Yes, but as always, beware of overheating.

Is a 3TB external hd working with Dune when connected via USB to a NAS like Buffalo link station?

Yes, as long as the NAS supports it.

Linkstation doesnt supports it. Found this on Buffalos FAQs:
Note:
If the capacity of the hard drive is more tan 2.2TB, the hard drive may not be recognized on LinkStation or the capacity is not correct.

Re: Dune and 2.5 Tb & 3 Tb HDD
Does anybody know if a internal 4 TB harddisk like the "Hitachi IDK Deskstar H3IK40003254SE 4TB" will work in the Dune Smart D1 with the latest firmware?

Re: Dune and 2.5 Tb & 3 Tb HDD
Simple answer: Yes
Longer answer: When Dune added support for GPT partitioned HDD's all they stated was that they had added support for HDD's >2.2Tb
So I can't see any reason why it would make a difference if the HDD was 3Tb or 4Tb as long as it is a Green HDD that doesn't get too hot - and I have heard of others using the 4Tb Deskstar without issue.
Mark.

Re: Dune and 2.5 Tb & 3 Tb HDD
AFAIK the issues with a USB GPT HDD is still not fixed and wont be until we get a firmware update. IIRC Dune have stated that this issue is found and so the fix should be part of the next firmware - but when that will be is anybodies guess.

This sounds very interesting - as a fairly new convert to DuneHD I have been very impressed with the setup and have been busy ripping blu-ray's etc., to the 2Tb internal HDD. This is nearly full though so it is either look for network storage or to consider a larger 4Tb. I have looked everywhere for others using this HDD - have you links to anywhere please?
Thanks, Mike
