, you can just post there in english and you'll get an english answer.
Also i'll keep readin this forum for a while to help out

Now, as for the luminance problem; you are not the only one. I have (had -> brought it back) the same problem. Seems that the gain of the video amplifier at the analog to digital stage is just not lineair, resulting in loss of color resolution in bright (and dark) areas. In plain english; i would not watch that image if i got the player for free.
A few other people on that forum report the same problem, and i'm sure more will follow.

I wrote a post on the forum (in english) explaining where I think that the problem occurs in the player, and how i deducted that. It comes down to this: If you use the player as a pass-through (cable antenna, video in, scart in etc.) then your image will have the luminance problem. If you just play DVD or DivX (over network) your picture should be fine.

There are a bunch more problems than this one, but in my opinion, this is the most serious one. According to the dutch imported (divxplayer.nl) a lot of problems should be corrected soon (next week or so), in the upcoming firmware version 1.0.7.

They are working on it (or will be soon). Hope they can fix it.

Default agonizing

The agonizing question is always "ok, the firmware will correct some bugs.... but what are the incorrigible bugs "...

in other words... I hope the hardware is software depend enough to allow firmware update to correct every bugs...

Default Image extremely brigth problem on Kiss 558 Tv tuner

At the moment I don`t know if this problem of luma saturation on Kiss Tv tuner is a problem of some Kiss 558, or a problem of ALL Kiss 558 sets. I mean, a general design problem. Could be any 558 owner that have same image quality on his Tv set (directlily) and throught the Kiss post a message in this topic telling that his set is working fine in this mather??. Of course comparing images from the same Tv channel at the same moment and, because the faliure is more visible on studio program (well contrasted and well iluminated), the best way is to do a good test is to do the comparation on "live" programs like "News", "Talk shows", etc?. Extremely bright images througth Kiss only will be well notiable on such a kind of programs, because on films is nearly to be normal with same quality. Another question is: Anybody with this faliure has contact Kiss aftersales and already receive a reply?. Really, if Kiss don't solve this big faliure, from my point of view the worst malfuntion, its product will be an unusuable product.... a pity after a long wait!. I'm not sure that a hardware design problem could be solved with a new (software) firmware... Sorry for my bad english.

Hola Luis,

I have a 558 and havent noticed any image problems watching tv either as pass-through or via the 558. I know Hi-Jack also has a 558 and havent heard mention of this.

Hopefully an explanation for your problem can be found soon.

I suggest whoever doubts the DP-558 waits for the final review from MPC as
you know it's based on weeks of hard work reviewing stuff and not just
some quick looks and tests.

We already have a list of items that speak for the player and against the
player so just like every other item, it's a matter of personal taste and
interpretation. (A real pro should not buy DP-558, buy a 2.000 Euro model
to get the real deal)

Whenever the TV-Tuner really is to luminous or has a brightness contrast
problem, it's possible to fix with FW updates by providing menu items to
change these. As for the record, i have been testing since last week friday
(already 7 days) and i noticed the contrast in dark shades should be better
and the TV Tuner quality can be improved, i never got blind during the tests
due to too much light...

All bugs send to Divxplayer are routed to us for confirmation and tested by
Paul also and will be communicated to KiSS by MPC staff. Also, we are
keeping an eye on further development and have daily contact with KiSS
managers about the progress. There is room for improvements on the
DP-558 but such a bad product that return is the only option would only
happen by the pro's... and as I stated, they should buy some 2.000 euro
model

The latter, I like the player and it's functions and am confident the things
we miss today, get priority at KiSS to become available. The changes made
in KiSS teams and their way of working in the future can only benefit the
customers (seperate dev teams). One should however still approach this
recorder as a first generation, second generation starts with EM8620L and
even more, this is another product that will have constant updates.

Sit back, relax, wait for the review, and then decide.
In the mean time lot of more info become available and many changes will
already have been made + KiSS will have had several weeks to prove what
they can do to improve the Dp-558.

As always, it's usually the bad things that are posted on the forums for
discussion so don't base yourself on forum posts only and, if you decide
to buy a DP-558 before our final review, there are showrooms, check the
player before you buy in the showrooms and base your decision on what
you see, instead of what you hear...

That's about the best advice i can offer right now...

Regards
Hi-Jack
