Default Audio tests - 96kHz / 192 kHz

Hi all,

I tried some audio tests with 96kHz / 192 kHz audio file samples.

1) FLAC / Free Lossless Audio Codec / 4 channels / 96,0 KHz / 24 bits / encoded via libFLAC 1.2.0
2) FLAC / Free Lossless Audio Codec / 6 channels / 96,0 KHz / 24 bits / encoded via libFLAC 1.2.0
3) FLAC / Free Lossless Audio Codec / 6 channels / 96,0 KHz / 24 bits / encoded via libFLAC 1.2.1
4) FLAC / Free Lossless Audio Codec / 6 channels / 192,0 KHz / 24 bits / encoded via libFLAC 1.2.1

SONOS
= no
- this multizone audio system don´t play anything with higher sampling rate such as 48kHz

TViX M-6500A
= no
- some samples TViX shows such as playing, but any sound from receiver

XBMC Live
= yes, but only PCM Stereo / 48kHz
- all samples except 192 kHz plays, but receiver detect it only such as PCM / 48kHz / 2.0 ch

HDi Dune Prime
= yes
- all samples 96kHz plays, receiver detect it such as PCM Surround / 96kHz / 3/4.1 ch
- all samples 192kHz plays, receiver detect it such as PCM Surround / 96kHz / 3/4.1 ch
- so, number of channels detected by receiver is not correct and 192kHz audio tracks plays such as 96kHz

Winner is DUNE!

Please, can you divide with your experience with playback of audio tracks with higher sampling rate (more than 48kHz).
Do you know any player, which can really play 192 kHz sound?

Hi rudku,
can I download the samples anywhere?

Not a media player but my Oppo-DVD-Player played DVD-Audio with 2*192Khz and my receiver also showed 192KHz.

Did you test playablility only (quantity) or did you check (sound)quality as well?

Firstly playablility, then of course sound.
It´s amazing, but you must have a capable receiver.

Hi rudku,
I am not sure if the number of channels is incorrect because I tested it with several PC programs and they all showed 5.1.

With the bitrate it seams to be a problem of the Dune my Onkyo 905 also shows only 96KHz either bitstream or PCM. But on the other hand it can have something to do with the number of channels because I think that at least SP/DIF 5.1 is limited to 96KHz. Audacity also shows 5 channels after loading.

I deleted 4 channel and now my receiver also shows 2 channel but still at 96KHz

... every these my tests was via HDMI connection ...
... what I mean "number of channels detected by receiver is not correct" better understand from my table ...

These results are according my real tests.
Maybe on another configuration (= with another AV 7.1 receiver) you can get another results.

Legend:
- 3/2.1 = 5.1
- 3/4.1 = 7.1
these information I read from AV receiver
- red color = wrong number of channels

Seems, that I find a bug, when Dune decoded (= PCM decode) 6 channels surround audio (Dolby Digital 5.1 / DTS-HD High Res 5.1 / LMPC 5.1 / FLAC 5.1) and sends it to AV receiver such as 8 channels surround audio.
With DTS 5.1 and DTS-HD Master 5.1 it´s correct.

Please, check it on your configurations and confirm me, if is true.

Hi,
at least with AC3, DTS and True HD your right. I didn´t check more. 7.1 Multichannel shows my AVR.

2.0 AAC and PCM are shown correctly as 2.0

Hi,

I also test with some WAV LPCM files, here are the results:

WAV LPCM 5.1 96khz 24bits, receiver shows 7.1 96khz

WAV LPCM 2.0 96khz 24bits, receiver shows 2.0 96khz
WAV LPCM 2.0 192khz 24bits, receiver shows 2.0 96khz

I have an Onkyo 606 receiver.

Added a new ticker to Bugs and Wishes on Dune BD Prime 3.0:

- B-MOVA-005 - When Dune decode (= PCM decode) 6 channels surround audio (Dolby Digital 5.1 / DTS-HD High Res 5.1 / LMPC 5.1 / FLAC 5.1) sends it to AV receiver such as 8 channels PCM surround audio. With DTS 5.1 and DTS-HD Master 5.1 it´s correct.
