Arrow PCH to introduce new UI soon!

At CES, we have had the privilege amongst others to see what the new Flash based UI on future NMT's is all about. Looking nicely and convenient, the design aspect and handling seemed to be ok for fast scrolling titles using an image wall or even the old list view if prefered by browsing preferences however... we did have some remarks and questions about how it all works which is equally important and we now combine all of that in this news release. Check out the video Syabas released into public as a "teaser"...

This new Flash based solution as interface is visually astonishing and the backend will have the most weight on deciding if this system is usefull besides it's beauty. The systems positive side is that each drive (internal drive, USB, network source etc...) will have it's own database file so if any source is unavailable, the content of these drives will not be shown. This has been so far the major problem for companies to bypass as using single databases will enlist files unavailable and that is simply annoying. The handling overall is fast and we can move up and down, left and right on the image wall... Each line on the wall represents a character or a number so it is alphabetically ordered inside the demo... The system works for music, images and movies / series however, it does require content to be available...

That is a possible downside as everything depends on how it all works... we are already certain the local databses will pull content from an online master database about movies and such and requires initially someone to enter this data into the master databse before you can use it locally (possibly a local option will be provided). With such central approach comes languages and information to be provided in local languages (initially only English supported AFAIK) and different release types (BD, DVD, Divx, AVI, Extended, Uncut, Editor's version etc...). This is not an easy task to do well so I expect few "learning" curves here for both Syabas / PCH and the end users.

In addition, how it all works with series and such... If pressing the album art cover, will it start a movie preview, load the movie or folder content? What if it's a series, open the folder content or start the first file? How do we make this as convenient if possible and a match to peopl's preference? By adding options on how the player acts upon clicks... Is this provided? What for deletion of files, is DB updated automatically? Are files stored inside the movie folders to prevent reloading DB all the time or how does it actually work in the backend...?

The new UI will be released for the newer models C-200 and the A-200 around end of March according to CES info. We can confirm the interface has progressed a lot but several questions and functionalities have not been demonstrated due to unavailability at the time and further development is ongoing. While easily the most appealing interface ever created on the media players so far (no, XBMC is not a media player), it will rise or fall with the backend it uses and the convenience / options provided alongside of the looks to administer and maintain your collection easily. So far, i'm still seeing gaps in international support and possibly the addition of new titles that could demand resources for checking (syabas) or entering these (your end).

The system of having a centralised database is similar to MyMovies features (mymovies.dk) which is kind of developed in a way it is usefull for international use based on a similar approach of having community add titles. Syabas sure invested time and resources in providing this new GUI and we'll see once released, if it lives up to the "next gen expectations" or competes with the systems the community has provided so far... At least the Flash based code provides a lot more visual finesse, now the content creation procedure to use this Flash animated interface needs to proof itself accessible and usable on the side...

Thanks for the interesting news.

Did you get a chance to test the speed of the Syabas Flash photo GUI with "normal size" pictures from a digital camera (say 5-8 Megapixel)? The demo seems to show pictures with a size around 800x600 pixels but the average person has much larger pics in their personal collection, the only time you would normally resize pictures is for e-mailing or web publishing.

Can you confirm whether the small pic resolution is not the only reason for the quick response demonstrated in the video?

Nope we can't as is usually the case with "demo's" the content is tested priory the demo's and not provided by us... It's one of those questions that can only be evaluated when we have the avilability ourselves or maybe Werner / someone else can tell us... I don't think it will be slow with regular sized images but hey... never know

Well cool looking UI is ... cool but shouldn't they concentrate on functionality and stability first?

This is mentioned in their own forum often as well. And the answer is that GUI developement is a totally different team then the one working on bugs/features in the firmware. I like the preview and with what has been shown of the Popbox, I am getting some confidence that we'll be getting a nice box eventually.

Correction
An ugly one (the A200 design is not "nice boxy" in any way) but it will have "nice" features... The internal design won't change the fact externally the A200 looks like "ice age" style... It does not represent the technical finesse of the player itself sadly...

Hmmmm a tiny step forward but I just somehow find Flash a tiny weenie bit so last year especially if the content requires an action to view. Static Pictures is one thing, but the sample window needs to be active unlike Youtube or Iplayer thats static.

The Sky HD box (Thomson/Samsung) has a section called Anytime where you scroll throw pre-recorded sample content, displayed in a small Window as you scroll through the the list. Thats where Syabas needs to be.
