Default A strange thing...maybe of use to some

I have previously reported problems getting my 15xx F/W 2.8.8 to play R1 DVDs and have tried all known options to get it to do so. Whenever I have tried, menus etc work, but when I try to play the main movie, the KiSS freezes and I have to unplug and reboot.

I decided to replace the DVD drive with an old spare Pioneer 16X I had, so I opened the box (warranty already void because I have already opened it) and hooked the Pioneer to the MB. Since it was a test only, I left the original Toshiba in the machine and simply placed the Pioneer on top of it.

With the Pioneer in place, I was able to play ALL the R1s that I hadn't been able to play since upgrading the F/W.

Before physically removing the Toshiba and permanently replacing it, I decided to give it one last try, so I hooked it up again to the MB.

To my great surprise and delight, the KiSS now plays ALL the discs it wasn't able to play only a few minutes earlier!

Could it be that briefly introducing a different DVD drive has 'woken the F/W up' (a bit like the way you are supposed to initiate a Region 0 change?

All I can say is that the KiSS is now reassembled with the original component and working better than it did before

This may be of benefit to some that have encountered this problem, but I am curious as to how briefly switching to a different R0 drive could fix my problem

Very strange indid.

But my assumption is that there was a bad contact, between the toshiba and the MB, and by opening and reconecting the data connector you corrected the problem.

As you surely know the region protection is within the DVD drives only.

I did think of the possibility of 'dirty contacts', but since other DVDs played perfectly well, surely this would imply that R1 discs required different connectors on the IDE strap, and if this were the case, surely the DVD-Rom output could not cause the KiSS to 'lock-up'

I remain stumped but am not going to complain with the result
