Default Network problems. Dune Base 3.0 and Windows 7

I am having trouble getting my NEW Windows 7 computer to share files to my Dune Base 3.

However, my Windows XP laptop can see the shared files from the Windows 7 desktop

I have disabled Windows Fire. I have shared the folder, and yet, the Dune refuses to see it.

Any help?

Took me hours to get the new & improved (meaning horrible) windows file sharing working, without using the (useless to me) homegroup network sharing.

I did a bunch of searches and finally found a website that talks about the settings...

Confusing as all hell... To get it to basically function just like previous versions of windows file sharing.

In my particular case, setting DHCP instead of fixed IP address on the Dune allowed me to view files stored on the Dune from Win (SMB group name can't be configured manually on the Dune, might the problem).

Basically, you need to share the folder or drive, as you did with Windows XP, however, there are a number of additional things you need to do. There are a number of advanced settings, mainly centred around permissions. Set your permissions for yourself, Administrator and limited sharing permissions for 'Everyone'. Ensure that those names that aren't there are manually added. Then on the Dune, go to Network Folder and click on it using the 'Pop-up' menu button on your Dune remote. Input the settings as per your server (SMB, NFS), putting the IP address of the computer your shared folder/drive is on as the name of the server. Type in any required user name/password, save and you should be able to connect with your new share.
It's a bloody headache compared to XP!

I don't know why so many people seem to have trouble sharing with Win7. perhaps used to using 'simple' sharing mode in XP?

SMB needs permissions to 'everyone' on the shared folder. All you need to do is share the foler, give everyone read minimum access to the share. Edit the NTFS / folder permission, add EVERYONE with minimum of read. Done

SMB settings are different in Vista/7, it's well documented on the net and some devices (read not windows xp, vista or 7) simply cannot talk that well with them without changing policy settings /encryption level etc. The simple instructions above may share with other windows computers fine but other devices can and do have underlying smb issues when trying to read a share.

There's a page I found on here somewhere that tells you how to set up windows 7 for sharing, and once I'd done that I was able to browse and play files. It was for a different device but it should still should work.

Found it,

Yeah Geezer...that doesn't work. That was the first thing i tried.

I then tried these instructions:
http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=63116

That didnt' help either. I See my computer but when i open it there are no shared folders...nothing.

My WHS server shows up without issue, but my Win7 shows nothing.

Ok...it seemed to be windows live something or other. I followed the last link and it didn't work. I then uninstalled everything to do with windows live and now they show up.

On a side note, I have an XP laptop and everything shared as expected in 5 seconds.

I to can confirm that the latest verson of Messenger Live Beta was the cause of my issues. Orignaly noticed the issue on my Astone 110d a few weeks back but put it down to issues with Windows 7. Rebuild today roduced the same issue until i realised that i had already installed WLM Beta. Removed it andthe problem was gone. Not sure what it is about WLM Beta but it causes issues with network browsing from NMT's back to the Windows 7 machine.
