Default Which to Choose!

Well I've been reading all day regarding purchasing a NAS. I have the Linksys unit currently and I can say its more than a bit limited. However I like the concepts it has to offer and would very much like to expand on that basis.

I cant seem to find a definative answer which is the correct unit to purchase.

I have been looking at these models -

Netgear RND2150 ReadyNAS DUO 500GB
Synology DS508
Synology CS407

I really like the idea of being able to host my own web page from home so im kinda drawn to the Synology line.

What in your opinion is the best NAS out there?

Any help or advice you can offer would be greatly appreicated.

Best Regards

Chester

All the NAS servers can serve a web page... Synology and QNAP are the top
of the line for "custom" enhancements and integration of loads of services.
The DS508 is their top of the line product for home users. Instead of the
407, get the 408!!! It's the same as the DS508...

Or you can take it one step further and participate in the buy-in for the
QNAP TS-509...

The ReadyNAS DUO is a great device as well but holds only two drives so
you are micing 2 - 4 - 5 disk servers making it difficult for us to analyze
what your needds are concerning storage volume...

I'd say DS508, DS408 or TS-509 if you need bigger volume and safety (RAID5)...
ReadyNAS DUO if you need small volume (MAX 2TB and no safety or 1TB and safety in MIRROR config)

Well space is kinda important to me. Since I started collecting I had the presence of mind to back up as I go. Hence everything in the NAS will already be backed up on DVD. Yes I have 100's of them tucked away.
even with RAID, I have never really trusted electronic storage media.

So I think its probably boiling down to the 408. My questions at this point would be -

1) If I install 4 1TB disks in the 408, can I enjoy 4 TB's or storage or am I forced to run RAID? If I HAVE to run RAID can I at least pair 2 of the disk as RAID 1 and recovery 2 TB's of total storage with 4 disks?

2) Did Synology repair / plug the security holes in this product?

3)Can I use 5x1 TB drives in the 508 and recover 5 TB's of storage?

Cheers and Thank You very much indeed for the response.

Doesnt appear the QNAP product is available in my area. Thats too bad looks like it might have been a contender.

Gee, now i gotta ask questions about the 508. Im one of those guy with enough knowledge to be dangerous, but atleat I have enough sense to ask questions.

In my home I have 2 completely separate network and 2 completely different internet connects. One for me, and one for the wife. >

I considered creating a bridge between the two, but never really gone further with it. See my wife can fill a 1 TB frighteningly fast!

The 508 has 2 ethernet plugs. Does that mean the 508 can be shared on both networks?

(Net one 192.168.1.1)
(Net two 192.168.2.1)

Cheers
