Can an HDI Dune D1 take a regular external USB blu-ray or DVD player plugged into the back and play back commercial disks? (as opposed to using the blueray extension drive?)

External USB Bluray / DVD optical drive can play ONLY ripped disks (without protection). It cannot play the orriginal disks.

You have to use the BE extension. I use the extention and have no problems.

Are you sure about smart d1 not playing original blurays from external usb optical drive except the BE extension? Because I have a samsung se506-ab attached and it only plays cd, dvd, not original blurays. I don't have any backups blurays to try. I want to know for sure because for the last two days I searched for solutions and nothing. I get the message : playback cancelled due to security violation. Thanks in advance.

An external BD/DVD-ROM will work with most DVD discs for playback with no problems but usually will NOT work with commercial blu ray discs.

This is because most external optical drives first connect through a USB bridge to convert and allow it to have a USB connection instead of the usual SATA/IDE. This USB bridge may not pass the required HDCP data to the player when it requests for it (the drive does not respond to the HDCP handshake required to start decrypting the disc data) and thus will stop playback.

The Dune BE extension connects through eSATA which is similar to the onboard connection and allows the player to directly query the drive for HDCP data and thus allows playback. DVDs work because there is no handshake required, just the CSS data which is transferred as normal data when the disc is read.
