antivirus and SmartNAvi
I have to say that I am rapidly loosing patience with the NS2300. I really feel it is a poorly developed product, at least on the software side.
My new problem is I have upgraded Kaspersky to 2009 version as my licence had runout. Since upgrading I can no longer see my 2300 in smartnavi. I have placed smartnavi in the exclusion zone and jawar in the trusted zone. But no luck there.
Prior to that I was still experiencing the problem of the device disappearing intermittently from Smartnavi though I solved this by not declaring the device as the default machine.
Anyone recommend a NAS in a similar price range which WILL work?

How is this smartnavi's fault when your AV is doing this? The NAS works but clearly you don't know how your AV defense works to make it not block the smartnavi... Promise devices are for those who'd like to work most with PC's...
Wanna change...? Get a Qnap or Synology... although i'm 100% sure also the Promise is a good affordable NAS for both PC and media players. Just don't feel it's right blame Promise for issues with your AV program.

I have had lots of on-going issues not just re anti virus. This is just another symptom of an on-going battle with this device.
You will see several threads I have started with different problems. I have also PMed promisedude over a long period in an attempt to solve other issues I have not reported on threads. Promisedude has been brilliant but also mystified as to the errors I am experiencing.
I just feel this is yet another example of how the software and vista fail to work together well in certain circumstances. Sorry Hi-jack but despite your comments I have no choice but to question the efficiency of Smartnavi. As the user base is very small I have not been able to get community support either though I see that others have experienced similar problems.
Even when the anti virus is disabled I still get such phenomena. I have even had smartnavi open, seen my NAS only to watch it disappear in from in front of my eyes. Over time we have disabled the virus program, wiondows firewall, fixed the IP address etc. All to no avail. So I do not believe it is just the antivirus.
This is a shame as the product is aimed at people like me.

Hi Kosh, sorry for delay.. I have been in and out recovering (from the sinus infection) and also transitioning to a new position. I will check out the Antivirus Software. I have encountered many cases of AV and IS software installing services that block ports used by SmartNAVI (49152 and 49153). Even after users uninstalled the services remained in the systems causing issues. Naturally disabling the application still does not resolve the problem. The majority of users use SmartNAVI with no issue but ALL softwares is subject to conflicts and issues. Unforunately on the Windows PC side there is No such Thing as 100% compatible. Give me a little to reproduce your issue with the AV under Vista, then I will get back to you.

I have checked those ports and they are not being monitored.

Ok good to know.. Once the investigate is done, I will let you know the outcome.
We have a new version going up tonight.. Give it a shot.. Not expecting anything different but we addressed a couple of Vista display bugs and also added Drag and Drop to SmartSync Backup module of SmartNAVI.
Thanks.

Just discovered that in safe mode with networking Smartnavi works fine and sees the device. So there must be some setting I have which is causing the problem in normal mode.

Yes, definitely a service is blocking. I will have something for you soon as we investigate and determine workaround.
Thanks.

Just to add my 0.02 worth. I loaded SmartNavi on a XP Professional SP3 machine without any antivirus ever loaded on the machine (fresh installation) and holy cow it loads quick! Maybe like 2 seconds or something. I now know that there is something on my main machine with the antivirus/firewall stuff that is making the long load times.
I have never had the issue that Kosh is having but it at least explains the long load times.
Kosh have you gone into the antivirus/firewall settings and said that everything on your home network is allowed to access your machine? You may have to put it in the allow list with wildcards like 192.168.1.*
Laters,
Jeff
