Western digital external harcd drive
I just wanted to share that i used the esata 2 in 1 cable to successfully connect my WD 1 TB essential hard drive with esata connection with istarhd. I also connected the power directly from istart hd. So now i dont need to use my hard drive ac adapter and the drive turns off with the istar. There were 2 problems actually.
first the power pin that comes with esata 2 in 1 cable is not compatible with WD hard drive. actually its smaller and dosent fit into the socket on the drive. I couldnt find the specification of the pin to buy it anywhere and on radioshack a single pin costs like 3 or more bucks. so i just cut off the pin from the ac adapter of my hard drive and cut off the pin from the esata cable and joined the two.
Second the polarity marking on the esata cable dosent work with hard drive. Initially i connected the pin onto esata cable with matching polarity (by looking at the white line on one of the two wires). but when i would connect the power pin to my hard drive the istarhd would just shut off or wouldnt start. so i reversed the connection and now its working perfectly.
It will be a good idea if we can include the esata 2 in 1 cable in the package of istarhd for those who have their own external hard drives they want to use.
